Sermo de Transfiguratione, ante medium
Aperit Dóminus coram eléctis téstibus glóriam suam, et commúnem illam cum céteris córporis formam tanto splendóre claríficat, ut et fácies ejus solis fulgóri símilis, et vestítus candóri nívium esset æquális. In qua transfiguratióne illud quidem principáliter agebátur, ut de córdibus discipulórum crucis scándalum tollerétur; nec conturbáret eórum fidem voluntáriæ humílitas passiónis, quibus reveláta esset abscónditæ excelléntia dignitátis. Sed non minóre providéntia spes sanctæ Ecclésiæ fundabátur, ut totum Christi corpus agnósceret quali esset commutatióne donándum, ut ejus sibi honóris consórtium membra promítterent, qui in cápite præfulsísset.

Sermone di san Leone Papa
Sermone sulla Trasfigurazione, prima della metà
Il Signore manifesta la sua gloria davanti ai testimoni che ha scelto, e quella forma corporale che gli è comune col resto degli uomini la fa risplendere di tale fulgore, che la sua faccia è scintillante come il sole, e le sue vesti bianche come la neve. Con questa trasfigurazione egli certo si proponeva soprattutto di togliere dal cuore dei discepoli lo scandalo della croce; e far sì che l'ignominia volontaria della sua passione non sconcertasse coloro davanti ai quali avrebbe svelato l'eccellenza della sua nascosta dignità. Ma con non minore provvidenza egli fondava la speranza della santa Chiesa, con che conoscendo l'intero corpo di Cristo quale trasformazione gli era riservata, ciascun dei membri potesse ripromettersi di partecipare alla gloria onde aveva visto risplendere il capo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. S'inebriarono dell'ubertà della tua casa:
* E li dissetasti al torrente delle tue delizie.

Ma volendo confermare gli Apostoli ed elevarli ad una scienza perfetta, egli racchiuse un altro ammaestramento in questo miracolo. Mosé infatti ed Elia, la legge cioè e i profeti, apparvero in conversazione col Signore; così che nella presenza di queste cinque persone si compiva esattamente ciò che sta scritto: «Sul deposto di due o tre testimoni si stabilisce ogni cosa» Deut. 19,15. Che di più stabile, che di più certo di questa cosa, cui la tromba del vecchio e del nuovo Testamento annunziano concordemente, intorno alla quale gli istrumenti delle antiche testimonianze concordano colla dottrina evangelica? Infatti le pagine delle due alleanze s'accordano insieme perfettamente; e colui che le figure aveano preannunziato sotto il velo dei loro misteri, ora si mostra scoperto nello splendore della sua gloria.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Maestro, è bello per noi lo stare qui:

Pertanto l'Apostolo Pietro animato da queste rivelazioni di cose misteriose, sprezzante del mondo e infastidito della terra, si lascia trasportare fuori di sé fino all'estasi dei desideri eterni; e nel colmo della gioia per tutto quello che vede, domanda di rimaner con Gesù là dove lo diletta la manifestazione della sua gloria. E perciò esclama: «Signore, è bene per noi lo stare qui; se vuoi, facciamo tre tende, una per te, una per Mosé e una per Elia» Matth. 17,4. Ma a questa proposta il Signore non rispose, mostrando così che il suo desiderio, sebbene non fosse cattivo, però non era ordinato; perché il mondo non poteva essere salvato se non colla morte di Cristo, e perché la fede dei credenti dall'esempio del Signore apprendesse, che, nelle tentazioni di questa vita, se non si deve mai dubitare delle promesse della beatitudine, tuttavia occorre domandare piuttosto la pazienza che la gloria.

℟. Se il ministero della morte, inciso con lettere su pietre, fu circondato di tanta gloria che i figli d'Israele non potevano fissare lo sguardo in faccia a Mosé per il fulgore, che pure era fuggevole, del volto di lui;

℣. Cristo infatti è stato riputato degno di tanta maggior gloria, rispetto a Mosé, quanto più grande è l'onore dell'artefice riguardo alla casa che ha fabbricato.

Il Signore aveva sovente, parlato ai discepoli di pericoli, sovente della sua passione, sovente della loro stessa morte, e aveva ingiunto molte cose dure e ardue; e tutto questo per la vita presente, e per un tempo più prossimo, mentre i beni erano nella speranza e nell'aspettativa; come ad esempio, che salverebbero l'anima propria perdendo la vita; ch'egli sarebbe venuto nella gloria del Padre suo a rendere il premio; e per renderli ancora più certi di ciò colla stessa vista, e per mostrare cos'è questa gloria colla quale sarebbe venuto, la scopre loro, e la fa vedere per quanto potevano contemplarla in questa vita presente, affinché oggi, massimamente Pietro, non si rattristassero né della propria, né della morte del Signore.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

E guarda come procede nel parlare del regno della geenna. Dicendo: «Chi ama la vita sua, la perde; e chi la perderà per me, la salverà» Joann 12,25; e dicendo: «Renderà a ciascuno secondo le opere sue» Matth. 16,27, egli designò e il regno e la geenna. Quindi dopo aver parlato dell'uno e dell'altra, fa sì vedere cogli occhi il regno, ma non già la geenna; perché ciò sarebbe stato necessario solo con uomini più rozzi e più ignoranti; ma essendo essi virtuosi e sensati, bastò confermarli colla vista del meglio. E ciò era anche molto più conveniente per lui stesso. Tuttavia non scartò del tutto l'altro mezzo; e talvolta mette quasi sotto gli occhi l'orribile quadro della geenna, come quando ritrae la storia di Lazzaro, e la parabola del creditore che reclama cento denari.

Sisto II, Ateniese, da filosofo fattosi discepolo di Cristo, accusato nella persecuzione di Valeriano di predicare pubblicamente Cristo, è arrestato e trascinato nel tempio di Marte, dove lo si minaccia della pena del capo se non sacrifica a quest'idolo. Ma ricusatosi con somma costanza a questa empietà, mentre è condotto al martirio fattoglisi incontro san Lorenzo e dicendogli con dolore: Padre, dove vai senza il tuo figlio? santo Pontefice, dove t'affretti senza il tuo ministro? risponde: Io non ti abbandono, o figlio, ti sono riserbati maggiori cimenti per la fede di Cristo: fra tre giorni mi seguirai, il levita seguirà il sacerdote: frattanto, se hai qualche cosa nei tesori, dallo ai poveri. Egli dunque fu ucciso lo stesso giorno insieme coi diaconi Felicissimo e Agapito, e coi suddiaconi Gennaro, Magno, Vincenzo e Stefano; e fu sepolto nel cimitero di Callisto il 6 di Agosto, gli altri invece nel cimitero di Pretestato. On the Transfiguration
The Lord taketh chosen witnesses, and in their presence, revealeth His glory. That form of body which He had in common with other men, He so transfigured with light, that His Face did shine as the sun, and His raiment became exceeding white as snow. Of this metamorphosis the chief work was to remove from the hearts of the disciples the stumbling at the Cross. Before their eyes was unveiled the splendour of His hidden majesty, that the lowliness of His freely-chosen suffering might not confound their faith. But none the less was there here laid by the Providence of God a solid foundation for the hope of the Holy Church, whereby the whole body of Christ should know with what a change it is yet to be honoured. The members of that body whose Head hath already been transfigured in light may promise themselves a share in His glory.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. They were abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house, and

The unveiling of such mysteries roused the mind of the Apostle Peter to an outburst of longing for the things eternal, which despised and disdained the things worldly and earthly overflowing with gladness at the vision, he yearned to dwell with Jesus there, where the revelation of His glory had rejoiced him. And so he said Master, it is good for us to be here if Thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. To this proposal the Lord answered nothing, this signifying, that what Peter wished was not wrong, but out of place, since the world could not be saved but by the death of Christ. And the Lord's example was to call the faith of believers to this, that albeit we are behoven to have no doubts concerning the promise of eternal blessedness, yet we are to understand that, amid the trials of this life, we are to seek for endurance before glory.

Since the Lord had spoken much concerning dangers, much concerning His Own sufferings, much concerning death, and the killing of His disciples, and had laid upon them many hard and grievous things, and since all these were in this present life, and already hanging over them, whereas the good things were matter for hope and waiting as, for example, that whosoever should lose his life for His sake should find it, for that the Son of Man should come in the glory of His Father, and reward every man according to his works. Matth. xvi. 25, 27. Therefore, to assure them by their own eyes, and show them what the glory is wherein He will come, He manifested and unveiled it to them, as far as in this life they were able to grasp it, lest they and especially Peter should grieve over their own deaths, or the death of their Lord.

Commemoration of: S. Xystus II Pope, Felicissimus and Agapitus, Martyrs
Xystus II. was an Athenian, who, from a philosopher, became a disciple of Christ. In the persecution under Valerian he was accused of openly preaching Christ, and was seized and haled to the temple of Mars, where he was given the choice of death or offering sacrifice to the idol. He firmly refused to commit that wickedness, and as he was being led away to seal his testimony, holy Lawrence ran up to him and in his grief said to him Father, whither goest thou without thy son Holy Priest, dost thou fare hence without a Deacon? Xystus answered him: I am not leaving thee, my son there awaiteth thee for Christ's truth a sterner wrestling than mine yet three days, and thou shalt follow me, the Deacon behind the Priest and in the meanwhile, if thou hast anything in the treasury, give it to the poor. Xystus was accordingly slain upon that day, and with him the Deacons Felicissimus and Agapitus, and the Subdeacons Januarius, Magnus, Vincent, and Stephen. He was buried in the cemetery of Callistus, and they in the cemetery of Praetextatus upon the 6th day of August, in the year of our Lord 258. He sat (in the throne of Peter) eleven months and twelve days. During that time he held one ordination in the month of December, wherein he made four Priests, seven Deacons, and two Bishops.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 7 Agosto, Luna 23

A Nàpoli, in Campània, san Gaetàno Thiéne Confessore, Fondatore dei Chierici Regolari, il quale, per la sua singolare confidenza in Dio, diede a seguire ai suoi l'anticai forma di vita Apostolica; e, illustre per miracoli, dal Papa Clemènte decimo fu annoverato fra i Santi.
Ad Arézzo, in Toscana, il natale di san Donàto, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, fra le altre opere miracolose (come scrive il beato Gregorio Papa), coll'orazione restaurò un sacro calice, spezzato dai pagani. Egli, nella persecuzione di Giuliàno l'Apòstata, fu preso da Quadraziàno Augustàle, e, avendo rifiutato di sacrificare agli idoli, fu percosso con la spada, e così compì il martirio. Insieme con lui patì anche il beato Hanno Monaco, la cui memoria si celebra il sedici Luglio, giorno nel quale il suo sacro corpo fu trasferito ad Ostia.

A Milàno san Fàusto soldato, il quale, sotto Aurélio Cómmodo, dopo molti combattimenti, conseguì la palma del martirio.

August 7th 2026, the 23rd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Naples, in Campania, [in the year 1547,] the holy Confessor Gaetan of Tiene, Founder of the Clerks Regular, who with wonderful confidence in God enjoined upon them the first way of living of the Apostles. He was famous for miracles, and Clement X. enrolled his name among those of the Saints.
At Arezzo, in Tuscany, [in the year 362,] the holy martyr Donatus, Bishop [of that see.], who among other miraculous deeds, by his prayers (as is related by blessed Pope Gregory) made whole again a sacred chalice which had been broken by pagans. He was arrested by the imperial officer Quadratian in the persecution under the Emperor Julian the Apostate, and for as much as he refused to sacrifice to idols he was beheaded, and so finished his testimony. There suffered also along with him the blessed monk Hilarinus, whose feast is kept upon the 16th day of July, being the day whereon his body was brought to Ostia.
At Rome, [in the third century,] the holy martyrs Peter and Julian, and eighteen others.
At Milan, [in the second century,] the holy soldier Faustus, who under the Emperor Aurelius Commodus, after many contendings, gained the crown of martyrdom.
