Margherita Maria Alacoque nata da onorata famiglia in un villaggio della diocesi di Autun, già fin dai primi anni diede indizi della futura santità. Accesa d'amore per la Vergine Madre di Dio e per l'augusto sacramento dell'Eucaristia, giovanetta consacrò a Dio la sua verginità, bramando unicamente di modellare la vita secondo le cristiane virtù. Si deliziava delle preghiere lunghe, della contemplazione delle cose celesti, del disprezzo di sè, della pazienza nelle avversità, del tormento de corpo, della carità verso il prossimo specialmente povero; e si sforzava con somma cura di ricopiare con tutte le forze gli esempi santissimi del Redentore.

Entrata nell'Ordine della Visitazione, cominciò subito a risplendere per fervore di vita religiosa. Fu da Dio onorata del dono di alta orazione, di altri doni di grazia e di frequenti visioni. Di queste la più celebre fu quando mentre pregava davanti all'Eucaristia Gesù le diede a vedere se stesso e le mostrò il Cuore divino sul petto aperto acceso di fiamme e circondato di spine, e le comandò che, per tale carità e per espiare gli oltraggi degli uomini ingrati, ella cercasse d'istituire il culto pubblico al suo Cuore, proponendo grandi premi del tesoro celeste. Titubante ella per umiltà e professandosi incapace di tanta cosa l'amantissimo Signore le fa coraggio, ed insieme le designa per guida ed aiuto un uomo di esimia santità, Claudio de la Colombière: e l'infiamma colla speranza di quella somma utilità, che poi dal culto del divin Cuore si diffuse nella Chiesa.

Margherita si studiava con ogni diligenza di compiere gli ordini del Redentore. Tuttavia non le mancarono molte molestie e aspre villanie da coloro che andavano ripetendo essere ella un'illusa. Cose tutte che sopportò con animo tranquillo, anzi metteva in conto di guadagno, stimando ch'ella per via di obbrobri e dolori sarebbe divenuta ostia a Dio gradita, e che avrebbe ottenuto maggiori aiuti per il suo disegno. Illustre per lode di religiosa perfezione e per mezzo della contemplazione delle cose eterne di giorno in giorno unendosi sempre più allo sposo celeste, se ne volò a lui, nell'anno quarantatré dell'età sua, dell'era volgare 1690. Illustre per miracoli Benedetto XV l'iscrisse tra i santi e il Sommo Pontefice Pio XI ne estese l'ufficio a tutta la Chiesa.

Nessun'altra è vera scienza, all'infuori di quella ch'è data dallo Spirito Santo, ma questa viene concessa solo agli umili. Non abbiamo forse visto dei gran teologi dire meraviglie delle virtù, ma perché non le esercitavano? Al contrario abbiamo visto molte donne, che non sapevano ragionare delle virtù, ma ben sapevano compiere le opere delle virtù. Ora lo Spirito Santo ha fatto queste tali sapienti, perché avevano e il timor del Signore e la pietà e l'umiltà.

Egli porta le nostre miserie e le nobilita, mette la miseria (nostra) nel suo Cuore, mostra il costato. Ma occorre che noi lo riamiamo, altrimenti mentre (ora) ci mostra le piaghe per amore, una volta ce le mostrerà per ira e indignazione. Fa, o buon Gesù, che noi riceviamo la pace che ci offri, e che vediamo le tue piaghe, di modo che, finché rimangono la fede, la speranza e la carità, radicati nella fede, lieti per la speranza, e accesi di carità, aspettiamo la beata speranza e la tua venuta, cosicché in esso, Ti vediamo Agnello alla destra non leone alla sinistra; e invece della fede abbiamo la visione, invece della speranza il possesso e invece della carità imperfetta la perfetta, in cui godremo per i secoli dei secoli. Margaret Mary Alacoque was born of a respectable family in a village in the diocese of Autun. From her earliest years she gave signs of holiness. Filled with a burning love of the Virgin Mother of God, and of the august mystery of the Eucharist, while still a young girl she dedicated her virginity to God. Above all else she strove to realize in her life the performance of Christian virtues. She delighted to spend continuous hours in prayers and in meditation upon the things of heaven. She was humble, and patient in adversity. She practised bodily penance. She was charitable towards her neighbours, especially the poor. By every means within her power she strove diligently to imitate the most holy example left by our divine Redeemer.

Reading 5
Margaret entered the Order of the Visitation. There her life became immediately a shining example to others. God endowed her highly with the gift of prayer. He gave her other favours, such as frequent visitations. The most famous of these was that one when Jesus appeared to her as she knelt in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Opening his breast, He revealed his divine Heart glowing with flames and encircled with a crown of thorns. He bade her in return for his excessive love and in atonement for the insults of ungrateful men, to seek to have established public adoration of his Heart. This devotion he promised to enrich with treasures of heavenly grace. When, out of humility, she hesitated to undertake so great a task, the loving Saviour encouraged her. At the same time he pointed out Claude de la Colombiere, a man of great holiness, as one who could guide and help her. Our Lord also comforted her with the assurance that very great blessings would accrue afterwards to the Church from the worship of his divine Heart.

Margaret strove ardently to fulfill the Redeemer's command. Vexations, even bitter insults, were her portion from some who maintained that she was subject to mental aberrations. She not only bore these sufferings patiently, she even profited by them, offering herself in anguish and reproach as a victim acceptable to God, bearing all things as a more sure means of accomplishing her purpose. Renowned for her religious perfection, becoming each day more closely united with her divine spouse by contemplation of celestial things, she took flight to him in the forty-third year of her age, and in the year of restored salvation 1690. She became famous for miracles. Benedict XV added her to the list of the saints; Pius XI extended her office to the universal Church.

The Holy Spirit hath made these wise because they had fear of the Lord, piety and humility.

Illustre per mirabile innocenza e penitenza e acceso di singolare amore verso Cristo crocifisso, dal Papa Pio nono fu ascritto nel catalogo dei Santi, e la celebrazione della sua festa venne fissata al ventotto Aprile.
Così pure ad Arenas, in Spagna, il natale di san Piétro d'Alcàntara, Sacerdote dell'Ordine dei Minori e Confessore, il quale, per la meravigliosa penitenza e per molti miracoli, dal Sommo Pontefice Clemènte nono fu ascritto nel numero dei Santi. La sua festa si celebra nel giorno seguente.

A Sinomovico, nel territorio di Beauvais, san Giusto Martire, il quale, essendo ancor fanciullo, nella persecuzione dell'Imperatore Diocleziàno, sotto il Preside Riziovàro, fu decapitato.
A Roma santa Trifónia, già moglie di Dècio Cèsare e madre di santa Cirilla, Vergine e Martire. Il suo corpo fu sepolto in una cripta, vicino a sant'Ippolito.
Presso Auriesville, nello stato di New York, i santi Martiri della Compagnia di Gesù, Isàcco Jogues, Sacerdote, e Giovànni de La Lande, Coadiutore, i quali in questo e nel giorno seguente furono barbaramente uccisi dagli Irochési, nello stesso luogo ove, pochi anni avanti. Renàto Goupil, anch'esso Coadiutore, aveva conseguito la palma del martirio.
Nei confini della regione di Edèssa, nella Mesopotàmia, la commemorazione di san Giuliàno Eremita, soprannominato Saba, la cui memoria si celebra anche il diciassette Gennaio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
October 18th 2026, the 7th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The blessed Evangelist Luke, who suffered many things for Christ's Name's sake, and died in Bithynia, full of the Holy Ghost. His bones were first brought to Constantinople, and thence to Padua.
At Antioch, holy Asclepiades, Patriarch (of that see,) who was one of the noble multitude of martyrs who suffered gloriously under Macrinus.
In the country of Beauvais, the holy martyr Justus, who, while he was yet a lad, was slain under the President Rictiovarus in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Neo-Caesarea, in Pontus, the holy martyr Athenodorus, Bishop (of that see.) He was brother of holy Gregory the Wonder-worker, was famous for his teaching, and was crowned with martyrdom in the persecution under the Emperor Aurelian.
On the bank of the Euphrates, in Mesopotamia, (at the end of the fourth century,) the holy hermit Julian.
At Rome, the holy Confessor Paul of the Cross, founder of the Congregation styled the Congregation of the Cross and Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was famous for his marvelous innocency and devotion to penance, and kindled with an exceeding love toward Christ crucified. Pope Pius IX enrolled his name among those of the Saints, and appointed for his festival the 28th day of April.
At Rome also, (in the third century,) holy Tryphonia, widow of Decius Caesar. She is buried in the Catacombs beside holy Hippolytus.

103:27 e quel dragone che tu formasti, perché vi scherzi. * Tutti essi attendono da te, che tu dia loro il cibo a suo tempo.
103:28 Tu lo dai loro, ed essi lo raccolgono: * tu allarghi la mano, e tutti sono ricolmi di bene.
103:29 Ma se tu volgi altrove la faccia, restano turbati: * se ritiri da loro lo spirito, vengono meno, e ritornano nella loro polvere.
103:30 Manderai il tuo spirito, e saranno creati: * e rinnoverai la faccia della terra.
103:31 Sia celebrata in eterno la gloria del Signore, * il Signore si rallegrerà nelle sue opere:
103:32 Egli che mira la terra, e la fa tremare: * che tocca i monti, e gettan fumo.
103:33 Io canterò al Signore per tutta la mia vita: * inneggerò al mio Dio, finché sarò.
103:34 Gli siano gradite le mie parole: * quanto a me, porrò le mie delizie nel Signore.
103:35 Spariscano i peccatori dalla terra, e gli iniqui, sicché non esistano più. * Benedici, anima mia, il Signore.
