1 Gionata vedendo che il tempo era favorevole, elesse dei deputati e li mandò a Roma a confermare e rinnovare l'amicizia con quelli;
2 E anche agli Spartani e in altri luoghi mandò lettere dello stesso tenore.
3 Quelli dunque andarono a Roma, ed entrati nella curia, dissero: Gionata sommo sacerdote e la nazione dei Giudei ci hanno mandati a rinnovare l'amicizia e l'alleanza, come per il passato.
4 E (i Romani) diedero ad essi lettere per i loro (governatori) nei (diversi) luoghi, affinché li facessero ricondurre con sicurezza nella terra di Giuda.

7 E’ già tempo che fu mandata lettera da Ario, che regnava tra voi, a Onia sommo sacerdote, dicendo che voi siete nostri fratelli, come lo dimostra il rescritto qui portato.
8 E Onia accolse onorevolmente il messo e le lettere, nelle quali si parlava di fare amicizia e alleanza.

Lettura 4
Giovanni, nato nel paese di Canzio, nella diocesi di Cracovia, donde il soprannome di Canzio, dai pii e agiati genitori Stanislao ed Anna, fin dall'infanzia la dolcezza, innocenza e gravità dei suoi costumi fecero concepire la speranza che sarebbe giunto a un altissimo grado di virtù. Dapprima uditore di filosofia e teologia nell'università di Cracovia, poi, passando per tutti i gradi accademici, professore e dottore per molti anni, non solo illuminava le menti dei suoi uditori colla dottrina sacra che esponeva, ma li infiammava altresì a ogni specie di pietà, mostrando coll'esempio ciò che insegnava. Divenuto sacerdote, senza trascurare per nulla lo studio delle lettere, si applicò ancor più alla perfezione cristiana. E deplorando sommamente che Dio fosse troppo spesso offeso, si sforzava di placarlo per sé e per il popolo, offrendo per ciò ogni giorno, non senza molte lacrime, l'incruento sacrificio. Resse egregiamente per alcuni anni la parrocchia d'Ilkutz; ma turbato dal pericolo delle anime, poi la lasciò, e, dietro domanda dell'accademia, riprese l'antico ministero dell'insegnamento.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano
* e gli procurò eterna gloria.

Lettura 5
Tutto il tempo che gli lasciava lo studio, parte lo dedicava nel procurare la salvezza del prossimo, soprattutto colla predicazione, parte alla preghiera, in cui si racconta che fosse favorito talvolta da visioni e colloqui celesti. La passione di Cristo lo toccava talmente, che passava talvolta le notti intere nel contemplarla, e, per rappresentarsela più vivamente, fece il pellegrinaggio di Gerusalemme; dove, infiammato dal desiderio del martirio, non temé di predicare ai Turchi stessi Cristo crocifisso. Si portò pure quattro volte a Roma alla tomba degli Apostoli, a piedi e carico del suo fardello, sia per onorarvi la Sede apostolica, cui era estremamente attaccato, sia per diminuire (diceva egli) le pene del suo purgatorio, grazie alla remissione dei peccati che vi si può lucrare ogni giorno. In uno di questi viaggi, derubato una volta dai ladri e, richiesto se aveva ancora qualche cosa, rispose di no, ma poi, ricordatosi d'aver alcuni pezzi d'oro cuciti nel suo mantello, si mise a gridare dietro a loro che fuggivano per offrir ad essi anche questi; e quelli, ammirando la semplicità insieme e la bontà del sant'uomo, gli restituirono spontaneamente anche ciò che gli avevano preso. Perché non si offendesse la fama del prossimo, fece scrivere, ad esempio di sant'Agostino, su d'una parete, dei versi a perpetuo avvertimento suo e degli altri. Nutriva i famelici perfin colle vivande della sua tavola; i nudi poi li rivestiva non solo comprando, ma togliendosi perfino i propri abiti e le scarpe, lasciando cadere intanto il proprio mantello fino a terra perché non si vedesse ch'egli rientrava in casa a piedi nudi.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Lettura 6
Egli dormiva poco e per terra; per veste e cibo aveva lo stretto necessario per coprirsi e sostenere le forze. Custodì la verginità, come giglio tra le spine, con aspro cilicio, colle discipline e coi digiuni. Anzi, durante gli ultimi circa trentacinque anni della sua vita, si astenne completamente dall'uso della carne. Infine, pieno di giorni e di meriti, dopo essersi lungamente e diligentemente preparato alla morte, che prevedeva approssimarsi, per non sentire verun attaccamento, distribuì ai poveri tutto quanto poteva ancora rimanergli. Quindi, munito santamente dei sacramenti della Chiesa, bramando d'essere sciolto per essere con Cristo, se ne volò in cielo la vigilia del S. Natale, glorioso per miracoli prima e dopo morte. Spirato, fu portato nella chiesa di sant'Anna, vicina all'università, dove venne onorevolmente sepolto. Accresciutisi di giorno in giorno la venerazione e il concorso del popolo, egli onorato religiosissimamente come uno dei principali patroni della Polonia e della Lituania. Illustrato da nuovi miracoli, il sommo Pontefice Clemente XIII l'iscrisse solennemente nell'albo dei Santi il 16 Luglio dell'anno 1767.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Noi teniamo in mano le lucerne accese, quando diamo al nostro prossimo con le buone opere esempi che lo illuminano. A proposito di tali opere il Signore dice: «La vostra luce risplenda davanti agli uomini, affinché essi vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.
℣. Ecco un uomo irreprensibile, vero cultore di Dio: si astenne da ogni malvagità e perseverò nella propria innocenza.
℟. Egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

Benedizione. Colui del quale celebriamo la festa, interceda per noi presso il Signore.

Lettura 8
Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Ma anche se si osservano i due comandamenti, rimane il dovere, per chiunque si tratti, di tendere con la speranza alla patria superna e di non star lontano in alcun modo dai vizi soltanto per l'onore di questo mondo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

«E voi siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni dalle nozze, per aprirgli subito appena giungerà e picchierà alla porta». Il Signore in verità viene quando si affretta al giudizio; picchia poi quando, con gli affanni della malattia, ci avverte che ormai la morte è vicina. Noi gli apriamo subito, se lo riceviamo con amore. Non vuole infatti aprire al giudice che picchia, colui che ha paura di uscire dal corpo e ha timore di vedere questo giudice, che ricorda di aver disprezzato. Ma chi è tranquillo per la sua speranza e per il suo modo di agire, apre subito a chi picchia, perché accoglie con gioia il giudice; e, quando è vicino il tempo della morte, egli si rallegra pensando ad una gloriosa retribuzione.

Reading 4
This John was the son of godly and respectable parents named Stanislaus and Anne, and was born in the year of our Lord 1397, in the town of Kenty, a place in the diocese of Krakow in Poland, from which he took the Latin name of Cantius. By his gentleness, innocency, and seriousness he gave great hopes even from his childhood. He studied Philosophy and Theology in the University of Krakow, wherein he rose step by step to be a Professor and teacher of those sciences wherein he lectured many years, not only enlightening the minds of his hearers, but stirring up in them all godliness, instructing them by example as well as by word. Having taken Priests' orders, he ceased not to busy himself with letters, but added thereto the striving after Christian perfection. He grieved exceedingly that God should be offended on all hands, and offered up to Him, day by day, not without many tears, the Unbloody Sacrifice for a propitiation for himself and for his people. He was for some years a faithful Parish Priest at Ilkusi, but after a while gave it up for fear of the danger of souls, and accepted the call of the University to take up again his Professorship.

What time was left him over from his work, he gave up partly to the profit of his neighbour, more especially in preaching, and partly in prayer, wherein he is said sometimes to have had heavenly visions and messages. The sufferings of Christ took such hold upon him, that he sometimes passed whole nights without sleep in thinking thereon, and that he might more keenly realize them, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There he was seized with such a passionate longing to be a martyr, that he preached Christ crucified even to the Turks. He went four times to Rome to the thresholds of the Apostles, on foot, and laden with a wallet, partly to do honour to the Apostolic See, for which he had a great reverence, and partly (to use his own expression) that he might clear off the pains of his own purgatory by use of the Pardons for sin which are there daily offered. In one of these journeys he was set upon by highway robbers, who plundered him, and having asked him if he had any more, whereto he answered, Nay, left him and fled. Then he remembered that he had some gold pieces sewn up in his clothes. So he ran after the robbers with shouts, and offered them these also, but they were so amazed at the simplicity and charity of the holy man, that they gave him back even that which they had already taken. To hinder scandal-mongering, he wrote up upon the walls, after the example of holy Augustine, certain texts, to be an unceasing warning to himself and others. He gave his own bread to the hungry, and clothed the naked, not with bought raiment only, but by stripping himself of his own garments and shoes, himself meanwhile letting down his own cloak to trail upon the ground, lest any should see that he returned home barefoot.

He slept very little, and that upon the ground; his clothing was enough only to clothe his nakedness, and his food to keep him alive. He kept his virgin purity guarded like a lily among thorns by rough hair-cloth, scourging, and fasting. For about thirty-five years before his death he never tasted flesh- meat. At length, when he was full of days and good works, he felt that death was near, and made himself ready to meet it by a long and careful preparation, and to be the freer, he gave to the poor everything that was left in his house. Strengthened by the Sacraments of the Church, and having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ, he took flight to heaven upon the 24th day of December, in the year of our Lord 1473. He was famous for miracles both before and after his death. His body was carried into the University Church of St. Anne, hard by his dwelling, and there honourably buried. Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.

Luke 1:68-79
1:68 Blessed be the Lord ✠ God of Israel; * because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:
1:69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, * in the house of David his servant:
1:70 As he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * who are from the beginning:
1:71 Salvation from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:
1:72 To perform mercy to our fathers, * and to remember his holy testament,
1:73 The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, * that he would grant to us,

1:79 To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: * to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Martyrology {anticipated}
October 21st 2026, the 10th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Cologne, the holy Ursula and her Companions, who, for their steadfastness in Christianity and chastity, were massacred by the Huns, and so closed their earthly life by martyrdom.
Very many of their bodies are buried at Cologne.
In Cyprus, the holy Abbot Hilarion, of whom holy Jerome hath written the life, full of graces and wonders.
At Ostia, the holy martyr Asterius, a Priest who suffered under the Emperor Alexander, as is written in the acts of the passion of the blessed Pope Kallistus.
At Nicomedia, the holy martyrs Dasius, Zoticus, Caius, and twelve others, soldiers, who were diversely tormented, and then drowned in the sea, (under the Emperor Diocletian.) At Maronia, in Syria, near Antioch, (in the fourth century,) the holy monk Malchus.
