Raimondo, soprannominato Nonnato perché contrariamente alle leggi ordinarie della natura, venne alla luce dopo la morte della madre mediante operazione cesarea, nato a Portel nella Catalogna da pii genitori, fin dall'infanzia diede indizi della futura santità. Infatti, insensibile ai divertimenti dei fanciulli e alle attrattive del mondo, si diede talmente alla pietà, che tutti ammiravano in lui fanciullo una virtù già matura. Crescendo nell'età, si applicò allo studio delle lettere; ma bentosto, per ordine del padre, si ritirò in campagna, dove visitava spesso la cappella di san Nicola, situata nei dintorni di Portel, per venerarvi una sacra immagine della Madre di Dio tuttora in grandissima venerazione presso i fedeli. Là effondendosi in preghiere, supplicava incessantemente la madre di Dio, che si degnasse di adottarlo per figlio e d'insegnargli la via della salvezza e la scienza dei Santi.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

La Vergine clementissima non respinse le sue domande. E da lei egli intese che le farebbe cosa gratissima, se entrasse nell'ordine della Mercede per la redenzione degli schiavi fondata di fresco per sua ispirazione. Ricevuto questo avviso, si recò subito a Barcellona ad abbracciarvi questo istituto votato a sì eccellente opera di carità verso il prossimo. Arruolatosi così nella santa milizia, conservò sempre la verginità, che già aveva consacrato alla beata Vergine, e si segnalò pure nelle altre virtù e soprattutto nella carità verso i Cristiani, che, caduti in potere dei pagani, trascinavano una vita miserabile nella schiavitù. Inviato in Africa per riscattarli, dopo averne liberati molti dalla schiavitù, avendo consumate le risorse, diede se stesso in ostaggio per non lasciare gli altri, che rimanevano, correre il rischio d'apostatare. Ma siccome, infiammato di zelo ardentissimo per la salvezza delle anime, convertiva a Cristo colle sue prediche molti Maomettani, i barbari lo gettarono in un angusto carcere e lo sottoposero a vari supplizi, poi forategli le labbra e chiusele con un lucchetto di ferro, gli fecero soffrire un lungo e crudele martirio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,

Lettura 6
Queste cose ed altre azioni coraggiose diffusero la fama della sua santità dappertutto. Quindi Gregorio IX chiamò Raimondo a far parte del sacro collegio dei cardinali di santa Romana Chiesa. Ma l'uomo di Dio, aborrente da ogni pompa, in questa dignità praticò sempre strettamente l'umiltà religiosa. Partito per Roma, appena giunto a Cardona, cadde gravissimamente malato, e domandò istantissimamente di ricevere i Sacramenti della Chiesa. Aggravandosi il male e il sacerdote tardando a venire, egli ricevé il santo Viatico per ministero di Angeli apparsigli sotto l'aspetto di religiosi del suo ordine. Ricevutolo e ringraziatone Dio, se ne andò al Signore l'ultima Domenica di Agosto del 1241. Essendo sorta discussione circa il luogo della sua sepoltura, il suo corpo, rinchiuso in una cassa, fu posto su d'una mula cieca, che lo portò, non senza disposizione di Dio, alla cappella di san Nicola, perché fosse seppellito là dove aveva gettato i primi fondamenti della sua vita santissima. E là, costruttovi un convento del suo ordine, è onorato dai popoli fedeli che vi affluiscono da ogni parte della Catalogna per sciogliervi i loro voti, ed egli manifesta la sua gloria con ogni sorta di miracoli e prodigi.

Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Lettura 8
Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Ma anche se si osservano i due comandamenti, rimane il dovere, per chiunque si tratti, di tendere con la speranza alla patria superna e di non star lontano in alcun modo dai vizi soltanto per l'onore di questo mondo.

«E voi siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni dalle nozze, per aprirgli subito appena giungerà e picchierà alla porta». Il Signore in verità viene quando si affretta al giudizio; picchia poi quando, con gli affanni della malattia, ci avverte che ormai la morte è vicina. Noi gli apriamo subito, se lo riceviamo con amore. Non vuole infatti aprire al giudice che picchia, colui che ha paura di uscire dal corpo e ha timore di vedere questo giudice, che ricorda di aver disprezzato. Ma chi è tranquillo per la sua speranza e per il suo modo di agire, apre subito a chi picchia, perché accoglie con gioia il giudice; e, quando è vicino il tempo della morte, egli si rallegra pensando ad una gloriosa retribuzione.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Reading 4
This Raymond is commonly called the Unborn, because his was one of the rare cases in which the child is not brought into the world in the course of nature, but by a surgical operation after the death of the mother. He was the son of godly and noble parents, at Portel, (in the dioecese of Urgel,) in Catalonia. The tokens of his holy after-life appeared even in his childhood. The things that delight children, and the attractions of the world, had no charm for him. He was so earnest in godliness that all men marvelled at his habits of premature old age. As he grew older, he gave himself to the study of letters, but, at the command of his father, turned to farming. He went often to the Chapel of St Nicolas, in the suburbs of Portel, to visit the sacred image of the Mother of God, which is still sought with great tenderness by the faithful. And the most gracious Maiden was not deaf to his prayers. From her he understood that it would please her right well, if he would join the Religious Order which had just been founded at her own inspiration, styled of Ransom or of Mercy, for buying up and freeing slaves. As soon as he had received this intimation from her, he went to Barcelona, and entered the Institute so nobly dedicated to love for our neighbour. Once enlisted in the Regular Army, he guarded unspotted for ever the virginity which he had already consecrated to the Blessed Virgin for ever. But he was a bright and shining light of all other good words and works, especially of tender compassion for Christians who were passing a life of grievous bondage in the possession of unbelieving masters. To free such he was sent into Africa, and delivered many. But his money ran short, and as there were still many in imminent danger of denying the faith, he pawned himself. He was enkindled with a most vehement longing for the salvation of souls, and by his exhortations brought diverse Mohammedans to Christ. The Moors therefore threw him into close prison, and put him to diverse tortures, at last making holes through his lips and locking them together with an iron padlock, which horrid cruelty he long bore.

Reading 6
The account of these, and other brave things that he did, he got the name of a Saint far and wide. Gregory IX. was moved thereby to make Raymond a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, but in this place of honour the man of God shrank from all outward show, and clung ever tightly to the lowliness that beseemeth a Religious man. He had started for Rome, (in obedience to the command of the Pope,) but had only got as far as Cardona, (six miles from Barcelona,) when he was seized with his last illness, and earnestly called for the strengthening Sacraments of the Church. But his position became critical, and the Priest had not arrived. Then Angels came unto him, clad in the habit of his own Order, and ministered unto him the wholesome Provision for the last journey. When he had taken It, he gave God thanks, and departed hence to be ever with the Lord. It was the last Lord's Day in August, 1240. After his death there was some dispute arose as to where his body should be buried so they shut it up in a box, and laid it upon a blind mule, and the beast was guided by God to carry it to the chapel of St. Nicolas, that he might be buried where he had laid the foundations of his nobler life. There was built there a Convent of his Order, and the faithful come together thither from all parts of Catalonia to honour him, and he is famous for diverse signs and wonders.

Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 1 Settembre, Luna 19

Nella provincia di Narbóna sant'Egidio, Abate e Confessore. Col suo nome venne chiamata la città che poi sorse nel luogo, ove egli aveva eretto un monastero, ed aveva compiuto il corso della sua vita mortale.
A Sentino, nei confini delle Puglie, la passione dei santi Donato e l'altro Felice, figli dei santi Bonifacio e Tecla. Dal Giudice Valeriàno, ai tempi dell'Imperatore Massimiano, dopo vari tormenti furono fatti decapitare in questo giorno in cui si celebra la festa anche degli altri dieci fratelli, il cui natale si commemora nei rispettivi giorni. I corpi degli stessi dodici fratelli furono in seguito trasportati a Benevénto, ed ivi onorevolmente riposti.
In Palestina i santi Giosuè e Gedeóne.
A Gerusalémme la beata Anna Profetessa, della cui santità parla il Vangelo.
A Càpua, sulla via Acquarla, san Prisco Martire, il quale fu uno degli antichi discepoli di Cristo.

30:12 Quelli che mi vedevano fuori fuggivano da me. * Sono messo in oblio, come un morto, dal [loro] cuore.
30:13 Sono divenuto come un vaso spezzato. * Poiché ho udito i vituperi di molti, che mi dimorano intorno.
30:14 Mentre si riunivano contro di me, * e tennero consiglio di togliermi la vita.
30:15 Ma io sperai in te, o Signore: * io dissi: tu sei il mio Dio: nelle tue mani le mie sorti.
30:16 Liberami dalle mani dei miei nemici, * e da coloro che mi perseguitano.
30:17 Fa risplendere la tua faccia sopra il tuo servo, salvami nella tua misericordia. * Che io non resti confuso, o Signore, perché ti ho invocato.
30:18 Siano svergognati gli empi, e condotti all'inferno. * Ammutoliscano le labbra ingannatrici,
30:19 che proferiscono iniquità contro il giusto * con superbia e con disprezzo.

30:20 Quanto è grande l'abbondanza della tua dolcezza, o Signore, * che riponi per coloro che ti temono,
30:20 e dimostri a quelli che sperano in te, * al cospetto dei figli degli uomini.
30:21 Li nasconderai nel segreto della tua faccia * dal tumulto degli uomini.
30:21 Li porrai al sicuro nel tuo tabernacolo * dalla contraddizione delle lingue.
30:22 Benedetto il Signore, * perché ha reso mirabile in me la sua misericordia [mettendomi]in una città fortificata.
30:23 Ma io dissi nell'esagerazione della mia mente: * sono stato rigettato dalla vista dei tuoi occhi.
30:23 Per questo tu hai esaudito la voce della mia supplica, * quando io gridavo a te.
30:24 Amate il Signore, voi tutti suoi santi, * perché la verità, il Signore, ricercherà, e ripagherà con abbondanza a quelli che producono superbia.
30:25 Agite virilmente e si fortifichi il vostro cuore, * voi tutti che sperate nel Signore.
