Sermone 18 sui Santi
Oggi, dilettissimi, noi celebriamo nella letizia d'una sola solennità la festa di tutti i Santi; della cui compagnia esulta il cielo, della cui protezione si rallegra la terra, dei cui trionfi s'incorona la santa Chiesa. Più la professione della loro fede fu ferma nei tormenti, più essi sono gloriosi; perché mentre crebbe il combattimento, crebbe pure la gloria dei combattenti, e le diverse torture del martirio accrescono il trionfo, e quanto più crudeli furono i tormenti, tanto più grande è stata la ricompensa. La madre Chiesa cattolica, sparsa dappertutto nei mondo, avendo appreso dallo stesso suo capo Cristo a non temere né gli oltraggi, né la croce, né la morte, ed essendosi sempre più fortificata non colla resistenza, ma colla pazienza, per animare questa legione d'illustri atleti, imprigionati come dei criminali, a sostenere il combattimento collo stesso ardore e pari coraggio, ispirò loro la santa ambizione di un glorioso trionfo.

O madre Chiesa veramente beata d'essere così onorata da segni splendidi della divina bontà, imporporata dal nobile sangue dei Martiri vittoriosi, ammantata della veste bianca dell'inviolabile fedeltà delle Vergini! Ed ora, carissimi, ognuno si sforzi d'acquistare la più grande provvista di titoli a queste due specie di onori, e di meritare o la corona bianca della verginità o la corona porpora del martirio. L'immensa e ineffabile bontà di Dio ha provveduto anche a questo, di non prolungare il tempo del lavoro e del combattimento, e di non farlo né lungo né eterno, ma breve e per così dire momentaneo: che il combattimento e il lavoro fossero per questa vita breve e fugace, le corone invece e le ricompense del merito, per la vita eterna; che il lavoro finisse presto, e la ricompensa dei meriti durasse per sempre; che dopo le tenebre di questo mondo, fosse dato di vedere la più splendida luce, e di possedere una beatitudine più grande che l'acerbità di tutte le sofferenze, come ce l'attesta l'Apostolo stesso quando dice: «I patimenti del tempo presente non hanno a che fare colla futura gloria, che sarà manifestata in noi» Ro. 8,18.

Libro 1 sul Sermone del Signore sulla montagna, al principio
Se si domanda che significhi il monte, si può dire ch'esso significa i precetti della giustizia più alti, perché quelli ch'erano stati dati ai Giudei erano inferiori. Tuttavia è lo stesso Dio, che, regolando con ordine ammirabile l'economia dei tempi, ha dato per mezzo dei santi profeti e per mezzo degli altri suoi servi, dei precetti meno perfetti a un popolo che bisognava ancora contenere col timore; e, per mezzo del suo Figlio, dei precetti più perfetti a un popolo che conveniva affrancare colla carità. Ora se si dànno minori precetti ad anime meno perfette, e maggiori a quelle più perfette, sono sempre dati da colui, che solo sa apprestare al genere umano il rimedio appropriato alla diversità dei suoi bisogni.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Siano cinti i vostri fianchi ed accese nelle vostre mani le lucerne, e
* siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni da nozze.

Lettura 8
Né deve meravigliare che lo stesso Dio creatore del cielo e della terra dia per il regno dei cieli dei precetti maggiori, dopo averne dati dei minori per il regno terreno. Infatti di questa giustizia maggiore dice il profeta: «La tua giustizia come i monti di Dio» Ps. 35,7; il che rappresenta assai bene il monte in cui questa giustizia è insegnata dall'unico e solo maestro capace d'insegnare cose sì sublimi. E insegna seduto, il che appartiene alla dignità di magistero. Questa perifrasi dello scrittore: «Ed egli, aperta la sua bocca» sembra avvertire, colla sua stessa lunghezza, che il discorso dovrà essere alquanto più lungo; purché ciò non sia stato detto per ricordare che, quello stesso che apre ora la sua bocca, nell'antica legge soleva aprire la bocca dei profeti.

Libro 1 Commento al cap. 9 di Matteo
L'ottavo miracolo è quello d'uno dei maggiorenti, che non volendo essere escluso dal mistero della vera circoncisione, domanda che gli sia risuscitata la sua figlia: ma ecco una donna, che soffriva perdita di sangue, penetra attraverso il corteo ed è guarita all'ottavo luogo; così che la figlia del maggiorente esclusa da questo posto, non ha che il nono, conforme a quanto è detto nei Salmi: «L'Etiopia s'affretterà a stendere le sue mani a Dio» (Ps. 67,32»; e: «Quando sarà entrata la totalità dei Gentili, allora sarà salvo tutto Israele» Rom. 11,25.

Dearly beloved brethren: This day we keep, with one great cry of joy, a Feast in memory of all God's holy children; His children, whose presence is a gladness to heaven; His children, whose prayers are a blessing to earth; His children, whose victories are the crown of the Holy Church; His chosen, whose testifying is the more glorious in honour, as the agony in which it was given was the sterner in intensity, for as the dreader grew the battle, so the grander grew the fighters, and the triumph of martyrdom waxed the more incisive by the multiplicity of suffering, and the heavier the torment the heavier the prize. And it is our Mother, the Catholic Church, spread far and wide throughout all this planet, it is she that hath learnt, in Christ Jesus her Head, not to fear shame, nor cross, nor death, but hath waxed lealer and lealer, and, not by fighting, but by enduring, hath breathed into all that noble band who have come up to the bitter starting-post the hope of conquest and glory which hath warmed them manfully to accept the race.

If it be asked what is signified by the mountain, the said mountain may well be understood to figure the higher and greater commandments of righteousness, since those that have been given to the Jews are the lesser. The one God, in an excellent order of times, gave, by His holy Prophets and servants, His lesser commandments unto the people whom it still behoved to be bound by fear, but by His Son He gave the greater unto the people whom it now beseemed to set free by love. But whether it be the lesser to the lesser, or the greater to the greater, all are alike the gift of Him Who alone knoweth what is in each epoch the seasonable medicine of mankind.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
* And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding.

Neither is it marvel that the greater commandments be given touching the kingdom of heaven, and the lesser touching a commonwealth upon earth, since both are alike the gifts of that one God Who is the Maker alike of heaven and of earth. The higher and greater righteousness, then, is that whereof the Prophet saith: Thy righteousness is like the mountains of God. Ps. xxxv. 7. Thus is that Teacher, Who alone can give such teaching, mystically represented as teaching upon a mountain. And when He was set. The attitude of sitting while teaching appertaineth to the majesty of His instruction. His disciples came unto Him nearer in the body, to hear those precepts, by the fulfillment of which they should be nearer in spirit. And He opened His Mouth, and taught them, saying these words appear redundant to the sense. It may possibly be that this more pompous introduction is adopted on account of the exceptional length of the discourse to follow. But it may also be that these words are not really redundant, but the pointed declaration that He now opened His Own Mouth, Who, under the Old Law, had been used to open the mouths of the Prophets.

The eighth miracle took place upon the occasion when a certain ruler, desiring not to be kept out of the mystery of the true circumcision, besought Christ to recall his daughter to life. But a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood, thrust herself in, and her cure occupieth the eighth place, so that the resurrection of the ruler's daughter is postponed and made the ninth in enumeration even as it is written in the Psalms: “Ethiopia shall soon stretch forth her hands unto God.” lxvii. 32. And again: “Blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles is come in and so all Israel shall be saved.” Rom. xi. 25, 26.
