Discorso sulle Lodi della Vergine, a principio
Dalla radice di Jesse è uscito il re David, e dalla tribù reale di David la santa Vergine: santa, dico, e figlia di uomini santi, i cui genitori furono Gioacchino e Anna; i quali per la loro vita certamente piacquero a Dio, e meritarono ancora d'avere sì bel frutto, la santa Vergine Maria, tempio insieme e Madre di Dio. Ora Gioacchino, Anna e Maria, offrivano manifestamente fra loro tre un sacrificio di lode alla Trinità. Infatti Gioacchino significa: Preparazione del Signore, essendo che lui preparò il tempio del Signore, cioè la Vergine. Anna a sua volta significa: Grazia, perché Gioacchino e Anna ottennero colle loro preghiere la grazia di produrre il frutto che fu loro accordato, la santa Vergine; Gioacchino poi pregava sulla montagna, e Anna nel suo giardino.

℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Discorso 1 sulla Natività della Vergine Maria, quasi a principio
Siccome la Vergine Madre di Dio doveva nascere da Anna, la natura non osò produrre niente prima del germe della grazia; ma attese che la grazia avesse prodotto il suo frutto. Infatti bisognava che Maria fosse la prima a venire alla luce, dovendo ella generare il Primogenito di tutte le creature, colui in cui tutte le cose sono state fatte. O coppia felice Gioacchino e Anna! Tutta la creazione vi è debitrice. Poiché per voi essa poté offrire al Creatore il più prezioso dei doni, 'cioè la casta madre, che sola era degna del Creatore.

Arrossisca di onta Nestorio, e si copra la faccia colle mani. Questo fanciullo è Dio. Come dunque non sarà Madre di Dio chi l'ha dato alla luce? Chi non rende omaggio alla santa Madre di Dio, è respinto dalla Divinità. E questa dottrina non è soltanto mia; l'ho ricevuta come eredità preziosissima dal padre Gregorio il teologo. O coppia felice Gioacchino e Anna! La vostra purezza ben si riconosce dal frutto del vostro seno, secondo che dice Cristo in un luogo: «Li conoscerete dai loro frutti» Matt. 7,16. Voi avete regolato la vostra maniera di vita com'era accetta a Dio e degna di colei che doveva nascere da voi. Adempiendo costantemente e santamente i vostri doveri, avete prodotto un tesoro di verginità.

Omelia di san Giovanni Damasceno
Libro 4 della Fede ortodossa, cap. 15 sulla genealogia del Signore e della santa Madre di Dio
Che Giuseppe discendesse dalla tribù di David, i santissimi Evangelisti Matteo e Luca l'hanno dimostrato chiaramente. Ma c'è questa differenza fra loro, che Matteo fa discendere Giuseppe da Davide per Salomone; Luca invece per Natan. Intanto tutti due passano sotto silenzio la genealogia della Vergine. Di che fa d'uopo sapere, che né presso gli Ebrei né nella sacra Scrittura c'era uso di stabilire la genealogia delle donne. Ed era regolato per legge che nessun uomo prendesse moglie in altra tribù. E quindi Giuseppe, ch'era della famiglia di David e che praticava la giustizia (elogio che gli fa il divino Vangelo), non avrebbe certamente sposata la santa Vergine contrariamente alla prescrizione della legge, s'ella non avesse avuto origine dalla stessa stirpe reale. Ragione per cui bastò all'Evangelista di mostrare d'onde è disceso Giuseppe.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

From the Sermons of St. Epiphanius, Bishop (of Pavia)
Discourse on the Praises of the Virgin
From the Root of Jesse sprang King David, and from the stock of King David, the Holy Virgin. Holy I call her, and the daughter of holy men. Her father and mother were Joachim and Anne, who pleased God in their lives, and brought forth an offspring well pleasing to Him, even the Holy Virgin Mary, at once the Temple and the Mother of God. These three, Joachim, Anne, and Mary, clearly offered up unto the Trinity a sacrifice of praise. For the name Joachim being interpreted, signifieth “the preparation of the Lord”, and out of him was prepared the Temple of the Lord, namely, the Virgin. The name Anne signifieth grace, and she and Joachim did indeed receive a grace when, in answer to their prayers, they generated such an offspring, compassing the Holy Virgin. Joachim prayed upon the mountain and Anne in her garden.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him;
* And gave him perpetual glory.

1st on the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Since it was to be that the Virgin Mother of God should be born of Anne, nature dared not to produce any other child before this child of grace, but humbly waited until grace should have produced her's. It behoved that she should come into the world as a first-born, who was to bear the First-born of every creature, even Him by Whom all things were made. O blessed couple, Joachim and Anne unto you is all creation laid under debt, since through you creation hath offered to the Creator this noblest of gifts, namely, that chaste mother, who alone was worthy of the Creator.

℟. The Lord loved him and beautified him; He clothed him with a robe of glory,

Bk. iv on the Orthodox Faith
That Joseph sprang from the lineage of David, the most holy Evangelists Matthew and Luke have clearly shown. There is this difference between them, that Matthew traceth the pedigree from David through Solomon, and Luke through Nathan. But both of them pass in silence over the descent of the Holy Virgin. In explanation of this we shall find on investigation that among the Jews, and in the Holy Scriptures, it hath never been in use to chronicle the pedigrees of women. But the Law containeth a warning against the tribes intermarrying one with another. Joseph was of the same tribe as David, namely, Judah, and since he was a just man (this is the praise which the Gospel of God giveth him,) he would not have espoused the Holy Virgin, unless she had been of the same race, as such an union would not have been in accordance with the commandment of the law. For this reason the Evangelist held it enough to have shown the descent of Joseph.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
* May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them.

A Cartagine i santi Martiri Liberàto Abate, Bonifàcio Diacono, Servo e Rùstico Suddiaconi, Rogàto e Sèttimo Monaci, e Màssimo fanciullo, i quali, nella persecuzione dei Vàndali, sotto il Re Unnerico, per la confessione della fede cattolica e per la difesa dell'unico Battesimo, furono tormentati con vari ed inauditi supplizi, e all'ultimo inchiodati sui legni, coi quali dovevano essere bruciati; ma, essendosi più volte acceso il fuoco, questo per divina virtù sempre si spense; perciò per ordine del Re furono percossi coi remi, e, fracassata loro la testa, uccisi, e così compirono il nobile corso del loro combattimento, coronati dal Signore.
Nell'Acàia san Miróne, Prete e Martire, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Décio ed il Preside Antipatro, dopo molti tormenti, fu decapitato a Cizico.
A Cesarèa, in Cappadócia, il natale di san Mamànte Martire, il quale, figlio dei santi Martiri Teodoro e Rufina, patì un lungo martirio dalla fanciullezza fino alla vecchiaia, e finalmente, al tempo dell'Imperatore Aureliàno, sotto il Preside Alessàndro, lo compì felicemente, e fu con somme lodi celebrato dai santi Padri Basilio e Gregorio Nazianzéno.
A Nicomédia i santi Martiri Stratone, Filippo ed Eutichiàno, i quali, condannati alle fiere e rimasti illesi, per mezzo del fuoco compirono il martirio.
A Tolemàide, nella Palestina, la passione dei santi Martiri Pàolo e Giuliana Vergine, sua sorella, i quali, sotto l'Imperatore Aureliano, rimanendo inflessibili nella confessione di Cristo, furono ambedue fatti affliggere con vari e crudelissimi tormenti, e finalmente decapitare.

At Carthage, in Africa, [in the year 483,] the holy martyrs Liberatus the Abbot, Boniface the Deacon, Servus and Rusticus the Sub-Deacons, the monks Rogatus and Septimus, and the boy Maximus. In the persecution by the Vandals under King Hunneric, they were put to diverse and unheard-of tortures, on account of their confession of the Catholic faith and their defence of one baptism at last they were nailed to the wood upon which they were to be burnt, and the fire was several times kindled but by the power of God always extinguished. Then the king commanded to beat in their heads with the handles of oars, and so they finished the lovely course of their fight, and were crowned by the Lord.
At Caesarea, in Cappadocia, [about the year 273,] the holy martyr Mamas, who endured one long martyrdom from his childhood to his old age, and at last happily finished it under the President Alexander in the reign of the Emperor Aurelian. The holy fathers Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus highly extol him.
