Quod enim dudum et tradítio decrévit, et consuetúdo firmávit; nec erudítio ignórat, nec píetas prætermíttit. Sed quia sacerdotális offícii est, erga omnes Ecclésiæ fílios curam habére commúnem, in id quod et rúdibus prosit et doctis, quos simul dilígimus, páriter incitámus; ut jejúnium, quod nobis séptimi mensis recúrsus indícit, fide álacri per castigatiónem ánimi et córporis celebrémus.

So bene, dilettissimi, che la massima parte di voi sono così fedeli alle pratiche della fede cristiana da non aver bisogno d'esservi eccitati dalle nostre esortazioni. Perché quanto già da molto tempo e la tradizione ha stabilito, e l'uso confermato, né la vostra intelligenza lo ignora, né la vostra pietà lo trascura. Ma siccome il ministero sacerdotale deve la medesima sollecitudine verso tutti i figli della Chiesa, ignoranti e dotti, ed amando noi egualmente gli uni e gli altri, perciò raccomandiamo loro ciò ch'è salutare a tutti; cioè di celebrare con viva fede, colla mortificazione dello spirito e del corpo, il digiuno cui ci obbliga il ritorno del settimo mese.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ci contentavamo della nostra povertà e la tenevamo per una ricchezza: non ci fosse mai stato quel denaro per cui hai mandato il nostro figlio,

Soffriamo dunque un po' di fame, dilettissimi, e togliamo dal nostro vitto quotidiano qualche cosa che possa giovare a soccorrere i poveri.

Omelia di sant'Ambrogio Vescovo
Libro 7 al cap. 14 di Luca
Ecco (prima) la guarigione d'un idropico in cui il peso della carne opprimeva l'anima, e soffocava l'ardore dello spirito. Poi viene una lezione d'umiltà, quando (il Signore), al banchetto nuziale condanna la scelta dei primi posti; egli lo fa tuttavia con dolcezza, volendo che una bontà persuasiva temperi la severità della riprensione, la ragione serva all'efficacia della persuasione, e la correzione reprima la cupidigia. Questa (lezione d'umiltà) è accompagnata da una lezione di misericordia: e la parola del Signore ci prova ch'essa si deve praticare verso i poveri e i deboli: perché essere ospitali con quelli che ci ricompenseranno, sa più di avarizia (che di carità).
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Abbiamo appreso le tribolazioni che hanno sofferto le città, e siam venuti meno: timore e debolezza di spirito si sono impossessati di noi e dei nostri figli: gli stessi monti non vogliono accogliere la nostra fuga:

Infine, a uno dei convitati, come a un veterano che ha finito i suoi anni di servizio, è dato per ricompensa il precetto del disprezzo delle ricchezze: perché il regno dei cieli non può essere acquistato da colui che, tutto intento alle cose di quaggiù, ha comprato delle possessioni terrene, avendo detto il Signore: «Vendi ciò che hai, e seguimi» Matth. 19,21: né da colui che s'è comprato dei buoi, avendo Eliseo ucciso e distribuito al popolo quelli che aveva: né da colui che, avendo preso moglie, pensa alle cose di questo mondo e non a quelle di Dio. Non già che si biasimi lo stato coniugale, ma solamente che la verginità è chiamata a un più grande onore: «perché la donna maritata e la vedova pensano alle cose di Dio, per essere sante di corpo e di spirito» 1Cor. 7,34.

But because it appertaineth to the priestly office to exercise the same general care over all the Church's children in all such matters as be profitable alike to the learned and to the simple (both of whom are equally dear to us), we do now exhort the both of you to celebrate, with lively faith, and all due discipline of soul and body, the Quarterly Fast, which the seventh month [that is, September] doth once again bring to us in its yearly round.

Now is healed this man sick of the dropsy, in whom too much watery matter had well-nigh drowned the functions of life, and quenched the fire of understanding. Anon, a lesson is given in lowly-mindedness, when it is forbidden to the guests at a marriage feast to go and sit down unasked in the highest room, albeit the Lord spake gently, that the teaching of courtesy might forestall a harsh rebuke, reason prevail by dint of persuasion, and the desires be bent to follow the instruction. And upon this, as next-door neighbour, cometh courtesy, which is so called by the Lord, when it is shown to the poor and weak, since to show it to them from whom we are to receive aught, is but a movement of self-interest.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. We have heard of the tribulation of those cities, which they have suffered, and we have fainted. Fear and confusion of mind are fallen upon us. Even the mountains will not give us a refuge.

Esaltazione della santa Croce, quando l'Imperatore Eraclio, vinto il Re Cósroa, la riportò dalla Pèrsia in Gerusalémme.
A Roma, sulla via Appia, il beato Comélio, Papa e Martire, il quale, nella persecuzione di Décio, dopo la relegazione in esilio, fu fatto battere con flagelli piombati, e così, con altre ventun persone di vario sesso, decapitare. Nello stesso giorno furono pure decapitati Cereale soldato e Sallùstia sua moglie, i quali dallo stesso Cornélio erano stati istruiti nella fede.
In Africa la passione di san Cipriàno, Vescovo di Cartagine, chiarissimo per santità e per dottrina, il quale, sotto i Principi Valeriàno e Galliéno, dopo un duro esilio, con la decapitazione compì il martirio, a sei miglia da Cartagine, vicino al mare. La festa però dei medesimi santi Cornélio e Cipriàno si celebra il sedici di questo mese.
Presso Comàna, nel Ponto, il natale di san Giovanni, Vescovo di Costantinòpoli, Confessore e Dottore della Chiesa, per l'aureo fiume dell'eloquenza soprannominato Crisòstomo, il quale, mandato in esilio per congiura dei suoi nemici, e quindi richiamato per decreto del Sommo Pontefice sant'Innocènze primo, durante il viaggio di ritorno, dopo aver patito molti travagli dai soldati che lo custodivano, rese l'anima a Dio. La sua festa si celebra il ventisette Gennaio, giorno nel quale il suo sacro corpo da Teodosio il Giovane fu trasferito a Costantinopoli. Questo celeberrimo predicatore della divina parola dal Papa Pio decimo fu dichiarato e costituito celeste Patrono dei sacri Oratori.
A Tréviri san Matèrno Vescovo, che fu discepolo del beato Piètro Apostolo, e convertì alla fede di Cristo i Tungrési, i Colonièsi, i Trevirèsi ed altri popoli circonvicini.

Martyrology {anticipated}
September 14th 2026, the 2nd day of the Moon, is commemorated the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, when the Emperor Heraclius brought it back from Persia to Jerusalem, after he had overcome King Chosroes.
Upon the same day, were born into the better life:

At Rome, upon the Appian Way, the blessed martyr Pope Cornelius.
In the persecution under Decius, he was first sentenced to exile, but afterwards to be beaten with scourges loaded with lead, and then to be beheaded, along with twenty others, both men and women. The soldier Cerealis and Sallustia his wife, unto whom Cornelius had taught the faith, were put to death upon the same day.
In Africa, the holy martyr Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, a man very famous for his holiness and teaching.
Under the Emperors Valerian and Gallienus, after a hard exile, he finished his testimony by being beheaded upon the seashore, at the sixth milestone from Carthage.
The feast of these two saints Cornelius and Cyprian is kept as one upon the 16th day of this present month of September.
There suffered at Carthage also the holy martyrs Crescentian, Victor, Rosula, and Generalis.
At Rome, the holy boy Crescentius, the son of holy Euthymius, who, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian, under the judge Turpilius, died upon the Salarian Way, smitten with the sword.
At Treves, holy Maternus, Bishop (of that see,) a disciple of the blessed Apostle Peter, who turned to the faith of Christ the people of Tongres, Cologne, and Treves, and other dwellers in the parts thereabout.
Upon the same day, holy John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople. By the plots of his enemies he was sent into exile, and although his recall was decreed by the Supreme Pontiff Innocent I., he suffered many things on his journey from the soldiers who had him in charge, and gave up his soul to God. His feast is kept upon the 27th day of January, upon the which day his sacred body was brought to Constantinople by the Emperor Theodosius the Younger.
