Così dunque in questo terzo grado, che è quello della scienza, si piange la perdita del sommo bene, perché si è attaccati ai beni inferiori. Nel quarto grado poi c'è la sofferenza; e l'animo si applica con ardore per sottrarsi ai funesti piaceri dei quali si sente schiavo. Qui dunque si ha fame e sete della giustizia, ed è necessario molto coraggio; perché non si lascia senza dolore ciò che si possiede con piacere. Nel quinto grado, a quelli che perseverano nella fatica si dà un consiglio per liberarsene; poiché senza il soccorso d'una potenza superiore, nessuno è capace da se stesso di liberarsi da tanti imbarazzanti miserie. Ora, questo consiglio sì giusto, dato a chiunque desidera d'aver l'aiuto di uno più potente, si è di soccorrere uno più debole, allorquando egli può più di lui. Pertanto: «Beati i misericordiosi; perché Dio userà loro misericordia» Matth. 5,7.

Nel sesto grado c'è la purezza del cuore, che valga nella sicura coscienza delle buone opere a contemplare il sommo bene, che solo una intelligenza pura e serena può scorgere. Infine, la settima (beatitudine) è la stessa sapienza, cioè la contemplazione della verità, che purifica tutto l'uomo, e gli dà la somiglianza con Dio, formulata in questi termini: «Beati i pacifici; perché essi saranno chiamati figli di Dio» Matth. 5,9. L'ottava è quasi come la prima, in quanto la dimostra e prova completa e perfetta. Così il regno dei cieli è nominato tanto nella prima: «Beati i poveri di spirito; perché di loro è il regno dei cieli» Matth. 5,3, quanto nell'ottava; «Beati quelli che soffrono persecuzione per la giustizia; perché di loro è il regno dei cieli» Matth. 5,10.

Allora si può dire: «Chi ci dividerà dall'amore di Cristo? Forse la tribolazione, forse l'angustia, forse la fame, forse la nudità, forse il pericolo, forse la spada?» Rom. 8,25. Ci sono dunque sette cose che perfezionano: perché l'ottava glorifica e mostra ciò ch'è perfetto, come se ricominciasse dalla prima, affinché, passando per questi gradi, essa li perfezioni. Mi pare dunque che le sette forme d'operazione dello Spirito Santo, di cui parla Isaia, si riferiscano pure a questi gradi o massime. Ma in un ordine diverso; perché in Isaia l'enumerazione comincia dalle più eccellenti, qua invece dalle meno elevate. Là infatti si comincia dalla sapienza di Dio, e si finisce al timor di Dio; ma a «il timor di Dio è il principio della sapienza» Eccli. 1,10).

First, Blessed are the poor in spirit. Secondly, Blessed are the meek. Thirdly, Blessed are they that mourn. They that are blessed under this third head, having knowledge, do mourn that they possess not yet the Highest Good, which possession belongeth unto the end of their course. But in the fourth place, Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness. Here there is that earnest striving, wherewith the mind doth struggle to tear herself away from those things whose deathful sweetness would make her fain to cling unto them. Here is hungering and thirsting after righteousness, and there is sore need of firmness, for what it is a joy to have, it must be a grief to lose. But the fifth head is the declaration that Blessed are the merciful, and in these words a door of comfort and reward is opened unto the toiling. Entangled in such straits a man can be of no use to himself, unless One That is stronger than he help him; and if he be helped of the Stronger, it is but just that he in turn should help such as is weaker than himself. And so, Blessed are the merciful, for, in their turn, they shall obtain mercy from God.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

* And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding.

Reading 8
Blessed are the pure in heart. This sixth benediction is pronounced upon those hearts which by pure, clear consciousness of good works are able to look to that Highest Good, Which only the clear, calm mind can perceive. Lastly cometh in the seventh place that Blessed are the peacemakers, that is to say, blessed are they who cultivate wisdom, which is the contemplation of the True, since it is the fruit of this contemplation of the True to produce profound and utter internal peace in man, and to catch the reflection of the Divine, this being the idea which is expressed in the words: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. The eighth phrase is a return to the first, since it showeth lowliness of spirit in its aspect of completion and crowning; and thence the kingdom of heaven is the reward mentioned in both places. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for their's is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for their's is the kingdom of heaven.

It seemeth to me also that these heads and sayings have some connection with the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost whereof Isaiah speaketh. But there is a difference of order, for there the highest is taken first, but here the lowest; there the wisdom of God, but here the fear of God, but the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.

November 6th 2026, the 26th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Thinissa, in Africa, (in the fourth century,) the holy martyr Felix, who had made his confession and was reserved for the torture, when on the next day he was found dead in prison, as is told by holy Augustine in his exposition of Ps. cxxvii. made to the people upon his festival.
At Antioch, ten holy martyrs who are recorded to have suffered at the hands of the Saracens.
At Barcelona, the holy martyr Severus, Bishop (of that see,) who for the Catholic faith's sake had a nail driven into his head, and so received the crown of martyrdom.
In Phrygia, holy Atticus.
At Bergues, (before the middle of the eighth century,) holy Winoc, Abbot (of Wormhout,) famous for graces and miracles, who ministered for a long time to the brethren subject unto him.
At Fondi, in Latium, (in the sixth century,) the holy Monk Felix.
At Limoges, in Aquitaine, (in the sixth century,) the holy Confessor Leonard, a disciple of blessed Bishop Remy. He was noble by birth, but chose the life of an hermit, and is famous for his holiness and miracles, but his power hath been most chiefly shown in the freeing of prisoners.
