Narrandoci poi le gesta dei Santi, essa eccita i nostri cuori infermi alla loro imitazione; e col racconto delle loro illustri azioni, fortifica la nostra debolezza contro gli assalti dei vizi: e così avviene che l'anima nostra tanto meno tremi nei suoi combattimenti, quanto più si vede posti dinanzi, nelle sue pagine, trionfi di tanti uomini forti.

Ora la Gentilità, avendo perduta la conoscenza del suo Creatore, si trovava immersa nei vizi. Dicendoci dunque dove abitava, si vuol far comprendere ridondare a sua maggior lode l'essersi conservato buono in mezzo ai cattivi. Perché non c'è poi gran merito l'essere buono tra i buoni, ma sì l'essere buono tra i cattivi. E come è maggior colpa non essere buono coi buoni; così non c'è maggior gloria che mantenersi buono anche tra i cattivi.

Omelia di sant'Agostino Vescovo
Libro 2 del Sermone del Signore sul monte c. 14
«Nessuno può servire a due padroni» Matth. 6,24. A questa stessa intenzione si riferisce ciò ch'egli espone di conseguenza, dicendo: «Perché o odierà l'uno e amerà l'altro; o s'affezionerà all'uno e disprezzerà l'altro» Matth. 6,24. Bisogna considerare attentamente queste parole: perché egli stesso indica poi quali siano questi due padroni aggiungendo: «Non potete servire a Dio e a mammona» (Ibi). Dicono che gli Ebrei chiamano le ricchezze mammona. Anche nella lingua Cartaginese questa parola ha lo stesso senso; perché mammona in Cartaginese significa guadagno.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Chi mi darà che tu mi protegga nell'inferno e mi nasconda, finché passi il tuo furore, o Signore, se non tu, che solo sei Dio?

Ma servire a mammona è essere schiavo di colui che la sua perversità ha preposto alle cose terrene, e che il Signore chiama «principe di questo mondo» (Joann. 13,31. Dunque «o l'uomo odierà l'uno, e amerà l'altro», cioè Dio; «o s'affezionerà all'uno, e disprezzerà l'altro» Metth. 6,24. Difatti chi è schiavo di mammona, s'affeziona a un padrone duro e pernicioso; perché schiavo della sua cupidigia, subisce la tirannia del diavolo e, certo, non lo ama punto. Perché chi può amare il diavolo? ma tuttavia lo sopporta.

And so by the words of the Scripture it cometh to pass that the soul trembleth less at the battle, for that she seeth how many times the enemies before her have been beaten by brave men.

“No man can serve two masters,” and this is further explained “for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.” These words we ought carefully to weigh, for the Lord showeth straightway who be the two masters whom we have choice of: “Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.” Mammon is a term which the Hebrews are said to use for riches. It is also a Carthaginian word for the Punic for “gain” is “mammon.”

San Raimondo Nonnàto, dell'Ordine della beata Maria della Mercéde per la redenzione degli schiavi. Cardinale e Confessore; il cui giorno natalizio è ricordato il ventisei di questo mese.
Presso il monte Senàrio, in Toscàna, il natale di san Bonagiùnta Confessore, uno dei sette Fondatori dell'Ordine dei Servi della beata Vergine Maria; il quale, mentre parlava ai Confratelli sulla passione di Cristo, rese lo spirito nelle mani del Signore. La sua festa e quella dei suoi Compagni si celebra il dodici Febbraio.
Così pure a Trèviri il natale di san Paolino Vescovo, il quale, al tempo della persecuzione Ariana, per la fede cattolica dall'Ariano Imperatore Costanzo fu relegato in esilio fuori dei confini del Cristianesimo, e finalmente, morto nella Frigia, ricevette dal Signore la corona della sua beata passione.
Così pure a Trasàcco, al lago Fucino, nei Marsi, il natale dei santi Martiri Cesidio Prete e Compagni, i quali nella persecuzione di Massimino furono coronati col martirio.

In England, [in the year 651,] holy Aidan, Bishop of Lindisfarne. Holy Cuthbert, who was then a shepherd lad, saw the soul of Aidan carried up into heaven, and he thereupon left his sheep and became a monk.

At Trier, [in the year 358,] holy Paulinus, Bishop [of that see.] In the time of the persecution under the Arians he was exiled by Constantius the Arian Emperor on account of his Catholic belief, and when he had been wearied out by changing the places of his exile, even beyond the bounds of Christendom, he at length died in Phrygia, and received a crown from the Lord in reward of his blessed sufferings.
