Il tempo in cui la più vasta e più bella parte della Spagna era oppressa dal barbaro giogo dei Saraceni, e innumerevoli fedeli sotto sì inumana e infelice schiavitù, correvano grandissimo pericolo di rinnegare la fede cristiana, e di compromettere l'eterna salute, la beatissima Regina del cielo volendo benevolmente rimediare ai mali sì grandi e numerosi, manifestò la sua estrema carità per liberarli. Difatti, mentre san Pietro Nolasco, rinomato per pietà e ricchezze, andava continuamente ruminando nelle sue sante meditazioni in qual maniera poter venire in aiuto delle calamità di tanti Cristiani degenti sono la dominazione dei Mori, gli apparve con volto ilare la stessa beatissima Vergine, dicendogli come sarebbe accettissimo a lei e al suo Figlio unigenito, se si fondasse in suo onore un ordine religioso avente per scopo di liberare gli schiavi dalla tirannide dei Turchi. Incoraggiato da questa celeste visione, l'uomo di Dio, sentissi avvampare d'un'ardente carità, e non ebbe in cuore più che una sola brama, di consacrare se stesso e l'ordine che avrebbe istituito alla pratica continua di questo amore generosissimo per cui ciascuno avrebbe data la sua vita per gli amici e per il suo prossimo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

La medesima notte, la santissima Vergine apparve anche al beato Raimondo di Pennafort e a Giacomo re d'Aragona, esortandoli a istituire lo stesso ordine religioso, e persuadendoli a concorrere colla loro fortuna alla fondazione di sì bell'opera. Pietro poi corse subito ai piedi di Raimondo, suo confessore, e gli fece conoscere ogni cosa; e trovatolo al corrente di tutto per rivelazione celeste, si mise umilmente sotto la sua direzione. Ma sopraggiunto il re Giacomo, decise d'eseguire quanto la beatissima Vergine gli aveva rivelato. Quindi, dopo aver conferito fra loro, trovatisi d'accordo intrapresero la fondazione d'un ordine in onore della Vergine Madre, sotto nome di santa Maria della mercede o della redenzione degli schiavi.

Pertanto il 10 d'Agosto dell'anno del Signore 1218, il re Giacomo decretò la fondazione di quest'istituto già concepito da quei santi uomini, obbligandone i soci con un quarto voto, di rimanere come ostaggi in potere dei pagani, se fosse stato necessario per la liberazione dei Cristiani. Il re concesse loro di portare sul petto le sue proprie armi, e s'interessò di far approvare da Gregorio IX questo istituto e i voti religiosi ispirati da sì sublime carità verso il prossimo. Ma lo stesso Dio, mercé la Vergine Madre, fece crescere talmente questa istituzione, che con molta rapidità e successo si sparse su tutta la faccia della terra, e fiorì di santi uomini insigni per carità e pietà, i quali si dedicavano a raccogliere elemosine dai Cristiani per riscattare i loro fratelli, e dare spesso se stessi come pegno per liberarne un gran numero. Al fine poi di rendere a Dio e alla Vergine Madre le dovute grazie per sì benefica istituzione, la Sede apostolica dopo aver accordato allo stesso ordine innumerevoli privilegi, concedesse di celebrare questa festa particolare e di recitarne l'Ufficio.

Lib 4 Cap 49 su Luca 11
Questa donna si mostra in possesso di devozione di fede profonda, poiché, mentre gli scribi ed i farisei tentano il Signore e lo bestemmiano, ella riconosce davanti a tutti la sua incarnazione con tanta sincerità, e la confessa con fede così grande, da confondere e la calunnia dei grandi presenti e la perfidia dei futuri eretici. Infatti, come allora i Giudei, bestemmiando contro le opere dello Spirito Santo, negavano che Cristo fosse vero Figlio di Dio consustanziale al Padre; così in seguito gli eretici, negando che Maria sempre Vergine avesse somministrato, per opera e merito dello Spirito Santo, la materia della propria carne al Figlio unigenito di Dio che doveva nascere con un corpo umano, sostennero che non si doveva riconoscere come vero Figlio dell'uomo e della medesima sostanza della madre.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ma se si ritiene che il corpo preso dal Verbo di Dio incarnandosi è estraneo alla carne della vergine Madre, senza motivo vengono detti beati il seno che lo portò e il petto che lo allattò. Ora l'Apostolo dice: «Poiché Dio mandò il suo Figlio, fatto da una donna, sottomesso alla legge». E non bisogna dar retta a coloro che pensano si debba leggere: Nato da una donna, sottomesso alla legge, ma bisogna invece leggere: «Fatto da una donna»; perché, concepito nel seno di una vergine, ha tratto la carne non dal nulla, non da altra cosa, ma dalla carne materna. Altrimenti non si potrebbe dire con verità Figlio dell'uomo colui che non ha avuto origine dall'uomo. Anche noi dunque alziamo la nostra voce contro Eutiche insieme con la Chiesa cattolica, di cui questa donna fu figura; solleviamo anche la mente dal mezzo della folla e diciamo al Salvatore: «Beato il seno che ti ha portato e il petto che hai succhiato». Poiché è veramente madre beata ella che, come disse un autore, ha dato alla luce il Re, che regge il cielo e la terra per i secoli.

«Non solo, ma beati coloro che ascoltano la parola di Dio e la mettono in pratica». Il Salvatore approva eminentemente l'attestazione di questa donna, affermando che è beata non soltanto colei che aveva meritato di essere madre corporale del Verbo di Dio, ma che sono beati anche tutti coloro che si sforzeranno di concepire spiritualmente lo stesso Verbo istruendosi nella fede e che, praticando le buone opere, lo faranno nascere e quasi lo alimenteranno sia nel proprio cuore, sia in quello del prossimo. Infatti la stessa Madre di Dio è sì beata per aver contribuito nel tempo all'incarnazione del Verbo, ma è molto più beata perché meritò, amandolo sempre, di custodirlo in sé eternamente.

In the early part of the thirteenth century of the era of our Lord, the greatest and fairest part of Spain lay crushed under the yoke of the Saracens, and countless numbers of the faithful were held in brutal slavery, with the most lively danger of being made to deny the Christian faith and of losing everlasting salvation. Amid such sorrows the most Blessed Queen of heaven came mercifully to the rescue, and showed how the greatness of her motherly love was fain for their redemption. Holy Peter Nolasco, in the full bloom of the treasures of godliness as well as rich in earthly wealth, was earnestly pondering with himself how he could succour so many suffering Christians dwelling in bondage to the Moors. To him appeared with gracious visage the Most Blessed Virgin, and bade him know that it would be well pleasing in her own sight, and in the sight of her Only-begotten Son, that an Order of Religious men should be founded in her honour, whose work it should be to redeem prisoners from Mohammedan slavery. Strengthened by this heavenly vision, the man of God began to burn with wonderful charity, nursing in his heart the one desire that he himself and the Order which he should found might exercise that love, greater than which hath no man, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John xv. 13.

The King granted them the right to bear on their breasts his own Royal blazon, and obtained from Gregory IX. the confirmation of this Institute and Order so nobly marked by brotherly charity. God Himself, through the Virgin Mother, gave the increase, causing this Institute speedily and prosperously to spread through all the world, and to blossom with holy men, great in love and godliness, to spend in the redemption of their neighbours the alms which are committed to them by Christ's faithful people, to that end, and some whiles to give themselves up for the ransom of many. That due thanks might be rendered to God and to the Virgin Mother for the great blessing of this Institute, the See Apostolic among other well-nigh countless favours bestowed upon it, permitted that this special Feast-day should be kept and this Office said.

It is plain that this was a woman of great earnestness and faith. The Scribes and Pharisees were at once tempting and blaspheming the Lord, but this woman so clearly grasped His Incarnation, and so bravely confessed the same, that she confounded both the lies of the great men who were present, and the faithlessness of the heretics who were yet to come. Even as the Jews then, blaspheming the works of the Holy Ghost, denied the very Son of God Who is of one substance with the Father, so afterwards did the heretics, by denying that Mary always a Virgin did, under the operation of the Holy Ghost, supply flesh to the Only begotten One of God, when He was about being born in an human Body, even so, I say, did the heretics deny that the Son of Man should be called a true Son, Who is of one substance with His Mother.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

If we shall say that the Flesh, Wherewith the Son of God was born in the flesh, was something outside of the flesh of the Virgin His Mother, without reason should we bless the womb that bore Him, and the paps which He hath sucked. But the Apostle saith: “God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law”, Gal. iv. 4, and they are not to be listened to who read this passage: “Born of a woman, made under the law.” He was made of a woman, for He was conceived in a virgin's womb, and took His Flesh, not from nothing, not from elsewhere, but from the flesh of His Mother. Nel castello di Emmaus il natale del beato Cléofa, che fu discepolo di Cristo. Di lui si narra che per la confessione di Cristo fu ucciso dai Giudèi nella medesima casa, in cui aveva al Signore preparato la mensa, e che fu ivi sepolto con gloriosa memoria.
Ad Amiens, in Frància, il beato Firmino Vescovo, il quale nella persecuzione di Diocleziàno, sotto il Preside Riziovàro, dopo vari tormenti, colla decapitazione subì il martirio.
Presso Roma, sulla via Claudia, sant'Ercolàno, soldato e Martire, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Antonino, si convertì a Cristo per i miracoli avvenuti nella passione del beato Alessandro Vescovo, e per la confessione della fede, dopo molti tormenti, fu ucciso colla spada.
A Damàsco i santi Martiri Pàolo e Tatta sua moglie, e Sabiniàno, Màssimo, Rufo ed Eugénio loro figli, i quali, accusati di esser Cristiani, furono tormentati con battiture ed altri supplizi, e nei tormenti resero le loro anime a Dio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Ninian, Bishop of Galloway in Scotland, of whom mention is made upon the 16th day of this present month of September.
September 25th 2026, the 13th day of the Moon, were born into the better life: At the village of Emmaus, blessed Cleophas, the disciple of Christ, of whom it is said that he was slain by the Jews for confessing the Lord, and thereafter buried with glorious memory within the same house wherein he had prepared a table for the Lord.
At Rome, the holy martyr Herculan.
He was a soldier who was turned to Christ on beholding the miracles that were wrought at the passion of the blessed bishop (Pope) Alexander (the First) and was beheaded under the Emperor Antonine, after suffering many torments.
At Amiens, in Gaul, blessed Firmin, (of Pampeluna, first) Bishop (of Amiens,) who suffered martyrdom under the President Rictiovarus, in the persecution under Diocletian, by being beheaded, after enduring diverse torments.
At Damascus, the holy martyrs Paul, Tatta his wife, and their sons Sabinian, Maximus, Rufus, and Eugene.
On the accusation that they were Christians they were flogged and otherwise tormented, and gave up their souls to God.
In Asia, the holy martyrs Bardomian, Eucarpus, and twenty-six others.
On the same day, holy Anathalon; he was a disciple of the blessed Apostle Barnabas, and followed after him as Bishop of the Church of Milan.
