Annos natus viginti sex a Deo vocátus ad ecclesiásticæ milítiæ nomen dandum, sæcularibus curis íllico nuntium remisit. Ac primo inter púeros latinæ linguæ rudimentis instructus, deínde in litteris et philosophicis ac theologicis disciplinis adeo profecit, ut vix acto quadriennio ad sacerdotium ex obediéntia promotus fúerit. Giovanni Leonardi, nacque a Diecimo, non lontano da Lucca, da pii ed onesti genitori. Già della infanzia, per amore della solitudine e della preghiera, mostrava qualcosa di grave e di maturo. A ventisei anni fu chiamato da Dio a dare il nome alla milizia ecclesiastica, e rinunziò all'instante agli interessi secolari. E prima istruito tra i fanciulli sui rudimenti della lingua latina, poi tanto avanzò nelle lettere e nelle discipline filosofiche e teologiche, che non ancora terminato il quadriennio fu promosso al sacerdozio per obbedienza. Subito venuto a contatto con nobili giovani di buona indole, avendoli con zelo esercitati alla perfezione della virtù, l'anno seguente fondò la Congregazione dei Chierici Regolari, che nominò dalla Madre di Dio, a causa dell'infiammato affetto della sua devozione verso di lei. Tramite la cura e lo zelo di questi si fece tanta mutazione degli animi, che poiché ardevano gli odi dei cittadini nella repubblica di Lucca, specialmente a causa dei perfidi artifici degli eretici, ed i costumi erano miserevoli, in breve tempo sembrava che la primitiva pietà dei Cristiani fosse rivissuta nel medesimo luogo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano
* e gli procurò eterna gloria.

A causa di tanto salutari opere Giovanni incorse in fierissime persecuzioni di uomini malvagi, che tentarono di disperdere in ogni modo la famiglia da poco costituita. Ma l'uomo di Dio, sopportando ogni cosa volentieri e con animo imperturbato, ottenuta dal Sommo Pontefice Gregorio X la conferma della sua Congregazione, conservò con costanza i frutti del suo lavoro apostolico. Nel comporre affari difficili molti vescovi si servirono di lui come consigliere ed aiutante, o anche lo stesso Pontefice Romano lo delegò a dirigere intricate liti, e riformare famiglie religiose. Fu accanto a san Giuseppe Colasanto, alla quasi collassata società del medesimo. Diede non superficiale attenzione agli affari dell'Ospedale dello Spirito Santo a Saxia, e nel perfezionamento delle monache oblate di Santa Francesca Romana.

Gravemente addolorato, che ancora così tanti popoli in remote regioni fossero senza la luce del Vangelo, era infiammato dal desiderio di migrare in quelle parti per diffondere il lume della vera religione. Ma avendo capito da san Filippo Neri, dal quale era detto vero riformatore, che egli e la sua Congregazione era destinata ad istruire i popoli dell'Italia, si adeguò alla volontà divina; tuttavia non trascurò affatto, nel caso potesse portare qualche aiuto agli infedeli, di provarci. Quindi fatto un piano con il piissimo presule Vives, costituì un gruppo di sacerdoti, per i quali il proposito fosse di formare adolescenti idonei, da mandare poi in regioni remote per propagare la fede. Pertanto meritatamente viene riconosciuto fondatore di quel famosissimo istituto, che ampliato ad opera dei sommi Pontefici, serve meravigliosamente a diffondere la fede cattolica per tutto il mondo. Scrissi diversi lavori di argomento sacro e morale, adattissimi a uomini di qualsiasi condizione. Infine mai venendo meno al sacro ministero, migrò al Signore in genere e cilicio, il giorno 9 Ottobre, nell'ano 1609, a 66 anni di età. Pio X Pontefice Massimo, lo innalzò agli onori dei Beati in quanto illustre di santità e per i miracoli. Pio XI, nell'anno 1938, nel giorno solenne di Pasqua, lo ascrisse tra i Santi.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia 17ma sui Vangeli.
Il Signore e Salvatore nostro, fratelli carissimi, ci avvisa ora con parole ed ora con opere. Infatti le sue opere sono precetti; e, quando fa qualche cosa, anche senza dir nulla, ci mostra quello che dobbiamo fare noi. Ecco, dunque, egli manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, perché sono due i precetti della carità, cioè l'amor di Dio e l'amor del prossimo, e bisogna essere almeno in due per poter praticare la carità. Infatti propriamente parlando, non si esercita la carità verso se stessi; ma l'amore, perché possa essere carità, deve avere per oggetto un altro.

Infatti il Signore segue i suoi predicatori; la predicazione infatti precede, e allora il Signore viene ad abitare nell'anima nostra, quando è preceduto dalle parole di coloro che ci esortano; ed è così che la verità è ricevuta dallo spirito.

Commemorazione: Ss. Dionisio Vescovo, Rustico ed Eleuterio, Martiri
Dionigi, Ateniese e membro dell'Areopago, era un personaggio versato in ogni sorta di scienze. Si racconta, che, ancora imbevuto degli errori del Paganesimo, osservando eclissarsi il sole, contro le leggi della natura, il giorno stesso che fu crocifisso Cristo Signore, esclamasse: O soffre il Dio della natura, o si scomporrà la macchina del mondo. Quando l'Apostolo Paolo, giunto ad Atene e condotto nell'Areopago, ebbe spiegata la dottrina che predicava, affermando che Cristo Signore era risuscitato, e che tutti i morti sarebbero pure risuscitati, Dionigi credette in Cristo insieme con molti altri. Pertanto fu battezzato dall'Apostolo, e stabilito vescovo della chiesa d'Atene. Venuto poi a Roma, il Papa san Clemente l'inviò a predicare il Vangelo nelle Gallie. Il prete Eleuterio e il diacono Rustico l'accompagnarono fino a Parigi; dove avendo convertito molti alla religione cristiana, fu perciò battuto con verghe insieme coi compagni per ordine del prefetto Fescennio. Ma continuando intrepido a predicare la fede cristiana, fu posto su di una graticola rovente, e torturato, unitamente ai compagni, con diversi altri supplizi. Dopo aver sofferto tutti tre coraggiosamente e con gioia questi diversi tormenti, Dionigi, che contava più di cent'anni, venne decapitato insieme cogli altri il 9 Ottobre. Di lui si racconta che, presa nelle sue mani la propria testa recisa, la portasse fino a due mila passi. Scrisse libri ammirabili e veramente celesti sui nomi divini, sulla gerarchia celeste ed ecclesiastica, di teologia mistica e alcuni altri.

John Leonard was born of pious and respectable parents in the town of Diecimo, not far from the city of Lucca. From very early boyhood he shewed himself mature and serious, with an inclination to solitude and prayer. When he was twenty-six years old God called him to enlist among the soldiers of the Church. John renounced immediately all his worldly interests. At first he had to study elementary Latin with little boys, but he soon advanced in a knowledge of literature, philosophy and theology. After a scant four years, at the command of his superior, he was ordained to the priesthood. Soon afterward he and a group of noble youths, alike inflamed with high ideals, earnestly set about attaining perfection in virtue. The following year they formed the Congregation of the Clerks Regular of the Mother of God, a name chosen because of their intense devotion to her. John and his companions laboured with such diligence in their care of souls, that before long a change of attitude was brought about. In the city state of Lucca, where through the perfidious wiles of the heretics, hateful passion turned fiercely among the citizens, where morals were corrupted, in a very short space of time the primitive piety of the Christians seemed to revive.

In his work for the salvation of souls John met most bitter insults from wicked men who tried in every way to destroy the newly gathered family. But the man of God, bearing all things cheerfully and serenely, defended pertinaciously the fruit of his apostolic labours by securing from the Supreme Pontiff, Gregory XIII, papal approbation of his Congregation. Many bishops about to undertake difficult enterprises sought his advice and aid. Even the Holy Father delegated to him the solution of intricate litigation and the reform of religious societies. He stood in support of Saint Joseph Calasanctius when his society was on the verge of collapse. Scarcely less arduous were the hours John devoted to the affairs of the Hospital of the Holy Spirit in the English section of Rome, and to those of the convent of Saint Frances of Rome.

Greatly saddened that so many peoples in far distant places were without the light of the Gospel, John burned with a desire to journey to those countries to spread the light of the true Faith. But when Saint Philip Neri, who called John a true reformer, showed him that he and his Congregation were destined to educate the Italian people, John acquiesced to the will of God. He did not, however, refrain so completely that he did not try to do some work for the infidels. He is therefore, very rightly credited along with the pioneer Vives with being the founder of the movement among the bishops to send well-qualified young men to distant, alien lands to propagate the faith. Wherefore he is very properly regarded as the author of that most illustrious institute which augments the work of the Sovereign Pontiffs and serves to spread the Catholic faith throughout the world. John wrote many works on theology and morality, well adapted to the men of that day. Finally, in sackcloth and ashes, lacking nothing in his sacred ministry, he passed to the Lord in Rome on the 9th day of October, 1609, at the age of sixty-six. He was so famous for sanctity and miracles that Pius IX, the Supreme Pontiff, named him on the calendar of the Blessed. In 1938 on the solemn Feast of Easter, Pius XI enrolled him among the Saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, our Lord and Saviour doth sometimes admonish us by words, and sometimes by works. Yea, His very works do themselves teach us for that which He doth silently His example still moveth us to copy. Behold how He sendeth forth His disciples to preach by two and two since there are two commandments to love, that is, a commandment to love God, and a commandment to love our neighbour and where there are not two, the one, being alone, hath not whereon to do the Lord's commandment. And no man can properly be said to love himself: for love tendeth outward toward our neighbour, if it be the love whereto the Gospel doth oblige us.

Commemoration of: Sts. Denis, Bishop, Rusticus et Eleutherius, Martyrs
Denis was an Athenian, one of the Judges of the Court of the Areopagus, and a man of varied and deep learning. There is a story concerning him that on the day when the Lord Christ was nailed to the Cross, and when he saw the unnatural eclipse of the sun, Denis said: Either the God of nature is suffering, or the frame-work of the world is breaking up. When the Apostle Paul came to Athens, and was taken and brought unto the Areopagus, and gave an account of the faith which he preached, affirming that Christ had risen from the dead, and that all the dead likewise are to live again, some mocked, and others said We will hear thee again of this matter. So Paul departed from among them. Howbeit, certain men clave unto him, and believed among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite. ~Acts xvii. 3234 Denis was baptized by the Apostle, and set over the Church of the Athenians. He came afterwards to Rome, and was sent by Pope Clement into Gaul, to preach the Gospel. There followed him to Paris one Rusticus a Priest, and Eleutherius a Deacon. He turned many to Christ, and was therefore hided with rods by command of Fescennius the Praefect, and, forasmuch as he still went on bravely preaching Christ, he was tortured with fire upon a grating, and put to diverse other torments, and his comrades likewise. They bore their torments bravely and cheerfully, and then Denis, being over an hundred years of age, and his two comrades with him, suffered by the axe upon the 9th day of October. This is that Denis concerning whom the old story is told that after his head was cut off he took it in his hands and walked two thousand paces, carrying it all the while. He was the author of some marvelous books, clear proofs of a mind fixed in heaven, upon The Names of God, upon The Orders in Heaven and in the Church, upon The Mystic Theology, and diverse others.

San Francésco Bòrgia, Sacerdote della Compagnia di Gesù e Confessore, il cui giorno natalizio è ricordato il trenta Settembre.
Presso Céuta, nella Mauritania Tingitàna, la passione di sette santi Martiri, dell'Ordine dei Minori, cioè Danièle, Samuèle, Angelo, Leone, Nicòla, Ugolino e Donno, i quali, essendo tutti, eccetto Donno, Sacerdoti, ivi, per la predicazione del Vangelo e per la confutazione della setta Maomettana, patirono dai Saraceni ingiurie, catene e flagelli, e finalmente decapitati conseguirono la palma del martirio.
A Colònia san Gereòne Martire, con altri trecentodiciotto, i quali per la vera religione, nella persecuzione di Massimiàno, offrirono pazientemente i loro colli alle spade.
Nel territorio della stessa città i santi Vittóre e Compagni Martiri.

On the morrow we keep the feast of holy Francis Borgia, General of the Society of Jesus, of whom mention is made upon the last day of September, and who is memorable for hardness of living, the gift of prayer, renunciation of the world, and the refusal of high places in the Church.
October 10th 2026, the 28th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At York, in England, (in the year 644,) holy Paulinus, Archbishop of that see. A disciple of the blessed Pope Gregory. Gregory sent him into England along with others to preach the Gospel, and he brought King Edwin and all his people to believe in Christ.
In the island of Crete, blessed Pinytus, noble among Bishops. He flourished as Bishop of Gnossus, under the Emperors Marcus Antoninus Verus and Lucius Aurelius Commodus, and hath left us in his writings a living image of himself as in a looking-glass.
At Cologne, the holy martyr Gereon, with three hundred and eighteen others, who patiently suffered beheading for true godliness' sake in the persecution under the Emperor Maximian.
