Lettura 4
Tommaso nato in Spagna nella città di Fontepiano nella diocesi di Toledo nell'anno del Signore 1488 da ottimi genitori, fin da bambino nutrì verso i poveri sentimenti particolari d'affetto e di misericordia. E, fanciullo ancora, ne diede numerosi esempi; quello, fra gli altri, che più d'una volta si spogliò delle proprie vesti per coprire chi non ne aveva. Uscito d'infanzia, fu mandato ad Alcalà per studiarvi le lettere come alunno nel collegio maggiore di san Idelfonso, ma richiamato per la morte del padre, consacrò tutta la sua eredità al mantenimento di vergini indigenti; poi, tornatovi subito per compiervi il corso di sacra teologia, si distinse talmente nel sapere, che, costretto a occuparvi una delle cattedre dell'università, vi trattò meravigliosamente le questioni di filosofia e di teologia, senza cessare nel contempo di chiedere a Dio istantissimamente con assidue preghiere la scienza dei Santi e una norma retta di vita e di costumi. Quindi, dietro ispirazione divina abbracciò l'istituto degli Eremiti di sant'Agostino.

Divenuto professore, si distinse in tutte le virtù che sono l'ornamento della vita religiosa, nell'umiltà, pazienza, continenza, ma soprattutto fu celebre per la sua ardentissima carità, mantenendosi, tra le svariate e molteplici occupazioni, collo spirito sempre fortemente applicato all'orazione e alla meditazione delle cose divine. Costretto d'accettare l'onere della predicazione impostagli a motivo dell'eminente sua santità e dottrina, aiutato dalla grazia divina, ritrasse dal fango del vizio sulla via della salvezza peccatori senza numero. Chiamato poi a reggere i suoi confratelli, seppe unire la prudenza, la equità e la dolcezza con pari sollecitudine e severità; così che rafforzò o ristabilì l'antica disciplina del suo ordine in molte case.

Lettura 6
Designato all'arcivescovado di Granata, ricusò l'insigne dignità con mirabile umiltà e costanza. Ma poi, costretto da ordine dei superiori, accettò il governo della chiesa di Valenza, che amministrò per quasi quindici anni così bene, da compiere tutti i doveri d'un pastore santissimo e zelantissimo. Peraltro senza cambiar nulla del suo tenore di vita abituale. la sua inestinguibile carità si esercitò ancor più generosamente, prodigando ai poveri le rendite considerevoli della sua chiesa, non riserbandosi neppure il letto; poiché quello su cui trovavasi allorché fu chiamato in cielo, gli era stato imprestato da quello stesso cui egli l'aveva donato poco prima a titolo di elemosina. Si addormentò nel Signore l'8 Settembre in età di 68 anni. Dio volle manifestare la santità del suo servo e in vita e dopo morte; così un granaio rimasto del tutto vuoto, per averne distribuito il frumento ai poveri, si ritrovò ripieno d'un tratto, e un fanciullo morto ritornò alla vita sulla sua tomba. Glorificato da questi ed altri miracoli, il sommo Pontefice Alessandro VII l'iscrisse nel numero dei Santi.

Omelia 9 sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, ci avverte di considerare diligentemente che noi, che abbiamo ricevuto in questo mondo più degli altri, saremo poi giudicati più severamente dall'autore del mondo. Infatti più i doni sono numerosi, e tanto più grande è il conto che bisogna renderne. Le grazie dunque che si ricevono, devono rendere ciascuno tanto più umile e più pronto a servire a Dio, quanto più si vide obbligato a renderne conto. Ecco un uomo che, nel mettersi in viaggio, chiama i suoi servi e divide tra loro i talenti da far fruttare. Ma dopo molto tempo ritorna per chiederne conto, e ricompensa del guadagno fatto coloro che li hanno impiegati bene, mentre condanna il servo che fu negligente nel farli fruttare.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,

Chi è dunque quest'uomo che si mette in viaggio, se non il nostro Redentore che, col corpo che aveva preso, se ne andò in cielo? La terra è infatti il luogo proprio della carne; ed essa è comò condotta a mettersi in viaggio quando dal nostro Redentore viene portata in cielo. Ma, come quest'uomo, egli, prima di mettersi in viaggio, consegnò ai suoi servi i propri beni, perché concesse ai suoi fedeli dei doni spirituali. E ad uno diede cinque talenti, ad un altro due, ad un altro uno. Cinque sono infatti i sensi del corpo, cioè: la vista, l'udito, il gusto, l'odorato e il tatto. Con i cinque talenti dunque viene rappresentato il dono dei cinque sensi, cioè la conoscenza delle cose esteriori ; con i due talenti invece vengono indicati l'intelletto e l'azione; con l'unico talento infine si indica soltanto l'intelletto.

Commemorazione: Ss. Maurizio e Soci Martiri
L'imperatore Massimiano condotto il suo esercito in Gallia, si fermò sui confini del cantone di Sion per offrir un sacrificio, ma la legione Tebana per non contaminarsi partecipando a cerimonie sacrileghe, si distaccò dal resto delle truppe. Quindi l'imperatore inviò loro dei soldati ad avvertirli in suo nome che, se volevano aver salva la vita, tornassero al campo per il sacrificio: ma essi risposero che la religione cristiana ne li proibiva. Indignato per questa risposta, s'irritò ancor di più. Perciò spedì una parte dell'esercito contro i Tebani coll'ordine di ucciderne prima uno ogni dieci; martirio ch'essi preferirono volentieri, animati soprattutto da Maurizio, piuttosto che sottomettersi alle empie ingiunzioni dell'imperatore. Il quale poi li fece trucidare tutti dall'intero esercito il 22 Settembre, mentre confessavano intrepidi il nome di Cristo.

Thomas of Villanova was born of excellent parentage, in the town of Fuenlana, in the Diocese of Toledo in Spain, in the year of our Lord 1488, and was early taught godliness, and a special pitifulness towards the needy. Of this grace he gave many examples while he was still a lad, whereof it is an eminent one that he more than once stripped himself of raiment of his own, in order to clothe the naked. He was become a man when the death of his father called him from Alcala, whither he had been sent to work as a student in the great College of St. Alonzo. He gave all the inheritance which fell to him to feed poor unmarried women, and forthwith returned to Alcala, and finished his course in Theology. He was so eminent in learning that he was commanded to take a Professorship in that University, and delivered remarkable Lectures upon Philosophy and Theology. Meanwhile he ceased not earnestly to entreat of the Lord in prayer the knowledge of the Saints, and to know what was the path of life whereunto he was called. In course of time, by the inspiration of God, he entered the Institute of Hermits of St. Augustine.

He was named to the Archbishopric of Granada, but, with excellent lowliness and firmness, he refused to take so high a place. However, not long after, he was forced by the commands of his superiors to accept the government of the Church of Valencia, which he discharged for nearly eleven years with the reputation of a most holy and watchful shepherd of souls. His elevation changed nowise his way of life, except to give greater scope to his wonderful charity by placing the revenues of a wealthy Church at his disposal to distribute to the poor. He did not leave himself even a bed that on which he was lying when he was called to heaven, he had only on loan from a person to whom he had shortly before given it as an alms. He fell asleep in the Lord upon the 8th day of September, in the 69th year of his own age, and of our Lord 1555. God was pleased to approve the holiness of His servant by miracles, both during his life and after his death, whereof are specially remarked that when he had utterly emptied his barn by giving away all his corn to the poor, it was suddenly found full again, and that a dead boy was raised to life at his grave. Finding him famous for these signs, and not a few others, Pope Alexander VII. enrolled him in the list of the Saints, and ordered that his memory should be held in remembrance upon the 18th day of September.

Dearly beloved brethren, this Lesson from the Holy Gospel moveth us to take good heed lest we, who are seen in this world to have received more than others, should thereby bring ourselves into greater condemnation from the Maker of this world. To whom much is given, of the same is much required. Therefore, let him that receiveth much, strive to be all the more lowly, and all the more ready to do God service, for his very gifts’ sake, knowing that he will be obliged to give account thereof. Behold, a man, travelling into a far country, calleth his own servants, and delivereth unto them talents, to the end that they may trade therewith. After a long time, the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them, and to them that have done well He rendereth a reward of their labours, but that servant which was careless of his master’s work He condemneth.

What other, then, is that man travelling into a far country but our Redeemer, Who is gone up from us into heaven in that Flesh Which He had taken into Himself? For the earth is the home of the Flesh, Which travelleth into a far country when our Redeemer giveth It a place in heaven. But that man travelling into a far country delivered unto his servants his goods and so doth our Redeemer give spiritual gifts unto His faithful people. “And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one.” There are five bodily senses that is, sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. By the five talents therefore are signified the five senses, that is, outward knowledge. By the two, wit and work. And by the figure of the one talent, understanding, which is alone.

Commemoration of: Ss. Maurice and companions, Martyrs
When the Emperor Maximian led his army into Gaul, he stopped at the frontiers of the Seduni to offer a sacrifice. The Theban legion, that they might not be defiled by any share in the unhallowed rites, withdrew themselves from the rest of his army. Therefore the Emperor sent soldiers unto them to bid them in his name, if they valued their lives, come back into the camp to the sacrifice. They answered that the Christian religion did not allow them. This answer enkindled in him greater wrath than before. He therefore despatched a part of his army to the Thebans. with orders to begin by killing one man in every ten of them. By their own will, and at the urgent exhortation of Maurice, they chose rather to endure this martyrdom than to do the commandment of the unrighteous Emperor. At the last, the Emperor, upon the 22nd day of September, bade his whole army fall upon them and slay them all. They confessed Christ bravely even to the end.

A Roma san Lino, Papa e Martire, il quale, per il primo dopo il beato Piétro Apostolo, governò la Chiesa Romana, e, coronato col martirio, fu sepolto nel Vaticàno, presso lo stesso Apostolo.
Ad Icónio, nella Licaónia, santa Tecla, Vergine e Martire, la quale, convertita alla fede da san Pàolo Apostolo, sotto l'Imperatore Neróne, nella confessione di Cristo vinse il fuoco e le fiere; e dopo aver superato, per istruzione di molti, innumerevoli combattimenti, andò a Selèucia, ed ivi si riposò in pace. Essa fu celebrata con somme lodi dai santi Padri.
In Spagna le sante Santippa e Polisséna, che furono discepole degli Apostoli.

Martyrology {anticipated}
September 23rd 2026, the 11th day of the Moon, was born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy martyr Pope Linus. He was the first successor of the blessed Apostle Peter in the government of the Church of Rome, was crowned with martyrdom, and is buried upon the Vatican Hill, hard by the Apostle.
At Iconium, in Lycaonia, the holy Virgin and martyr Thecla. She was converted to the faith by the holy Apostle Paul. Under the Emperor Nero she overcame fire and beasts for her confession of Christ, and after many contendings, wherein she was victorious, for the teaching of many, she came to Seleucia, and there fell asleep in peace. The holy Fathers do greatly extol her.
In Campania is made commemoration of the blessed Sosius, Deacon of the Church of Miseno. One while when he was reading the Gospel in the church, the holy Bishop Januarius saw flames rising from his head, and foretold that he would be a martyr. Neither was it many days afterward, when, being himself of the age of thirty years, he was beheaded along with the said Bishop, and so received martyrdom.
In Africa, the holy martyrs Andrew, John, Peter, and Anthony.
In the country of Coutances, the holy martyr Paternus, the Bishop.
