Se qualcuno ti viene a dire non digiunare spesso per non nuocere alla tua salute, non credergli e non ascoltarlo perché è il nemico che ti suggerisce questo per mezzo di cotali. Ricordati di ciò che la Scrittura ci narra di Daniele, dei tre fanciulli e degli altri giovanetti menati schiavi a Babilonia dal re Nabucodonosor, quale avendo ordinato che fossero serviti delle vivande della sua mensa regale e si facesse loro bere del suo vino, Daniele e quei tre fanciulli non vollero contaminarsi della mensa del re, ma dissero all'eunuco che era incaricato della loro cura: Dacci dei legumi, e noi staremo bene. Ma l'eunuco rispose loro: Io ho paura che il re, il quale vi ha assegnato il cibo e la bevanda, non mi punisca s'egli vedesse per sorte i vostri volti più squallidi di quelli degli altri fanciulli che sono nutriti dalla mensa reale.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Chiunque pertanto è tormentato dallo spirito immondo, tenga ciò presente ed usi di questa medicina, voglio dire del digiuno, e subito lo spirito maligno, respinto, s'allontanerà, perché teme la forza del digiuno. Poiché niente piace di più ai demoni quanto l'eccesso nel mangiare e nel bere e le delicatezze del corpo. Nel digiuno c'è una gran forza, e per esso si compiono cose grandi e meravigliose. Del resto, come mai gli uomini potrebbero fare cose tanto meravigliose e si opererebbero per loro mezzo dei portenti, e come Dio restituirebbe per loro mezzo la salute agli infermi, se non in grazia appunto delle pratiche spirituali dell'umiltà di cuore e della loro santa vita? Poiché il digiuno è il cibo degli Angeli; e, chi se ne nutrisce, deve stimarsi dell'ordine angelico.

Libro delle Questioni Evangeliche al c. 11 di Matteo, t. 4
Allorché i pastori della Chiesa si mostravano negligenti, o gli Apostoli furono colti dal sonno della morte, venne il diavolo, e sparse nel campo già seminato quelli che il Signore chiama figli perversi. Ma si domanda, se essi siano gli eretici, o quei cattolici che vivono male? Difatti anche gli eretici possono dirsi figli perversi, perché nati dallo stesso seme del Vangelo, e portando il nome di Cristo si sono lasciati trascinare dai loro erronei giudizi a false dottrine.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Ma perché li dice seminati in mezzo al grano, sembra quasi che qui vengano designati (i cristiani) d'una stessa comunione. Ma siccome perché il Signore stesso ha interpretato questo campo, non per la Chiesa, ma per questo mondo, qui vanno ben intesi gli eretici, che in questo mondo si trovano mescolati coi buoni non per i legami d'una sola e medesima Chiesa o d'una stessa fede, ma per la società del solo nome cristiano che loro è comune. Ma quelli che sono cattivi nel seno della stessa fede, sono piuttosto simili alla paglia che alla zizzania perché la paglia ha di comune col frumento la radice e il gambo.

It is possible to call even the heretics a seed of evil-doers because they have sprung up from the seed of the Gospel, and been begotten in the Name of Christ, though afterwards they have turned after crooked ways and lying doctrines.

Ad Amaséa, nel Ponto, il natale di san Teodoro soldato, il quale, al tempo dell'Imperatore Massimiàno, per la confessione della fede cristiana, fu crudelmente percosso e messo in prigione; quindi, essendogli apparso il Signore che lo esortò ad agire con costanza e coraggio, rimase confortato; da ultimo, dopo essere stato sospeso sull'eculeo e scarnificato, tanto che gli si vedevano le viscere, fu gettato nel fuoco per essere bruciato. Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow is kept the feast of the Dedication of the Cathedral Church of the Saviour at Rome, (in the year 324).
November 9th 2026, the 29th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Amasea, in Pontus, the holy soldier Theodore. In the time of the Emperor Maximian he was heavily flogged and cast into prison for his profession of the Christian faith, in prison the Lord appeared unto him, and bade him be steadfast and do manfully, then he was taken out and stretched upon the rack and torn with hooks until his inner parts were seen, and lastly he was thrown into the fire. Holy Gregory of Nyssa hath told his praises in a noble discourse.
At Tyana, in Cappadocia, under the Emperor Diocletian, the holy martyr Orestes.
At Thessalonica, under the Emperor Maximian, the holy martyr Alexander.
At Bourges, the holy Confessor Ursinus, who was ordained at Rome by the successors of the Apostles, and sent to that city as the first Bishop thereof.
At Naples, in Campania, holy Agrippinus, Bishop (of that see,) famous for miracles.
At Constantinople, the holy Virgins Eustolia of Rome, and Sopatra, daughter of the Emperor Maurice.
At Beirut, in Lebanon, is made commemoration of an image of the Saviour which was crucified by the Jews, (about the year 765,) and so much Blood flowed therefrom, that the Churches both of the East and West have plentifully received thereof.
