Dalla Lettera Enciclica di Papa Pio XI
Lett. Encicl. Quas primas, del dì 11 Dicembre 1925
Avendo questo Anno santo concorso non in uno ma in più modi ad illustrare il regno di Cristo, ci sembra che faremo cosa quanto mai consentanea al nostro ufficio Apostolico, se, assecondando le preghiere di moltissimi Cardinali, Vescovi e fedeli fatte a Noi sia da soli che collettivamente, chiuderemo questo stesso Anno coll’introdurre nella sacra liturgia una festa speciale di Gesù Cristo Re. Da gran tempo si è usato comunemente di chiamare Cristo con l'appellativo di Re per il sommo grado di eccellenza, che ha in modo sovraeminente fra tutte le cose create. In tal modo infatti, si dice ch'egli regna nelle «menti degli uomini» non solo per l'altezza del suo pensiero e per la vastità della sua scienza, ma anche perché egli è Verità, ed è necessario che gli uomini attingano e ricevano con obbedienza da lui la verità; similmente «nelle volontà degli uomini», sia perché in lui alla santità della volontà divina risponde la perfetta integrità e sottomissione della volontà umana, sia perché colle sue ispirazioni influisce sulla libera volontà nostra, in modo da infiammarci verso le più nobili cose. Infine Cristo è riconosciuto « Re dei cuori» per quella «sua carità che sorpassa ogni comprensione umana» e per le attrattive della sua mansuetudine e benignità: nessuno infatti degli uomini fu mai tanto amato e lo sarà in seguito al pari di Gesù Cristo. Ma per entrare in argomento, tutti devono riconoscere ch'è necessario rivendicare a Cristo-uomo nel vero senso della parola il nome e i poteri di re; infatti soltanto in quanto è uomo si può dire che abbia ricevuto dal Padre la «potestà, l'onore e il regno» perché, come Verbo di Dio, essendo della stessa sostanza del Padre, non può non avere in comune col Padre ciò ch'è proprio della divinità; e per conseguenza egli su tutte le cose create ha il sommo e assolutissimo impero.

℟. Esulta grandemente, o figlia di Sion; giubila, o figlia di Gerusalemme ecco che viene a te il tuo Re giusto e Salvatore:

Lettura 5
Ben a proposito Cirillo Alessandrino, a mostrare il fondamento di questa dignità e di questo potere, avverte che: «Egli, per dirla in una parola, ha il dominio su tutte le cose create, non estorto con violenza né venutogli da altri, ma per la sua stessa essenza e natura»; cioè il principato di Cristo si fonda su quella unione mirabile, ch'è chiamata unione ipostatica. Dal che segue, che Cristo non solo deve essere adorato come Dio dagli Angeli e dagli uomini, ma che anche a lui come Uomo debbono e gli Angeli e gli uomini essere soggetti ed obbedire: cioè che pel solo fatto dell'unione ipostatica Cristo ebbe potestà su tutte le creature. Volendo ora esprimere la natura e il valore di questo principato, accenniamo brevemente ch'esso consta di una triplice potestà, la quale se venisse a mancare, già non si avrebbe più il concetto d'un vero e proprio principato. Le testimonianze attinte dalle sacre Lettere circa l'impero universale del nostro Redentore provano più che a sufficienza quanto abbiamo detto, ed è dogma di fede, che Gesù Cristo è stato dato agli uomini quale Redentore in cui debbono riporre la loro fiducia, ed allo stesso tempo come legislatore a cui debbano ubbidire. I santi Vangeli non soltanto ci narrano che Gesù abbia promulgato delle leggi, ma ce lo presentano altresì nell'atto stesso di legiferare: e il divino Maestro afferma in varie circostanze e con diverse espressioni, che chiunque osserverà i suoi comandamenti, darà prova di amarlo e rimarrà nella sua carità. Lo stesso Gesù davanti ai Giudei che l'accusavano di aver violato il Sabato coll'aver ridonata la sanità al paralitico, afferma che a lui fu dal Padre attribuita la potestà giudiziaria: «Ché il Padre non giudica alcuno, ma ha rimesso ogni giustizia al Figlio» Joann. 5,21. Nel che è compreso anche il diritto di premiare e punire gli uomini anche durante la loro vita (perché ciò non può disgiungersi da una certa forma di giudizio). Inoltre la potestà esecutiva devesi parimenti attribuire a Gesù Cristo, poiché è necessario che tutti obbediscano al suo comando, e nessuno può sfuggire ad esso e ai supplizi da lui stabiliti.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Lettura 6
Che poi questo regno sia principalmente spirituale e attinente alle cose spirituali, ce lo mostrano i passi della sacra Bibbia sopra riferiti, e ce lo conferma Gesù Cristo stesso col suo modo di agire. In varie occasioni, infatti, quando i Giudei e gli stessi Apostoli credevano per errore che il Messia avrebbe reso la libertà al popolo, ed avrebbe ripristinato il regno d'Israele, egli cercò di togliere loro dal capo questa vana attesa e questa speranza; e così pure quando stava per essere proclamato re dalla moltitudine che, presa di ammirazione, lo attorniava, egli declinò questo titolo e questo onore ritirandosi e nascondendosi nella solitudine; finalmente davanti al Preside romano annunciò che il suo regno «non è di questo mondo» Joann. 18,36. Questo regno nei Vangeli viene presentato in tal modo, che gli uomini debbono prepararsi ad entrarvi per mezzo della penitenza, e non possano entrarvi se non per la fede e per il battesimo, il quale sacramento, benchésia un rito esterno, significa però e produce la rigenerazione interiore; questo regno è opposto unicamente al regno di Satana e alla potestà delle tenebre, e richiede dai suoi sudditi non solo l'animo distaccato dalle ricchezze e dalle cose terrene, la mitezza dei costumi e la fame e sete di giustizia, ma anche che essi rinneghino se stessi e prendano la loro croce. Avendo Cristo come Redentore costituita col suo sangue la Chiesa, e come Sacerdote offrendo se stesso in perpetuo quale ostia di propiziazione per i peccati degli uomini, chi non vede che la regale dignità di lui rivesta il carattere spirituale dell'uno e dell'altro ufficio? D'altra parte gravemente errerebbe, chi togliesse a Cristo-uomo il potere su tutte le cose temporali, dato ch'egli ha ricevuto dal Padre un diritto assoluto su tutte le cose create, in modo che tutto soggiaccia al suo arbitrio. Pertanto colla nostra apostolica autorità istituiamo la festa di Nostro Signor Gesù Cristo Re, stabilendo che sia celebrata in tutte le parti della terra l'ultima Domenica dì Ottobre, cioè la Domenica precedente la festa di Tutti i Santi. Similmente ordiniamo che in questo medesimo giorno, ogni anno, si rinnovi la consacrazione di tutto il genere umano al Cuore Santissimo di Gesù.

Che gran cosa fu per il Re dei secoli farsi Re degli uomini? Infatti Cristo non fu Re d'Israele per esigere tributo o armare di ferro un esercito e debellare visibilmente i nemici; ma è Re d'Israele per reggerne le menti, per averne cura in eterno, per introdurre nel regno dei cieli quelli che (in lui) credono, sperano e l'amano. Che dunque il Figlio di Dio uguale al Padre, il Verbo per cui tutte le cose sono state fatte, abbia voluto essere Re d'Israele, è una sua degnazione, non una promozione; è un segno di misericordia, non un aumento di potere. Egli infatti che fu appellato sulla terra il Re dei Giudei, nei cieli è il Signore degli Angeli. Ma Cristo è Re soltanto dei Giudei, o anche dei Gentili? Certo anche dei Gentili. Perché dopo di aver detto in una profezia: «Io poi sono stato costituito Re da lui sopra Sion, il suo santo monte per annunziare i precetti del Signore» Ps. 2,6: affinché, a motivo del monte Sion, nessuno lo dicesse costituito Re dei soli Giudei, subito soggiunse: «Il Signore disse a me: Tu sei mio Figlio, oggi io ti ho generato: chiedimelo, e io ti darò le Genti per tua eredità, e per tuo dominio i confini della terra» 1 Ps 7,8.

Sovente i farisei si agitano, e non possono trovare in ciò ch'è occorso l'occasione di accusare Gesù. Niente infatti di difettoso poteva trovarsi nelle sue azioni e nelle sue parole; ma la loro malvagità li spingeva a proseguire le loro ricerche per scoprire di che accusarlo. Ché dai vizi del mondo, dalle superstizioni, dalle religioni inventate dagli uomini, egli chiamava tutti alla speranza d'un regno celeste. Ma forse poteva attentare al potere secolare, perciò gli fanno, per tentarlo, questa questione; se cioè si debba rendere il tributo a Cesare.

Since this Holy Year therefore has provided more than one opportunity to enhance the glory of the kingdom of Christ, we deem it in keeping with our Apostolic office to accede to the desire of many of the Cardinals, Bishops, and faithful, made known to Us both individually and collectively, by closing this Holy Year with the insertion into the Sacred Liturgy of a special feast of the Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This matter is so dear to Our heart, Venerable Brethren, that I would wish to address to you a few words concerning it. It will be for you later to explain in a manner suited to the understanding of the faithful what We are about to say concerning the Kingship of Christ, so that the annual feast which We shall decree may be attended with much fruit and produce beneficial results in the future. It has long been a common custom to give to Christ the metaphorical title of “King,” because of the high degree of perfection whereby he excels all creatures. So he is said to reign “in the hearts of men,” both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind. He reigns, too, in the wills of men, for in him the human will was perfectly and entirely obedient to the Holy Will of God, and further by his grace and inspiration he so subjects our free-will as to incite us to the most noble endeavors. He is King of hearts, too, by reason of his “charity which exceedeth all knowledge.” And his mercy and kindness which draw all men to him, for never has it been known, nor will it ever be, that man be loved so much and so universally as Jesus Christ. But if we ponder this matter more deeply, we cannot but see that the title and the power of King belongs to Christ as man in the strict and proper sense too. For it is only as man that he may be said to have received from the Father “power and glory and a kingdom,” since the Word of God, as consubstantial with the Father, has all things in common with him, and therefore has necessarily supreme and absolute dominion over all things created.

The foundation of this power and dignity of Our Lord is rightly indicated by Cyril of Alexandria. “Christ,” he says, “has dominion over all creatures, a dominion not seized by violence nor usurped, but his by essence and by nature.” His kingship is founded upon the ineffable hypostatic union. From this it follows not only that Christ is to be adored by angels and men, but that to him as man angels and men are subject, and must recognize his empire; by reason of the hypostatic union Christ has power over all creatures. But a thought that must give us even greater joy and consolation is this that Christ is our King by acquired, as well as by natural right, for he is our Redeemer. Would that they who forget what they have cost their Saviour might recall the words: “You were not redeemed with corruptible things, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb unspotted and undefiled.” We are no longer our own property, for Christ has purchased us “with a great price”; our very bodies are the “members of Christ.”
14. Let Us explain briefly the nature and meaning of this lordship of Christ. It consists, We need scarcely say, in a threefold power which is essential to lordship. This is sufficiently clear from the scriptural testimony already adduced concerning the universal dominion of our Redeemer, and moreover it is a dogma of faith that Jesus Christ was given to man, not only as our Redeemer, but also as a law-giver, to whom obedience is due. Not only do the gospels tell us that he made laws, but they present him to us in the act of making them. Those who keep them show their love for their Divine Master, and he promises that they shall remain in his love. He claimed judicial power as received from his Father, when the Jews accused him of breaking the Sabbath by the miraculous cure of a sick man. “For neither doth the Father judge any man; but hath given all judgment to the Son.” In this power is included the right of rewarding and punishing all men living, for this right is inseparable from that of judging. Executive power, too, belongs to Christ, for all must obey his commands; none may escape them, nor the sanctions he has imposed.

Reading 6
This kingdom is spiritual and is concerned with spiritual things. That this is so the above quotations from Scripture amply prove, and Christ by his own action confirms it. On many occasions, when the Jews and even the Apostles wrongly supposed that the Messiah would restore the liberties and the kingdom of Israel, he repelled and denied such a suggestion. When the populace thronged around him in admiration and would have acclaimed him King, he shrank from the honor and sought safety in flight. Before the Roman magistrate he declared that his kingdom was not of this world. The gospels present this kingdom as one which men prepare to enter by penance, and cannot actually enter except by faith and by baptism, which, though an external rite, signifies and produces an interior regeneration. This kingdom is opposed to none other than to that of Satan and to the power of darkness. It demands of its subjects a spirit of detachment from riches and earthly things, and a spirit of gentleness. They must hunger and thirst after justice, and more than this, they must deny themselves and carry the cross. Christ as our Redeemer purchased the Church at the price of his own blood; as priest he offered himself, and continues to offer himself as a victim for our sins. Is it not evident, then, that his kingly dignity partakes in a manner of both these offices? It would be a grave error, on the other hand, to say that Christ has no authority whatever in civil affairs, since, by virtue of the absolute empire over all creatures committed to him by the Father, all things are in his power. Therefore by Our Apostolic Authority We institute the Feast of the Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ to be observed yearly throughout the whole world on the last Sunday of the month of October - the Sunday, that is, which immediately precedes the Feast of All Saints. We further ordain that the dedication of mankind to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to be renewed yearly.

What great matter was it for the King of all worlds to become King of men? For Christ was not King of Israel for exacting of tribute, or arming a host with the sword, and visibly subduing enemies: but King of Israel that he should rule minds, that he should counsel for eternity, that he should bring unto the kingdom of heaven them that believe, hope, and love. Being then, Son of God, the Word by whom all things were made, that it should be his will to be King of Israel is condescension, not preferment, a betokening of mercy, not an increasing of power. For he who was called on earth King of the Jews is in heaven Lord of the Angels. But is Christ King of the Jews only, or also King of the Gentiles? Yea, of the Gentiles also. For when he said in the prophecy: But I am set by him as King upon Sion his holy mountain, preaching the precepts of the Lord, lest on account of the Mount Sion, any should say that he was set as King only of the Jews, he hath straightway subjoined: The Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son: this day I have begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thy inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

The Pharisees had oftentimes been put to confusion, and were not able to find any ground to accuse Him out of anything that He had hitherto said or done. His words and works are, of necessity, faultless, but still, from spite, they set themselves to seek in every direction for some cause to accuse Him. He was calling all to turn away from the corruptions of the world, and the superstitious practices of devotion invented by men, and to fix their hopes upon the kingdom of heaven. They therefore arranged a question calculated to entrap Him into an offense against civil government, namely: “Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar or not?”
