Edvige, di famiglia reale, ma ancora più illustre per la innocenza della vita, era zia di sant'Elisabetta regina d'Ungheria, e figlia di Bertoldo e d'Agnese marchesi di Moravia, e fin dalla prima età fece conoscere la saggezza del suo animo. Infatti bambina s'astenne da ogni puerilità, e sposata a dodici anni a Enrico duca di Polonia, adempì santamente i doveri di fedele sposa, ed allevò nel timor di Dio i figli che n' ebbe. Ma per dedicarsi meglio a Dio, indusse il marito a consentire e a impegnarsi con voto, come lei, a osservare la continenza. Mortole il marito, ella, dopo reiterate preghiere e dietro ispirazione divina, prese generosamente l'abito Cisterciense nel monastero di Trebnitz; e là, intenta alla contemplazione, e assistendo con assiduità dal levar del sole fino a mezzogiorno agli Uffici divini e alla celebrazione delle Messe si mostrò coraggiosa nel disprezzare l'antico nemico del genere umano.

Non volle più parlare né sentir parlare di cose del secolo, purché non si riferissero alla gloria di Dio o alla salute delle anime. Fu tale la sua prudenza nell'operare, che né trasmodava nel modo né errava nell'ordine da eseguire, del resto era affabile e dolce col prossimo. Coi digiuni, veglie, vesti austere e rozze onde affliggeva il suo corpo, trionfò grandemente di se; perciò fiorirono in lei le più sublimi virtù cristiane, e divenne un modello di pietà religiosa per la gravità de' suoi consigli, il candore e la serenità del suo animo. Fu ammirabile la sua pazienza e fortezza d'animo, principalmente nella morte de suo figlio Enrico, duca di Slesia, che amava teneramente, ucciso in una guerra contro i Tartari; piuttosto che versar lacrime su questo figlio, ne ringraziò Dio. I miracoli accrebbero la sua gloria; che, chiamata, rese la vita a un fanciullo caduto nell'acqua, impigliato fra le ruote d'un Mulino e quasi stritolato; e ne fece ancora altri, che, canonicamente provati, indussero Clemente IV ad iscriverla nel novero dei Santi, e a concedere che la Polonia, la quale l'onora con venerazione particolare come patrona, ne celebrasse la festa il 15 Ottobre. In seguito Innocenzo XI la estese a tutta la Chiesa, fissandola al giorno 17. (Pio XI l'ha portata al 16).

Il regno dei cieli, fratelli carissimi, si dice simile a cose terrene, affinché l'anima si elevi da ciò che conosce a ciò che non conosce affatto, così che dall'esempio delle cose visibili si sollevi alle invisibili, e come incitata da ciò che ha appreso, s'infiammi a tal punto da imparare ad amare, per mezzo dell'affetto per un bene conosciuto, anche beni sconosciuti. Ecco dunque che il regno dei cieli si paragona ad un tesoro nascosto in un campo. L uomo che l'ha trovato, lo tiene nascosto e, per la gioia di possederlo, va a vendere tutto ciò che possiede e compra quel campo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Apre la sua bocca alla sapienza e la legge della bontà è sulla sua lingua. Sorveglia l'andamento della sua casa

Ed in ciò si deve anche notare che il tesoro trovato viene nascosto perché sia conservato: poiché non riuscirà a difendere dagli spiriti maligni l'ardore del desiderio che sente per il cielo, colui che non lo sottrae alle umane lodi. Infatti nella vita presente ci troviamo come in una via, lungo la quale ci dirigiamo alla patria. Gli spiriti maligni ci tendono insidie lungo la strada, come ladruncoli. Portare dunque pubblicamente un tesoro per via è come desiderare di essere derubati. Ora io dico questo, non perché il prossimo non veda le nostre opere buone, poiché sta scritto: «Vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli»; ma perché non cerchiamo lodi dall'esterno per quello che facciamo. L'opera quindi sia pure pubblica, ma rimanga occulta l'intenzione; affinché noi possiamo dare al prossimo l'esempio di un'opera buona, e tuttavia con l'intenzione, per la quale cerchiamo di piacere soltanto a Dio, desideriamo sempre il segreto.

Hedwiga, a Princess, in whom the splendour of her family was outshone by the radiant innocency of her life, was the daughter of Bertold and Agnes, Marquess and Marchioness of Moravia, and sister to Gertrude, wife of Andrew, King of Hungary, and mother of the holy Elizabeth of Thuringia. From her earliest childhood she was a very grave child, and had already done with childish things when, at twelve years of age, she was given in marriage by her father and mother to Henry, Grand Prince of Poland. In marriage she kept the bed in all holiness undefined, and brought up in the fear of God the children that were therein begotten of her. (After the birth of her sixth child,) she was fain to give herself more continually to God, and induced her husband to agree to a mutual vow of separation of bed-fellowship. After his death in 1238, by the inspiration of God, whom she besought in unceasing prayer, she clad herself for godliness' sake in the habit of a Cistercian nun in the monastery (which had been finished) at Trebnitz in 1219. She continued absorbed in God. She remained engaged in the Divine Office and hearing Masses from sunrise till noon, and trod mightily under foot the old enemy of man.

She could not bear to hear talk of worldly things, unless they had to do with the things of God or the saving of souls. She was very wise in business, not doing too much, nor unseasonably, and withal courteous and gentle toward all men. She got a great victory over herself by maltreating her flesh with fasting, watching, and rough clothing. She was an example of the higher Christian graces and of a godly nun, by the wisdom of her counsels, and the straightforwardness and peacefulness of her mind. It was her use to rank herself after all others, and cheerfully to undertake lower offices than those of the other nuns. She ministered to the poor even upon her knees, and washed and kissed the feet of lepers, having such command over herself as not to recoil from their sores oozing with matter.

Her long-suffering and endurance were very marvellous, especially when her son Henry, Duke of Silesia, to whom she bore a mother's love, was killed by the Tartars in 1241. His death drew from her rather thanksgiving to God than tears for him. She died upon the 15th day of October, in the year 1243. She was famous for miracles. One while, being called on, she restored to life a boy who had fallen into the water, been dashed against the wheels of a mill, and wholly crushed. This and the like being duly proved, Clement IV. numbered her name among those of the Saints, and allowed her Feastday to be kept in Poland, in which country, being Patroness, she hath most honour, upon the 15th of October; which permission was given to the whole Church by Innocent XI. (rubrica tridentina) for the 17th day of the same month.

Dearly beloved brethren, the kingdom of heaven is likened unto the things of earth, to the end that by the mean of things which we know, our mind may rise to the contemplation of the things which we know not by the example of things which are seen, may fix her gaze on things which are not seen by the touch of things which she useth, may be warmed towards the things which she useth not; by things which she knoweth and loveth, to love also the things which she knoweth not. For, behold, “the kingdom of heaven is likened unto treasure hid in a field, the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and, for joy thereof, goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field.”
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household

And herein we must remark that the treasure, when once it hath been found, is hidden to keep it safe. He whose intimate yearnings after God are not hidden from the praise of men, is open thereby to the attacks of evil spirits. In this life we are, as it were, journeying homewards on a road beset by evil spirits who are like highwaymen. He therefore inviteth robbery who carrieth his treasure ostentatiously. Doubtless our neighbour should be able to see our good works, as it is written: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” But this is not to be understood to mean that we are to seek the praise of men by what we do. Rather, let us in such wise work in the open that the inner intention of devotion is not advertised. So we shall give an example to our neighbour, and yet keep hidden, except from the sight of God, our purpose of pleasing him.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The kingdom of this world and all the beauty of life I have esteemed as nothing, for the excellency of the love of Jesus Christ my Lord

On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy widow Iadwiga, Grand Princess of Poland, who fell asleep in the Lord upon the 15th day of this present month of October.
October 17th 2026, the 6th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:
At Antioch, the holy martyr Heron, a disciple of blessed Ignatius, after whom he was made Bishop of that city. He followed in all godliness in the steps of his master, and for the love of Christ laid down his life for the sheep committed to his care.
Upon the same day, (in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian,) the holy martyrs Victor, Alexander, and Marian.
In Persia, (in the fifth century,) the holy martyr Mamelta. She was turned to the faith from the worshipping of idols by a warning from an angel, was stoned by the Gentiles, and drowned in the depths of a lake.
At Constantinople, the holy monk Andrew of Crete. He was often beaten under the Emperor Constantine Copronymus for his honouring of holy images, and at length, after one of his feet had been cut off, he gave up the ghost.
At Orange, in Gaul, (in the sixth century,) holy Florentine, Bishop (of that see,) who was famous for many graces, and fell asleep in the Lord.
