Nicola, detto da Tolentino a motivo del suo lungo soggiorno in quella città, nacque nel paese di sant'Angelo nel Piceno da pii genitori; i quali, andati a Bari a compiervi un voto col desiderio d'avere dei figli, ed avendovi ricevuta l'assicurazione da san Nicola della nascita di un figlio, imposero al figlio ch'ebbero il nome di esso santo. Fin dall'infanzia il fanciullo diede esempio di molte virtù, ma specialmente d'astinenza. Infatti appena settenne, ad imitazione dello stesso san Nicola, cominciò a digiunare più volte la settimana; e conservò questa abitudine anche in seguito, contentandosi solo di pane ed acqua.

Divenuto adulto e già ascrittosi alla milizia ecclesiastica e provvisto d'un canonicato, assistendo un giorno a una prèdica che un oratore dell'ordine degli Eremiti di sant'Agostino faceva sul disprezzo del mondo, tocco da quella predica entrò subito nel medesimo ordine. Dove coll'esatta osservanza delle regole della vita religiosa, vestendo grossolanamente, domando il corpo con discipline e catene di ferro, e astenendosi dalla carne e quasi da ogni nutrimento, fu modello a tutti di carità, umiltà, pazienza, e di tutte le altre virtù.

Non tralasciò mai d'applicarsi assiduamente alla preghiera, benché vessato da satana con insidie in varie guise fino talvolta ad esserne flagellato. Infine, nei sei mesi prima di morire, udì tutte le notti concerti angelici; la cui soavità facendogli già pregustare le gioie del paradiso, ripeteva spesso le parole dell'Apostolo: «Bramo d'essere sciolto, e di essere con Cristo» Philipp. 1,25. Da ultimo, predisse ai suoi confratelli il giorno della sua morte, che fu il 10 Settembre. Dopo morte fu illustrato da molti miracoli; i quali regolarmente e canonicamente constatati, fu iscritto da Papa Eugenio IV nel novero dei Santi.

Omelia di s. Beda venerabile presbitero
Libro 4, cap. 54, su Luca 12.
Chiama piccolo il gregge degli eletti, o per comparazione del maggior numero dei dannati, o meglio per la devozione dell'umiltà: poiché, sebbene la sua Chiesa sia già estesa con quanta mai numerosità, tuttavia vuole che cresca fino alla fine del mondo in umiltà, e che raggiunga con l'umiltà il regno promesso. Pertanto, dopo aver consolato delicatamente le sue fatiche, colei a cui ha ordinato di cercare soltanto il regno di Dio, alla medesima promette con compiaciuta bontà il regno che verrà donato dal Padre.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ciò allora si fa degnamente, quando uno, una volta disprezzate tutte le sue cose per il Signore, nondimeno dopo di queste con il lavoro delle mani opera sia per avere il vitto sia perché possa dare elemosina. Donde si gloria l'Apostolo, dicendo: «Non ho io desiderato l'argento, e l'oro, le vesti di nessuno: conforme voi sapete che al bisogno mio e di quelli che sono con me servirono queste mani. Reading 4
This Nicholas is called Nicholas of Tolentino, because he lived in that town for most part of his life. He was born at St. Angelo, a place near Fermo, in the March of Ancona, about the year 1245. His parents were godly people, and in their desire to have children, vowed and made a pilgrimage to the shrine of St Nicholas at Bari, where they were assured of their wish, and therefore gave the name of Nicholas to the son whom they received. From his childhood the lad gave many good signs, but especially as regarded abstinence. In his seventh year, in imitation of his blessed name-sake, he began to fast upon several days in the week, which custom he always kept, and was content with only bread and water.

After he reached man's estate, he enlisted himself in the army of the clergy, and was preferred to a Canonry. As a Friar he was most strictly observant of that way of life. He subdued his body with rough clothing, stripes, and an iron chain. He never ate meat, and seldom any relish to his meals. The elect are called a little flock, perchance because the reprobate are far more in number than they, but, more probably, because they love to be lowly, since it is God's will that however much His Church should grow in numbers, she should grow with lowliness even unto the end of the world, and should enter lowly into that kingdom which is hers by His promise. That kingdom He promiseth to her here, when He biddeth her to seek only the kingdom of God, and, to comfort her in her travail, He doth so sweetly and so graciously say that her Father will give it to her.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.

Martyrology {anticipated}
September 11th 2026, the 29th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, upon the old Salarian Way, at the cemetery of Basilla, the holy brethren Protus and Hyacinth, both martyrs. They were eunuchs who belonged to blessed Eugenia.
Under the Emperor Gallienus they were arrested on the charge that they were Christians, and, forasmuch as they could not be made to offer sacrifice, they were first grievously beaten, and then beheaded.
At Laodicea, in Syria, the holy martyrs Diodorus, Diomede, and Didymus.
At Leon, in Spain, (in the middle of the sixth century,) the holy martyr Vincent, Abbot (of the monastery of St Claudius.)
In Egypt, holy Paphnutius, Bishop (in the Thebaid.) He was one of those Confessors who under the Emperor Galerius Maximinus had his right eye put out and his left hough cut, and was condemned to penal servitude in the mines. Under the Emperor Constantine the Great he strove stalwartly for the Catholic faith against the Arians, and at length fell asleep in peace, crowned with many crowns.
At Lyons, (toward the close of the fifth century,) deceased the holy (Confessor) Patient, Bishop (of that see.) At Vercelli, (in the sixth century,) the holy (Confessor) Emilian, Bishop (of that see.) At Alexandria, (in the fifth century,) holy Theodora, who, having carelessly transgressed and deeply repented, continued unknown in the holy habit in wondrous self- denial and longsuffering, until her death.
