Lettura 4
Carlo, nacque a Milano dalla nobile famiglia Borromeo, e una luce divina che illuminò la notte della sua nascita, la camera della madre, fece presagire di quale grande santità sarebbe egli stato. Arruolatosi fin da fanciullo alla milizia clericale, e provvisto poi di una abbazia, avvertì il padre di non impiegarne la rendita per la sua famiglia; e allorquando ne divenne lui l'amministratore, tutto quello che gli avanzava, lo distribuiva ai poveri. Giovanetto studiò le arti liberali a Pavia. Fu sì geloso della castità, che respinse con invitta costanza donne impudiche inviategli più volte per fargli perdere la purezza, A ventitré anni aggregato da suo zio Pio IV al sacro collegio dei cardinali, vi si distinse per insigne pietà e splendore di ogni virtù. Poco dopo dallo stesso creato arcivescovo di Milano, s'applicò con ogni sollecitudine a governare la chiesa affidatagli, secondo le riforme del concilio di Trento, ch'era stato terminato proprio allora, grazie soprattutto alle sue cure; e, per riformare i costumi sregolati del suo popolo, oltre la frequente celebrazione di sinodi, mostrò in se stesso un modello d'eminente santità. Lavorò moltissimo ad estirpare l'eresia dal paese dei Resi e degli Svizzeri, convertendone moltissimi alla fede cristiana.

Lettura 5
La carità di quest'uomo risplendé particolarmente allorché, venduto il suo principato d'Orlo, ne donò, in un sol giorno, ai poveri l'intero prezzo di quaranta mila scudi d'oro. Né con minore carità ne distribuì altri ventimila, che gli erano stati legati. Rinunziò alle larghe rendite ecclesiastiche, ond'era stato ricolmo dallo zio, non ritenendosi se non quanto gli era necessario per i propri usi e per soccorrere i poveri. Per nutrire i quali, durante la peste che infierì a Milano, alienò tutto il mobilio di sua casa, senza riservarsi neppure il letto, dormendo di poi su una nuda tavola; visitava spesso gli appestati, li sollevava con affetto di padre e, amministrando loro i sacramenti della Chiesa colle proprie mani, li consolava in modo meraviglioso. Intanto facendosi mediatore presso Dio con umilissime preghiere, a stornare la sua collera, ordinò una processione pubblica, prendendovi parte con una fune al collo, nudi i piedi e insanguinati per gli inciampi, portando una croce, e offrendo se stesso come vittima per i peccati del popolo. Fu energico difensore della libertà della Chiesa. Ma appunto perché sollecito nel ristabilire la disciplina, dei sediziosi gli spararono contro, mentre pregava, una schioppettata, rimanendone illeso per mera protezione divina.

Lettura 6
Fu di un'astinenza ammirabile; digiunava spessissimo in pane ed acqua, e talvolta si contentava di soli lupini. Veglie notturne, asprissimo cilicio, frequenti discipline domavano il suo corpo. Fu amantissimo dell'umiltà e della dolcezza. Benché occupato in gravissimi negozi, non tralasciò mai l'orazione e la predicazione della parola di Dio. Edificò molte chiese, monasteri e collegi. Scrisse più opere, assai utili soprattutto per l'istruzione dei vescovi; ed è pure per sua opera che uscì il catechismo dei parroci. Infine, si ritira nella solitudine del monte Varano, dove si trovane scolpite delle tavole rappresentanti al vivo i misteri della passione del Signore; e là, vivendo alcuni giorni una vita rude per volontaria mortificazione, ma dolce per la meditazione delle sofferenze di Cristo, fu colpito da febbre. Ritornato a Milano, e aggravandosi il male, coperto di cenere e di cilizio, e fissi gli occhi all'immagine del Crocifisso, se ne andò in cielo a quarantasette anni d'età, il 3 Novembre dell'anno del Signore 1584, Glorioso per miracoli, il sommo Pontefice Paolo V l'iscrisse nel novero dei Santi.

Omelia 9 sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, ci avverte di considerare diligentemente che noi, che abbiamo ricevuto in questo mondo più degli altri, saremo poi giudicati più severamente dall'autore del mondo. Infatti più i doni sono numerosi, e tanto più grande è il conto che bisogna renderne. Le grazie dunque che si ricevono, devono rendere ciascuno tanto più umile e più pronto a servire a Dio, quanto più si vide obbligato a renderne conto. Ecco un uomo che, nel mettersi in viaggio, chiama i suoi servi e divide tra loro i talenti da far fruttare. Ma dopo molto tempo ritorna per chiederne conto, e ricompensa del guadagno fatto coloro che li hanno impiegati bene, mentre condanna il servo che fu negligente nel farli fruttare.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,

Chi è dunque quest'uomo che si mette in viaggio, se non il nostro Redentore che, col corpo che aveva preso, se ne andò in cielo? La terra è infatti il luogo proprio della carne; ed essa è comò condotta a mettersi in viaggio quando dal nostro Redentore viene portata in cielo. Ma, come quest'uomo, egli, prima di mettersi in viaggio, consegnò ai suoi servi i propri beni, perché concesse ai suoi fedeli dei doni spirituali. E ad uno diede cinque talenti, ad un altro due, ad un altro uno. Cinque sono infatti i sensi del corpo, cioè: la vista, l'udito, il gusto, l'odorato e il tatto. Con i cinque talenti dunque viene rappresentato il dono dei cinque sensi, cioè la conoscenza delle cose esteriori ; con i due talenti invece vengono indicati l'intelletto e l'azione; con l'unico talento infine si indica soltanto l'intelletto.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Siano cinti i vostri fianchi ed accese nelle vostre mani le lucerne, e

Charles, of the noble family of Borromeo, was born on the 2nd day of October, in the year of our Lord 1538, at (the Castle of Arona, fourteen miles from) Milan. In foretoken of his holy life, God caused a bright light to shine by night over the chamber where his mother lay in travail. As soon as his age would allow him, he received the tonsure. When he was twelve years old, he was made Abbot (of the rich Benedictine Abbey of St. Gratinian and St. Felin,) but reminded his father that the revenues thereof were not to be used as mere family property. His father, to whom the administration of these revenues fell during his son's non-age, still gave them forthwith over to him, and whatever was left over, he gave to the poor. While he was young he studied letters at Pavia. He kept his purity thoroughly, so that he scared away the unclean women, of whom many were set upon him, to overthrow his self-control. In the twenty-third year of his age, his uncle Pius IV. made him a Cardinal, in which dignity he was a burning and shining light of godliness and all graces before the whole of the Sacred College. About forty days afterwards the same Pope created him Archbishop of Milan. As such it was his great desire to order the Church committed to his charge in accordance with the requirements of the most holy Council of Trent, which was in great part by his labours brought to a conclusion. To raise up the degraded lives of the people, he oftentimes held Synods, but himself set an example of deep godliness. He worked earnestly to purge the parts about the Alps and borders of Switzerland of heresy, and brought many of the heretics to the Christian faith.

Charity was the brightest mark of his life. His principality of Oria, (in the kingdom of Naples,) he sold for forty thousand crowns, and gave the whole sum to the poor in one day. Twenty thousand crowns being left him as a legacy (by Virginia, widow of Count Frederick Borromeo,) he gave the whole to the poor. The incomes of the benefices wherewith he had been loaded by his uncle, he spent upon the needs of the poor, except what he used for himself. When the plague grievously raged in Milan, he gave up to the sick poor the furniture of his own house, even to his own bedding, and thenceforward slept upon the boards. He constantly visited the sick, cheered them by his fatherly kindness, and wonderfully comforted them, ministering to them with his own hands the Sacraments of the Church. At the same time he drew near to plead for them with God in lowly entreaty, and ordered a public Procession wherein he walked himself carrying a Cross, with a rope halter round his neck, and his bare feet bleeding from the stones, and fain to turn away the Divine anger by offering himself as a scapegoat for the sins of his people. He was a stout defender of the freedom of the Church. But in the Church he was an earnest reformer of discipline, and once, when he was engaged in prayer, (the paid agent of) some conspirators took a shot at him with a blunderbuss, but, though the ball struck him, the power of God kept him unharmed.

He was remarkable for his abstinence. He very often fasted upon nothing but bread and water, and sometimes nothing but lupines. He tamed his body by depriving himself of sleep, by very rough haircloth, and by constant scourging. He was an earnest practiser of lowliness and meekness. However much he was taken up with business, he never gave himself relaxation from prayer and from preaching the word of God. He built many Churches, convents, and schools. He wrote much matter, useful more especially for the good of Bishops. The publication of the Parish Priests' Catechism was due to his care. In October, 1584, he withdrew himself, for the purpose of making a retreat, to (what is called) the Sacro Monte of Varallo, an hill whereon (many sacred subjects and especially) the incidents of the Lord's sufferings are represented in life-size groups of coloured figures. On Oct. 24 he was taken ill of a (tertian) ague, ~but concealed it, and lived there for some days a life of torture by voluntary suffering, but of sweetness by thoughts of Christ's woes. After his return to Milan, (which he reached in a litter upon All Souls' Day,) his sickness became hopeless, and early in the night between the 3rd and 4th days of November, in the 47th year of his own age, and in that of our Lord 1584, covered with ashes and sackcloth, and with his eyes fixed upon the image of Christ crucified, he exchanged earth for heaven. He was famous for miracles, and Pope Paul V. numbered him among the Saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, this Lesson from the Holy Gospel moveth us to take good heed lest we, who are seen in this world to have received more than others, should thereby bring ourselves into greater condemnation from the Maker of this world. To whom much is given, of the same is much required. Therefore, let him that receiveth much, strive to be all the more lowly, and all the more ready to do God service, for his very gifts’ sake, knowing that he will be obliged to give account thereof. Behold, a man, travelling into a far country, calleth his own servants, and delivereth unto them talents, to the end that they may trade therewith. After a long time, the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them, and to them that have done well He rendereth a reward of their labours, but that servant which was careless of his master’s work He condemneth.

What other, then, is that man travelling into a far country but our Redeemer, Who is gone up from us into heaven in that Flesh Which He had taken into Himself? For the earth is the home of the Flesh, Which travelleth into a far country when our Redeemer giveth It a place in heaven. But that man travelling into a far country delivered unto his servants his goods and so doth our Redeemer give spiritual gifts unto His faithful people. “And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one.” There are five bodily senses that is, sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. By the five talents therefore are signified the five senses, that is, outward knowledge. By the two, wit and work. And by the figure of the one talent, understanding, which is alone.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 5th 2026, the 25th day of the Moon, are commemorated the holy Zacharias, Priest and Prophet, father of the blessed Baptist John, and holy Elizabeth, mother of the same most holy Forerunner.
Upon the same day, were born into the better life:

At Terracina, in Campania, the holy martyrs Felix, a Priest, and Eusebius, a Monk. This Eusebius buried the holy martyrs Julian and Caesarius, and turned many to believe in Christ who were baptized by the holy Priest Felix. He and Felix were therefore tried together and both led before the seat of the judge, where neither was overcome, but were committed to prison together, and the same night, since they refused to sacrifice, they were beheaded.

Salmo 55 [1]
55:2 Abbi pietà di me, o Dio, perché l'uomo mi calpesta; * assalendomi tutto il giorno mi tormenta.
55:3 Tutti i giorni i miei nemici mi calpestano; * perché sono molti che combattono contro di me.
55:4 Nel pieno giorno sarò in timore: * ma io spererò in te.
55:5 In Dio loderò i discorsi a me fatti, in Dio ho posta la mia speranza: * non temerò quel che mi possa fare la carne.
55:6 Tutto il giorno esecravano le mie parole: * tutti i loro pensieri erano rivolti contro di me al male.
55:7 Si uniranno insieme, e si nasconderanno: * spieranno i miei passi.
55:8 Come hanno sperato di togliermi la vita, tu in nessun modo li salverai: * nella tua ira tu disperderai i popoli, o Dio.
55:9 Ti ho esposta la mia vita: * tu hai raccolto le mie lacrime al tuo cospetto,
55:9 come anche nella tua promessa. * Allora i miei nemici volteranno indietro:
55:10 In qualunque giorno io t'invochi, * ecco io conosco che tu sei il mio Dio.
55:11 In Dio loderò la parola, nel Signore loderò la promessa * in Dio ho posta la mia speranza, non temerò quel che possa farmi un uomo.
55:12 Sono presso di me, o Dio, i voti che ti ho fatto, * le lodi che io ti scioglierò:
55:13 Perché hai salvato l'anima mia dalla morte, e i miei piedi dalla caduta: * affinché io sia accetto dinanzi a Dio nella luce dei vivi.

56:2 Abbi pietà di me, o Dio, abbi pietà di me, * perché in te confida l'anima mia.
56:2 E all'ombra delle tue ali io spererò, * sino a che passi l'iniquità.
56:3 Io griderò a Dio Altissimo, * a Dio che mi benefica.
56:4 Mandò dal cielo a liberarmi: * coprì di vergogna quelli che mi conculcavano.
56:4 Dio mandò la sua misericordia e la sua verità, * e liberò l'anima mia di mezzo ai giovani leoni; mi addormentai conturbato.
56:5 I figli degli uomini hanno per denti lance e saette, * e per lingua una spada acuta.
