2 E così urlando andava fino alle porte del palazzo; ché non era lecito entrare nella reggia vestito di sacco.
3 Similmente in tutte le province, città e luoghi dov'era giunto il crudele editto del re, era gran pianto presso i Giudei, e digiunavano, gridavano, gemevano e molti giacevano sul sacco e sulla cenere invece che sul letto.
4 Intanto le cameriere di Ester e gli eunuchi andarono da lei e le annunziarono la cosa. Appena l'ebbe udita ella rimase costernata e mandò un vestito (per Mardocheo), affinché, toltogli il sacco, ne lo rivestissero: ma egli non volle riceverlo.
5 Allora ella chiamato Atach eunuco datole dal re per servirla, gli ordinò di andare da Mardocheo per sapere da lui perché faceva così.

Come potrò dunque entrare dal re io, che già da trenta giorni non sono stata chiamata da lui?

Girolamo, figlio di Eusebio, nato Stridone nella Dalmazia, sotto l'imperatore Costanzo, fu battezzalo a Roma, adolescente, ed istruito nelle scienze liberali da Donato e da altri uomini dottissimi. Quindi, avido di sapere, visitò la Francia, dove strinse relazione con alcuni uomini pii e versati nelle sacre Scritture, e vi copiò di sua mano molti libri sacri. Poco dopo, passato in Grecia, già istruito nella filosofia e nella retorica, si perfezionò nell'intimità coi più famosi teologi. Ma fu sopratutto discepolo assiduo di Gregorio Nazianzéno a Costantinopoli; ed egli stesso dichiara che deve a questo dottore la sua scienza nelle sacre lettere. Poi visitò per devozione la culla di Cristo Signore, e percorse l'intera Palestina; il quale pellegrinaggio, mettendolo in relazione cogli Ebrei più eruditi, gli giovò molto, come attesta lui stesso, a capire il senso della sacra Scrittura.

In seguito si ritirò in una vasta solitudine della Siria; dove passò quattro anni nello studio dei libri santi e nella contemplazione della beatitudine celeste, mortificandosi con un'astinenza continua, macerando la carne e versando copiose lacrime. Ordinato prete da Paolino, vescovo di Antiochia, partì per Roma al fine di conferire con Papa Damaso su controversie di certi vescovi con Paolino ed Epifanio, e gli fu di aiuto nella redazione delle sue lettere alle chiese. Ma sentendo rinascere il desiderio dell'antica solitudine, ritornò in Palestina, adottando nel monastero fondato da Paola Romana, a Betlemme, presso la culla di Cristo Signore, un tenore di vita affatto celeste; e benché provato da varie malattie e sofferenze, pure dominava le infermità del corpo dedicandosi senza posa a pii lavori, allo studio e alla composizione di opere.

Da tutte parti si ricorreva a lui come ad un oracolo nelle questioni della sacra Scrittura, Papa Damaso, sant'Agostino lo consultarono spesso sui passi più difficili della Scrittura, a motivo della sua scienza eminente e della conoscenza che aveva non solo della lingua Greca e Latina, ma dell'Ebraica altresì e della Caldaica; e perché, per testimonianza dello stesso san Agostino, aveva letto le opere di quasi tutti gli scrittori. Perseguitò gli eretici con scritti vigorosissimi; e i pii cattolici ebbero sempre il suo appoggio. Tradusse in Latino dall'Ebraico l'Antico Testamento; per ordine di Damaso corresse il Nuovo sull'originale Greco, e ne commentò una gran parte. Inoltre tradusse in Latino molte opere di uomini dotti, e con altri monumenti del suo genio illustrò la disciplina cristiana. Giunto a grande vecchiezza, illustre per santità e dottrina, se ne andò in cielo sotto l'imperatore Onorio. Il suo corpo, sepolto a Betlemme, fu in seguito trasportato a Roma nella basilica di santa Maria al Presepio.

Libro 1, Commento al capo 5 di Matteo
Gli Apostoli e i Dottori sono chiamati sale; perché la loro dottrina è il condimento di tutto il genere umano. «Ora, se il sale diventerà insipido, con che si salerà» Mt 5,13 Se il dottore sbaglia, da qual altro dottore sarà egli corretto «Non serve più a nulla, se non ad essere gettato via e calpestato dalla gente» Mt 5,13. La comparazione è presa dall'agricoltura. Infatti, il sale è necessario per condire i cibi e salare le carni, ma non ha altra utilità. Sebbene leggiamo negli Scritti, che ci furono delle città, in cui la vendetta dei vincitori fece spargere del sale, affinché non vi spuntasse più filo di vegetazione.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Si guardino dunque i dottori e i vescovi, e riflettano che «I grandi soffriranno grandi tormenti» Sap 6,7; e che se si perdono non c'è più rimedio, e la caduta dei grandi trascina all'inferno. «Voi siete la Luce del mondo. Non può rimaner nascosta una città situata su un monte; né si accende una lucerna per metterla sotto il moggio, ma sul candeliere; perché faccia luce a tutti quelli che sono in casa» Mt 5,14. Egli insegna qui l'ardire della predicazione, che cioè gli Apostoli non si nascondano per paura, rassomigliando così a una lucerna sotto il moggio; ma che si producano con tutta libertà, e predichino sulle terrazze quanto appresero in segreto.

«Non state a credere che io sia venuto per abolire la legge o i profeti; non sono venuto per abolirli, ma per completarli» Mt 5,17. Sia compiendo egli stesso quanto altri avevano profetato di sé, sia perfezionando colla sua predicazione quanto era stato appena abbozzato e lasciato imperfetto a motivo della debolezza degli uditori, riprovando la collera, sopprimendo la pena del taglione, e condannando la concupiscenza che si cela nella mente. «Finché non passerà il cielo e la terra» Mt 5,18. Ci si promettono nuovi cieli e nuova terra, che farà il Signore Dio. Quindi se dovrà farsi una nuova creazione, scomparirà di conseguenza la vecchia.

Reading 4
Jerome was the son of one Eusebius, and was born at Sorigni, (a small town upon the confines) of Dalmatia, in the reign of the Emperor Constantius. He was baptised at Rome when a lad, and studied there, under the instruction of Donatus and other very learned personages. He travelled in Gaul for the sake of improving his mind, and there sought the friendship of diverse godly men learned in the Scriptures, and made with his own hand many copies of the holy books. He afterwards betook himself to Greece, where he attained eminence as a philosopher and orator, in the following of the most famous theologians. At Constantinople, in especial, he sat at the feet of Gregory of Nazianzus, from whom he professeth himself to have learnt his theology. Then, for godliness' sake, he went to see the home of the Lord Christ, and so throughout all Palestine. He witnesseth that this pilgrimage, wherein he got the help of the most learned of the Jews for the understanding of the Holy Scriptures, did him much good.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him;

Reading 5
He withdrew himself into the wild deserts of Syria, where he passed four years in studying the Holy Scriptures and in considering the blessedness of heaven, afflicting his body by alway denying himself, by bitter tears, and by chastisement of the flesh. He was ordained Priest by Paulinus, Patriarch of Antioch. He went to Rome on account of the quarrelling of certain Bishops with Paulinus and Epiphanius, and there helped Pope Damasus in the writing of his letters upon Church affairs. But the longing for his old solitude came upon him, and he went back to Palestine, where, in the monastery at Bethlehem, built beside the cradle of the Lord Christ by the Lady Paula of Rome, he set himself to enter on earth upon the life of heaven, serving God in reading and writing without ceasing, regardless of the sufferings of a body tormented by diverse diseases and pains.

Reading 6
Hard questions upon the interpretation of the Holy Scripture were sent to him from all parts of the earth, as to an oracle. He was oftentimes consulted by Pope Damasus and by the holy Augustine upon the meaning of the most obscure passages of the Scripture, because of his extraordinary learning, and that he knew not the Latin and Greek tongues only, but also the Hebrew and Chaldee, and, as the same Augustine testifieth, had read nearly all writers. He attacked heretics with keen publications, and ever undertook the defence of the godly and Catholic. He translated the Old Testament from Hebrew into Latin, and, at the command of Damasus, reformed, according to the original Greek, the existing version of the New. Upon great part of the Scriptures he wrote commentaries. He translated likewise into Latin the works of many learned men, and himself contributed to the Christian life many monuments of his own wit. He lived to an extreme old age, and passed away to heaven, famous for learning and holiness, in the reign of the Emperor Honorius, upon the 30th day of September, in the year of our Lord 420. His body was buried at Bethlehem, but hath since been brought to Rome, where it lieth in the Church of St. Mary-at-the-Manger.

Book i. Comm. on Matth. v.
Apostles and teachers are called salt, for it is by them that the whole mass of mankind is seasoned. But if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? If the teacher have gone astray, by what other teacher is he to be corrected? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. This is a figure taken from farming. Salt is used to savour food withal, and to preserve meat, but it hath no other use. In sooth, we read in the Scriptures of some cities which were sown with salt in the fury of their conquerors, that no bud of life might ever spring there again.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
* May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them.
℣. Behold a man without blame, a worshipper of God in truth, keeping himself clean from every evil work, and abiding still in his innocency.

The teachers and Bishops, then, look well to it, seeing that mighty men shall be mightily tormented, Wisd. vi. 7. And there is no help for them, but they fall into hell with a greater crash. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that it may give light unto all that are in the house. Here He teacheth boldness in preaching, lest the Apostles should shrink away from fear, and be like unto candles under a bushel; but contrariwise should come forward with all freedom, and should proclaim upon the house-tops that which had been spoken in the ear in closets. Luke xii. 3.

Think not that I am come to destroy the Law or the Prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. The meaning is, either that He was come to fulfill those things which others had prophesied concerning Him, or that He was come to give the full measure of those things which had been spoken darkly and imperfectly on account of the weakness of their hearers, making away with anger, forbidding to take eye for eye and tooth for tooth, and condemning the secret lusting of the heart. Till heaven and earth pass, (one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Law, till all be fulfilled.) But there are promised unto us new heavens and a new earth, which the Lord God shall make. And if new things are to be created, old things must pass away.

Luke 1:68-79
1:68 Blessed be the Lord ✠ God of Israel; * because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:

1:70 As he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * who are from the beginning:
1:71 Salvation from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:
1:72 To perform mercy to our fathers, * and to remember his holy testament,
1:73 The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, * that he would grant to us,
1:74 That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, * we may serve him without fear,
1:75 In holiness and justice before him, * all our days.
1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:
1:77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people, * unto the remission of their sins:
1:78 Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, * in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:
1:79 To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: * to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Martyrology {anticipated}
October 1st 2026, the 19th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The holy Confessor Remy, (15th) Archbishop of Reims, in Gaul, who converted the French nation to Christ, baptized their king Chlodwig, and administered to him the Sacraments of the faith. Remy passed many years in his labors as Bishop, and was famous for his holiness and for the power of working miracles. He died upon the 13th day of January, (in the year 533,) but his feast is kept upon the 1st day of October, which is that of the translation of his sacred body.
At Rome, the blessed martyrs Aretas, (in the year 852,) and five hundred and four others.
At Tomi, in Pontus, the holy martyrs Priscus, Crescens, and Evagrius.
At Lisbon, in Portugal, the holy martyrs Verissimus and his sisters Maxima and Julia, who suffered in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Tournai, in Hainaut, the holy martyr Piaton, a Priest, who came from Rome to Gaul to preach along with the blessed Quinctinus and his Companions, and afterwards finished his testimony by martyrdom, in the persecution under the Emperor Maximian, and so passed away to be ever with the Lord.
At Thessalonica, under the same Emperor Maximian, the holy martyr Domninus.
At Gent, the holy Confessor Bavo, (in the seventh century.)

57:2 Se davvero voi parlate di giustizia, * giudicate con rettitudine, o figli degli uomini.
57:3 Ma voi nel cuore operate iniquità; * sulla terra le vostre mani ordiscono ingiustizie.
57:4 I peccatori hanno fuorviato sin dal seno materno, hanno deviato sin dalla nascita: * hanno detto falsità.
57:5 Il loro furore è simile a quello di un serpente: * a quello di un'aspide sorda, che si tura le orecchie.
57:6 E non ode la voce dell'incantatore: * e del mago abile nell'ammaliare.
57:7 Dio stritolerà loro i denti in bocca: * il Signore spezzerà le mascelle dei leoni.
57:8 Si ridurranno al nulla come acqua che scorre; * egli tien teso il suo arco, fino a che siano abbattuti.
57:9 Come cera che si fonde saranno distrutti: * cadde sopra di essi il fuoco, e non videro più il sole.
57:10 Prima che le vostre spine si sentano fatte un roveto, * così [Dio] nel suo sdegno li divorerà quasi ancora vivi.
57:11 Il giusto si rallegrerà nel vedere la vendetta; * laverà le sue mani nel sangue del peccatore:
57:12 E l'uomo dirà: C'è davvero una ricompensa per il giusto: * c'è davvero un Dio che giudica gli uomini sulla terra.

Il giusto appena svegliato, fin dal mattino rivolge il suo cuore al Signore, che lo ha creato, e prega alla presenza dell'Altissimo.
