Libro 3 dopo il principio.
Siccome la memoria del beato Giovanni Battista non si deve sfiorare leggermente, perciò dobbiamo considerare chi egli era, e da chi, e per qual ragione, e in qual momento fu ucciso. L'ucciso è un giusto e (viene ucciso) da adulteri, e la pena capitale che meritano essi, la fan subire al loro giudice. E poi la morte d'un Profeta diviene la ricompensa d'una ballerina. Infine (cosa che perfino tutti i barbari hanno comunemente in orrore), a tavola, in mezzo a un banchetto si pronunzia la sentenza crudele da eseguirsi; e si porta l'esecuzione del crudele misfatto dal banchetto alla prigione, dalla prigione al banchetto. Quanti delitti in una sola Azione!
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Al vedere un emissario correre dal banchetto alla prigione, chi non avrebbe creduto alla scarcerazione del Profeta? Chi, dico, nell'apprendere che era il giorno della nascita d'Erode, che c'era gran convito, che s'era data alla fanciulla libertà di chiedere quel che volesse, non avrebbe pensato che si mandava a liberare Giovanni? Che relazione fra la crudeltà e le delizie? fra l'assassinio e la voluttà? Il Profeta subisce la pena durante un convito, per una sentenza emanata in un convito, e ch'egli avrebbe; respinta anche se l'avesse rimesso in libertà: gli si tronca la testa, e la si porta in un bacile. Cibo siffatto ci voleva alla crudeltà, e poteva soddisfare una ferocia difficile a saziarsi.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi conobbe la giustizia, e vide grandi meraviglie, e pregò molto l'Altissimo :

E poiché la fame non poté esser saziata dalle vivande, la sete della tua inaudita crudeltà non poté essere estinta dalle bevande, su bevi il sangue ancor caldo che sgorga dalle vene della testa che hai fatto troncare. Guarda questi occhi fin nella stessa morte testimoni del tuo crimine, e che rifuggono dal contemplare i tuoi piaceri. Questi occhi si chiudono non tanto per la morte, quanto per l'orrore delle tue lascivie. Questa bocca eloquente, i cui rimproveri non potevi soffrire, benché pallida e muta, ti fa ancor tremare.

Sermone 10 fra gli ultimi Sermoni
La lettura del santo Vangelo ci ha messo sotto gli occhi uno spettacolo crudele: la testa di san Giovanni in un bacile, invio lugubre della crudeltà in odio della verità. Una fanciulla balla, e la madre sazia il suo furore; e, fra le lascivie e le delizie d'un convito si giura temerariamente, e l'empio giuramento si eseguisce. Così si compie in Giovanni quanto egli stesso aveva predetto; che parlando di Gesù Cristo Signore aveva detto: «Bisogna ch'egli cresca, e che io diminuisca» Gv. 3,30. Egli diminuì con l'essere decapitato, Gesù crebbe con l'essere crocifisso. La verità ha partorito l'odio. Non si poterono tollerare con animo tranquillo gli avvertimenti del sant'uomo di Dio; il quale certo cercava la salvezza di coloro che in tal guisa ammoniva. Ed essi gli resero male per bene.

Diceva al re: «Non t'è lecito di tenere la moglie di tuo fratello» Mc.6.18. Ma il re era schiavo della passione: e illegittimamente teneva presso di sé la moglie di suo fratello. Tuttavia la stima che aveva di Giovanni gli impediva d'incrudelire contro di lui: l'onorava, perché gli faceva sentire la verità. Ma una detestabile donna ne aveva concepito un odio segreto, che al dato momento doveva metter fuori. E quando lo mise fuori, lo fece per mezzo della figlia, una figlia ballerina.

Commemorazione: S. Sabina Martyre
Sabina, dama Romana, moglie del nobil uomo Valentino, istruita nei precetti della fede cristiana dalla vergine Serafia, dopo il martirio della santa Vergine, ne raccolse le reliquie e le seppellì con onore. Perciò arrestata anche lei poco dopo, sotto l'imperatore Adriano, è fatta comparire davanti al giudice Elpidio. Alla quale questi: Sei tu la Sabina nobilissima per nascita e per matrimonio? Ed ella: Sono io, risponde: ma ringrazio il Signor mio Gesù Cristo, che m'ha liberata, per intercessione della sua serva Serafia, dal potere dei demoni. Il prefetto dopo averla tentata in vari modi per farle cambiar parere, non potendo riuscire a smuoverla dal persistere nella fede, la condannò alla pena capitale per aver disprezzato gli dèi. Il suo corpo fu sepolto dai Cristiani nella medesima tomba in cui ella aveva riposto Serafla, sua maestra nella fede.

We must not hurry by the record of the Blessed Baptist John. We must ask what he was, and by whom, and why, and how, and when he was slain. He was a righteous man murdered by adulterers. The guilty passed upon their judge the sentence of death. Moreover, the death of the Prophet was the fee of a dancing-girl. And lastly, there was a feature about it from which even savages shrink; the order for completing the atrocity was given amid the merriment of a dinner-party. From banquet to prison, from prison to banquet, that was the course run by the servants of the murderer. How many horrors does this simple crime embrace within its details?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The righteous shall grow as the lily
* Yea, he shall flourish in the presence of the Lord for ever.

Who is there, that, on seeing the messenger hasten from the dinner-table to the prison, would not have forthwith concluded that he carried an order for the Prophet's release. If any one had heard that it was Herod's birth-day, and that he was giving a great feast, and that he had offered a damsel the choice of whatever she listed, and that thereupon a messenger had been sent to John's dungeon. If any one, I say, had heard this, what would he have supposed? He would have concluded that the damsel had asked and obtained John's freedom. What have executions in common with dinners, or death with gaiety? While the banquet was going on, the Prophet was hurried to death, by an order from the reveller whom he had not troubled even by a prayer for release. He was slain with the sword, and his head was served up in a plate. This was the new dish demanded by a cruelty which the Feast had been powerless to glut.

℟. This is he which knew righteousness, and saw great wonders, and made his prayer unto the Most High

Look, savage King, look at a decoration which suiteth well with thy banquet. Put out thine hand, so as to lose no part of the luxury of cruelty, and let the streams of the sacred blood run between thy fingers. Thine hunger the dinner hath been unable to satisfy, thy cups have not been able to quench thine inhuman thirst. Suck, suck the blood which the still palpitating veins are discharging from the place where the neck has been severed. Look at the eyes. Even in death they remain the eyes of a witness of thine uncleanness, but they are closing themselves upon the spectacle of thy pleasures. Those eyes indeed are shutting but it seems not so much from the laws of natural death, as from horror at the scene of thine enjoyment. The golden mouth, whose bloodless lips are silent now, can repeat no more the denunciation which thou couldest not bear to hear, and still thou art afraid of it.

The reading of the Holy Gospel hath set a scene of cruelty before our eyes even the head of St. John in a charger; a message of death sent forth to discharge the bloody commands of one that hateth the truth; a damsel dancing, and a mother rabid; a rash oath sworn in the midst of uncleanness and the revels of a supper, and a wicked fulfillment of the oath so sworn. It befell unto John according to his own saying. For he had said concerning the Lord Jesus Christ: He must increase, but I must decrease John iii. 30, so John decreased by an head, and Christ's height was made higher upon the Cross. The truth drew hatred. It could not be borne in patience that the holy man of God should utter a rebuke, albeit he sought by his rebuke nothing but the soul's health of them to whom he addressed it. They repaid him evil for good.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Lord, Thou hast given him his heart's desire.

Egli, dopo il tormento dell'eculeo, condannato a morte, mentre era condotto ad essere decapitato, s'incontrò con un Cristiano, che, spontaneamente confessando di essere tale, fu subito egualmente decapitato con lui; i Cristiani poi, ignorando il suo nome, lo chiamarono Adàutto, perchè si unì a san Felice per la corona.
Così pure a Roma santa Gaudènzia, Vergine e Martire, con altre tre.
A Colònia Suffetulàna, in Africa, sessanta beati Martiri, uccisi dal furore dei pagani.

Upon the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Virgin Rose of St. Mary, whose birth into the better life (in the year 1617) is mentioned upon the 26th day of this present month.
