Lettura 4
Giovanni, nacque nel 1601 nel villaggio detto Ri, in Diocesi di Séez da onorati e pii genitori. Fanciullo ancora, rinvigorito dal pane degli Angeli, fece prontamente il voto di perpetua castità. Ricevuto nel Collegio di Caen diretto dai Padri della Compagnia di Gesù, emerse per singolare pietà; e, affidatosi alla protezione della Vergine Maria, sigillò col proprio sangue il patto speciale fatto con lei appena adolescente. Compiuto con molta lode il corso delle lettere e della filosofia, e disprezzate le nozze che erangli state offerte, diede il nome alla Congregazione dell'Oratorio di Berulle, e fu ordinato sacerdote a Parigi. Arse di meravigliosa carità verso il prossimo: infatti in molti luoghi prestò l'opera sua sollecita nel curare i corpi e le anime dei colpiti dalla peste asiatica. Fatto Rettore della Casa dell'Oratorio a Caen, dopo aver pensato molto a formare giovani atti al ministero ecclesiastico e dopo aver implorato l'aiuto di Dio, con animo forte, sebbene a malincuore, si separò dai compagni coi quali aveva vissuto per vent'anni.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Associatisi pertanto cinque sacerdoti, nell'anno 1643, nella festa dell'Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria, istituì la Congregazione dei Preti, dandole il nome dei Santissimi Cuori di Gesù e Maria, e aprì il primo Seminario a Caen, cui tennero dietro, per opera del medesimo, molti altri nella Normandia e nella piccola Bretagna. Per richiamare alla vita cristiana le donne peccatrici, fondò l'Istituto di Nostra Signora della Carità; e ramo di questo nobilissimo albero è la Congregazione d'Angers del Buon Pastore. Inoltre eresse la Società del Cuore Ammirabile della Madre di Dio e altre opere di carità. Diede alla luce molti belli scritti, e quale Missionario Apostolico evangelizzò tanti villaggi, paesi, città e fin la stessa casa reale, sino alla più avanzata età.

Il suo zelo singolare rifulse nel promuovere la salutare devozione verso i Sacratissimi Cuori di Gesù e Maria, il cui culto liturgico, da prestarsi ad essi, primo tra tutti, non senza una certa ispirazione divina, ideò, onde del medesimo culto è riputato il padre, il dottore, l'apostolo. Resistendo fortemente alle dottrine dei Giansenisti, conservò inalterato l'ossequio alla cattedra di Pietro, e per i suoi nemici, come per fratelli, pregò Dio assiduamente. Spossato più dalle fatiche che dagli anni, bramando d'esser sciolto e di essere con Cristo, il giorno 19 di Agosto dell'anno 1680, ripetendo spesso i dolci nomi di Gesù e Maria, placidamente spirò. Illustre per molti miracoli il Papa Pio X lo iscrisse nell'albo dei Beati, e risplendendo per nuovi miracoli il Papa Pio XI, nell'anno santo, nella domenica di Pentecoste, l'annoverò tra i Santi e ne estese l'Ufficio e la Messa a tutta la Chiesa.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Noi teniamo in mano le lucerne accese, quando diamo al nostro prossimo con le buone opere esempi che lo illuminano. A proposito di tali opere il Signore dice: «La vostra luce risplenda davanti agli uomini, affinché essi vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

Lettura 8
Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Ma anche se si osservano i due comandamenti, rimane il dovere, per chiunque si tratti, di tendere con la speranza alla patria superna e di non star lontano in alcun modo dai vizi soltanto per l'onore di questo mondo.

«E voi siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni dalle nozze, per aprirgli subito appena giungerà e picchierà alla porta». Il Signore in verità viene quando si affretta al giudizio; picchia poi quando, con gli affanni della malattia, ci avverte che ormai la morte è vicina. Noi gli apriamo subito, se lo riceviamo con amore. Non vuole infatti aprire al giudice che picchia, colui che ha paura di uscire dal corpo e ha timore di vedere questo giudice, che ricorda di aver disprezzato. Ma chi è tranquillo per la sua speranza e per il suo modo di agire, apre subito a chi picchia, perché accoglie con gioia il giudice; e, quando è vicino il tempo della morte, egli si rallegra pensando ad una gloriosa retribuzione.

Reading 4
John was born in the year 1601, of pious and respectable parents, at a village commonly known as Ri, in the diocese of Seez. While still a boy, when he was fed with the bread of Angels, he cheerfully made a vow of perpetual chastity. Having been received at the College of Caen, directed by the Fathers of the Society of Jesus, he was conspicuous for a remarkable piety; and, committing himself to the protection of the Virgin Mary, when still a youth he signed with his own blood, the special covenant he had entered into with her. Having completed his courses of letters and of philosophy with great distinction, and having spurned opportunities of marriage which had been arranged for him, he enrolled himself with the Congregation of the Oratory de Bérulle, and was ordained priest at Paris. He was on fire with a marvellous love towards his neighbour: for he took the most constant pains in caring for both the souls and bodies of those smitten with the Asiatic plague, in many different places. He was made Rector of the Oratorian house at Caen, but since he had been thinking for a long time of educating suitable young men for the ministry of the Church, earnestly asking for the divine assistance, with a brave spirit he most regretfully departed from the associates with whom he had lived for twenty years.

Accordingly, associating five priests with himself, in the year 1643, on the feastday of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he founded a Congregation of Priests, to whom he gave the most holy names of Jesus and Mary, and opened the first seminary at Caen; and a great many others followed immediately in Normandy and Brittany, also founded by him. For the recalling of sinful women to a Christian life, he founded the Order of Our Lady of Charity; of which most noble tree, the Congregation of the Good Shepherd of Angers is a branch. Furthermore, he founded the Society of the Admirable Heart of the Mother of God, and other charitable institutions. He was the author of many excellent treatises, and laboured as an Apostolic Missionary to the very end of his life, preaching the Gospel in very many villages, towns, and cities, and even in the royal court.

His matchless zeal was very conspicuous in promoting the salutary devotion towards the most sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, whose liturgical worship he was the first of all to devise, although not without some divine inspiration. He is therefore held to be the father, the teacher, and the apostle of that worship. Courageously withstanding the doctrines of the Jansenists, he preserved unalterable obedience towards the Chair of Peter, and he constantly prayed to God, both for his enemies as well as for his brethren. Broken by so many labours, rather than by years, desiring to be freed and to be with Christ, on the 19th day of August, 1680, frequently repeating the sweet names of Jesus and Mary, he died in peace. As he became illustrious by many miracles, Pope Pius X added him to the list of the Blessed, and as he still shone forth with new signs and wonders, Pope Pius XI, in the holy year and on the day of Pentecost, placed him among the Saints, and extended his Office and Mass to the universal Church.

Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.

Famiglie religiose: concedi, che, come ne veneriamo -la pietà e i meriti, così ne apprendiamo anche gli esempi di virtù.

Nel territorio di Langres la deposizione di san Bernardo, primo Abate di Chiaravàlle, glorioso per la vita, per la dottrina e per i miracoli, dal Sommo Pontefice Pio ottavo dichiarato e confermato Dottore della Chiesa universale.
Presso il monte Senàrio, in Toscàna, il natale di san Manétte Confessore, uno dei sette Fondatori dell'Ordine dei Servi della beata Vergine Maria, il quale, cantando inni alla medesima, spirò. La festa di lui e dei Compagni si celebra il dodici Febbraio.
Nella Giudèa san Samuéle Profeta, le cui sacre ossa (come scrive il beato Girolamo) furono da Arcàdio Augusto trasportate a Costantinópoli, e riposte presso Sèttimo.
A Cipro san Lucio Senatore, il quale, vista la costanza di Teodóro, Vescovo di Cirène, sottoposto al martirio, si convertì alla fede di Cristo, e attirò ad essa anche il Preside Digniàno, col quale andato a Cipro, ivi, vedendo che altri Cristiani erano coronati per la confessione del Signore, si offerse spontaneamente, e colla decapitazione meritò la stessa coróna del martirio.
In Tràcia trentasette santi Martiri, i quali, sotto il Preside Apelliàno, per la fede di Cristo, dopo essere state loro tagliate le mani ed i piedi, furono gettati in una fornace ardente.
Nello stesso luogo i santi Martiri Sevèro e Ménnone Centurione, i quali, consumati collo stesso genere di morte, vincitori volarono al cielo.
A Córdova, nella Spagna, i santi Martiri Leovigildo e Cristoforo Monaci, i quali, nella persecuzione degli Arabi, per aver difeso la fede cristiana, furono gettati in carcere, e poco dopo, decapitati e gettati nel fuoco, ricevettero la palma del martirio.

In the country of Langres, [in the year 1153,] holy Bernard, the first Abbot of Clairvaux, glorious for his life, his teaching, and his miracles, whom the Supreme Pontiff Pius VIII declared and confirmed a Doctor of the Universal Church.
In Judea, [in the year 1043 before Christ,] the holy Prophet Samuel, whose sacred bones, as writeth blessed Jerome, were carried to Constantinople by the Emperor Arcadius, and laid near the Hebdomon.
On the same day, [in the fourth century,] the holy Senator Lucius. He was turned to the faith of Christ by seeing the constancy with which Theodore, Bishop of Cyrene, underwent martyrdom, and drew the President Dignian to the same belief; they went together to Cyprus, and when he saw other Christians there being crowned for confessing the Lord, he thrust himself forward and gained the same crown of martyrdom by being beheaded.
In Thrace, thirty-seven holy martyrs, who under the President Apellian, for Christ's faith's sake, had their hands and feet cut off, and were cast into a furnace of fire. Likewise the holy martyrs Severus and Memnon the centurion, who finished their testimony by the same kind of death, and departed to heaven as conquerors.

56:2 Abbi pietà di me, o Dio, abbi pietà di me, * perché in te confida l'anima mia.
56:2 E all'ombra delle tue ali io spererò, * sino a che passi l'iniquità.
56:3 Io griderò a Dio Altissimo, * a Dio che mi benefica.
56:4 Mandò dal cielo a liberarmi: * coprì di vergogna quelli che mi conculcavano.
56:4 Dio mandò la sua misericordia e la sua verità, * e liberò l'anima mia di mezzo ai giovani leoni; mi addormentai conturbato.
56:5 I figli degli uomini hanno per denti lance e saette, * e per lingua una spada acuta.
56:6 Innalzati sopra i cieli, o Dio, * e la tua gloria risplenda per tutta la terra.
56:7 Tesero un laccio a miei piedi: * e fecero piegare l'anima mia.

56:8 Il mio cuore, o Dio, è pronto: il mio cuore è pronto; * canterò e salmeggerò.

Salmo 57 [3]
57:2 Se davvero voi parlate di giustizia, * giudicate con rettitudine, o figli degli uomini.
57:3 Ma voi nel cuore operate iniquità; * sulla terra le vostre mani ordiscono ingiustizie.
57:4 I peccatori hanno fuorviato sin dal seno materno, hanno deviato sin dalla nascita: * hanno detto falsità.
57:5 Il loro furore è simile a quello di un serpente: * a quello di un'aspide sorda, che si tura le orecchie.
57:6 E non ode la voce dell'incantatore: * e del mago abile nell'ammaliare.
57:7 Dio stritolerà loro i denti in bocca: * il Signore spezzerà le mascelle dei leoni.
57:8 Si ridurranno al nulla come acqua che scorre; * egli tien teso il suo arco, fino a che siano abbattuti.
57:9 Come cera che si fonde saranno distrutti: * cadde sopra di essi il fuoco, e non videro più il sole.
57:10 Prima che le vostre spine si sentano fatte un roveto, * così [Dio] nel suo sdegno li divorerà quasi ancora vivi.
57:11 Il giusto si rallegrerà nel vedere la vendetta; * laverà le sue mani nel sangue del peccatore:
57:12 E l'uomo dirà: C'è davvero una ricompensa per il giusto: * c'è davvero un Dio che giudica gli uomini sulla terra.
