Francesco IV, duca di Candia, figlio di Giovanni Borgia e di Giovanna d'Aragona, nipote di Ferdinando il Cattolico, dopo aver trascorsa in seno alla famiglia un'infanzia ammirabile per innocenza e pietà, si mostrò ancora più ammirabile per la pratica esemplare delle virtù cristiane e per l'austerità della vita, prima alla corte dell'imperatore Carlo V, e poi nel governo della Catalogna. Nell'accompagnare la salma dell'imperatrice Isabella alla tomba di Granata, al vedere il di lei volto orribilmente trasformato, riflettendo alla vanità di tutto ciò ch'è mortale, fece voto di spogliarsi, appena gli fosse stato possibile, d'ogni cosa per servire unicamente al Re dei re. D'allora avanzò talmente nella virtù, da offrire in sé, in mezzo a un mondo di affari, il modello della perfezione religiosa, sì da essere chiamato un prodigio di principe.

Mortagli la moglie Eleonora del Castro, entrò nella Compagnia di Gesù, per .esservi più nascosto e per precludersi l'adito alle dignità coll'impegno sacro d'un voto; meritando d'esser seguito da parecchi principi nell'abbracciare un genere di vita più austero, e lo stesso Carlo V, abdicato all'impero, dichiarò di averlo avuto per ispiratore e guida. In questa professione di vita rigorosa, Francesco ridusse il suo corpo a una magrezza estrema con digiuni, catenelle di ferro, asprissimo cilizio, prolungate discipline a sangue, dormendo pochissimo, non risparmiandosi intanto nessuna fatica per vincersi per salvare le anime. Adorno pertanto di tante virtù, fu nominalo da sant'Ignazio prima commissario generale della compagnia in Spagna, e non molto dopo eletto, benché riluttante, terzo generale di tutta la compagnia. Nella qual carica si rese sommamente caro ai principi e ai sommi Pontefici colla sua prudenza e santità, e, oltre a fondare o sviluppare dovunque numerose case, inviò sudditi nel regno di Polonia, nelle isole dell'Oceano, nelle regioni del Messico e del Perù, e diresse altresì in altre contrade missionari che colla predicazione, coi sudori e col sangue propagarono la fede cattolica Romana.

Aveva sì bassa opinione di sé, da appropriarsi il nome di peccatore. Ricusò con invitta umiltà e fermezza la porpora cardinalizia offertagli più volte dai sommi Pontefici. Scopare la casa, mendicare il pane alle porte, servire i malati negli ospedali per disprezzo di sé e del mondo, egli faceva sue delizie, Tutti i giorni consacrava lunghe ore, ordinariamente otto e qualche volta dieci, alla meditazione delle cose celesti. Cento volte al giorno faceva la genuflessione per adorar Dio. Non omise mai di celebrare, e l'ardore divino che lo consumava si manifestava dallo splendore del suo volto, allorché offriva l'Ostia santa, e qualche volta anche mentre predicava. Un istinto celeste gli indicava dove si conservava il corpo santissimo di Cristo sotto i veli Eucaristici. Dato da san Pio come compagno al cardinale Aldobrandini, legato presso i principi cristiani per formare una lega contro i Turchi, egli intraprese per obbedienza l'arduo viaggio, nonostante l'affievolimento delle sue forze; e terminò felicemente il corso della sua vita a Roma, come aveva desiderato, a sessantadue anni di età, nel 1572 di nostra salute. S. Teresa, che ricorreva ai suoi consigli, lo chiamava un santo, e Gregorio XIII un fedele amministratore; infine, glorificato da numerosi e grandi miracoli, Clemente X l'iscrisse nel catalogo dei Santi.

Libro 3zo su Matt. cap. 19
Grande fiducia! Pietro era pescatore, non era mai stato ricco, si guadagnava il cibo col lavoro delle mani; e tuttavia dice con gran sicurezza: «Abbiamo abbandonato tutto». E siccome non basta solo abbandonare, aggiunge ciò che è perfetto: «E ti abbiamo seguito». Abbiamo fatto quello che hai comandato: che cosa ci darai dunque per ricompensa? E Gesù disse loro : «In verità vi dico: voi che mi avete seguito, quando nella rigenerazione il Figlio dell'uomo siederà sul trono della sua maestà, siederete anche voi su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù d'Israele». Non disse: Voi che avete lasciato ogni cosa, poiché questo lo fece anche il filosofo Crates, e molti altri disprezzarono le ricchezze, ma disse: «Voi che mi avete seguito»; il che è proprio degli apostoli e dei credenti.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.
℣. Ecco un uomo irreprensibile, vero cultore di Dio: si astenne da ogni malvagità e perseverò nella propria innocenza.

Lettura 8
«Nella rigenerazione, quando il Figlio dell'uomo si sarà assiso sul trono della sua maestà - quando anche i morti risorgeranno incorrotti dalla corruzione - siederete anche voi sui seggi dei giudici a condannare le dodici tribù Israele», perché, mentre voi credeste, esse non vollero credere. «E chi avrà lasciato la casa, o i fratelli, o le sorelle, o il padre, o la madre, o la moglie, o i figli, o i campi per amor del mio nome, riceverà il centuplo e possederà la vita eterna». Questo passo è in armonia con l'altra affermazione del Salvatore che dice: «Non sono venuto a portare la pace, ma la spada. Perché sono venuto a dividere il figlio dal padre suo, e la figlia dalla madre, e la nuora dalla suocera; e l'uomo avrà per nemici quelli di casa». Coloro dunque che, per la fede in Cristo e per la predicazione del Vangelo avranno disprezzato tutti gli affetti e le ricchezze e i piaceri del mondo, costoro riceveranno il centuplo e possederanno la vita eterna.

Da questa affermazione alcuni prendono occasione per sostenere che dopo la risurrezione ci sarà un periodo di mille anni nel quale, dicono, riceveremo il centuplo di tutto ciò che abbiamo lasciato e poi la vita eterna; non comprendendo che, se per tutte le altre cose la ricompensa è conveniente, per quanto riguarda la moglie, sarebbe una vergogna che colui che ne ha lasciata una per il Signore in futuro ne ricevesse cento. Questo dunque è il significato: chi avrà abbandonato per il Salvatore i beni carnali, ne riacquisterà di spirituali; e paragonare il valore di questi a quello dei primi, sarà come paragonare il numero cento ad un piccolo numero.

Francis, fourth Duke of Gandia, was the son of John Borgia, Duke of Gandia, and of Joan of Aragon, daughter of Alphonso, natural son to Ferdinand V. surnamed the Catholic, King of Aragon. He was born at Gandia, in the kingdom of Valencia, in the year of our Lord 1510. He passed his boyhood at home in great innocence and godliness, and was still more remarkable for his Christian graces and the hardness of his living, at the Court of the Emperor Charles V., and as Vice-Roy of Catalonia. (On May the 1st, 1539) died the Empress Isabella, and Francis, (as her master of the horse,) was commanded to attend her body to Granada, where it was to be buried. (At Granada the coffin was opened, in order that he might swear to the magistrates of the city that it was indeed the body of the late Empress,) and the sight of the awful change which death had made in her countenance so thrilled him with the thought of our mortality and corruption, that he bound himself by vow, as soon as he lawfully might, to give up all things, and to serve the King of kings only. From that time he so advanced in Christian graces, that his life might be called the miracle of princes, showing, in the midst of a vast mass of business, an image of perfection attained in a cloister. greatly endeared him to Princes and Popes, and besides founding or enlarging very many houses in diverse places, he sent brethren into the kingdom of Poland, into the islands of the Ocean, and into the provinces of Mexico and Peru, and into other lands also Apostolic men who spread the Roman Catholic faith by their preaching, their sweat, and their blood.

His wife, Eleanora de Castro, died on the 27th of March, 1546, and in 1551 he entered the Society of Jesus, that therein he might hide himself more safely, and bar by the obligation of a vow the path to dignities. He was the worthy leader of many princes who have embraced a life of hardship, and Charles V. himself when he resigned the Empire did not deny that he had been moved and shown the way by Francis. In his struggle after austerity Francis, by fasting, by iron chains, by the roughest of hair -cloth, by long and bloody flagellations, and by denying himself any but very little sleep, reduced his body to the last degree, but would still spare no toil to overcome himself and to save souls. Thus full of ghostly strength, he was appointed by holy Ignatius, ~in the year 1554, Commissary-General of the Society in Spain, Portugal, and the Indies, and on the 2nd of July, 1565, notwithstanding all the precautions he could take to prevent it, he was chosen by the general Congregation of the Society to be General, being the third who held that office. In this position his wisdom and holiness of life

He thought so little of himself that he gave himself the nickname of Francis the sinner. By the Popes he was oftentimes offered the dignity of Cardinal of the Roman Church, but the lowly firmness with which he refused it could never be overcome. In his cheap esteem of the world and of himself his chief pleasures were to clean the house, to beg for food from door to door, and to wait upon the sick in hospitals. He spent many hours every day, oftentimes eight and sometimes ten, in prayer and meditation. An hundred times every day he worshipped God upon his knees. He never missed the opportunity of offering the Holy Liturgy, and the fire from God which burnt within him sometimes shone forth in his countenance when he was lifting the Sacred Host, or preaching. By an inward power given him from God he could tell where the most Holy Body of Christ, under the Eucharistic veils, was kept. In 1570, the year before the victory of Lepanto, the blessed Pius V. sent Francis with the Cardinal Alexandrini on an embassy (into France, Spain, and Portugal,) to unite the Christian Princes against Turkey. His vital strength was then nearly worn out, but, through obedience, he undertook the toil of the journey. He became much worse during the travelling, and on his return brought to a blessed end at Rome, as had been his desire, the pilgrimage of this life, (a little before midnight between the last day of September and the first of October,) in the sixty-second year of his own life, and that of salvation 1572. Holy Teresa, who used his advice, called him an holy man, and Gregory XIII., a faithful servant. He was famous for many and great signs and wonders, and Clement X. at last numbered him among the Saints.
