Ráphaël interpretátur medicina Dei. Et debémus notare quod eductio a malo est per tria beneficia, a Raphaéle nobis colláta medicante nos. Educit ergo nos Ráphaël médicus ab infirmitáte animi, inducéndo nos ad amaritúdinem contritiónis; unde in Tobía dicit Ráphaël: Ubi introíeris domum tuam, lini super óculos ejus ex felle. Sic fecit, et vidit. Quare Ráphaël non pótuit ipse fácere? Quia Angelus non dat compunctiónem, sed osténdit viam. Per fel intellígitur amaritúdo contritiónis, quæ sanat óculos interioris mentis; Psalmus: Qui sanat contritos corde. Hoc est optimum collyrium. Sermone di san Bonaventura Vescovo
Sui Santi Angeli Sermone 5, sulla fine
Raffaele significa medicina di Dio. E dobbiamo notare che si può essere liberati dal male mediante tre benefici, che Raffaele ci accorda quando ci guarisce. Dapprima Raffaele, il medico (celeste), ci libera dall'infermità dello spirito, inducendoci al dolore della contrizione; onde Raffaele disse a Tobia Appena sarai entrato in casa tua, ungi gli occhi di lui col fiele. Così fece, e ci vide. Perché non poté far ciò Raffaele stesso? Perché l'Angelo non dà la compunzione, ma mostra solo la via. Per il fiele s'intende dunque l'amarezza della contrizione, che guarisce gli occhi interni della mente, secondo il Salmo: «Egli guarisce i contriti di cuore»Ps. 143,3. Questa contrizione è un ottimo collirio. Nel capo secondo dei Giudei si dice che l'Angelo salì al luogo di quelli che piangevano, e disse al popolo: «Io vi trassi dal paese d'Egitto, feci per voi tali e tanti benefizi; e tutto il popolo pianse, onde quel luogo fu chiamato il luogo dei piangenti» Jud. 2,1 et 5. Carissimi gli Angeli tutto dì ci parlano dei benefizi di Dio, e ce li richiamano alla mente, dicendoci: Chi è che t'ha creato, che t'ha redento? Che hai fatto, chi hai offeso? Se ripensi a questo, non troverai altro rimedio che piangere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Tobia domandò all'Angelo: Di qual famiglia sei tu, e di qual tribù? Ed egli rispose:
* Io sono Azaria, figlio di Anania il grande.
℣. Cerchi la famiglia del mercenario, ovvero il mercenario stesso, che vada col tuo figlio? Ma per non tenerti in pensiero.
℟. Io sono Azaria, figlio di Anania il grande.

Benedizione. Cristo ci doni le gioie della vita eterna.

Lettura 5
In secondo luogo Raffaele ci libera dalla schiavitù del diavolo, penetrandoci della memoria della passione di Cristo; in figura di che è detto nel capo sesto di Tobia: Se metterai un pezzetto di quel cuore sui carboni accesi, il suo fumo scaccerà qualunque specie di demoni. Infatti nel capo ottavo di Tobia si dice, che Tobia mise un pezzetto di esso cuore sui carboni, e Raffaele confinò il demonio nel deserto dell'alto Egitto. Che significa ciò? Non avrebbe potuto Raffaele confinare il demonio, se non si fosse posto quel cuore sui carboni? Era forse il cuore del pesce che dava tanto potere all'Angelo? No certo! Esso non avrebbe potuto nulla, se li non ci fosse stato un mistero. Infatti con ciò ci si fa intendere che non c'è nulla oggi che ci liberi dal potere del diavolo come la Passione di Cristo, la quale procedé dal suo cuore, come da una radice, cioè dalla carità. Il cuore Infatti è la sorgente d'ogni nostro calore vitale. Se dunque metti il Cuore di Cristo, cioè la passione che soffrì, la cui radice è la carità, sorgente del suo ardore, sui carboni, cioè sulla memoria infiammata, subito il demonio sarà allontanato in modo da non poterti più nuocere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Tobia andò per lavarsi i piedi, quando ecco un pesce enorme usci per divorarlo: ed egli spaventato, gridò ad alta voce: Signore, mi viene addosso. Ma l'Angelo gli disse: Prendilo per una branchia, e tiralo a te.
* Sventra questo pesce, e mettiti da parte il suo cuore, il fiele e il fegato: perché sono necessari per utili medicamenti.
℣. E Tobia lo tirò al secca, e quello cominciò a boccheggiare ai suoi piedi; e l'Angelo disse.
℟. Sventra questo pesce, e mettiti da parte il suo cuore, il fiele e il fegato: perché sono necessari per utili medicamenti.

Benedizione. Dio accenda nei nostri cuori il fuoco del suo amore.

In terzo luogo ci libera dalla pena di trovarci in opposizione con Dio, pena che abbiamo incorso offendendo questo Dio, e ciò inducendoci a pregare con insistenza; e a questo si riferisce quel che disse l'Angelo Raffaele a Tobia nel capo dodicesimo: «Quando pregavi piangendo, anche io offrivo la tua preghiera al Signore» Tob. 12,13. Gli Angeli ci riconciliano con Dio, per quanto possono. I nostri accusatori davanti a Dio sono i demoni. Gli Angeli poi ci scusano, allorché offrono le nostre preghiere, che c'inducono a fare con devozione, com'è nel capo ottavo dell'Apocalisse: «Sali il fumo degli aromi nel cospetto del Signore dalla mano dell'Angelo» Apoc. 8,4. Questi profumi che si consumano soavemente, sono le preghiere dei Santi. Vuoi placare Dio che hai offeso? Prega con devozione. Essi offrono a Dio la tua preghiera per riconciliarti con Dio. In san Luca si dice che Cristo, preso da spasimo, pregava intensamente, e che gli apparve un Angelo del Signore a confortarlo Luc. 3,43. Ora tutto ciò avvenne per noi, perché egli non abbisognava del conforto di lui, ma per mostrarci ch'essi assistono volentieri quelli che pregano con devozione, e volontieri li aiutano e confortano, e ne offrono a Dio le preghiere. - Papa Benedetto XV estese a tutta la Chiesa la festa di san Raffaele Arcangelo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Appena entrato in casa tua, disse l'Angelo Raffaele a Tobia, adora subito il Signore Dio tuo, e, ringraziatolo, accostati a tuo padre, e bacialo:

Che maniera è questa di guarire? che mistero c'è sotto? Perché queste cose non furono scritte senza una ragione; ma ci descrivono quasi in figura e in immagine il futuro, affinché, avvenendo improvvisamente qualche cosa di straordinario, non vacillasse in qualche modo la fede di molti uditori. Cos'è dunque questa descrizione? Essa predice il battesimo che doveva conferirsi in seguito, pieno di virtù e d'una grazia immensa, il battesimo che doveva lavare tutti i peccati, e rendere i morti alla vita. Questo battesimo dunque è figurato nella piscina e in molti altri simboli, Per esso il Signore diede dapprima l'acqua, che lava le macchie del corpo, e anche le macchie non reali, ma riputate tali, provenienti dai funerali, dalla lebbra e simili; e nell'antica legge bisognava, in molte circostanze, purificarsi coll'acqua.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Benedite il Dio del cielo, disse l'Angelo Raffaele, e glorificatelo dinanzi a tutti i viventi:

Ma torniamo al nostro soggetto. La Provvidenza ha dunque voluto, come abbiam detto, che l'acqua servisse a togliere prima le macchie del corpo, poi le diverse infermità. E Dio per avvicinarci di più alla grazia del battesimo, non solo toglie le macchie, ma guarisce altresì le malattie. Difatti le immagini che toccano più da vicino la verità, sia nel battesimo, sia nella passione, sia in altri soggetti, sono più chiare di quelle date anticamente. E come i satelliti che sono vicini al re, sono più elevati in dignità di quelli che ne sono distanti; così è avvenuto delle figure. L'Angelo del Signore dunque scendendo agitava l'acqua, e le infondeva una virtù curativa, affinché i Giudei comprendessero che il Signore degli Angeli poteva con più forte ragione guarire tutti i mali dell'anima. Ma, come qui non era la semplice acqua che guariva (altrimenti l'avrebbe fatto sempre) ma operava ciò sotto l'azione dell'Angelo; così pure in noi non è semplicemente l'acqua che opera, ma, dopo aver ricevuto la grazia dello Spirito, allora solo cancella tutti i peccati.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

«Intorno a questa piscina giaceva una gran moltitudine d'infermi, ciechi, zoppi, paralitici in attesa del moto dell'acqua» Joann. 5,3. Ma allora la stessa infermità era sovente di ostacolo a che, chi lo volesse, fosse guarito; ora invece ognuno può avvicinarsi alla piscina spirituale. Dacché non è più un Angelo a muover l'acqua, ma è il Signore degli Angeli che opera tutto. Né possiamo dire: Quando arrivo io, un altro s'è già buttato prima di me. Perché, venisse pure tutto il mondo, la grazia non si consuma per questo, né vien meno la sua efficacia o azione, ma rimane sempre la stessa. E come i raggi del sole ci illuminano ogni giorno, né si consumano, né, servendo a molti, perdono alcunché della loro luce; così, anzi molto meno, si diminuisce l'operazione dello Spirito per la moltitudine di coloro su cui si esercita. Ciò poi avvenne, affinché quelli í quali sapevano che l'acqua guariva le malattie del corpo, e s'erano familiarizzati con questo spettacolo, credessero più facilmente che anche i mali dell'anima possono guarirsi.

From the Sermons of St. Bonaventure, the Bishop
De Sanctis Angelis Sermo 5, sub fine
Raphael means God's healing, and we should observe that the way out of evil lies through three blessing bestowed on us through Raphael's healing. For Raphael the Healer leads us forth from weakness of soul and brings us into the bitterness of contrition; whence in the book of Tobit Raphael says: When thou enterest into thy house, anoint his eyes with gall. He did so, and he saw. Why could not Raphael do this himself? Because an Angel does not bestow compunction, but he shows the way to it. By gall, the bitterness of contrition is to be understood, for it heals the inner eyes of the mind. The Psalmist says: He healeth those that are broken in heart. This is the best eye salve. In the second chapter of the Book of Judges it is written that an angel came up to the place of the weepers, and said to the people: I made you to go up out of Egypt; I have done all of these good things for you: and all the people wept, so that the place was called the Place of the Weepers. Dearly beloved, all day long the Angels are telling us of God's blessings, and recalling them to our minds: Who hath created thee? Who hath redeemed thee? What hast thou done? Whom hast thou offended? When thou considerest this, thine only remedy is to weep.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Tobias asked the Angel: Of what house, or of what tribe, art thou? And he answered and said:

Secondly, Raphael brings us forth from our slavery to the devil, by recalling
Christ's Passion to our mind. There is a figure of the Passion in the sixth chapter of Tobit, where it is said that if a piece of the heart is put on the embers, its smoke will drive out all kinds of devils. It is said in the eighth chapter of Tobit that Tobias put a piece of the heart on the embers, and Raphael bound the devil in the utmost parts of Egypt. What does this mean? Was Raphael unable to bind the devil unless the heart was put on the embers? Surely a fish's heart could not give such strength to an Angel? By no means! It would be impossible unless there was a mystery in this. We are to understand that nothing so frees us from the devil's slavery as the Passion of Christ, which issued from the root of his heart, or of his love. For the heart is the fountain, or hot centre, of all life. Therefore if thou puttest the heart of Christ, that is the Passion, that he underwent, issuing from the root of charity and the fountain of heat, on the embers, that is, on the flame of memory: then immediately the devil will be bound, and he will be unable to hurt thee.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Tobias went out to wash his feet, and behold a great fish went out, and would have devoured him; and he was sore afraid, and cried out with a loud voice, and said: O sir, he assaileth me. And the Angel said unto him: Take him by his gill, and draw him unto thee.

Thirdly Raphael delivers us from God's displeasure, which we incur by transgressing against God; he does this by leading us to instant prayer: and this is what Raphael said to Tobit in the twelfth chapter: When thou didst pray with tears, I did bring your prayers before the Lord. For the Angels reconcile us to God, as far as they are able. The devils are accusers before God, but the angels excuse us, when they offer our prayers, and when they urge us to pray devoutly. In the eighth chapter of the Revelation of St. John it is said: The smoke of the incense ascended up before God out of the Angels hand. This sweet smelling incense is the prayer of the saints. Does thou wish to appease God, whom thou hast offended ? Then pray devoutly. They offer thy prayer, so that they may reconcile thee to God. It is said in the Gospel of St. Luke, that Christ being in an agony, prayed more earnestly, and there appeared an Angel of the Lord strengthening him. And all of this was done for our sake: for he had no need of strengthening, but it was to show that the Angels willingly assist those who pray devoutly, and help and strengthen them, and bring their prayers before God.

What manner of mystery is this? What does it reveal? for it is not written without a purpose: but the future is foretold in figure and similitude lest the unexpected occurrence of a wondrous event should in any way disturb the faith of the hearers. What, then is here described? In the future a baptism was to be given, full of power and of the greatest grace, a baptism that would wash away all sin, that would restore life to dead men. These facts then are depicted figuratively, in the pool and in all the other circumstances. And first in this figure the water is set forth, which washes away stains of the body, and those things that are not actually dirty, though they were thought to be so, such as coming in contact with a corpse, or a leper, and such like: it is to be seen that many things under the old law are cleansed by water, in accordance with this idea.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Angel Raphael said: Bless ye the God of heaven, and confess Him before all living;

But let us now return to the subject. First defilements of the body are washed out, and then God heals various infirmities by means of water. For because God would bring us nearer to the grace of baptism, he not only cleanses defilements but heals diseases. For those figures which come nearest to the reality, in baptism, the Passion, and others are seen more clearly than the older ones. For it is the same with those who form a king's bodyguard: they are more splendidly apparelled than those at the other end of his equipage. And the angel came down and troubled the water, and imbued it with healing power; so that the Jews might learn that the Lord of Angels had far more power to heal all the diseases of the soul. But just as here it was not simply the natural property of the water that healed, (otherwise it would have always have done so) but it happened through the work of the Angel: so it is not simply water that works on us, but after the water has received the grace of the Spirit, then it looses us from all sin.

For the Angel does not trouble the water, but the Lord of Angels brings all things to come to pass. We may no longer say, While I am coming, another steppeth down before me. But even should the whole world come, the grace would not be used up, neither would its power nor effectual working come to an end. For as the sun's rays shine forth each day without burning out, and as they spread abroad without losing any of their light: far less is the operation of the Spirit diminished by the multitudes who receive it. Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 25 Ottobre, Luna 14

A Roma i santi Martiri Crisànto e Daria sua moglie, i quali, dopo aver sofferto molti tormenti per Cristo sotto il Prefetto Celerino, dall'Imperatore Numeriàno furono fatti gettare nell'arenario sulla via Salaria, dove con terra e pietre furono fatti seppellire vivi.
Nello stesso luogo, il natale di san Marcellino, Papa e Martire, il quale, sotto Massimiano, insieme con Claudio, Cirino e Antonino, per la fede di Cristo fu decapitato. Nel qual tempo tanto acerba fu la persecuzione che in un sol mese diciassettemila Cristiani furono coronati col martirio. Però la festa dello stesso san Marcellino, insieme colla festa di san Cleto, Papa e Martire, si celebra il ventisei Aprile.
A Pèrigueux, nella Frància, san Frontóne, il quale, ordinato Vescovo dal beato Piétro Apostolo, insieme col Prete Giorgio convertì a Cristo una gran moltitudine di quella gente, e, chiaro per miracoli, si riposò in pace.
A Roma il natale di quarantasei santi soldati, i quali, insieme battezzati da san Dionisio Papa, subito per ordine dell'Imperatore Claudio furono decapitati, e sepolti sulla via Salaria, dove vennero deposti anche altri centoventuno Martiri, fra i quali furono quattro soldati di Cristo, cioè Teodòsio, Lucio, Marco e Piètro.
A Porto Torres, in Sardègna, i santi Martiri Proto Prete e Gennaro Diacono, i quali, mandati in quell'isola da san Càio Papa, vi furono uccisi al tempo di Diocleziano, sotto il Preside Bàrbaro.
A Costantinopoli la passione dei santi Martirio Suddiacono e Marciano Cantore, i quali furono uccisi dagli eretici, sotto l'Imperatore Costanzo.
A Soissons, in Frància, i santi Martiri Crispino e Crispiniàno, nobili Romani, i quali, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano, sotto il Preside Riziovàro, dopo crudeli tormenti furono trucidati colla spada, e così conseguirono la corona del martirio. I loro corpi furono poi trasportati a Roma, ed onoratamente sepolti nella chiesa di san Lorénzo in Panispérna.
A Firénze la passione del beato Miniato soldato, il quale, sotto il Principe Décio, generosamente combattendo per la fede di Cristo, fu coronato con nobile martirio.
A Bréscia il natale di san Gaudénzio Vescovo, illustre per dottrina e santità.
A Javols, in Frància, sant'Ilàrio Vescovo.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of holy John of Beverley, Archbishop of York, in England, illustrious for his life and miracles, of whom mention is made upon the 7th day of May.
October 25th 2026, the 14th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy martyrs Chrysanthus and Daria his wife, who, after bearing many sufferings under the Prefect Celerinus on account of their confession of Christ, were commanded by the Emperor Numerian to be cast into the sand-pit upon the Salarian Way, and there buried alive under earth and stones.
Likewise at Rome, forty-six holy martyrs, who were all baptized together by Pope Denis, and presently beheaded by order of the Emperor Claudius, and buried on the Salarian Way, where also are laid one hundred, twenty, and one other martyrs, among whom are the four soldiers of Christ Theodosius, Lucius, Mark, and Peter.
At Soissons, in Gaul, the holy martyrs Crispin and Crispinian. These were noble Romans who, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian, after being put to hideous torments under the President Rictiovarus, were slain with the sword, and so gained the crown of martyrdom. Their bodies were afterwards brought to Rome, and honourably buried in the Church of St. Lawrence.
At Florence, the holy soldier Minias, who contended nobly for Christ's faith in the persecution under the Emperor Decius, and was crowned with a glorious crown of martyrdom.
At Torres, in Sardinia, the holy martyrs Protus a Priest, and Januarius a Deacon, who were sent into that island, in the time of the Emperor Diocletian, by holy Pope Caius, and were put to death by the President Barbarus.
At Constantinople, the holy martyrs Martyrius the Sub-Deacon and Martian the Singer, who were slain by the heretics under the Emperor Constantius.
At Rome, the holy Confessor Pope Boniface I.
At Perigueux, in Gaul, holy Fronto, who was ordained Bishop by the Blessed Apostle Peter, and in company with the Priest George turned a great multitude of that people to Christ, and fell asleep in peace, famous for miracles.
