Dal sermone 9 sulla visitazione
Sarà possibile che un uomo, con la sua bocca empia o addirittura abominevole, abbia la presunzione di parlare poco o tanto, della vera Madre dell'Uomo Dio, se non sulla scia della Rivelazione? Tanto più se si pensa che il Padre l'ha predestinata ad essere vergine, il Figlio la elesse come madre e lo Spirito Santo predispose che fosse dimora di ogni grazia. E io, piccolo uomo, con quali parole potrò esprimere i sentimenti di questo cuore di Vergine, già espressi dalla bocca di Dio, se non basta neppure la lingua di un angelo per descriverli? Il Signore disse: «L'uomo leale fa uscire il bene dallo scrigno del proprio cuore». Ed anche questa frase può essere un v ero tesoro. E chi può pensare che sia più adatto a parlare del cuore della Vergine, se non la stessa Vergine, quella che meritò di diventare Madre di Dio e che ospitò lo stesso Dio nel suo cuore e nel suo seno per nove mesi? E quale tesoro più adatto che lo stesso amore divino, di cui era infiammato, come fornace, il cuore della Vergine?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Mi elevai come il cedro sul Libano e come il cipresso sul monte Sion: come mirra squisita
* ho emanato soave profumo.

Da questo cuore, come da una fornace di amore divino, la Vergine fece scaturire parole buone, cioè parole infiammate d'amore. Come da un'anfora colma di vino pregiato non può traboccare che vino pregiato; e come da un forno incandescente non può sprigionarsi che calore altissimo, così dalla Madre di Cristo non poté uscire nessuna parola che non fosse piena dell'amore e dell'ardore divino. La donna saggia che è una vera signora, usa pronunciare parole misurate, belle e sensate: perciò si legge che la benedetta Madre di Cristo pronunciò in sette diverse riprese, quasi sette parole ricolme di significato e di efficacia: ciò significa anche che ella era riempita dei sette doni dello Spirito Santo. Parlò due volte con l'angelo, due con Elisabetta, due con suo Figlio (una nel tempio e l'altra durante le nozze), una volta con i servitori. E in queste diverse occasioni parlò sempre moderatamente: si deve eccettuare il caso in cui lodò e ringraziò Iddio, quando prolungò il suo discorso dicendo: «L'anima mia magnifica il Signore». In questo caso parlò non con uomini ma con Dio. Queste sette parole furono pronunciate secondo un ordine e una sequenza che facevano vedere i sette modi di procedere e di agire dell'amore. Erano come sette fiamme del suo cuore ardente.

Il culto liturgico con cui viene dato al cuore immacolato di Maria vergine il debito onore e a cui molti santi uomini e donne prepararono la via, dalla stessa sede Apostolica fu approvato la prima volta agli inizi del secolo decimonono, quando papa Pio VII istituì la festa del cuore immacolato della Vergine, da celebrarsi piamente e santamente da quelle diocesi e famiglie religiose che ne avessero fatto domanda; poi Pio IX vi aggiunse l'ufficio e la messa propria. In seguito il sommo pontefice Pio XII, accogliendo benignamente lo zelo ardente e il desiderio, sorto già nel secolo decimosettimo e in crescente sviluppo, di ottenere che simile festa fosse celebrata con maggiore solennità e fosse resa comune in tutta la Chiesa, nel 1942, quando una guerra atrocissima dilagava in tutto il mondo, avendo compassione delle infinite miserie dei popoli, per la sua pietà e fiducia nella Madre celeste, consacrò in forma solenne il genere umano al benignissimo cuore di lei e stabilì che fosse celebrata per sempre e dovunque la festa in onore del suo cuore immacolato con la messa e l'ufficio proprio.

Sulle sette parole di Cristo in Croce cap. 12
Il dover prendersi cura della vergine Madre, fu per san Giovanni un giogo veramente soave e un lieve incarico, impostogli dal Signore. Chi non avrebbe dimorato più che volentieri insieme con quella Madre, che aveva portato per nove mesi nel proprio seno il Verbo incarnato, e aveva abitato con lui per trent'anni completi? Chi non invidia quel prediletto di Gesù, perché, data l'assenza del Figlio di Dio, ottenne la presenza della Madre di Dio? Però, se non erro, anche noi con le nostre preghiere possiamo ottenere dal Verbo, che è generoso e che s'incarnò per noi e fu crocifisso per nostro amore, la grazia che lui stesso ci dica: «Ecco tua madre» e che indicandoci dica a sua Madre: «Ecco tuo figlio».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

II Signore non è avaro di grazie, purché ci accostiamo al suo trono di grazia con fede e fiducia e non con finto, ma con vero e sincero amore. Egli, che volle che noi fossimo coeredi del regno del Padre, non disdegnerà averci coeredi dell'amore di sua Madre. Neppure la stessa benignissima Vergine sarà aggravata dalla moltitudine dei figli, avendo un cuore grandissimo e un desiderio ardentissimo che nessuno perisca di quelli che il suo Figlio redense con tanto prezioso sangue. Andiamo dunque con fiducia al trono della grazia di Cristo, e supplici e non senza lacrime domandiamo che per ciascuno dica alla sua Madre: «Ecco tuo figlio»; e a ciascuno di noi: «Ecco tua madre».

Commemorazione: Ss. Timoteo, Ippolito e Simforiano Mart.
Timoteo, d'Antiochia, venuto a Roma sotto il sommo Pontefice Melchiade, dopo avervi predicato per un anno la fede di Cristo, Tarquinio, prefetto della Città, lo fece mettere ai ferri; e, dopo lunghe sofferenze nella prigione, fu condotto davanti agl'idoli perché sacrificasse. Ma respingendo egli col massimo ardire questa empietà, è battuto crudelissimamente, e sul suo corpo scarnificato si spande della calce viva. In questi e in altri supplizi il Martire essendo rimasto sempre fermo, venne decapitato. Il suo corpo fu sepolto sulla via Ostiense presso il sepolcro del beato Paolo Apostolo. Lo stesso giorno, sotto l'imperatore Alessandro, presso Ostia Tiberina, Ippolito, vescovo di Porto, per aver confessato gloriosamente la fede, legato mani e piedi, fu gettato in una fossa profonda ripiena d'acqua, ricevendo così la corona del martirio, ed i Cristiani lo seppellirono lì stesso. Parimente il medesimo giorno, sotto l'imperatore Aureliano, ad Autun, Sinforiano, ancor adolescente, fu torturato in diverse maniere per la stessa fede. E mentr'era condotto all'estremo supplizio, udendo la madre che gli gridava: «Figlio, Aglio, ricordati della vita eterna, alza gli occhi al cielo, e guarda chi vi regna; non ti si toglie la vita, ma ti si cambia in meglio», porse coraggiosamente il collo al carnefice per la causa di Cristo.

What man, unless secure in a divine oracle, may presume to speak with impure, indeed with polluted lips, anything little or great about the true Parent of God and of man, whom the Father before all ages predestined a perpetual Virgin, whom the Son chose as his most worthy Mother, whom the Holy Ghost prepared as the dwelling place of every grace? With what words shall I, a lowly man, give expression to the highest sentiments of the virginal Heart uttered by the holiest mouth, for which the tongues of all the Angels do not suffice? For the Lord saith: A good man bringeth forth good things from the good treasure of his heart; and this word can also be a treasure. Among pure mortals who can be conceived of as better than she who was worthy to be the Mother of God, who for nine months had as a guest in her heart and in her womb God himself? What better treasure than the divine love itself, which was burning in the Heart of the Virgin as in a furnace?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

And so, from this Heart as from a furnace of divine ardor the Blessed Virgin brought forth good words, that is, words of the most ardent charity. For as from a vessel full of the richest and best wine only good wine can be poured; or as from a furnace of intense heat only a burning fire is emítted; so indeed from the Mother of Christ no word can go forth except of the greatest and most intense divine love and ardor. It is also the mark of a wise woman and matron to speak few words, but words that are effective and full of meaning; and so seven times, as it were, seven words of such wonderful meaning and virtue are read as having been uttered by the Most Blessed Mother of Christ, that mystically it may be shown she was full of the sevenfold grace. To the Angel twice only did she speak; to Elizabeth also twice; with her Son likewise twice, once in the temple, and a second time at the marriage feast; and once to the attendants. And on all those occasions she always said very little; with this one exception that she spake at length in the praise of God and in thanksgiving, namely, when she said: My soul doth magnify the Lord. But here she did not speak with man, but with God. Those seven words were spoken in a wonderful degree and order according to the seven courses and acts of love; as if they were seven flames from the furnace of her Heart.

The liturgical worship, through which due honor is given to the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, and for which many holy men and women have prepared the way, the Apostolic See itself first approved in the beginning of the nineteenth century, when Pope Pius VII instituted the feast of the Most Pure Heart of the Virgin Mary, to be piously and reverently celebrated by all the dioceses and religious families who had asked for it. Afterwards Pope Pius IX added an Office and a proper Mass to it. But an ardent desire and longing, which had arisen in the seventeenth century, grew day by day, that namely, the same Feast, given greater solemnity, might be spread to the entire Church. In 1942, Pope Pius XII, graciously acceding to this wish, and during the terrible war then ravaging almost the entire world, pitying the infinite hardships of men, and because of his devotion and confidence in our heavenly Mother, in solemn supplication earnestly entrusted the entire human race to her most generous Heart, and in honor of the same Immaculate Heart he ordered a Feast to be kept forever with its proper Office and Mass.

The burden and yoke which our Lord imposed on St. John, that he take care of his Virgin Mother, was indeed a sweet yoke and a light burden. Who indeed would not esteem it a happiness to dwell under the same roof with her, who for nine months had borne in her womb the Incarnate Word, and for thirty years had enjoyed the sweetest and happiest communication of sentiments with him? Who doth not envy the chosen disciple of our Lord, who in the absence of the Son of God, was given the presence of the Mother of God? yet, if I am not mistaken, we can obtain by our prayers that our most kind Lord, who became man for our sakes and was crucified for love of us, should say to us: Behold thy Mother; and should say to his Mother for each one of us: Behold thy son.

Commemoration of: Sts. Timothy, Hippolytus and Symphorianus, Martyrs
Timothy came from Antioch to Rome in the time of Pope Melchiades. He had preached the faith of Christ there for a year, when he was thrown into irons by Tarquinius, Praefect of the city. After suffering a long imprisonment he was brought to the idols to offer them sacrifice. He refused right boldly to commit this great sin, and was thereupon savagely scourged, and his raw body covered with quick-lime. He steadily persisted in his testimony under these and other tortures, and at last was beheaded, in the year 311. His body is buried upon the road to Ostia, hard by the sepulchre of the blessed Apostle Paul. On the same day, under the Emperor Alexander, and at Ostia, Hippolytus, Bishop of Porto, on account of his illustrious confession of the faith, had his hands and feet bound, and was thrown into a deep pit full of water, and so received the crown of his testimony. The Christians buried him there. Also on the same day, ~in the year 180, under the Emperor Aurelian, and at Autun, the young lad Symphorian was tortured in diverse ways for professing the same faith. As he was being led to die, he heard his mother crying out to him My child, my child think of life eternal Look to heaven and to Him That reigneth there! thy life is not being taken away, but changed for a better. And so, for Jesus Christ's sake, he bravely offered his neck to the executioner.
