Bernardo, nato a Fontaine nella Borgogna da nobile famiglia, giovanetto vivamente sollecitato da donne per la sua grande bellezza, non si poté mai smuovere dal proposito di conservarsi casto. Per fuggire queste tentazioni del diavolo, a diciott'anni risolvé d'entrare nel monastero di Citeaux, culla dell'ordine di questo nome, che allora fioriva per santità. Conosciuto il disegno di Bernardo, i suoi fratelli fecero ogni sforzo per distornarnelo. Ma in ciò egli fu più eloquente e fortunato di loro; perché li convinse così bene, e molti altri con essi, del suo progetto, che ben trenta giovani abbracciarono con lui la medesima religione-. Monaco, si diede tanto al digiuno, che ogni volta che prendeva cibo, gli sembrava di subire un supplizio. Si applicò meravigliosamente anche alle veglie e all'orazione; e, votatosi alla cristiana povertà, menava sulla terra vita quasi celeste, aliena da ogni sollecitudine e cupidigia di cose caduche.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Risplendeva in lui l'umiltà, la misericordia, la dolcezza. Era così assorto nella contemplazione, che pareva non servirsi dei sensi se non per i doveri di pietà: nei quali tuttavia si comportava colla più lodevole prudenza. Occupato in questi esercizi, rifiutò il vescovado di Genova, Milano e altri, che gli venivano offerti, dichiarandosi indegno dell'onore di tanta dignità. Eletto abate di Chiaravalle, edificò in molti luoghi, dei monasteri nei quali si mantenne per lungo tempo la regola e la disciplina di Bernardo. Nel monastero dei santi Vincenzo e Anastasio a Roma, restaurato da Papa Innocenzo II, pose come abate quello che fu poi sommo Pontefice col nome d'Eugenio III; al quale indirizzò pure un suo libro della Considerazione.

Egli scrisse inoltre molte altre opere, in cui apparisce come la sua dottrina fu piuttosto un dono di Dio che frutto di studio. L'altissima riputazione della sua virtù lo fece ricercare dai più grandi prìncipi per comporre le loro controversie e venne più volte in Italia per regolare gli affari della Chiesa. Così il sommo Pontefice Innocenzo II ebbe in lui un aiuto prezioso tanto per metter fine allo scisma di Pier Leone, quanto nelle legazioni presso l'imperatore di Germania, Enrico re d'Inghilterra, e il Concilio di Pisa. Infine, a sessantatré anni d'età s'addormentò nel Signore, e, illustrato da miracoli, Papa Alessandro III l'annoverò fra i Santi. Il sommo Pontefice Pio VIII poi, con decreto della sacra Congregazione dei Riti, dichiarò e confermò san Bernardo Dottore della Chiesa universale, ordinandone a tutti la recita della Messa e l'Ufficio dei Dottori, e concesse indulgenze plenarie annuali in perpetuo a tutti quelli che nel giorno della festa del Santo avessero visitato le chiese dell'ordine Cisterciense.

Il Signore e Salvatore nostro, fratelli carissimi, ci avvisa ora con parole ed ora con opere. Infatti le sue opere sono precetti; e, quando fa qualche cosa, anche senza dir nulla, ci mostra quello che dobbiamo fare noi. Ecco, dunque, egli manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, perché sono due i precetti della carità, cioè l'amor di Dio e l'amor del prossimo, e bisogna essere almeno in due per poter praticare la carità. Infatti propriamente parlando, non si esercita la carità verso se stessi; ma l'amore, perché possa essere carità, deve avere per oggetto un altro.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Ecco dunque che il Signore manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, insinuandoci così tacitamente come, chi non ha carità verso gli altri, in nessun modo deve assumersi l'ufficio della predicazione. E con ragione si dice che li mandò davanti a sé in ogni città e luogo dove egli stava per andare. Infatti il Signore segue i suoi predicatori; la predicazione infatti precede, e allora il Signore viene ad abitare nell'anima nostra, quando è preceduto dalle parole di coloro che ci esortano; ed è così che la verità è ricevuta dallo spirito.

Reading 4
Bernard was born (in the year of salvation 1091) at a decent place in Burgundy called Fontaines. On account of extraordinary good looks, he was as a boy very much sought after by women, but he could never be turned aside from his resolution to keep chaste. To fly from these temptations of the devil, he determined at two-and-twenty years of age to enter the Monastery of Citeaux, whence the Cistercian Order took its rise. When this resolution of Bernard's became known, his brothers did all their diligence to change his purpose, but he only became the more eloquent and happy about it. Them and others he so brought over to his mind, that thirty young men entered the same Order along with him. As a monk he was so given to fasting, that as often as he had to eat, so often he seemed to be in pain. He exercised himself wonderfully in watching and prayer, and was a great lover of Christian poverty. Thus he led on earth an heavenly life, purged of all care and desire for transitory things.

He was a burning and shining light of lowliness, mercifulness, and kindness. His concentration of thought was such, that he hardly used his senses except to do good works, in which latter he acted with admirable wisdom. Thus occupied, he refused the Bishoprics of Genoa, Milan, and others, which were offered to him, declaring that he was unworthy of so high a sphere of duty. Being made Abbot of Clairvaux in 1115, he built monasteries in many places, wherein the excellent rules and discipline of Bernard long flourished. When Pope Innocent II., in 1138, restored the monastery of St. Vincent and St. Anastasius at Rome, Bernard set over it the Abbot who was afterwards the Supreme Pontiff Eugene III., and who is also the same to whom he addressed his book upon Consideration.

He was the author of many writings, in which it is manifest that his teaching was rather given him of God, than gained by hard work. In consequence of his high reputation for excellence, he was called by the most exalted Princes to act as arbiter of their disputes, and for this end, and to settle affairs of the Church, he often went to Italy. He was an eminent helper to Pope Innocent II., in putting down the schism of Peter Leoni, and worked to this end, both at the Courts of the Emperor and of Henry King of England, and in the Council of Pisa. He fell asleep in the Lord, (at Clairvaux, on the 20th day of August,) in the year 1153, the sixty-third year of his age. He was famous for miracles, and Pope Alexander III. numbered him among the Saints. Pope Pius VIII., acting on the advice of the Congregation of Sacred Rites, declared and confirmed St. Bernard a Doctor of the Universal Church. He also commanded that all should use the Mass and Office for him as for a Doctor, and granted perpetual yearly plenary indulgences to all who should visit Churches of the Cistercian Order upon the Feast-day of this Saint.

Dearly beloved brethren, our Lord and Saviour doth sometimes admonish us by words, and sometimes by works. Yea, His very works do themselves teach us for that which He doth silently His example still moveth us to copy. Behold how He sendeth forth His disciples to preach by two and two since there are two commandments to love, that is, a commandment to love God, and a commandment to love our neighbour and where there are not two, the one, being alone, hath not whereon to do the Lord's commandment. And no man can properly be said to love himself: for love tendeth outward toward our neighbour, if it be the love whereto the Gospel doth oblige us.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
* May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them.

A Roma, al campo Veràno, santa Ciriaca, Vedova e Martire, la quale, nella persecuzione di Valeriàno, avendo impiegato se stessa e tutte le sue sostanze nel servizio dei Santi, alla fine, subendo per Cristo il martirio, impiegò volontieri anche la stessa vita.
Nel territorio Gavalitàno san Privàto, Vescovo e Martire, il quale patì nella persecuzione di Valeriàno e Galliéno.
A Salóna, in Dalmazia, sant'Anastàsio Corniculàrio, il quale, vedendo che il beato Agapito sopportava con costanza i tormenti, si convertì alla fede, e, per la confessione del nome di Cristo, fu fatto uccidere dall'Imperatore Aureliano, e così Martire se ne volò al Signore.

On the morrow we keep the feast of holy Jeanne Frances Frémiot de Chantal, Foundress of the Order of Nuns of the Visitation of St Mary, at Annecy, in Savoy, of whom mention is made on the 13th day of December.
August 21st 2026, the 8th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, in the Veran Field, [San Lorenzo, in the third century,] the holy widow and martyr Cyriaca. In the Valerian persecution she spent herself, and all that she had, in ministering to the saints, and at last suffered martyrdom for Christ, and so willingly spent her life itself.
At Salona, [in the third century,] holy Anastasius, a petty officer in the army, who was converted to the faith by beholding the firmness with which the blessed martyr Agapitus bore all his torments, and who was slain by order of the Emperor Aurelian for confessing Christ's name, and so passed away as a martyr, to be ever with the Lord.
In Sardinia, the holy martyrs Luxorius, Cisellus, and Camerinus, who were slain with the sword under the President Delphius, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
