Chiunque ammira con religioso amore i meriti dei Santi, e celebra con ripetute lodi le glorie dei giusti, deve imitarne la santa vita e la giustizia; perché se diletta di esaltare il merito di un Santo, deve stare a cuore ancora di darsi fedelmente, come lui, al servizio di Dio. Perciò o imitarlo, se si loda; o astenersi dal lodarlo, se non si vuole imitare: affinché chi loda un altro, si renda degno di lode; e chi ammira í meriti dei Santi, divenga lui stesso ammirabile per santità di vita. Perché, se noi amiamo le anime giuste e fedeli, per la ragione che ne stimiamo la giustizia e la fede, possiamo noi pure diventare ciò che sono essi, se anche noi facciamo quello che loro hanno fatto.

Conveniva che la prima beatitudine parlasse del regno dei cieli, essendo esso il possesso dell'anima ragionevole giunta al sommo grado di sapienza e di perfezione. Pertanto fu detto; «Beati i poveri di spirito; perché di loro è il regno dei cieli»Matth. 5,3; come se si dicesse: «II principio della sapienza è il timor di Dio» Ecccli. 1,16. L'eredità è data ai mansueti, come a figli che cercano con pietà l'eredità del Padre: «Beati i mansueti; perché essi possederanno la terra» Matth. 5,4. A quelli che piangono, è promessa la consolazione, come ad afflitti che sanno ciò che hanno perduto e in che abisso son caduti «Beati quelli che piangono; perché essi saranno consolati» Matth. 5,5. Ai misericordiosi è promessa la misericordia in quanto seguono il ragionevole e ottimo consiglio di non rifiutare ai più deboli quanto essi vogliono da uno più potente: «Beati i misericordiosi; perché Dio avrà misericordia di loro» Matth. 5,7. Ai puri di cuore, la facoltà di vedere Dio, in quanto hanno l'occhio dell'intelletto assai limpido per discernere le cose eterne: «Beati i puri di cuore; perché essi vedran Dio» Matth. 5,8. Ai pacifici è attribuita la divina somiglianza, in quanto sono perfettamente saggi, e formati ad immagine dì Dio per la rigenerazione dell'uomo rinnovato: «Beati i pacifici; perché essi saranno chiamati figli di Dio» Matth. 5,9. E tutte queste perfezioni possono completarsi in questa vita, nella misura che, come crediamo, lo furono negli Apostoli. Perché quanto a quel cambiamento assoluto e trasformazione tutta angelica promessaci dopo questa vita, non ci sono parole che possono esprimerla.

Questa ottava sentenza, che richiama la prima e che proclama l'uomo perfetto, è forse figurata e nella circoncisione praticata nell'antico Testamento dopo l'ottavo giorno dalla nascita; e nella risurrezione del Signore dopo il sabato, ch'è al tempo stesso l'ottavo giorno e il primo della settimana; e nella celebrazione delle ottave, durante le quali celebriamo le feste nell'era della rigenerazione dell'uomo nuovo; e nel numero stesso di Pentecoste. Dacché al numero sette moltiplicato sette, che dà quarantanove, si aggiunge un ottavo giorno per fare cinquanta. E così si torna quasi da capo, e in questo (ottavo) giorno, in cui fu inviato lo Spirito Santo, noi siamo introdotti nel regno dei cieli, messi in possesso dell'eredità, consolati, saziati, trattati con misericordia, purificati, ristabiliti nella pace. E. così perfezionati, sopportiamo per la verità e per la giustizia tutte le persecuzioni che ci vengono dal di fuori.

He that wondereth with reverential love at the mighty deeds of the holy, he that hath oftentimes on his tongue praises for the glory of the righteous, let such an one copy their holy lives and their righteousness; for if any take pleasure in the work of a Saint, he ought to take pleasure in serving God as that Saint served Him. If he praiseth the Saint, he ought to imitate him, and if he is not ready to imitate him, he ought not to praise him. Let him that praiseth another make himself worthy of a like praise, and if he be in admiration of the Saints, let his own admirable life reflect the holiness of theirs. If we love the good and leal because they are good and leal, let us not forget that we can be what they are, by doing as they did.

Then unto the meek is given an inheritance, as the legacy of a father to dutiful children. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Thirdly, there is comfort for such as mourn, knowing what they have lost, and what encompasseth them. Blessed are they that mourn (now), for they shall be comforted. Fourthly, the hungry and thirsty are promised that they shall be filled, a refreshment for the strugglers for life, and for the weary. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Mercy is proclaimed unto the merciful, as unto them who have taken the true and best counsel how to obtain from Him That is Mightier than they what they that are weaker than they obtain from them. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy from God. Unto the pure in heart it pertaineth to see God, for their eye is clear to take in the things eternal. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. To the peacemakers it is given to be in the likeness and image of God, for these are the perfectly wise, created anew in the image of God, by the regeneration of the new man. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. The foregoing are forms of blessedness which we believe can be thoroughly attained in this life. The Apostles, for instance, did, we believe, attain them. As for that entire change into the likeness of Angels, which is promised us when this life is done, no words can set it forth.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for their's is the kingdom of heaven. In this eighth word, which returneth back again to the fountainhead and setteth forth the perfect crown of human blessedness, is contained perchance a (mystic) connection with the fact that it was upon the eighth day that the old Law commanded that circumcision should be performed, and that it was upon the day next after the Sabbath (being the seventh day) that the Lord rose again, the day whereon He so rose being thus the eighth day, (had a week contained more than seven days,) and the first day (as a matter of fact.) There is perchance also a connection with the fact that we observe eight days ~(being from the Lord's Day whereon He rose to the Lord's Day in White both inclusive,) in honour of the creation of the new man. And yet again there is perchance a connection with the number contained in (the name of) the Feast of Pentecost, (which is, being interpreted, the Feast of the FiftiethDay.) For this number of fifty days is reckoned (from that of the offering of the Sheaf of the Passover) by counting (seven weeks, that is to say,) seven multiplied by seven, which is forty-nine, and thereto adding one, which joined with seven maketh eight, and so making full fifty. And thus borne backward to our fountainhead, the day whereon the Holy Ghost was sent down, we are borne unto the kingdom of heaven, and inherit the earth, and are comforted, and are filled, and obtain mercy, and are made pure, and are set at peace. And when we have thus been perfected within, we bear for truth's and righteousness' sake any troubles that may come upon us from without.

Ottava di tutti i Santi.
A Roma, sulla via Labicana, a tre miglia dalla città, la passione dei santi Martiri Claudio, Nicostrato, Sinforiàno, Castòrio e Simplicio, i quali, prima messi in prigione, quindi crudelissimamente tormentati cogli scorpioni, finalmente, non potendo essere smossi dalla fede di Cristo, da Diocleziano furono fatti precipitare nel fiume.
Nello stesso luogo, sulla via Labicana, il natale dei santi Quattro Coronati fratelli, cioè Sevèro, Severiàno, Carpóforo e Vittorino, i quali, sotto il medesimo Imperatore, furono percossi fino alla morte con flagelli piombati. Non essendosi allora potuto conoscere i loro nomi, che, dopo alcuni anni, si seppero per divina rivelazione, fu stabilito che si celebrasse l'anniversario di essi, insieme con quei cinque, sotto il nome dei santi Quattro Coronati; uso che perseverò nella Chiesa, anche dopo la rivelazione dei loro nomi.
Così pure a Roma Sant'Adeodato primo. Papa, il quale fu di tanto merito, che con un bacio guarì un lebbroso dalla lebbra.

Martyrology {anticipated}
Tomorrow is the Octave of All Saints.
November 8th 2026, the 28th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, upon the Lavican Way, upon the third milestone from the city, the holy martyrs Claudius, Nicostratus, Symphorian, Castorius, and Simplicius, they were first cast into prison, then heavily lashed with loaded scourges, and as their faith in Christ could not be shaken the Emperor Diocletian commanded that they should be cast into the river.
Likewise at Rome, upon the Lavican Way, the holy martyrs called the "Crowned" brethren, Severus, Severian, Carpophorus, and Victorinus, who under the aforesaid Emperor Diocletian were flogged to death with scourges loaded with lead. Their names were afterwards revealed by the Lord after diverse years, but as they were unknown at the time it was ordained that on the anniversary of their deaths they should be commemorated, along with the five above mentioned, under the title of the Four that were Crowned, and the said custom hath still gone on in the Church ever since their names have been known.
At Rome, (in the year 618,) the holy Pope Deusdedit, whose grace was such that by his kiss he made a leper clean.
At Bremen, (about the year 789,) holy Willehad, first Bishop of that see. He spread the Gospel in Friesland and Saxony along with holy Boniface, whose disciple he was.
At Soissons, in Gaul, (in the year 1118,) holy Godfrey, Bishop of Amiens, a man of great holiness.
At Verdun, the holy Confessor Maurus, Bishop (of that see.)
