Serm. 1 sulla Natività del Signore
Si sceglie una vergine della famiglia reale di David perché sia feconda di un figlio santo. Poté così concepire con la mente prima ancora che con il corpo. Affinché non si spaventasse di quel colloquio del tutto straordinario, essendo completamente all'oscuro del piano di Dio, venne istruita dall'incontro con l'angelo su ciò che lo Spirito Santo avrebbe compiuto in lei. Inoltre, con questo preavviso, la prossima Madre di Dio non sarebbe stata danneggiata nel suo stesso riserbo. Come avrebbe potuto dubitare del nuovo modo di concepire, quando avesse saputo che la potenza di Dio lo avrebbe avvalorato? La sua fede, già salda, viene corroborata dalla conferma di un miracolo già avvenuto. Infatti ad Elisabetta è donata una fecondità insperata; e così si vuol mostrare a Maria che colui che aveva reso feconda una donna sterile, avrebbe certamente reso feconda anche una vergine. Or dunque il Verbo Figlio di Dio, che «in principio era presso Dio, per mezzo del quale fu fatta ogni cosa e senza del quale nulla fu fatto», diventò uomo per liberare l'uomo dalla morte eterna.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Serm. 2 sulla Natività del Signore
Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, sceso dal cielo, entra umile in questo mondo, e inoltre, pur non abbandonando la gloria del Padre, tuttavia nasce, attraverso un nuovo tipo di generazione, con un'altra natura. Altra natura, perché, pur restando invisibile per la natura divina, diventò visibile nella nostra natura: lui che era infinito, volle essere contenuto nello spazio, lui che resta eterno cominciò a vivere nel tempo. Nacque attraverso un nuovo tipo di generazione: infatti fu concepito da una vergine, nacque da una vergine, il suo concepimento non ebbe il concorso della passione di un padre e non violò la verginità della madre: era opportuno che colui che veniva a salvare gli uomini avesse questo tipo di nascita perché, pur dovendo prendere la natura dell'uomo doveva tuttavia evitare le brutture della carne. Quindi ha una origine differente, ma una natura uguale agli altri uomini. La fede ci dice che non subì nascendo ciò che normalmente subiamo noi; infatti la potenza di Dio fece in modo che Maria concepisse da vergine, partorisse da vergine e poi restasse vergine.

℟. Sei una figlia benedetta dal Signore, poiché per te siamo stati resi partecipi del frutto della vita.

Dagli Atti del papa Pio XI

Nell'armo 1931, con plauso di tutto il mondo cattolico, si celebrarono le feste solenni del XV centenario da quando nel concilio di Efeso, contro l'eresia di Nestorio, la beata vergine Maria, da cui è nato Gesù, fu, dai padri conciliari, con a capo papa Celestino, proclamata Madre di Dio. Il sommo pontefice Pio XI volle, a testimonianza imperitura della sua pietà, che di tale fatto restasse perenne memoria. Pertanto curò con sua munificenza che l'insigne monumento della proclamazione efesina che già esisteva nell'urbe, cioè l'arco trionfale della basilica di santa Maria Maggiore sull'Esquilino, ornato dal suo predecessore Sisto III con meraviglioso mosaico, guastato dal tempo, fosse restaurato insieme con l'ala trasversale della basilica. Descritti poi con lettera enciclica i lineamenti genuini del concilio ecumenico efesino, spiegò piamente e ampiamente il privilegio ineffabile della divina maternità della beata vergine Maria, affinché la dottrina di un mistero così grande s'imprimesse profondamente nell'anima dei fedeli. Inoltre propose la benedetta fra tutte le donne, Maria madre di Dio e la famiglia di Nazaret quale unico nobilissimo esempio da imitare sia per la dignità e santità del casto matrimonio, sia per la educazione santa da darsi alla gioventù. Infine, affinché non mancasse neppure il ricordo liturgico, ordinò che la festa della divina maternità della beata vergine Maria con messa e ufficio proprio fosse celebrata ogni anno con rito di seconda classe il giorno 11 ottobre.

Omelia 1 sulla Lode della Vergine e Madre
Maria chiamò «figlio» Iddio che è Signore degli angeli. Ella dice: «Figlio, perché ti sei comportato in questo modo?». Quale angelo oserebbe parlare così? Per gli angeli è già molto essere stati fatti e nominati angeli per dono, mentre erano soltanto spiriti per natura. Così dice David: «Egli trasforma gli spiriti in suoi angeli». Maria invece ha la coscienza di esser madre e perciò con molta tranquillità chiama «figlio» quel Dio che gli angeli servono con grande rispetto. Dio stesso non rifiuta di esser chiamato ciò che non rifiutò di diventare. Poco dopo l'evangelista soggiunge: «Era sottomesso a loro». Chi? A chi? La lettura del santo Vangelo, che ora, o fratelli, avete udito, non ha bisogno di spiegazione: ma affinché non sembri che la passiamo sotto silenzio, diciamone qualche cosa piuttosto a mo' di esortazione che di spiegazione. Noi non vediamo che una sola questione che domanda d'essere esaminata, cioè perché colui ch'era venuto per domandare la guarigione del suo figlio udì dirsi: «Voialtri se non vedete miracoli e prodigi, non credete» Joann. 4,48. Colui che implorava la guarigione del suo figlio, certo credeva; perché se non avesse creduto che lui era il Salvatore, non gli avrebbe domandato questa guarigione. Perché dunque gli si risponde: «Voialtri se non vedete miracoli e prodigi, non credete»Joann. 4,47: mentre egli avea creduto prima di vedere dei miracoli?

The future Mother of God knew what was to be wrought in her by the Holy Ghost, and that her modesty was absolutely safe. For why should she, unto whom was promised all sufficient strength through the power of the Highest, have felt hopeless merely because of the unexampled character of such a conception? She believeth, and her belief is confirmed by the attestation of a miracle which hath already been wrought. The fruitfulness of Elizabeth, before unhoped for, is brought forward that she might not doubt that he who had given conception unto her that was barren, would give the same unto her that was Virgin. And so the Word of God, the Son of God, who was in the beginning with God, by whom all things were made, and without whom was not anything made that was made, to deliver man from eternal death, was made man.

He cometh after a new order, in that he who is unseen among his own, was seen among us; the Incomprehensible was fain to be comprehended, and he that is from everlasting to everlasting began to be in time. He was the Offspring of a new birth; conceived of a maiden, without the passion of any fleshly father, without any breach of his Mother's virginity, since such a birth beseemed the coming Saviour of mankind, who was to have in him the nature of man's being, and to be free of any defilement of man's flesh. Though he sprung not as we spring, yet is his nature as our nature; we believe that he is free from the use and custom of men; but it was the power of God which wrought that a maiden should conceive, that a maiden should bring forth, and yet abide a maiden still.

From the Acts of Pope Pius XI

In the year 1931, amid the applause of the whole Catholic world, solemn rites were celebrated to mark the completion of the fifteen centuries which had elapsed since the Council of Ephesus, moving against the Nestorian heresy, had acclaimed the blessed Virgin Mary, of whom Jesus was born, as Mother of God. This acclamation had been made by the Fathers of the Church under the leadership of Pope Celestine. Pius XI, as Supreme Pontiff, wished to commemorate the notable event and to give lasting proof of his devotion to Mary. Now there had existed for many years in Rome a grand memorial to the proclamation of Ephesus, the triumphal arch in the basilica of Saint Mary Major on the Esquiline Hill. This monument had already been adorned by a previous pontiff, Sixtus III, with mosaics of marvelous workmanship, now falling to pieces from the decay of the passing ages. Pius XI, therefore, out of his own munificence, caused these to be restored most exquisitely and with them the transept of the basilica. In an Encyclical Letter Pius set forth also the true history of the Council of Ephesus, and expounded fervently and at great length the doctrine of the prerogatives of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of God. He did this that the doctrine of this lofty mystery might sink more deeply into the hearts of the faithful. In it he set forth Mary, the Mother of God, blessed among women, and the most holy Family of Nazareth as the exemplars to be followed above all others, as models of the dignity and holiness of chaste wedlock, as patterns of the holy education to be given youth. Finally that no liturgical detail be lacking, he decreed that the feast of the Divine Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary be celebrated annually on the 11th day of October by the universal Church with a proper Mass and Office under the rite of a double of the second class.

Indeed, there seemeth to me to be but one point which calleth for explanation, and that point is this Wherefore was it that when the nobleman went unto the Lord, and besought Him that He would come down and heal his son, Jesus said unto him: “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.” The very fact that he had come to beseech Christ to heal his son, putteth it beyond all doubt that this nobleman believed if he had not believed Him to be a Saviour, he would not have asked Him to save his son. Wherefore then said Jesus unto him: “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe,” since he was one who had not seen, and yet had believed?

A Roma i santi Martiri Evàgrio, Prisciàno e Compagni.
In Africa i quattromilanovecentosessantasei santi Confessori e Martiri, nella persecuzione dei Vàndali, sotto Unnerico, Re Ariano. Tra essi alcuni erano Vescovi delle Chiese di Dio, altri Preti e Diaconi, ai quali si unì la moltitudine dei popoli fedeli: per la difesa della verità cattolica furono esiliati in un orribile deserto; moltissimi di loro, mentre erano crudelmente condotti dai Mori, con le punte delle aste furono spinti a correre e pesti con sassi; altri, coi piedi legati, come cadaveri vennero trascinati per luoghi sassosi ed aspri e straziati in tutte le membra; da ultimo, diversamente tormentati, celebrarono il martirio. Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Wilfred, Bishop of York.
October 12th 2026, the 1st day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy martyrs Evagrius, Priscian, and their Companions.
At Ravenna, on the Laurentine Way, (in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian,) the holy martyr Edistius.
In Lycia, under the same Emperor Diocletian, the holy martyr Domnina.
In Africa are commemorated four thousand nine hundred and sixty-six holy martyrs and Confessors in the Vandal persecution under the Arian King Hunneric. Some of these were Bishops of the Churches of God, and some of them Priests and Deacons, but with them were joined multitudes of the other faithful. For defending the Catholic truth they were driven into exile in the terrible desert many of them were cruelly taken by the Moors, goaded to run at the point of the spear, and beaten with stones others had their feet tied together, and were dragged like corpses through hard and sharp places, until all their limbs were mangled and then were tortured to death in diverse ways. Pre-eminent among them were the Bishops Felix and Cyprian.
At Celeia, in Pannonia, (in the fourth century,) holy Maximilian, Bishop (of Lorch.)
At Milan, (in the third century,) the holy Bishop Monas. During the discussion as to the choosing of a Bishop there, a light from heaven shone upon him, and through that wondrous sign he was made Bishop of that church.

In Syria, the holy Priest and Confessor Eustace.
At Ascoli, in the March of Ancona, (in the year 1604,) the holy Confessor Seraphim, of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins, who was marked by holiness of life and by lowliness, and whose name the Supreme Pontiff Clement XIII enrolled with those of the Saints.
