Giovanna Francesca Frémiot di Chantal, nata a Digione nella Borgogna da illustre famiglia, fin dalla prima età diede segni non dubbi di gran santità. Infatti si racconta che, appena quinquenne, confutasse un nobile Calvinista con una solidità d'argomenti superiore alla sua età, e gettasse subito sul fuoco un piccolo dono da lui offertole, dicendo: Ecco come bruceranno nell'inferno gli eretici, che rifiutano di credere alla parola di Cristo. Perduta la madre, si mise sotto la protezione della Vergine Madre di Dio, e allontanò da sé una donna di servizio, che cercava d'ispirarle il gusto del mondo. Nulla di puerile si notava nella sua condotta, abborriva i piaceri del secolo, e, non sospirando che il martirio, si dedicò tutta alle opere di religione e di pietà. Maritata dal padre al barone di Chantal, si diede alla pratica d'ogni virtù; tutta zelo nell'istruire i figli, i servi e gli altri suoi dipendenti nei princìpi della fede e a formarli ai buoni costumi. Sollevava le miserie dei poveri con immensa liberalità, e non una volta sola Dio moltiplicò le sue provvisioni, onde avvenne, che fece promessa di non negare mai niente ad alcuno che le avesse domandato l'elemosina in nome di Cristo.

Uccisole il marito in una caccia, si mise a praticare una vita più perfetta, e vi si legò col voto di castità. Ella non solo sopportò coraggiosamente la morte del marito, ma, volendo dare una testimonianza pubblica del perdono accordato, decise, vincendo se stessa, di tenere al sacro fonte il figlio dell'uccisore. Contenta di poco personale, di vitto e vesti grossolane, destinò a pii usi le sue preziose vesti. Tutto il tempo che le rimaneva libero dalle cure domestiche, l'impiegava in preghiere, pie letture e nel lavoro. Non si poté indurre mai a contrarre seconde nozze, benché vantaggiose e onorevoli. E perché nell'avvenire non fosse smossa dalla risoluzione di osservare la castità, rinnovatone il voto, s'impresse sul petto con un ferro rovente il santissimo nome di Gesù Cristo. Infiammata d'una carità crescente di giorno in giorno, si faceva condurre poveri, abbandonati, malati e quanti erano afflitti da mali i più ripugnanti; e non soltanto dava loro ospitalità, li consolava e curava, ma ne lavava altresì le sudice vesti, le rammendava e non rifuggiva di appressare le sue labbra alle loro piaghe fetide e purulenti.

Appresa da san Francesco di Sales, suo direttore spirituale, la divina volontà, abbandonò con invitto coraggio il proprio padre, il suocero, il figlio stesso, non esitando anzi di passare nell'uscire di casa, sul corpo di quest'ultimo che si opponeva alla sua vocazione, e gettò le basi del sacro istituto della Visitazione di santa Maria. Osservò rigorosissimamente le regole di questo istituto, e fu tanto amante della povertà, da gioire che le mancasse lo stesso necessario. Si addimostrò poi modello perfettissimo d'umiltà, d'obbedienza, insomma d'ogni cristiana virtù. Desiderosa in cuor suo di ascensioni sempre più alte emise il voto difficilissimo di fare sempre ciò che conoscesse essere più perfetto. Infine, diffusosi, soprattutto per opera sua, per ogni dove il pio istituto della Visitazione, dopo aver eccitato le consorelle colla parola, coll'esempio e anche con scritti ripieni di sapienza divina, alla pietà e carità, dopo aver ricevuti i santi sacramenti, onusta di meriti, se ne andò al Signore a Moulin il 13 Dicembre dell'anno 1641; san Vincenzo de' Paoli, che trovavasi molto lontano, vide l'anima di lei ricevuta in cielo da san Francesco di Sales uscitole incontro. Il suo corpo fu poi trasportato ad Annecy; ed ella essendo stata illustrata da miracoli prima e dopo morte, Benedetto XIV l'iscrisse nell'albo dei Beati, e il sommo Pontefice Clemente XIII in quello dei Santi. Il sommo Pontefice Clemente XIV poi ordinò che se ne celebrasse la festa da tutta la Chiesa il 21 Agosto.

Il regno dei cieli, fratelli carissimi, si dice simile a cose terrene, affinché l'anima si elevi da ciò che conosce a ciò che non conosce affatto, così che dall'esempio delle cose visibili si sollevi alle invisibili, e come incitata da ciò che ha appreso, s'infiammi a tal punto da imparare ad amare, per mezzo dell'affetto per un bene conosciuto, anche beni sconosciuti. Ecco dunque che il regno dei cieli si paragona ad un tesoro nascosto in un campo. L uomo che l'ha trovato, lo tiene nascosto e, per la gioia di possederlo, va a vendere tutto ciò che possiede e compra quel campo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ed in ciò si deve anche notare che il tesoro trovato viene nascosto perché sia conservato: poiché non riuscirà a difendere dagli spiriti maligni l'ardore del desiderio che sente per il cielo, colui che non lo sottrae alle umane lodi. Infatti nella vita presente ci troviamo come in una via, lungo la quale ci dirigiamo alla patria. Gli spiriti maligni ci tendono insidie lungo la strada, come ladruncoli. Portare dunque pubblicamente un tesoro per via è come desiderare di essere derubati. Ora io dico questo, non perché il prossimo non veda le nostre opere buone, poiché sta scritto: «Vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli»; ma perché non cerchiamo lodi dall'esterno per quello che facciamo. L'opera quindi sia pure pubblica, ma rimanga occulta l'intenzione; affinché noi possiamo dare al prossimo l'esempio di un'opera buona, e tuttavia con l'intenzione, per la quale cerchiamo di piacere soltanto a Dio, desideriamo sempre il segreto.

Vende subito ogni cosa per comperare questo campo chi, rinunziando ai piaceri della carne, con pratica esatta di questa vita di cielo, calpesta tutti i suoi desideri terreni, così che nulla più gli piaccia di ciò che solletica la carne, e il suo spirito non tema nulla di ciò che distrugge la vita carnale.

Jeanne Frances Fremiot de Chantal was born of parents of the highest rank, at Dijon in Burgundy, on the 23rd day of January, in the year 1575. From her earliest childhood she gave no dark promise of a life of eminent holiness. It is said that when she was scarcely fifteen years of age she confuted with precocious acuteness a Presbyterian nobleman, and when he gave her a little present she put it in the fire, saying That is how heretics will burn in hell for not believing Christ when He speaketh. On the death of her mother, she placed herself under the keeping of the Virgin Mother of God, and discharged a maid who strove to beguile her into loving the world. She had nothing youthful about her ways. She shrank from the pleasures of life. She had a strong wish that she might die a martyr. She devoted herself unweariedly to religion and godliness. Her father gave her in marriage, (at twenty years of age,) to the Baron de Chantal, and she strove to excel in all the duties and graces of a wife. She made it her work to see that her children, her servants, and all others under her authority were taught the doctrines of the faith and the practice of good living. She relieved the sufferings of the poor by plentiful almsgiving, for which purposes God not unfrequently miraculously multiplied her money. And so it came to pass that no one ever asked her for food in Christ's name and was refused it.

When her husband was accidentally killed out shooting, and in her widowhood she determined to embrace the more excellent way, and took a vow not to marry again. She bore her bereavement with resignation to the Will of God, and so far overcame her horror of the gentleman who had fired the shot, that, to show she attributed no blame to him, she stood god-mother to his little boy. She was quite content with few servants and plain cookery and dress, and sold her rich wardrobe for the benefit of charities. She received offers of second marriage which would have been both politic and honourable, but never was induced to accept one of them, and to harden herself in her intention of remaining in her widowhood, she renewed her vow to that effect, and branded on her chest with a hot iron the most holy name of Jesus Christ. Her love grew tenderer every day, and she had brought to her the starving, the abandoned, the diseased, and those who were afflicted with the most sickening disorders. Them she not only sheltered, comforted, and nursed, but washed and mended their filthy and ragged garments, and shrank not from putting her mouth to their sores oozing with disgusting matter. Whatever of her time was not taken up by her household duties she spent in prayer, reading godly books, and working.

She used the services of St. Francis de Sales as her spiritual adviser, and when she learnt from him what was the will of God, she scrupled not to disregard the wishes of her own father, brother-in-law, and even of her son, whom she left with calm determination, went forth from her home, and founded the holy Institution of the Sisters of the Visitation of St. Mary, at Annecy, upon Trinity Sunday 1610. She most rigidly kept the rules of this Institute, and loved so well to be poor, that it made her glad to lack even the necessaries of life. She showed herself a model of Christian lowliness, obedience, and all graces. Having settled in her heart still to go up higher and higher towards the Temple of the Lord, she bound herself by a most difficult vow always to do that which she should understand to be best. It was chiefly through her labour that the holy Institute of the Visitation became spread far and wide, and she stirred up the sisters to godliness and love by her words, by her example, and by writings full of Divine wisdom. She duly received the Sacraments before her death, and then, at Moulins, on the 13th day of December, in the year 1641, departed hence, to be for ever with the Lord. St. Vincent of Paul, who was far distant, in a vision beheld her soul borne to heaven, and St. Francis de Sales coming to meet it. Her body was afterwards taken to Annecy. She was famous for miracles both before and after her death, and Pope Benedict XIV. enrolled her among the Blessed, and Pope Clement XIII. among the Saints. Pope Clement XIV. ordered her Feast-day to be kept by the whole Church upon the twenty-first day of August.

Dearly beloved brethren, the kingdom of heaven is likened unto the things of earth, to the end that by the mean of things which we know, our mind may rise to the contemplation of the things which we know not by the example of things which are seen, may fix her gaze on things which are not seen by the touch of things which she useth, may be warmed towards the things which she useth not; by things which she knoweth and loveth, to love also the things which she knoweth not. For, behold, “the kingdom of heaven is likened unto treasure hid in a field, the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and, for joy thereof, goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field.”

And herein we must remark that the treasure, when once it hath been found, is hidden to keep it safe. He whose intimate yearnings after God are not hidden from the praise of men, is open thereby to the attacks of evil spirits. In this life we are, as it were, journeying homewards on a road beset by evil spirits who are like highwaymen. He therefore inviteth robbery who carrieth his treasure ostentatiously. Doubtless our neighbour should be able to see our good works, as it is written: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” But this is not to be understood to mean that we are to seek the praise of men by what we do. Rather, let us in such wise work in the open that the inner intention of devotion is not advertised. So we shall give an example to our neighbour, and yet keep hidden, except from the sight of God, our purpose of pleasing him.

Ottava dell'Assunzione della beata Vergine Maria.
Festa del Cuore Immacolato della stessa beata Vergine Maria.
A Roma, sulla via Ostiènse, il natale di san Timòteo Martire, il quale, preso da Tarquinio, Prefetto della città, e straziato con lunga prigionia, e, per non aver voluto sacrificare agli idoli, tre volte flagellato e afflitto con gravissimi supplizi, da ultimo fu decollato.
A Porto Romano sant'Ippòlito Vescovo, chiarissimo per la erudizione, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Alessandro, per la splendida confessione della fede, gettato, con le mani ed i piedi legati, in una profonda fossa, piena di acqua, ricevette la palma del martirio. Il suo corpo fu sepolto dai Cristiani presso il medesimo luogo.
Ad Autun san Sinforiàno Martire, il quale, al tempo dell'Imperatore Aureliano, non volendo sacrificare agli idoli, prima fu tormentato con battiture, quindi posto in prigione; e alla fine, decapitato, compì il martirio.
A Todi, in Umbria, san Filippo Benizi, Confessore, Fiorentino, propagatore dell'Ordine dei Servi della beata Vergine Maria ed uomo di singolare umiltà, dal Sommo Pontefice Clemènte decimo ascritto nel numero dei Santi. La sua festa si celebra nel giorno seguente.
