Ciriaco, diacono, rinchiuso lungamente in carcere con Sisinio. Largo e Smaragdo, fece molti miracoli, fra gli altri liberò colle sue preghiere dal demonio Artemia, figlia di Diocleziano; e inviato a Sapore, re dei Persiani, liberò ugualmente Jobia, sua figlia, dallo spirito maligno. E dopo aver battezzato il re suo padre con altri 430, ritornò a Roma; dove l'imperatore Massimiano lo fece imprigionare e strascinare, carico di catene, davanti al suo carro; e dopo quattro giorni tratto di prigione, gli fu colata addosso pece bollente, poi steso sopra un letto di ferro e infine insieme con Largo, Smaragdo e altri 24 fu colpito colla scure sulla via Salaria, nei giardini di Sallustio. I loro corpi, seppelliti sulla stessa via dal prete Giovanni il 26 Marzo, in seguito l'8 di Agosto, per cura di Papa Marcello e della nobilissima Lucina involti in stoffe di lino e imbalsamati con profumi preziosi, furono trasferiti nella proprietà della stessa Lucina sulla via Ostiense a sette miglia da Roma.

Cyriacus the Deacon was long kept in prison with Sisinius, Largus, and Smaragdus, and wrought many wonderful works. Among other things he by his prayers freed from a devil Arthemia, a daughter of Diocletian, and, being sent to Sapor, King of the Persians, also delivered his daughter Jobia from a foul spirit. He baptized the king, her father, and four hundred and thirty others, and afterwards returned to Rome. He was arrested by command of the Emperor Maximian, and dragged in chains before his chariot. Then after four days he was brought forth from prison, had boiling pitch poured upon him, was stretched on a block, ~(and belaboured with a cudgel,) and at last was slain with the axe, along with Largus, Smaragdus, and twenty others, at the gardens of Sallust, on the Salarian Way. On this Way were their bodies buried by John the Priest, on the 16th day of March, in the year of our Lord 303, but afterwards, on the 8th of August, Pope Marcellus and the noble lady Lucina took them and wrapped them in linen, and embalmed them with costly ointments, and carried them to the farm belonging to the said lady Lucina, at the seventh milestone from Rome on the road to Ostia.

By the words “every creature” we may understand every tribe of the Gentiles. Of aforetime it had been said, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, Matth. x. 5, but now, Preach the Gospel to every creature, that, since the Jews had proudly rejected the preaching of the Apostles, that might become our gain which was the seal of their condemnation. But when the Eternal Truth sendeth forth His disciples to preach, what doth He but scatter seed over the field of the world He scattered abroad a few grains for seed, that He may afterward reap an abundant harvest in our faith.

Our Lord and Redeemer came into the world a new Man, and gave the world new commandments. For against the ways of our old life, brought and bred up in sin, He set the contrast of His new life. It was the old way, according to the knowledge of the carnal man, for every man to keep his own goods, and, if he were able to do it, to take his neighbour's goods also, and, if he were not able to take them, at least to lust after them. But the Heavenly Physician hath medicines wherewith to meet all the diseases of sin. For, even, as by the art of the physician, things hot are healed by things cold, and things cold by things hot, so doth our Lord set against sin holiness, ordaining for the lecherous purity, for the miserly munificence, for the hot-tempered meekness, and for the proud lowliness.

Martirologio {anticipated}

Vigilia di san Lorénzo Martire.
San Giovanni Battista Maria Vianney, Prete e Confessore, celeste Patrono di tutti i parroci, il cui giorno natalizio è ricordato il quattro di questo mese.
A Roma san Romàno, soldato e Martire, il quale, convertitosi per la confessione del beato Lorénzo, lo pregò di battezzarlo, e, subito presentato al Giudice e percosso con bastoni, alla fine fu decapitato.
In Toscana il natale dei santi Martiri Secondiano, Marcelliàno e Veriàno; i quali, al tempo di Décio, dal Consolare Promóto prima furono battuti, quindi sospesi sull'eculeo, graffiati con uncini, e bruciati col fuoco nei fianchi, e finalmente decapitati meritarono la palma trionfale del martirio.
A Verona i santi Martiri Fermo e Rùstico, i quali, al tempo dell'Imperatore Massimiano, sotto il Giudice Anolino, rifiutando di sacrificare agli idoli e persistendo costantemente nella fede cristiana, entrambi, dopo aver superato altri tormenti, furono fatti percuotere con bastoni e decapitare.
In Africa la commemorazione di moltissimi santi Martiri, i quali, nella persecuzione di Valeriano, esortati alla costanza da san Numidico, furono gettati nel fuoco, e così acquistarono la palma del martirio. Lo stesso Numidico poi, quantunque fosse stato cogli altri gettato nel fuoco e coperto con sassi, tuttavia dalla if glia tratto fuori e trovato semivivo, venne curato; e dopo, per la sua virtù, meritò dal beato Cipriano d'esser fatto Prete della Chiesa Cartaginése.
A Costantinopoli i santi Martiri Giuliano, Marciano ed altri otto, i quali per aver posto un'immagine dei Salvatore sopra la porta di bronzo, per comando dell'empio Imperatore Leone, dopo molti tormenti, furono uccisi colla spada.
