Gaetano, nato a Vicenza, dalla nobile famiglia di Tiene, appena nato, la madre l'offri alla Vergine Madre di Dio. Fin dai più teneri anni addimostrò tale mirabile innocenza, che tutti lo chiamavano il Santo. Laureatosi a Padova nell'uno e nell'altro diritto, si recò a Roma; dove Giulio II l'ammise fra i prelati, e ordinato sacerdote, arse di tal fuoco di amor di Dio, che, abbandonata la corte, si votò interamente a Dio. Fondati degli ospedali a sue spese, vi serviva colle sue proprie mani perfino gli appestati. Lo zelo infaticabile che spiegava per la salute del prossimo lo fecero soprannominare il Cacciatore delle anime.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Lettura 5
Desideroso di ricondurre la disciplina ecclesiastica decaduta alla forma della vita apostolica, egli istituì l'ordine dei Chierici regolari, i quali, rinunziando a ogni preoccupazione di cose terrene, non avessero né rendite, né domandassero ai fedeli di che sostentarsi, ma vivessero di sole elemosine offerte spontaneamente. Pertanto, ottenuta l'approvazione di Clemente VII, fece la professione solenne all'altare maggiore della basilica Vaticana insieme con Giovanni Pietro Caraffa, vescovo di Chieti, che fu poi il sommo Pontefice Paolo IV, ed altri due personaggi di eminente pietà. Nel sacco di Roma fu mal trattato barbaramente dai soldati avidi di denaro, ch'egli aveva già deposto per le mani dei poveri nei tesori del cielo, sopportò battiture, torture e prigione con invitta pazienza. Egli perseverò con somma costanza nel tenore di vita che aveva abbracciato, non appoggiandosi che alla divina provvidenza, la quale non gli mancò mai come ebbero a provarlo talvolta dei miracoli.

Lettura 6
Promosse sommamente l'amore al culto divino, il decoro della casa di Dio, l'osservanza dei sacri riti e l'uso frequente della santissima Eucaristia. Più di una volta scoprì e distrusse le insidie e gli errori dell'eresia. Prolungava la sua orazione per otto ore di seguito tra continue lacrime; spesso era rapito in estasi e fu celebre per il dono di profezia. Essendo a Roma la notte di Natale presso la culla del Signore, meritò di ricevere fra le sue braccia il Bambino Gesù dalla Madre di Dio. Talvolta passava le notti intere a castigare il suo corpo con discipline; né si poté indurlo mai ad addolcire l'austerità della sua vita; ripetendo di voler morire nella cenere e nel cilizio. Infine, caduto malato per il dolore di vedere Dio offeso in una sedizione popolare, confortato da visione celeste, se ne andò in cielo a Napoli; dove si conserva il suo corpo assi religiosamente nella chiesa di san Paolo. Celebre per numerosi miracoli in vita e dopo morte, il sommo Pontefice Clemente X lo iscrisse nel numero dei Santi.

Omelia di sant'Agostino Vescovo
Libro 2 sul Discorso del Signore sul monte, cap. 14
«Nessuno può servire a due padroni». A questa stessa intenzione si riferisce ciò ch'egli espone di conseguenza, dicendo: «Perché o odierà l'uno e amerà l'altro; o si affezionerà all'uno e disprezzerà l'altro». Bisogna considerare attentamente queste parole; perché egli stesso indica poi quali siano questi due padroni, aggiungendo: «Non potete servire a Dio e a mammona». Dicono che gli Ebrei chiamano le ricchezze mammona. Anche nella lingua Cartaginese questa parola ha lo stesso senso; perché mammona in Cartaginese significa guadagno. Ma servire a mammona è essere schiavo di colui che la sua perversità ha preposto alle cose terrene, e che il Signore chiama «principe di questo mondo» Joan 12,31. Dunque, «o s'affezionerà all'uno e amerà l'altro» cioè Dio; «o s'affezionerà all'uno e disprezzerà l'altro». Difatti chi è schiavo di mammona, s'affeziona a un padrone duro e pernicioso; perché schiavo della sua cupidigia, subisce la tirannia del diavolo, e certo non lo ama punto. Perché chi può amare il diavolo? ma tuttavia lo sopporta.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

Perciò , soggiunge, io vi dico di non angustiarvi per la vostra vita, di quel che mangerete, né per il vostro corpo, di che vi vestirete» Matth. 6,25; perché pur non cercando il superfluo, il cuore non si divida per lo stesso necessario, e che, per procurarselo, la nostra intenzione non sia fuorviata fin dalle azioni che ci paiono fatte per motivo di misericordia; cioè, che mentre sembriamo dediti agli interessi del prossimo, non badiamo piuttosto al nostro vantaggio che alla sua utilità; e perciò non ci sembri di peccare non volendo noi ottenere il superfluo, ma il necessario.

Commemorazione: S. Donato, Vescovo e Martire
Donato, dopo che gli furono uccisi i genitori per la fede di Cristo, fuggì col monaco Ilarino e si ritirò ad Arezzo in Toscana, divenendo poi vescovo di questa città. Nella persecuzione di Giuliano avendo il prefetto Quadraziano ordinato a tutti due di venerare gli idoli, essi si rifiutarono di commettere delitto sì detestabile, onde Ilarino alla presenza di Quadraziano fu battuto finché non spirò; Donato anch'egli straziato crudelmente fu ucciso di spada. I loro corpi furono sepolti con onore dai Cristiani presso quella città.

Cajetan was born at Vicenza, in the year 1480, of the noble family of the lords of Tiene, and was forthwith dedicated by his mother to the Virgin Mother of God. From his childhood such wonderful innocence shone in him that all called him the Saint. He took the degree of Doctor in Civil and Canon Law at Padua, and afterwards went to Rome, where Julius II. gave him a place among the Prelates. Having taken Priest's Orders, he became so full of the fire of the love of God, that he left the Court, that he might be free to work entirely for God. He founded hospitals at his own expense, and nursed the sick, even such as were suffering from the plague, with his own hands. He laboured with such constant earnestness for the salvation of his neighbours that he got the name of the Hunter of souls.

From a desire to restore the corrupted discipline of the clergy to the mould of the Apostolic life, he founded, in 1524, a Congregation of Clerks Regular, who should give up all care of earthly things, neither keeping any income, nor begging the needful things of life from the faithful, but living only on such alms as might be given them unasked. For this end, and with the approval of Clement VII., Cajetan himself, together with John Peter Carafa, Archbishop of Chieti, (afterwards Pope Paul IV.), and two other men of eminent godliness, took solemn vows at the High Altar of St. Peter's Church on the Vatican. When the city of Rome was sacked by the troops of the Constable de Bourbon, in 1527, Cajetan was most cruelly illused to make him reveal his wealth, which had long before been laid up for him in heaven by the hands of the poor, and he endured with unconquered patience stripes, torture, and imprisonment. He held on bravely in the way of life he had taken up, trusting altogether to the Providence of God, Whose unfailing care of him was sometimes attested by miracles.

He was a great advancer of care in the worship of God, of splendour in the house of God, of exactness in the holy ceremonies, and of the often receiving of the most holy Eucharist. The hideous forms and dark convolutions of heresy he more than once unmasked and abolished. He would remain in prayer with abundance of tears as much as eight hours at a time. He was often thrown into trances, and was celebrated for the gift of prophecy. One Christmas night at Rome, when he was praying before the Lord's manger, he was deemed worthy that the Mother of God should lay the Child Jesus in his arms. He sometimes spent the whole night in whipping himself, nor could he ever be persuaded to soften the hardness of his life, but witnessed that he was fain to die in sackcloth and ashes. In the end he fell ill with grief at the offence against God, which the people of Naples committed by rebelling (against the establishment of the Inquisition.) Refreshed by a vision from heaven, he departed thither on the 7th day of August, 1547. His body lieth at Naples in the Church of St. Paul, where it is held in great reverence. Pope Clement X., finding him to have been illustrious for miracles, both during his life and after his death, enrolled his name among those of the Saints.

Bk. ii. on the Lord's Sermon on the Mount, ch. xiv
No man can serve two masters, and this is further explained for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. These words we ought carefully to weigh, for the Lord showeth straightway who be the two masters whom we have choice of: Ye cannot serve God and Mammon. Mammon is a term which the Hebrews are said to use for riches. It is also a Carthaginian word for the Punic for gain is mammon. He which serveth mammon, serveth that evil one who hath perversely chosen to be lord of these earthly things, and is called by the Lord the prince of this world. John xiv. 30. Of these two masters, either a man will hate the one and love the other, that is God or he will hold to the one and despise the other. He which serveth mammon holdeth to an hard and destroying master, for he is led captive by his lust, and sold a slave to the devil, and him loveth no man is there any man that loveth the devil And yet there be that hold to him.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
* May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them.

I santi Martiri Ciriaco Diacono, Largo e Smaràgdo, i quali, insieme con altri venti Compagni, subirono il martirio il sedici Marzo. I loro corpi, sepolti dal Prete Giovànni sulla via Salària, da san Marcéllo Papa furono in questo giorno trasportati in un podere di Lucina, sulla via Ostiènse, e poi, portati a Roma, furono riposti nella Diaconia di santa Maria in via Lata.
Ad Anazàrbo, nella Cilicia, san Marino il vecchio, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Diocleziàno e il Preside Lisia, battuto con flagelli, sospeso su un legno e dilaniato, finalmente gettato alle fiere finì la vita.

August 8th 2026, the 24th day of the Moon, are commemorated at Rome the holy martyrs Cyriacus the Deacon, Largus, Smaragdus, and twenty others, who suffered upon the 16th day of March in the persecution under Diocletian and Maximian, and whose bodies, which had been buried by John the Priest beside the Salarian Way, were upon this day moved by the holy Pope Marcellus to Lucina's farm upon the Ostian Way, whence they have since been brought into the city and buried in the deaconry of Sancta Maria in Via Lata.
Upon the 8th day of August, were born into the better life:
