Oggi l'arca santa e animata del Dio vivente, che concepì nel suo seno il Creatore, riposa nel tempio del Signore che non fu costruito da mano alcuna. E David, suo avolo, ne esulta, e con lui gli Angeli cantano inni, gli Arcangeli la celebrano, le Virtù la glorificano, i Principati esultano, le Potestà si rallegrano, le Dominazioni gioiscono, i Troni le fanno festa, i Cherubini la lodano, i Serafini predican la sua gloria. Oggi l'Eden celeste riceve il paradiso animato del nuovo Adamo, in cui fu revocata la nostra condanna, in cui fu piantato l'albero della vita, in cui fu coperta la nostra nudità.

Dagli Atti del papa Pio XII

Poiché la Chiesa universale nel corso dei secoli ha manifestato la fede nell'Assunzione corporea della beata vergine Maria, e i vescovi del mondo cattolico con quasi unanime consenso chiesero che questa verità, fondata sulla sacra Scrittura, insita profondamente nell'animo dei fedeli e sommamente consona con le altre verità rivelate, fosse definita come dogma di fede divina e cattolica, il sommo pontefice Pio XII, annuendo ai voti di tutta la Chiesa, stabilì di proclamare solennemente questo privilegio della beata vergine Maria. Perciò il primo novembre 1950, anno del massimo giubileo, a Roma, nella piazza della basilica di san Pietro, alla presenza di moltissimi cardinali e vescovi di santa romana Chiesa giunti anche dalle più remote regioni, dinanzi ad un'ingente moltitudine di fedeli, col plauso dell'universo mondo cattolico, con infallibile oracolo proclamò in questi termini l'assunzione corporea in cielo della beata vergine Maria: «Dopo aver innalzato ancora a Dio supplici istanze, ed aver invocato la luce dello Spirito di verità, a gloria di Dio onnipotente, che ha riversato in Maria la sua speciale benevolenza, ad onore del suo Figlio, re immortale dei secoli e vincitore del peccato e della morte, a maggior gloria della sua augusta Madre ed a gioia ed esultanza di tutta la Chiesa, per l'autorità di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, dei santi apostoli Pietro e Paolo e nostra, pronunziamo, dichiariamo e definiamo esser dogma da Dio rivelato che l'immacolata Madre di Dio sempre vergine Maria, terminato il corso della vita terrena, fu assunta alla gloria celeste in anima e corpo».

La Chiesa celebra frequentemente e con devozione le feste sacre alla Madre di Dio, perché festeggiando spesso in certi tempi dell'anno e con pubbliche cerimonie, fra tutti i beati e beate, la beatissima Madre del Signore e Dio nostro, ella sa certo di compiere un dovere grato a Dio e degno dei fedeli. Però tra le feste che in tanti secoli si rispettano religiosamente fino ad oggi, quella dell'Assunta è considerata la più grande e tiene il primo posto. In verità nessun giorno fu per Maria più lieto e giocondo; basti pensare che in esso le fu conferita solennemente la felicità dell'anima e del corpo. Perciò mai così come allora ella esultò grandemente e in modo mirabile nel Dio vivo, con lo spirito, con l'anima e con il corpo e poté dire con sommo diritto: «Ha guardato all'umiltà della sua ancella, per questo tutte le generazioni mi chiameranno beata: poiché grandi cose ha fatto in me colui che è potente».
Abbiamo udito leggere dal santo Vangelo, che una pia donna, per nome Marta, diede ospitalità al Signore. E mentr'ella era occupata in servirlo, Maria, sua sorella, stava seduta ai piedi del Signore e ascoltava la sua parola. Quella faticava, questa riposava; l'una dava, l'altra riceveva copiosamente. Marta tutta affaccendata nell'occuparsi della cura del servizio, interpellò il Signore, lamentandosi che sua sorella non l'aiutasse punto nel lavoro.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. La grazia è cosparsa sulle tue labbra;
* Perciò Dio t'ha benedetta in eterno.

Perciò, o beata e augusta Madre, noi, che vogliamo bene a te e a tuo Figlio, non possiamo non essere profondamente contenti per codesta tua limpida e impensabile felicità. Infatti ciò che Dio disse a te e di te, si compie e si completa con una conclusione felicissima. Tu sei felice, non soltanto per la tua fede, ma anche perché oggi hai conseguito gli effetti e lo scopo della tua fede e delle tue opere; ora hai meritato di sperimentare la dolcissima visione di Colui che tu avevi amato e desiderato con tutta te stessa. Tu ospitasti l'Emmanuele che entrava nella città terrena come un forestiero; e ora lui ti restituisce l'ospitalità ricevendoti nella sua reggia; come la madre di Salomone, tu sei onorata dal tuo figlio, che è re.

Giorno felice! Oggi dal deserto di questo mondo viene trasportato nella città santa del cielo un tesoro prezioso: gli abitanti del cielo ne hanno immensa gioia comune e immensa ammirazione. Giorno felice! Oggi la sposa, l'ardente e continuo desiderio della sposa viene soddisfatto: ella trovò quanto aveva cercato, ricevette ciò che aveva bramato, possedette quello che aveva atteso: ora è appagata dalla visione e dal gusto di quella gioia immensa e totale. Giorno felice! Oggi quella umilissima schiava del Signore fu così sublimata e innalzata da diventare regina del cielo, signora della terra; ella dopo il Cristo è posta nel trono tanto in alto da non poter salire più in su. Giorno felice e santo! Oggi nel regno di Dio essa venne costituita e confermata regina e madre potente e clemente per noi, affinché essa, che pur rimane sempre madre del giudice, sia madre di misericordia che ci protegge, intercedendo per noi presso il Cristo e procurandoci ciò che è necessario alla nostra salvezza.

Since indeed the universal Church hath at all times and throughout the ages manifested faith in the bodily Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and since the Bishops of the whole world by an almost unanimous agreement have petitioned that this truth, which is enshrined in Sacred Scripture and deeply rooted in the souls of Christ's faithful, and is also truly in accord with other revealed truths, should be defined as a dogma of the divine and Catholic Faith, Pope Pius XII, acceding to the requests of the whole Church, decreed that this privilege of the Blessed Virgin Mary be solemnly proclaimed, and thus, on the first day of November of the year of the Great Jubilee, nineteen hundred and fifty, at Rome, in the open square before the Basilica of St. Peter, surrounded by a throng of many Cardinals and Bishops of the Holy Roman Church who had come from distant parts of the earth, and before a great multitude of the faithful, with the whole Catholic world rejoicing, proclaimed in these words and with infallible statement the bodily Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven: Wherefore, having offered to God continual prayers of supplication, and having invoked the light of the Spirit of Truth, to the glory of Almighty God who hath enriched the Virgin Mary with his special favour; in honour of his Son, the immortal King of ages and victor over sin and death; for the increase of the glory of the same august Mother, and for the joy and exultation of the whole Church, by the authority of Our Lord Jesus Christ, of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that: The Immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever Virgin, was, at the end of her earthly life, assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.

The Church frequently and reverently keepeth feastdays dedicated to the Mother of God, realizing that it is a work pleasing to God and worthy of the faithful if many feasts, with fixed dates and public ceremonies, are celebrated in honour of the most blessed of all the blessed in heaven, the Mother of our Lord and God. Among all these feasts which have been celebrated so devotedly for so many years, even unto the present day, the Feast of the Assumption is considered the greatest and holdeth chief place. Indeed there was no happier or more joyful day for Mary, if we duly consider the happiness of both body and soul granted to her on that day. Then especially, as never before, her spirit, soul and body rejoiced wondrously in the living God and she could rightfully say: He hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden; for behold, all generations shall call me blessed; for he that is mighty hath magnified me.

August 16th 2026, the 3rd day of the Moon, we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Hyacinth, of the Order of Preachers, [who died at Cracow, in Poland, upon the feast-day of the Assumption, in the year 1257, and] whose feast Pope Clement VIII, when he enrolled his name among those of the Saints, ordered to be kept on the morrow thereof.
Upon the same 16th day of August, were born into the better life:

At Rome, [in the year 410,] the holy Deacon Titus. While the city was occupied by the Goths he was distributing money to the poor, when a tribune of the barbarians ordered him to be killed.
At Nice, in Bithynia, the holy physician Diomede, who in the persecution under Diocletian was for Christ's faith's sake slain with the sword, and so finished his testimony.

At Ferentino, in Latium, the holy centurion Ambrose, who in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian was tortured in diverse ways, and when he had passed unhurt through the fire was sunk in water, and so entered into rest.
