Nam, cum sanctórum Mártyrum acta perlegeret, adeo in ejus meditatióne Sancti Spíritus ignis exársit, ut, domo aufúgiens, in Africam trajiceret, ubi vitam pro glória Jesu Christi et animárum salúte profúnderet. A patruo revocata, ardens martyrii desidérium eleemosynis aliisque piis opéribus compensávit, jugibus lácrimis deplorans optimam sibi sortem fuísse præreptam. Lettura 4
La Vergine Teresa nacque ad Avila in Spagna da genitori illustri per sangue e pietà. Nutrita da essi col latte nel timor di Dio, fin dalla più tenera età diede meraviglioso presagio della futura santità. Perché, leggendo gli atti dei santi Martiri, fu così accesa, nel meditarli, dal fuoco dello Spirito Santo, che, fuggita di casa, voleva passare in Africa per spendervi la vita a gloria di Gesù Cristo e alla salvezza delle anime. Ricondotta a casa dallo zio, compensò con elemosine e altre opere di pietà l'ardente desiderio del martirio, deplorando con molte lacrime d'essere stata sottratta a sorte tanto felice. Morta la madre, pregò la beatissima Vergine di farle da madre, e il pio voto venne esaudito; perché 1a Madre di Dio la protesse sempre come sua figlia. A venti anni, entrò fra le religiose di santa Maria dei monte Carmelo. Là, afflitta per diciott'anni da gravissime malattie e da varie tentazioni, rimase intrepida sotto le armi della penitenza cristiana, senza neppure una di quelle consolazioni celesti, onde la santità suole abbondare anche sulla terra.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Per la verità, la mansuetudine e la giustizia,
* la tua destra ti guiderà mirabilmente.

Lettura 5
Arricchita di virtù angeliche, lavorò con sollecita carità non solo alla propria salvezza, ma a quella altresì di tutti. Quindi, ispirata da Dio e coll'approvazione di Pio IV, propose, prima alle donne e poi agli uomini, la osservanza della regola, più austera, degli antichi Carmelitani. Il Signore onnipotente e misericordioso si degnò di benedire questa impresa; dacché questa vergine, povera e priva di ogni assistenza umana, anzi agendo spesso contrari gli stessi principi del secolo, riuscì a fondare trentadue monasteri. Deplorava con continue lacrime la cecità degli infedeli e degli eretici, e, affin di placare la collera e la vendetta divina, offriva a Dio per la loro salvezza i tormenti volontari che infliggeva al proprio corpo. L'anima sua era sì accesa della fiamma dell'amor divino, che meritò di vedere un Angelo trapassarle il cuore con un dardo infuocato, e di udirsi dire da Gesù Cristo presentandole la mano: Quindi innanzi brucerai di zelo per la mia gloria come una vera sposa. Per suo consiglio emise il voto eroico di fare sempre quello che avesse conosciuto più perfetto. Scrisse più opere piene di celeste sapienza, sommamente adatte ad eccitare lo spirito dei fedeli al desiderio della patria del cielo.

Ma mentre dava continui esempi di virtù, ardeva di sì vivo desiderio di castigare il suo corpo, che nonostante le consigliassero diversamente le malattie ond'era afflitta, non cessava punto di tormentarlo con cilizi, catenelle, fascetti di ortiche e altre asprissime flagellazioni, ravvolgendosi perfino qualche volta tra le spine, solendo ripetere a Dio: Signore, o patire o morire; immaginandosi sempre di perire di morte miserabilissima, finché era tenuta lontana dalla fonte celeste della vita eterna. Ebbe in alto grado il dono di profezia, e il Signore la ricolmava de' suoi celesti favori con tanta larghezza, da pregarlo spesso con ardenti esclamazioni di limitare i suoi benefizi e di non permettere che un sì pronto oblio cancellasse il ricordo delle sue colpe. Più dunque per un eccesso di amor divino che per la violenza del male allettata in Alba di Tormes, avendo predetto il giorno della sua morte, munita dei sacramenti della Chiesa, esortati i figli alla pace, carità e regolare osservanza, rese a Dio l'anima sua purissima, sotto forma d'una colomba a sessantasette anni, nell'anno 1582, il 15 Ottobre, secondo la riforma del Calendario Romano. Morente, le apparve Gesù Cristo fra schiere d'Angeli; e un albero secco, presso la cella, fiorì all'istante. Il suo corpo, rimasto incorrotto fino ad oggi, spande un liquore odoroso, ed è oggetto di pia venerazione. Glorificata da miracoli prima e dopo morte, Gregorio XV l'annoverò fra i Santi.

Omelia 12 sui Vangeli.
Spesso vi raccomando, fratelli carissimi, di fuggire le opere cattive e di evitare la corruzione di questo mondo, ma quest'oggi la lettura del santo Vangelo mi costringe a dirvi di stare molto attenti a non perdere il merito delle vostre buone opere, a non cercare, nel bene che fate, il favore o la stima degli uomini, ad impedire
che si insinui in voi il desiderio della lode e ad agire in modo che, quanto appare di fuori, non sia dentro vuoto di ricompensa. Il Redentore infatti ci parla di dieci vergini, e le dice tutte vergini; eppure non tutte hanno meritato di essere ammesse al soggiorno della beatitudine, perché alcune di esse, mentre cercavano una gloria esteriore della loro verginità, non si curarono di mettere dell'olio nelle loro lampade.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questa è una vergine saggia, che il Signore trovò vigilante: lei, con le lampade, prese con sé anche l'olio.

Ma prima dobbiamo chiederci che cosa sia il regno dei cieli, o perché lo si paragoni a dieci vergini, ed anche quali vengano dette vergini prudenti e quali vergini stolte. Mentre infatti è certo che nessun reprobo entrerà nel regno dei cieli, perché questo viene paragonato anche a delle vergini stolte? Dobbiamo sapere che spesso nel linguaggio sacro la Chiesa del tempo presente viene chiamata regno dei cieli. Onde altrove il Signore dice: «Il Figlio dell'uomo manderà i suoi angeli, e toglieranno dal suo regno tutti gli scandali». Certamente in quel regno di beatitudine, dove c'è la suprema pace, non si potranno trovare scandali da togliere.

Ciascuno vive in un corpo che ha cinque sensi; il numero cinque poi, raddoppiato, dà dieci. E, poiché la moltitudine dei fedeli comprende ambedue i sessi, la santa Chiesa si dice simile a dieci vergini. E poiché in essa i cattivi si trovano mescolati coi buoni e i reprobi con gli eletti, giustamente viene paragonata a delle vergini prudenti ed anche a delle vergini stolte. Infatti ci sono molti che vivono nella continenza, che si guardano dagli appetiti esteriori, e dalla speranza sono portati ai beni interiori, che mortificano la propria carne, e anelano alla patria celeste con tutta la forza del loro desiderio, agognano i premi eterni, e non vogliono ricevere lodi umane per le loro fatiche. Questi certamente non ripongono la loro gloria nelle parole degli uomini, ma la nascondono nella loro coscienza. E ci sono poi molti che affliggono il loro corpo con l'astinenza, ma per questa stessa loro astinenza cercano gli applausi degli uomini.

The virgin Theresa was the daughter of a father and mother, equally honourable on account of their birth and of their godliness, (and was born) at Avila (in the kingdom of Old Castile) in Spain, on the 28th day of March, in the year of our Lord 1515. She was brought up from the dawn of her life in the fear of God, and when still only seven years old she gave a startling fore-cast of the holy earnestness of her later years. The reading of the acts of the holy martyrs so inflamed and excited her imagination, that she ran away from her father's house, with the design of going to Morocco and the hope there to lay down her life for the glory of Christ Jesus and the salvation of souls. (Upon the bridge over the Adaja, near the town,) she was met by an uncle and brought back to her mother, and was fain to slake her thirst for martyrdom by giving to the poor all the alms she could, and by other godly exercises, though still ever bewailing with tears that the highest prize had been snatched from her. (In the twelfth year of her age,) her mother died, and she besought the Most Blessed Virgin to be a mother to her in her stead. This she gained; thenceforth she lived always as a daughter under the shelter of the Mother of God. In the twentieth year of her age she withdrew herself among the nuns of St. Mary of Mount Carmel. There she dwelt for two-and-twenty years, tormented by grievous sicknesses and diverse temptations, and so bravely served her time in the hardest ranks of Christ's army, starved even of that comforting knowledge of God's reconciled love, wherein His holy children are so commonly used even upon earth to rejoice.

Strengthened in the graces of an angel, the wideness of her love embraced in its tender care the salvation of other souls as well as of her own. To this end, under the blessing of God, and the approbation of Pius IV., she set, first before women and then before men, the observance of the stern Rule of the Old Carmelites. The blessing of the Almighty and merciful Lord did indeed rest most evidently upon this design. This penniless virgin, helped by no man, and in the teeth of many that were great in this world, was enabled to build two-and-thirty houses. The darkness of unbelievers and misbelievers drew from her unceasing tears, and she willingly gave up her own body to God to be tortured, to soften the fury of His indignation against them. His own love so blazed in her heart that she attained to see an Angel run her through with a fiery spear, and Christ Himself take her by the hand, and to hear Him say Henceforth thou shalt love Mine honour as a wife indeed. At His inspiration she took the extremely difficult vow to do always that which should seem to her to be most perfect. Reading 6
Earnest as were the examples of graces which she had shown, and grievous as was the state of her body, afflicted by disease, she still burnt with the desire of tormenting it. She tortured it with sackcloth, chains of spikes, handfuls of nettles, and heavy scourging. She rolled herself sometimes among thorns, and was used to cry to God “Lord! to suffer or to die.” As long as she remained exiled from the heavenly Fountain of eternal life, her life was to her a lingering death. She was eminent for the gift of prophecy, and God did indeed so pour forth His bounties upon her, that she often cried to Him in entreaty not to bless her so as to make her forget her sins. It was worn out rather by the fever of her love than by the wasting of disease that she sank upon her deathbed at Alba. She foretold the day of her own death, received the Sacraments of the Church, and exhorted her disciples to peace, love, and strictness in observing the Rule, and then her soul, like a pure dove, winged its flight to rest with God, on the 15th day of October in the year 1582, being then 67 years of age. At her death she had a vision of Christ Jesus surrounded by Angels. A dead tree hard by the cell instantly broke into foliage. Her body is untouched by corruption even unto this day, and lieth in a sort of perfumed oil, regarded with godly reverence. She was famous for miracles both before and after her death, and was numbered by Gregory XV. among the Saints.

Dearly beloved brethren oftentimes do I warn you to fly corrupt conversation, and to keep yourselves unspotted from the world. But the portion which is this day read from the Holy Gospel doth oblige me to say that even to these good things which ye do, ye must needs take all careful heed. Look ye well to it, that, when ye work righteousness, ye do it not as seeking the praise and admiration of men, for if the lust of praise do once creep in, that which seemeth so fair without, loseth its reward within. Behold how the Redeemer speaketh of these ten virgins. He calleth them all virgins, yet entered not all of them into the door of blessedness, for there were some of them who sought outwardly the honour of virginity, but would take no oil within their vessels with their lamps.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is one of those wise virgins, whom the Lord found watching, for when she took her lamp, she took oil with her.

First of all, it is for us to ask What is the kingdom of Heaven? In that kingdom of Blessedness, wherein peace shall have her perfect reign, there shall be nothing found that offendeth for the angels to gather out.

There are many who have self-control, which do keep themselves from lusting after things outward, whose hope beareth them to things inward, who chastise the flesh, who long with intense home-sickness for their Fatherland which is in heaven, who seek an eternal reward, and who will not to receive for their labours the praise of men. These are they who reckon their glory, not in the mouths of men, but in the testimony of their own conscience. Santa Edvige Vedova, Duchessa di Polònia, la quale si addormentò nel Signore il giorno precedente.

Nello stesso luogo i santi Martiniàno e Saturiàno, con due loro fratelli, i quali, al tempo della persecuzione dei Vàndali, sotto il Re Ariano Genserico, essendo schiavi di un certo Vàndalo, ed essendo stati convertiti alla fede di Cristo da santa Màssima Vergine, schiava del medesimo, tutti dal loro padrone eretico, per la costanza nella fede cattolica, furono prima percossi con nodosi bastoni e lacerati fino all'ossa. Ma, soffrendo questi tormenti per molto tempo, e non dimeno il giorno seguente comparendo sempre sani, finalmente furono mandati in esilio, dove, avendo convertito molti barbari alla fede di Cristo, ed avendo ottenuto dal Romano Pontefice un Prete ed altri ministri, che li battezzassero, da ultimo, legati per i piedi dietro a carri che correvano, fra gli spineti delle selve furono egualmente fatti morire; Màssima poi, dopo aver superato molti combattimenti, liberata col divino aiuto, si riposò con santa fine in un monastero. Madre di molte Vergini.

October 16th 2026, the 5th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

In Africa, two hundred and seventy holy martyrs, all crowned alike.
There also the holy martyrs Martinian and Saturian, and two of their brethren. They were slaves of a certain Vandal, and were brought to believe in Christ by the holy Virgin Maxima, who was their fellow-slave.
In the persecution under the Arian king, Genseric, on account of their steadfastness in the Catholic faith, they were first beaten to the very bone with knotty cudgels, but for as much as they were so treated of a long while, and were always found sound and well the next day, they were banished. In their banishment they turned many barbarians to believe in Christ, and obtained from the Roman Pontiff a priest and other ministers to baptize them wherefore at last they were dragged to death through thorny places in the woods, being fastened by the feet behind chariots. Maxima overcame in many contendings,
but God set her at liberty, and she became the mother of many virgins in a monastery, and fell asleep in an holy death.

O Dio, nostra salvezza, ascoltaci e fa' che, mentre godiamo della festa della beata Teresa, vergine tua, siamo nutriti del cibo della sua celeste dottrina ed educati nel sentimento di una pia devozione.
Per il nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, tuo Figlio, che è Dio, e vive e regna con te, in unità con lo Spirito Santo, per tutti i secoli dei secoli.

Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano, rimetti a noi i nostri debiti, come noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori e non ci indurre in tentazione, ma liberaci dal male. Amen.
