Eccoci, dilettissimi, al giorno desiderato della beata e venerabile Maria sempre Vergine; perciò si rallegri e gioisca sommamente la nostra terra illustrata dalla nascita di tale Vergine. Ella infatti è il fiore del campo, da cui è uscito il prezioso giglio delle valli, per la cui maternità si è cambiata la sorte dei nostri progenitori e cancellata la loro colpa. Ella non ha punto subita la maledizione pronunziata contro di Eva, cioè: «Nel dolore darai alla luce i tuoi figli» Gen. 3,16; avendo ella dato alla luce il Signore nella gioia.

Eva pianse, Maria esultò: Eva portò nel seno un frutto di lacrime, Maria di gioia, avendo dato alla luce quella un peccatore e questa un innocente. La madre del genere umano introdusse il castigo nel mondo, la Madre di nostro Signore ha portato la salvezza al mondo. Eva è la sorgente del peccato, Maria la sorgente del merito. Eva ci fu funesta dandoci la morte, Maria ci ha fatto del bene rendendoci la vita. Quella ci ha feriti, questa ci ha guariti. La disobbedienza è stata riparata dall'obbedienza, l'incredulità compensata colla fede.

Leggiamo in Isaia: «Chi spiegherà la sua generazione?» Is. 53,8. Non crediamo dunque che l'Evangelista contradica al Profeta, s'egli intraprende a parlare di ciò che questi disse impossibile a spiegarsi: perché l'uno (Isaia) parla della generazione Divina, l'altro (Matteo) dell'incarnazione. Or questi comincia da ciò che riguarda la carne, affinché per l'uomo cominciamo a conoscere Dio. «Figlio di David, figlio d'Abramo» Matth. 1,1. L'ordine è invertito, ma invertito necessariamente. Dacché se avesse posto prima Abramo e poi David, avrebbe dovuto ripetere di nuovo Abramo per la serie genealogica.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Ora egli ha dato Cristo come figlio dei due (patriarchi), senza nominare gli altri, perché a loro particolarmente esso era stato promesso. Ad Abramo così: «Nel tuo seme, dice, saranno benedette tutte le genti» Gen. 22,18 cioè in Cristo. E a David: «Un frutto del tuo seno io porrò sul tuo trono» Ps. 131,11. «Giuda fu padre di Fares e Zaram di Tamar» Matth. 1,3. È da notare che nella genealogia del Salvatore non si fa menzione di nessuna santa donna, ma solo di quelle che la Scrittura giudica riprensibili; e ciò per mostrare che colui che veniva per i peccatori, nascendo da peccatori, avrebbe cancellato i peccati di tutti. Ond'è che nei versetti seguenti sono nominate anche Rut la Moabita e Betsabea moglie di Uria.

Commemorazione: S. Adriani, Martire
Adriano, mentre per ordine dell'imperatore Massimiano perseguitava a Nicomedia i Cristiani, avendo spesso ammirato con che costanza questi confessassero la loro fede e resistessero ai tormenti, stupito sommamente della cosa, si convertì a Cristo. Perciò fu gettato in prigione con altri ventitré Cristiani; dove lo visitò la moglie Natalia, che era già cristiana, infiammandolo al martirio. Pertanto, fatto uscire di prigione, fu flagellato finché gli uscirono gli intestini. In ultimo, spezzategli le gambe, troncategli le mani e i piedi, terminò gloriosamente il combattimento del martirio insieme con molti altri.

Dearly beloved brethren, the day for which we have longed, the Feast-day of the Blessed and Worshipful and Ever-Virgin Mary, that day is come. Let our land laugh and sing with merriment, bathed in the glory of this great Virgin's rising. She is the flower of the fields on which the priceless lily of the valleys hath blossomed. This is she whose delivery changed the nature that we draw from our first parents, and cleansed away their offence. At her that dolorous sentence which was pronounced over Eve ended its course to her it was never said: “In sorrow thou shalt bring forth children.” Gen. iii. 16. She brought forth a Child, even the Lord, but she brought Him forth, not in sorrow, but in joy.

The Book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac, and Isaac begat Jacob. And so on.

In Isaiah liii. 8 we read: “Who shall declare His generation?” Let us not think that there is any contradiction between the Prophet and the Evangelist, because the Prophet saith that this thing cannot be done, and the Evangelist beginneth by doing it. The one speaketh of the generation of the Divine (Word by the Eternal Father,) the other of the (family in which the) Incarnation took place. Matthew beginneth with carnal things, that by learning of men we may go on to learn of God. “The Son of David, the son of Abraham.” The reversal of the order in these clauses is a needful change. If Abraham had been put first and David afterwards, Abraham would have had to be taken again, in order to marshal the pedigree properly.

Matthew first calleth Christ the Son of these twain Abraham and David without making mention of the others, because unto these twain only was promise of Christ made unto Abraham, where it is said: “In thy seed” that is, in Christ “shall all the nations of the earth be blessed,” Gen. xxii. 18 and unto David, in the words “Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.” Ps. cxxxi, 11 “And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar.” It is to be remarked that in the genealogy of the Saviour none of the holy women are named, but those women only are named against whom the Scripture hath to say something amiss. He Who came to save sinners was born of sinners, that He might wash away all sin. Afterwards are named Ruth, who was a Moabitess, and Bathsheba, who had been the wife of Uriah.

Reading 9
And Jacob begat Joseph. Julian Augustus citeth this passage as an example of the lack of harmony among the Evangelists. Matthew the Evangelist saith that Joseph was the son of Jacob; Luke calleth him the son of Eli. But Julian did not understand scriptural custom. One writer may refer to a father according to nature, another to a father according to the law. We know that by God's command Moses laid down a law that should a man die without children his brother or his nearest relative was to marry the widow to raise up seed to the dead man. Joseph was the husband of Mary. When you hear the word husband do not entertain the notion of marriage in the usual sense. In the language of the Scriptures a betrothed pair were often called husband and wife.

A Nicomèdia la passione dei santi Martiri Dorotèo e Gorgònio, i quali, avendo ottenuto grandissimi onori presso Diocleziàno Augusto, e detestando la persecuzione che egli faceva ai Cristiani, alla sua presenza, furono prima fatti sospendere e straziare con flagelli per tutto il corpo; quindi, scoperte le viscere col togliere la pelle, furono fatti cospargere di aceto e sale, e in tal modo arrostire sulla graticola; e finalmente furono fatti strangolare. Dopo qualche tempo il corpo del beato Gorgònio fu portato a Roma, e deposto sulla via Latina, e di là fu poi trasferito alla Basilica di san Piètro.
Nella Sabina, trenta miglia lontano da Roma, i santi Martiri Giacinto, Alessandro e Tibùrzio.
A Sebàste, nell'Arménia, san Severiàno, il quale, essendo soldato dell'Imperatore Licinio, e visitando spesso i Quaranta Martiri detenuti in prigione, per ordine del Preside Lisia, fu appeso con un sasso legato ai piedi, e, battuto con bastoni e lacerato con flagelli, nei tormenti rese lo spirito.
Nello stesso giorno la passione di santo Stratòne, il quale per Cristo fu legato a due alberi e squarciato, e così compì il martirio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
September 9th 2026, the 27th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Nicomedia, the holy martyrs Dorotheus and Gorgonius. They stood high at the Court of the Emperor Diocletian. They denounced in his presence the persecution which he was raising against the Christians, wherefore he caused them to be hung up, and their whole bodies torn with lashes, then to have the skin taken off their bowels, to be covered with vinegar and salt, and cooked upon a gridiron, and at the last strangled. In after times the body of the blessed Gorgonius was brought to Rome, and laid first upon the Latin Way, and afterwards in the Basilica of St Peter.
In the land of the Sabines, at the 30th milestone from the city of Rome, the holy martyrs Hyacinth, Alexander, and Tiburtius.
At Sebaste, under the Emperor Licinius, the holy soldier Severian. He often visited the forty martyrs while they were in prison, whereupon Lysias the President ordered him to be hung up with a stone tied to his feet, and to be beaten and torn with stripes and lashes, under the which torment he gave up the ghost.
On the same day, the holy martyr Straton, who, for Christ's sake, was bound to two trees and torn asunder, and so finished his testimony.
Likewise the holy brethren Rufinus and Rufinian, both martyrs.
At Rome, (in the year 701,) the holy Confessor Pope Sergius I.
In the country of Therouanne, (in the seventh century,) holy Omer, Bishop (of that see.)

At Cartagena, in South America, (in the year 1654,) the holy Confessor Peter Claver, of the Society of Jesus, who toiled for more than forty years among the negro slaves with marvellous self-sacrifice and exceeding love, and of them with his own hand caused nearly three hundred thousand to be born again in Christ. His name was enrolled by the Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII among those of the Saints.
