Formati per la luce della verità, non vi sollevano mai gli occhi dell'anima; mai un desiderio, uno slancio verso la contemplazione dell'eterna patria; ma abbandonandosi ai godimenti in cui si sono gettati, amano, come lor patria, un triste luogo di esilio, e in mezzo alle tenebre che impediscono loro di vedere, sono lieti come se fossero illuminati da splendida luce.

Libro 2 questioni sul Vang., cap. 40
Riguardo ai dieci lebbrosi, che il Signore guarì dicendo: «Andate a mostrarvi ai sacerdoti» si può domandare, perché li mandò ai sacerdoti, e volle che fossero guariti mentre vi andavano. Poiché, ad eccezione dei lebbrosi, non si trova ch'egli abbia mai inviato ai sacerdoti alcuno di quanti gli devono la guarigione corporale. Perché pure dalla lebbra aveva egli mondato colui al quale disse: «Va a mostrarti a' sacerdoti e offri per te il sacrificio prescritto da Mosè in testimonianza per essi». Bisogna dunque cercare, che cosa significhi questa lebbra: perché coloro che ne furono liberati, non si dicono guariti, ma mondati. Difatti essa altera il colore della pelle, senza togliere ordinariamente la sanità o l'integrità del sensi e delle membra.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Non è dunque assurdo vedere nei lebbrosi la figura di quelli che, non avendo la scienza della vera fede, professano le diverse dottrine dell'errore. Poiché essi non nascondono la loro ignoranza, ma la mostrano alla luce come una scienza superiore, e l'ostentano con discorsi pieni di iattanza. Ora non c'è falsa dottrina che non abbia mescolata insieme qualche verità. Queste verità mescolate senza ordine agli errori della stessa argomentazione o narrazione di qualcuno, come apparenze diverse nella colorazione d'un sol corpo, richiamano la lebbra che macchia inegualmente i corpi umani, spargendo di macchie malsane il colore naturale (della pelle).

Queste specie di lebbrosi la Chiesa deve tenerli in disparte, affinché, se si può, essi si mettano, vedendosi respinti lontano da lei, a chiamare con gran voce il Cristo, come «i dieci lebbrosi che tenendosi a distanza alzarono la voce dicendo: Gesù maestro, abbi pietà di noi» Luc. 17,13. Chiamandolo essi «maestro», e non so se alcuno di quelli che hanno domandato al Signore la guarigione corporale gli abbia dato questo nome, penso aver mostrato abbastanza la lebbra essere la figura della falsa dottrina, che il buon maestro distrugge istruendoci.

The ten lepers “lifted up their voices and said: Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when He saw them, He said unto them: Go, show yourselves unto the Priests. And it came to pass that, as they went, they were cleansed.” Question: why did the Lord send them unto the Priests, that, as they went, they might be cleansed? Lepers were the only class among those upon whose bodies He worked mercy, whom we find that He sent unto the Priests. It is written in another place that He said to a leper whom He had cleansed: “Go, and show thyself to the Priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them” Luke v. 14, Lev. xiv. seq. We ask then, of what leprosy was a type, whereof they that were ridded were called, not “healed,” but “cleansed.” It is a disease which doth first appear in the skin, but destroyeth not immediately the strength, nor the use of feeling and the limbs.

The lepers, therefore, we may not absurdly suppose such to be figured as have not the knowledge of the true faith, but do show forth diverse-coloured teachings of error. They hide not their witlessness, but do use all such wit as they have to make it manifest, and proclaim it in high-sounding phrases. There is no false doctrine but hath some truth mixed up with it. A man's discourse then, with some truths in it unequally mingled with falsehoods, and all confounded in one mass, is like to the body of one that is stricken with leprosy, whereon all manner of foul colours do appear in this and that place along with the true colour of skin.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 24 Agosto, Luna 11

San Bartoloméo Apostolo, che predicò nell'India il Vangelo di Cristo; recatosi quindi nell'Armènia maggiore, avendo convertito moltissimi alla fede, fu dai barbari scorticato vivo, e, per ordine del Re Astiàge, colla decapitazione compì il martirio. Il suo sacro corpo fu trasferito prima nell'isola di Lipari, quindi a Benevénto, e finalmente a Roma nell'isola Tiberina, dove è onorato dalla pia venerazione dei fedeli.
A Lima, nel Perù, il natale di santa Rosa di santa Maria, Vergine, del Terz'Ordine di san Doménico. La sua festa si celebra il trenta di questo mese.
A Nepi san Tolomèo Vescovo, discepolo del beato Piètre Apostolo, che, mandato da lui nella Toscàna a predicare il Vangelo, morì in quella città glorioso Martire di Cristo.
Nello stesso giorno sant'Eutichio, discepolo del beato Giovànni Evangelista. Dopo aver sopportato per la predicazione del Vangelo in molte regioni il carcere, le battiture ed il fuoco, finalmente si riposò in pace.
A Nepi san Romàno, Vescovo di quella città, il quale, essendo discepolo di san Tolomèo, fu anche suo compagno nella passione.
A Cartàgine trecento santi Martiri, al tempo di Valeriàno e Gallièno. Questi Martiri magnanimi, fra gli altri tormenti, avendo il Preside fatto accendere una fornace di calce, e, alla sua presenza, fatto portare incenso e brage, e avendo detto loro: « Scegliete l'uno dei due, o offrite a Giòve l'incenso sopra questi carboni, o sarete gettati nella calce », armati di fede, confessando Cristo Figlio di Dio, con velocissimo slancio si gettarono nel fuoco, e fra i vapori della calce furono ridotti in polvere; e perciò quel candidato esercito di beati meritò di essere chiamato Massa candida.
In Isàuria san Taziòne Martire, il quale nella persecuzione di Diocleziàno, sotto il Preside Urbàno, percosso colla spada, ricevette la corona del martirio.
Così pure san Giòrgio Limnióta, Monaco, il quale, avendo rimproverato l'empio Imperatore Leóne, perchè distruggeva le sacre immagini e bruciava le reliquie dei Santi, gli furono, per suo comando, tagliate le mani ed abbruciato il capo, e così Martire passò al Signore.
Presso Ostia sant'Aurea, Vergine e Martire, la quale con una pietra legata al collo fu sommersa nel mare. Il suo corpo, rigettato sulla spiaggia, fu sepolto dal beato Nonno.

Martyrology {anticipated}
August 24th 2026, the 11th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The holy Apostle Bartholomew. He preached the Gospel of Christ in India, whence he went into the greater Armenia, where, when he had turned many to the faith, he was flayed alive by the barbarians, and beheaded by order of King Astyages, [about the year of our Lord 71,] and so finished his testimony. His sacred body was first taken to the island of Lipari, then to Benevento, and lastly to Rome, to the island in the Tiber, where it is devoutly reverenced by the veneration of the faithful.
At Carthage, three hundred holy martyrs, in the time of the Emperors Valerian and Gallienus, among other torments applied to them the President caused a limekiln to be lighted, and producing some hot embers and incense said to them, now choose one of two things, either offer this incense to Jupiter upon these coals, or be thrown into that lime. Then they, being armed with faith, and confessing that Christ is the Son of God, threw themselves in a twinkling into the kiln, where they were burnt to powder among the lime, whence this white-robed army of the blessed has gained the name of the White Lump.
At Nepi, [in the first century,] the holy Bishop Ptolemy, a disciple of the blessed Apostle Peter, by whom he was sent into Tuscany to preach the Gospel, and in that city fell a glorious martyr of Christ and in the same place holy Romanus, Bishop of the same city, who, as he had been the disciple of holy Ptolemy was also his comrade in his last testimony and sufferings.
At Ostia, [in the year 230,] the holy Virgin and martyr Aurea, who was cast into the sea with a stone tied about her neck. Her body was washed up upon the shore, and was buried by blessed Nonnus.
In Isauria, [about the year 304,] the holy martyr Tation, who was slain with the sword under President Urban, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian, and so received the crown of martyrdom.
On the same day, [at the end of the first or beginning of the second century,] holy Eutychius, a disciple of the blessed Evangelist John. For preaching the Gospel he suffered in many countries imprisonment, stripes, and fire but at length fell asleep in peace.
Also, [in the eighth century,] the holy monk George, surnamed Limniotes. He rebuked the wicked Emperor Leo for breaking the holy images and burning the relics of the Saints, whereupon the Emperor commanded his hands to be cut off, and his head to be set on fire, and so as a martyr he passed away to be ever with the Lord.
