Lettura 4
Giacinto, Polacco, nacque da genitori nobili e cristiani nel castello di Kamin in diocesi di Breslavia. Istruito fin da fanciullo nelle lettere, dopo aver compito gli studi di giurisprudenza e sacra scrittura, ammesso fra i canonici di Cracovia, li sorpassò tutti per insigne pietà di vita e profonda erudizione. Ricevuto in Roma nell'ordine dei Predicatori dallo stesso fondatore san Domenico, praticò colla più grande santità, finché visse, la regola perfetta di vita ricevuta da lui. Conservò perpetua castità; amò la modestia, la pazienza, l'umiltà, l'astinenza e le altre virtù, come patrimonio assicurato d'un religioso.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano
* e gli procurò eterna gloria.

Lettura 5
Bruciando d'amore per Dio, passava spesso le intere notti a pregare e castigare il corpo, al quale non concedeva altro sollievo che l'appoggio d'una pietra, altro letto che la nuda terra. Rinviato in patria, fondò dapprima a Frisac un grandissimo convento del suo ordine, e poi un altro a Cracovia. Quindi dopo averne innalzati altri quattro in altre provincie del regno di Polonia, è incredibile i frutti che vi fece colla predicazione della parola di Dio e colla purezza della vita. Non passava giorno, che non desse qualche chiara prova della sua fede, pietà e santità.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Lettura 6
Lo zelo del santissimo uomo per la salvezza del prossimo fu segnalato da Dio coi più grandi miracoli. Fra questi uno dei più insigni avvenne allorché presso Wisgrado egli attraversò, senza alcun battello, il fiume Vistola straripato, e lo fece passare pure ai suoi compagni stendendo sulle onde il suo mantello. Avendo perseverato, dopo la sua professione, quasi quarant'anni in un genere di vita ammirabile, e preannunziato ai suoi confratelli il giorno della sua morte, nella festa dell'assunzione della Vergine, dopo recitate le Ore canoniche e ricevuto con somma venerazione i sacramenti della Chiesa, a quelle parole: «Nelle tue mani, o Signore» Ps. 30,6, rese lo spirito a Dio, nell'anno della salute 1257. Illustrato da miracoli anche dopo morte, Papa Clemente VIII l'annoverò fra i Santi.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Noi teniamo in mano le lucerne accese, quando diamo al nostro prossimo con le buone opere esempi che lo illuminano. A proposito di tali opere il Signore dice: «La vostra luce risplenda davanti agli uomini, affinché essi vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.
℣. Ecco un uomo irreprensibile, vero cultore di Dio: si astenne da ogni malvagità e perseverò nella propria innocenza.

Lettura 8
Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Lettura 9
«E voi siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni dalle nozze, per aprirgli subito appena giungerà e picchierà alla porta». Il Signore in verità viene quando si affretta al giudizio; picchia poi quando, con gli affanni della malattia, ci avverte che ormai la morte è vicina. Noi gli apriamo subito, se lo riceviamo con amore. Non vuole infatti aprire al giudice che picchia, colui che ha paura di uscire dal corpo e ha timore di vedere questo giudice, che ricorda di aver disprezzato. Ma chi è tranquillo per la sua speranza e per il suo modo di agire, apre subito a chi picchia, perché accoglie con gioia il giudice; e, quando è vicino il tempo della morte, egli si rallegra pensando ad una gloriosa retribuzione.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Reading 4
Hyacinth was a Pole, and was born in the year 1185 of the noble and Christian family (of the Counts of Odrowatz,) in the town of Camien, in the diocese of Wratislaw. He was trained up in learning from his youth, and after studying law and theology, became a Canon of Crakow, where he was eminent above his fellows by the singular godliness of his life and the depth of his learning. Being at Rome, in 1218, he was received into the Order of Friars Preachers by the Founder, St. Dominic, himself, and kept in holiness to the end of his life the rule of perfect living which he had learnt from him. He remained always a virgin, and loved modesty, long-suffering, lowliness, self-restraint, and all other good graces as his heritage in the life of a Friar.

In the heat of his love for God, he sometimes passed whole nights in pouring forth prayers and chastising his body, to which he never gave rest but in leaning against a stone or lying upon the ground. He was sent back to his own country, and, on the way, founded a very large house of his Order at Friesach and soon afterwards another at Crakow. In other provinces of the kingdom of Poland he founded four others, and it passeth belief what success he had with all kinds of men, by his preaching of the Word of God, and the innocency of his life. Not a day passed wherein he did not display some bright gift of faith, godliness, or innocency.

The zeal of this most holy man for the salvation of his neighbors was that which God marked by His greatest miracles. Among these is famous the time when coming to the River Vistula near Wisgrade, and finding it in flood, he crossed it without a boat, drawing over also his three companions standing upon the waves upon his outspread mantle. He led a wonderful life for nearly forty years after his profession, and then foretold to his brethren the day of his death. Upon the very day of the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, he finished the recitation of the Office of the Church, received the Sacraments with the utmost reverence, and then with the words, Into thy hands, O Lord, gave up his soul to God in the year of salvation 1257. He was illustrious for miracles even after his death, and Pope Clement VIII. numbered him among the saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.

A Palestrina il natale di sant'Agapito Martire, il quale, essendo nell'età di quindici anni ed ardendo dell'amore di Cristo, per ordine dell'Imperatore Aureliàno, fu preso, e prima con duri nervi lunghissimamente battuto, quindi, sotto il Prefetto Antioco, fu sottoposto a più gravi supplizi; e poi, essendo stato gettato ai leoni per ordine dell'Imperatore e rimasto incolume, venne percosso colla spada dai carnefici, e così fu coronato.
A Roma i beati Giovanni e Crispo Preti, i quali, nella persecuzione di Diocleziàno, seppellirono con grandissima carità molti corpi di Santi, e così poterono partecipare anch'essi ai loro meriti e acquistare le gioie della vita eterna.
Così pure a Roma i santi Martiri Erma, Serapióne e Poliéno, i quali, trascinati per luoghi stretti, sassosi ed aspri, resero le anime a Dio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
August 18th 2026, the 5th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, upon the Lavican Way, [in the year 328,] holy [widow] Helen, [Empress of the West,] mother of that most religious Emperor Constantine the Great, who was the first to leave to other princes the pattern of how to protect and spread the Church.
At Palestrina, Italy, [in the year 274,] the holy martyr Agapitus, [principal patron of the Church in Palestrina]; he was fifteen years of age, and hot with the love of Christ. He was tried by command of the Emperor Aurelian, and was first scourged for a very long time with raw thongs, afterwards he suffered worse under the Prefect Antiochus. By command of the Emperor he was thrown to lions, but as these hurt him not at all the servants smote him with the sword, and so he went to be crowned.
At Rome, the blessed Priests John and Crispus. During the persecution under Diocletian they busied themselves in burying many bodies of the Saints, with whom they themselves were afterward made fellows, and gained the gladness of life eternal [by martyrdom.]
Likewise at Rome, the holy martyrs Hermas, Serapion, and Polysenus, who were dragged through strait, rocky, and rough places until they gave up their souls to God.
