Lettura 4
Pietro nato da nobili genitori in Alcantara nella Spagna, fin dai più teneri anni diede indizi della futura santità. Entrato a sedici anni nell'ordine dei Minori, si mostrò modello di tutte le virtù. Esercitando allora per obbedienza il ministero della predicazione, ricondusse innumerevoli dal vizio alla vera penitenza. Desideroso di ristabilire esattissimamente l'osservanza primitiva di san Francesco, confidando nel soccorso del cielo e appoggiato dall'autorità apostolica, fondò presso Pedrosa un convento assai angusto e povero, dove cominciò felicemente un tenore di vita austerissimo, che poi si propagò meravigliosamente nelle diverse provincie della Spagna e fino alle Indie. Aiutò santa Teresa, di cui avea sperimentato lo spirito, nel promuovere la riforma del Carmelo. Questa santa poi, avendo appreso da Dio che non gli domanderebbe mai nulla in nome di Pietro senza essere subito esaudita, era solita di raccomandarsi alle sue preghiere, e di chiamarlo santo tuttora vivente.

Declinava colla più grande umiltà i favori dei principi che lo consultavano come un oracolo, e si rifiutò d'essere confessore di Carlo V. Osservante rigidissimo della povertà, si contentava d'una sola tonaca, la più brutta che ci fosse. Fu si delicato della purezza, da non permettere al frate che lo serviva nell'ultima malattia di toccarlo minimamente. Ridusse il suo corpo in soggezione con una continuità di veglie, digiuni, discipline, col freddo, colla nudità e ogni altra specie di rigori, avendo fatto un patto con esso di non concedergli alcun riposo in questo mondo. L'amore di Dio e del prossimo, onde riboccava il suo cuore, suscitavagli talvolta tale incendio, ch' era costretto a uscire subito dalle strettezze della cella e a correre per la campagna, per temperare, colla freschezza dell'aria, l'ardore che lo bruciava.

Fu elevato a un grado di contemplazione sì ammirabile, che il suo spirito n'era continuamente nutrito, tanto d'arrivare talvolta a passare più giorni senza prendere alcun cibo o bevanda. Si vide spesso sollevato in aria, e risplendente di meraviglioso fulgore. Passò a piedi asciutti rapidi fiumi. In una estrema penuria, nutrì i suoi frati con alimento venuto dal cielo. Un bastone, da lui ficcato in terra, crebbe subito in una verde ficaia. Camminando una notte sotto la neve, che cadeva a larghe Falde, entrò in una casa diroccata e senza tetto dove della neve sospesa in aria gli fece da tetto, perché non fosse soffocato dalla gran quantità. S. Teresa attesta essere egli stato dotato del dono di profezia e del discernimento degli spiriti. Infine, a sessantatré anni, nell'ora che aveva predetto, se ne andò al Signore, confortato da una meravigliosa visione e dalla presenza di Santi. Lo stesso momento santa Teresa, che si trovava molto lontana, lo vide portare in cielo; ed essendole poi apparso, le disse: O felice penitenza, che m'ha meritato gloria sì grande! Reso illustre dopo morte da molti miracoli, Clemente IX l'iscrisse ne' novero dei Santi.

Chiama piccolo il gregge degli eletti, o per comparazione del maggior numero dei dannati, o meglio per la devozione dell'umiltà: poiché, sebbene la sua Chiesa sia già estesa con quanta mai numerosità, tuttavia vuole che cresca fino alla fine del mondo in umiltà, e che raggiunga con l'umiltà il regno promesso. Pertanto, dopo aver consolato delicatamente le sue fatiche, colei a cui ha ordinato di cercare soltanto il regno di Dio, alla medesima promette con compiaciuta bontà il regno che verrà donato dal Padre.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Non temete, disse, che vengano a mancare ai combattenti per il regno di Dio le cose necessarie di questo mondo: che anzi vendete anche le cose possedute per l'elemosina. Ciò allora si fa degnamente, quando uno, una volta disprezzate tutte le sue cose per il Signore, nondimeno dopo di queste con il lavoro delle mani opera sia per avere il vitto sia perché possa dare elemosina. Donde si gloria l'Apostolo, dicendo: «Non ho io desiderato l'argento, e l'oro, le vesti di nessuno: conforme voi sapete che al bisogno mio e di quelli che sono con me servirono queste mani. In tutto vi ho dimostrato come così lavorando, conviene sostenere i deboli».

Reading 4
Peter was born at Alcantara, (a small town in the Province of Estramadura,) in Spain, in the year of our Lord 1499. His father, (Alphonso Garavito, was a lawyer and Governor of the town,) and his mother (was) of good extraction. The holiness of his life was foreshadowed from his earliest years. In the sixteenth year of his age he entered the Order of Friars Minor, wherein he showed himself a pattern to all. He undertook the work of preaching in obedience to his Superiors, and thereby brought many to turn away from sin to true repentance. He conceived a great desire to bring back the observance of the Rule of St. Francis to the uttermost straitness of old times, and to that end, supported by God's help, and armed with the approval of the Apostolic See, he founded in the year 1555 a new stern and poor house near Pedraso, from which the harder way of life, therein happily begun, spread marvellously through diverse Provinces of Spain even to the Indies. He was an helper to holy Theresa, with whom he was like-minded, in bringing about the Reformation of the Carmelites. She was taught of God that no one should ask anything in the name of Peter without being heard, and was used to ask him to pray for her, and to call him a Saint while as he was yet alive.

He humbly excused himself from accepting the courtesies of princes, by whom his advice was sought as that of an oracle, and declined to become the Confessor of the Emperor Charles V. He was a very careful keeper to poverty, and contented himself with a single tunic than which none was worse. Purity he carried to such a point that when he was lying sick of his last illness, he would not allow the brother who ministered to him to touch him, how lightly soever. He brought his body into bondage by unceasing watching, fasting, scourging, cold, nakedness, and all manner of hardships, having made it a promise never to allow it any rest in this world. The love of God and his neighbour, which was shed abroad in his heart, somewhiles burnt so that he was fain to run from his cell into the open air to cool himself.

He was marvellous how his thoughts became altogether rapt in God, so that somewhiles it befell that he neither ate nor drank for the space of several days. He was oftentimes seen to rise into the air, shining with an unearthly glory. He passed dry-shod over torrents. When his brethren were in the last state of need, he fed them with food from heaven. A staff which he fixed in the earth grew presently into a green fig-tree. Once while he was travelling by night in the midst of an heavy snow-storm, and took refuge in a ruined and roofless house, then the falling snow made a roof over him lest he should be overwhelmed. Holy Theresa beareth witness that he had the gift of prophecy and of the discerning of spirits. At length, in the 63rd year of his own age, and of salvation 1562, at the hour which he had himself foretold, (upon the 18th day of October,) he passed away to be for ever with the Lord, cheered in his last moments by a wonderful vision and by the presence of Saints. At the instant of his death, blessed Theresa, then afar off, saw him carried to heaven. He appeared to her afterwards, and said O what happy penance, to have won for me such glory! After his death he became famous for very many miracles, and Clement IX. inscribed his name among those of the Saints.

That kingdom He promiseth to her here, when He biddeth her to seek only the kingdom of God, and, to comfort her in her travail, He doth so sweetly and so graciously say that her Father will give it to her.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.

San Giovanni Cànzio, Prete e Confessore, il quale si addormentò nel Signore il ventiquattro Dicembre.
Nella città di Aveia Vestina, presso Aquila, nell'Abruzzo, il natale dei beato Màssimo, Levita e Martire, il quale, pel desiderio di patire, si mostrò manifestamente ai persecutori, che andavano in cerca di lui, e, dopo la costante confessione, sospeso sull'eculeo e tormentato, quindi percosso con bastoni, da ultimo precipitato da un alto luogo, morì.
Ad Agen, in Frància, san Capràsio Martire, il quale, stando nascosto in una spelonca per sfuggire al furore della persecuzione, finalmente, udendo come la beata Fede Vergine lottava per Cristo, e perciò animato a sostenere i tormenti, pregò il Signore, che, se lo giudicava degno della gloria del martirio, facesse scaturire acqua limpidissima dal sasso della spelonca; il che avendo ottenuto dal Signore, corse sicuro al campo di battaglia, e generosamente combattendo, sotto l'Imperatore Massimiàno, meritò la palma del martirio.
Ad Antiochia sant'Artémio, duce Augustàle, il quale, avendo ottenuto sotto Costantino Magno cospicui gradi nella milizia, da Giuliàno l'Apòstata, al quale egli aveva rimproverato la sua crudeltà contro i Cristiani, fu fatto percuotere con bastoni, straziare con altri tormenti e finalmente decapitare.
A Costantinopoli sant'Andréa Creténse, Monaco, il quale, per il culto delle sacre immagini, sotto Costantino Coprónimo, fu spesso percosso, e finalmente, essendogli stato amputato un piede, rese lo spirito.

Così pure a Parigi la Traslazione dei santi Martiri Giorgio Diacono ed Aurélio, da Cordova, città della Spagna, dove un tempo, insieme con altri tre Compagni, avevano ambedue compiuto il martirio il ventisette Luglio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
The morrow is the Octave of the holy Confessor Edward.
On the morrow also we keep the Feast of the Holy Confessor John of Kenty, in Poland, glorious for graces and miracles, whose name the Supreme Pontiff Clement XIII enrolled among those of the Saints, (and of whom mention is made upon the 24th day of December.)
October 20th 2026, the 9th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Avia, near Aquila, in the Abruzzi, (in the third century,) the blessed martyr Maximus the Levite. From his desire to suffer he showed himself when the persecutors sought for him, when he was interrogated he answered with steadfastness, was tortured upon the rack, then cudgelled, and at last thrown down from an high place, and so slain.
At Agen, in Gaul, the holy martyr Caprasius. He had escaped from the fury of the persecution, and was lying hid in a cave, when he heard how the blessed Virgin Faith was suffering for Christ's sake. Then he was stirred up to bear suffering likewise, and he prayed the Lord that if He judged him also to be worthy of the glory of martyrdom He would cause a spring of clear water to break forth from the rock of the cave, which thing when the Lord granted, Caprasius went back confidently to the field of battle, and gained the crown of martyrdom by a noble contention.
At Antioch, the holy Augustal Prefect Artemius, who had been distinguished for the highest military service under the Emperor Constantine the Great, but when he rebuked the Emperor Julian the Apostate for his cruelty toward the Christians, Julian commanded him to be cudgelled, tortured, and beheaded.
At Cologne, the holy Virgins Martha and Saula, and others, all martyrs.
At Minden, (in the third century,) the holy martyr Bishop Felician.
