Munita di siffatte armi, ella s'avanzò e sconfisse tutto l'esercito degli Assiri. Colla forza della sua sobrietà ella recise la testa ad Oloferne, conservò la sua purezza, riportò la vittoria.

Così dunque, dopo aver digiunato tre giorni di seguito ed essersi lavata coll'acqua, ella piacque di più ed ottenne vendetta. Invece Aman, mentre è tutto fiero di sedere alla mensa della regina, è punito della sua intemperanza tra gli stessi vini. Il digiuno è dunque un sacrificio di riconciliazione, un accrescimento di forza, che rende le donne stesse più potenti aggiungendo loro venustà. Il digiuno non conosce prestiti, ignora interessi onerosi; la mensa di quelli che digiunano non sa di usura. Il digiuno dà ancora allegria agli stessi conviti perché (il buon trattamento abituale) diventa fastidioso e comune coll'uso continuato, e le vivande riescono più saporite quando si ha fame. Il digiuno è il condimento del cibo: più l'appetito è forte e più il nutrimento è dilettevole.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Confusi i sadducei, tornano alla carica i farisei; mentre avrebbero dovuto star quieti, vogliono continuare la lotta: e desiderosi di tendere insidie, non d'istruirsi, si fanno precedere da uno che si professava perito della legge; e fanno questa domanda: «Qual è il primo comandamento della legge?» Matth. 22,36. Perché il primo essendo: «Amerai il Signore Dio tuo» Matth. 22,37, pensavano ch'egli, che si dava per Dio, si allegherebbe delle ragioni per riformare questo comandamento e aggiungervi qualche cosa. Che fa dunque Cristo? Volendo mostrare ch'essi erano giunti a ciò perché non avevano alcuna carità, ma al contrario li rodeva la piaga dell'invidia: «Amerai, risponde, il Signore Dio tuo: questo è il primo e il più grande comandamento. II secondo poi, simile a questo, è: Amerai il prossimo tuo come te stesso» Matth. 22,37.

Se dunque amare Dio è amare il prossimo: (poiché il Signore dice: Se tu mi ami, o Pietro, pasci le mie pecore) Joann. 21,15 se anche l'amore del prossimo fa sì che tu osserva i comandamenti, con ragione dice che questo doppio amore contiene tutta la legge e i profeti. E, come s'è visto nei versetti precedenti, interrogato egli intorno alla risurrezione, aveva risposto, a quelli che lo tentavano, con un insegnamento più completo di quello che non reclamava la loro questione; così nella circostanza attuale, interrogate sul primo comandamento, spontaneamente vi aggiunse anche il secondo, il quale non è molto inferiore al primo; «poiché il secondo, dice, è simile al primo» Matth. 22,21. Così fece segretamente conoscere che i farisei erano spinti dall'odio a queste interrogazioni. «Poiché la carità è detto, non è invidiosa».

A banquet is all the pleasanter after hunger, whereas by constant use it becometh unattractive, and when it is long carried on cometh to be lightly esteemed. Fasting is a good sauce for meat. The keener the appetite, the more toothsome the food.

When the Pharisees had heard that Christ had put the Sadducees to silence, they gathered themselves together for a fresh attack just when it behoved them to be quiet, they willed to contend and so they put forward one of themselves who professed skill in the law, not wishing to learn, but to lay a snare. This person therefore proposed the question: “Which is the great commandment in the law?” The first and great commandment is: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God,” but they expected that He would make some exception or addition to this in His Own case, since He made Himself God. John x. 33. With this expectation they asked Him the question, but what said Christ? To show that they had adopted this course, because they were loveless, and sick with envy, He answered: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

Martirologio {anticipated}

In Etiòpia il natale di san Mattéo, Apostolo ed Evangelista, il quale, predicando in quella regione, patì il martirio. Il suo Vangelo, scritto in lingua ebraica, per rivelazione dello stesso Mattéo, fu ritrovato insieme col corpo del beato Bàrnaba Apostolo, al tempo dell'Imperatore Zenone.
Nella terra di Saar san Giona Profeta, il quale fu sepolto in Get.
In Etiòpia santa Ifigénia Vergine, la quale, battezzata dal beato Mattéo Apostolo e consacrata a Dio, con santa fine si riposò.
A Roma san Pànfilo Martire.
Nello stesso giorno, sulla via Clàudia, a venti miglia da Roma, la passione di sant'Alessandro Vescovo, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Antonino, per la fede di Cristo superò le catene, i bastoni, l'eculeo, le fiaccole ardenti, la lacerazione con uncini di ferro, le fiere e le fiamme della fornace, e finalmente, percosso colla spada, conquistò la gloriosa vita. Il suo corpo dal beato Dàmaso Papa fu poi trasportato a Roma il ventisei Novembre.

Martyrology {anticipated}
September 21st 2026, the 9th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, who suffered in Ethiopia, where he had preached the Gospel. A copy of his Gospel written in the Hebrew language was, by a revelation from himself, found in the time of the Emperor Zeno, along with the body of the blessed Apostle Barnabas.

Likewise at Rome, at the twentieth milestone from the city upon the Claudian Way, the holy Bishop and martyr Pope Alexander I. Under the Emperor Antonine, he, for Christ's faith's sake, overcame fettering, cudgelling, racking, burning with lamps, tearing with hooks, exposure to wild beasts, and the fire of a furnace, and being at last beheaded won the life of glory that fadeth not away. The blessed Pope Damasus afterwards brought his body into the city on the 26th day of November, upon the which day he commanded a feast to be kept in his honour.
In Phoenicia, the holy martyr Eusebius, who went openly to the Prefect and proclaimed himself a Christian, for the which cause he was put to many torments and then beheaded.
In Cyprus, the holy Bishop and martyr Isacius, and there also the holy Bishop and Confessor Meletius.
