Là ci sarà uno splendore perenne, assai differente da quello di quaggiù, e tanto più chiaro, quanto più felice; e questa città, come leggiamo, non avrà più bisogno della luce del sole, perché «la illuminerà il Signore onnipotente, e l'Agnello n'è la lampada» Apoc. 21, 23. Là «i Santi brilleranno come stelle per tutta l'eternità, e quelli che istruiscono le moltitudini saranno come lo splendore del firmamento» Dan. 12,3.

Libro 1 sul Sermone del Signore sulla montagna, cap, 2
«Beati i puri di cuore; perché essi vedranno i Dio» Matth. 5,8. Quale stoltezza dunque cercare Dio con questi occhi corporali, mentre lo si vede col cuore, secondo ch'è scritto altrove: «Cercatelo colla semplicità del cuore» Sap. 1,1. Perché cuore puro e cuore semplice è la stessa cosa. E come questa luce non si può vedere, se non si hanno occhi sani, così neppure Dio si vede, se ciò onde si può vederlo non è puro. «Beati i pacifici, perché saranno chiamati figli di Dio» Matth. 5,9. La perfezione consiste in una pace, in cui non ci siano contrarietà; e perciò i pacifici sono figli di Dio, perché in loro nulla resiste a Dio, e certamente i figli devono rassomigliare al padre.

Ora sono pacifici in se stessi quelli che, moderando tutti i movimenti del loro cuore e assoggettandoli alla ragione, cioè all'intelligenza e allo spirito, e domanda le concupiscenze carnali, diventano così il regno di Dio. Nel qual regno ogni cosa è ordinata in modo, che la parte eminente e principale dell'uomo ha il comando, senza che il resto, che ci è comune colle bestie, opponga resistenza; e a sua volta la parte eminente dell'uomo, cioè l'intelligenza e la ragione, riconosce una autorità maggiore, vale a dire la stessa Verità, l'unigenito Figlio di Dio. Perché {lo spirito umano) non può comandare agli appetiti inferiori, se non è sottomesso lui stesso all'autorità superiore. Everywhere there, all things are tranquil and quiet. Perpetual is the splendour there; not like unto the sunlight which we know here, but a light which is the brighter, as it is the more blessed. For that city, as saith Scripture, needeth not the light of the sun, because the Lord Almighty doth enlighten it by the Lamb which is the Light thereof. There the Saints shall shine like as the brightness of the firmament, and they that have turned many to righteousness, as the stars, for ever and ever.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. How foolish therefore be they that seek God with their outward eyes, since it is in the heart that he is seen. Thus it is written elsewhere: In simplicity of heart seek him. For a pure heart is one that hath the simplicity of single-mindedness. And just as light can be seen only insofar as the bodily eyes have clear vision, so God can be seen only insofar as the heart is clear by reason of its single-mindedness of purpose. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God. Peace is perfect where there is no strife. And the children of God are peacemakers because there is nothing in them which withstandeth God. And surely children ought to be like unto their father.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
* And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding.

Reading 8
Peacemakers are all those that have peace within themselves. That is, those who have set all the passions of their souls in order. This they do by subjecting their passions to reason, namely, to the mind and spirit. Thus, by conquering their fleshly desires, they have made of themselves a little kingdom of God. In this kingdom, everything is ordered into an harmonious whole, by virtue of the fact that the element which chief and pre-eminent in man (namely, mind or reason) ruleth, without resistance, over the elements which we have in common with the beasts. And in this fashion, the element of mind or reason, which is pre-eminent in man, is made subject to something pre-eminent to itself, namely, the Truth, even the Only-Begotten Son of God. For no one is able to govern except he be subject unto the higher powers. Now, herein we have set forth the peace which is given on earth to men of good-will. This is the life of one who is thoroughly and completely wise.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

From a kingdom such as this, which is a state of complete peace and order, the prince of this world is cast out. For he is one that can rule only through perversity and disorder. When this peace hath been inwardly established and confirmed, then whatever persecutions the prince of this world, who is now cast out, shall stir up from without, he only increaseth the glory which doth redound to God. For he is unable to tear down anything in that which is so upbuilt. And by the failure of his machinations, he doth but make manifest the strength with which it hath been inwardly built. Hence it followeth: Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

San Carlo Borroméo Cardinale, Vescovo di Milano e Confessore, il quale volò in cielo nel giorno precedente.
A Bologna i santi Martiri Vitale e Agricola, dei quali il primo fu già servo del secondo, quindi suo compagno e collega nel martirio.
Contro lo stesso Vitale poi i persecutori esercitarono ogni genere di tormenti, così che nel suo corpo non vi era alcun luogo senza piaga, i quali patimenti tollerando egli pazientemente, in orazione rese lo spirito a Dio; Agricola poi fu da loro confitto in croce con moltissimi chiodi, e così fu ucciso. Sant'Ambrogio riferisce che, trovandosi presente alla loro traslazione, raccolse i chiodi del Martire, il sangue glorioso ed il legno della croce, e li pose sotto i sacri altari.
Nel monastero di Cerfroid, nel territorio di Meaux, il natale di san Felice di Valois, Sacerdote e Confessore, Fondatore dell'Ordine della santissima Trinità per la redenzione degli schiavi. La sua festa, per decreto del Papa Innocénzo undecimo, si celebra il venti di questo mese.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 4th 2026, the 24th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Milan, (in the year 1584,) holy Charles Borromeo, Cardinal Archbishop of that city, eminent for holiness and famous for miracles, whose name Paul V enrolled among those of the Saints.
At Bologna, the holy martyrs Vitalis and Agricola. Vitalis was a slave belonging to Agricola, to whom, in suffering martyrdom, (in the year 304,) he became an equal and a companion. Upon Vitalis the persecutors exercised every kind of torment, until there was no place in his body without some wound. He bore all steadfastly, and gave up his soul in prayer to God. While they were nailing Agricola with many nails to a cross they thereby killed him. Holy Ambrose was present at the translation of their bodies, and saith that he gathered together the nails of this martyr, his victorious blood, and the wood of his cross, and buried them under the holy altar.
On the same day, the holy martyrs Philologus and Patrobas, disciples of the holy Apostle Paul. (According to the Greek tradition Patrobas was Bishop of Pozzuoli and then of Naples, and Philologus of Sinope, in Paphlagonia.) At Autun, the holy martyr Proculus.
In the Vexin, the holy martyr Clarus, a Priest.
At Ephesus, under the Emperor Aurelian, the holy martyr Porphyry.
At Myra, in Lycia, under the President Libanius, the holy martyrs Nicander, Bishop (of that see,) and Hermas, a Priest.
Upon the same day, the holy Pierius, a Priest of Alexandria, profoundly learned in the Scriptures of God, unblemished in life, and for Christian philosophy's sake stripped nearly of all things, and unattached. He taught the people of Alexandria admirably while Theonas ruled that Church in the time of the Princes Carus and Diocletian, and published diverse treatises. After the persecution was over he spent the rest of his life at Rome, and there fell asleep in peace, (at the beginning of the fourth century.)
At Rodez, in Gaul, (in the year 440,) the blessed Amantius, Bishop (of that see,) whose life remains glorious on account of his holiness and miracles.
In Bithynia, (in the year 846,) the holy Abbot Joannicius.
At Albe-Royale, in Hungary, (in the year 1031,) the blessed Confessor Emeric, son of holy Stephen, King of Hungary.
In the monastery of Cerfroi, in the country of Meaux, (in the year 1212,) holy Felix de Valois, Founder of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity for the Redemption of Captives, whose feast is kept by decree of Innocent XI upon the 20th day of this same month of November, but by us upon the 26th day of the same.
At Trier, (in the year 780,) the holy Virgin Modesta.
