Martino, nato a Sabaria nella Pannonia, compiuto il decimo anno, se ne fuggì alla chiesa, nonostante l'opposizione dei genitori, e si fece iscrivere tra i catecumeni, A quindici anni, arruolatosi nell'esercito, militò prima sotto Costanzo, e poi sotto Giuliano. Domandandogli l'elemosina un povero pezzente, in Amiens, in nome di Cristo, e non trovandosi che le armi e le vesti ond'era coperto, gli fece parte del suo mantello. La notte seguente, gli apparve Cristo coperto con quella metà di mantello, dicendo queste parole: Martino catecumeno, m'ha rivestito con questa veste.

Lettura 5
All'età di diciotto anni fu n battezzato. Abbandonata allora la vita militare, si recò presso Ilario, vescovo di Poitiers, che l'accolse nel numero degli accoliti. Fatto in seguito vescovo di Tours, fondò un monastero, dove visse santissimamente per qualche tempo con ottanta monaci. Assalito poi da gran febbre a Candes, borgo della sua diocesi, pregava istantemente Dio, che lo liberasse da questo carcere di morte. I discepoli udendolo, gli dicevano Padre, perché ci abbandoni? a chi lasci i tuoi poveri figli? E Martino commosso alle loro voci, pregava Dio così: Signore, s'io sono ancora necessario al tuo popolo, non ricuso la fatica.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il beato Martino conobbe molto tempo innanzi la sua morte, e disse ai suoi fratelli,

I discepoli vedendolo, nonostante la violenza della febbre, pregare sempre supino, lo supplicarono di cambiar alquanto posizione, e di tenere chinata la testa, finché non fosse diminuita la violenza del male. Ma Martino disse loro; Lasciatemi guardare piuttosto il cielo, che la terra, affinché la mia anima sul punto di andare al Signore, prenda già la sua rotta. Appressandosi già la morte, visto il nemico del genere umano, gli disse; Che fai qui, bestia crudele? tu in me non troverai nulla per te. In queste parole, rese l'anima a Dio in età di 81 anno, ricevuta dal coro degli Angeli, e molti, fra i quali in primo luogo san Severino vescovo di Colonia, li udirono cantare le divine lodi.

Libro 7 Commento al c. 11 di Luca dopo il principio
Avendo prima messo la Chiesa al disopra della Sinagoga, ora ci esorta a trasportare di preferenza la nostra fede alla Chiesa. Perché il lume (di cui parla il Vangelo) è la fede, secondo che sta scritto: «La tua parola è lucerna ai miei passi, o Signore» Ps. 118,105. La Parola dì Dio è l'oggetto della nostra fede; la Parola di Dio è luce: dunque la fede è una Lucerna: «Egli era la Luce vera, che illumina ogni uomo che viene in questo mondo» Joann. 1,9. Ma la lucerna non può illuminare, se essa non riceve la luce d'altronde.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. O beato uomo, al cui transito canta una legione di Santi, il coro degli Angeli esulta,

La virtù del nostro spirito e dei nostri pensieri è questa lucerna che si accende affin di ritrovare questa dramma perduta. Nessuno pertanto ponga la fede sotto la legge; perché la legge è contenuta in una stretta misura, la grazia è fuori misura; la legge fa ombra, la grazia rischiara. Perciò nessuno rinchiuda la sua fede nella misura stretta della legge, ma la porti alla Chiesa, ch'è rischiarata dalla grazia settiforme dello Spirito, e che il Principe dei sacerdoti illumina collo splendore della sua divinità, affinché l'ombra della legge non privi la sua lucerna di luce. Così quella lucerna, che al mattino e alla sera, secondo l'antico rito dei Giudei, il gran sacerdote era solito di accendere, ha cessato di far luce, siccome posta sotto il moggio della legge; e la Gerusalemme terrestre, questa città «che uccise i profeti» Matth. 23,37 è come interrata nella valle di pianto. Invece la Gerusalemme celeste, in cui la nostra fede combatte, posta su quell'altissimo monte, ch'è Cristo, non può essere nascosta dalle tenebre e dalle rovine di questo mondo; ma risplendente del fulgore del sole eterno, c'illumina colla luce spirituale della grazia.

Commemorazione: S. Menna Martire
Menna, Egiziano, soldato cristiano, ritiratosi nella solitudine, durante la persecuzione degl'imperatori Diocleziano e Massimiano, per fare penitenza, il giorno della nascita degl'imperatori, che il popolo celebrava con grandi spettacoli, irruppe nel teatro gridando arditamente contro le superstizioni pagane. Perciò preso, legato e condotto a Cati, metropoli della Frigia, governata dal prefetto Pirro, venne crudelmente flagellato con correggie di cuoio. Poi, torturato sul cavalletto, bruciato ai fianchi con torce accese e fregatene le piaghe con un cilicio, quindi trascinato, legato mani e piedi su graticci seminati di punte di ferro, pesto inoltre con verghe guarnite di piombo, finalmente venne ucciso di spada e gettato nel fuoco. Il suo corpo, ritirato dai Cristiani, fu sepolto e in seguito trasportato a Costantinopoli.

Martin was born at Sabaria in Pannonia. When he was ten years old he went to the Church, in the spite of his (heathen) father and mother, and by his own will was numbered among the Catechumens. At fifteen years of age he joined the army, and served as a soldier first under Constantius and then under Julian. Once at the gate of Amiens a poor man asked him for an alms for Christ's name's sake, and since he had nothing to his hand but his arms and his clothes, he gave him half of his cloak. In the night following Christ appeared to him clad in the half of his cloak, and saying (to the angels who bare Him company) While Martin is yet a Catechumen, he hath clad Me in this garment.

At the last he fell sick of a grievous fever at Cande, a village in his diocese, and besought God in constant prayer to set him free from the prison of this dying body. Commemoration of: S. Menna, Martyr
Mennas was a Christian Egyptian soldier who had withdrawn himself into a desert place to do penance, but one day, during the persecution under the Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, upon the said Emperors' birthday, when the people were gathered together at a great show, stood forth in the theatre, and reviled with a loud voice the idolatries of the Gentiles. Thereupon he was arrested, and being bound at Cotyasus, the chief city of Phrygia, under the authority of the President Pyrrhus, was first savagely lashed with thongs, then racked, then scarified with fire applied to his naked body, then had his wounds lacerated by rubbing with hair-cloth, then dragged through thorns and iron spikes with hands and feet tied, then lashed again with whips loaded with lead, and lastly slain with the sword, and thrown into a fire. The Christians saved his body thence and buried it, and it hath in after times been carried to Constantinople.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 12th 2026, the 2nd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The holy martyr, Pope Martin. He got together a synod at Rome, wherein he condemned the heretics Sergius, Paul, and Pyrrhus. Wherefore the heretic Emperor Constans caused him to be kidnapped and brought to Constantinople, whence he was banished into the Crimea, where he died, (in the year 655,) worn out by his sufferings for the Catholic faith's sake. He was famous for miracles. His body was afterward brought to Rome and buried in the Church of SS. Sylvester and Martin.
In Asia, the holy martyrs and Bishops Aurelius and Publius.
In the country of Sens, (in the year 726,) the holy martyr Paternus.
At Gent, the holy martyr Livin, Bishop (in Ireland, Apostle of West Flanders, martyred at Esse, in Belgium, in the seventh century.)
In Poland, the holy martyred Hermits Benedict, John, Matthew, Isaac, and Christinus.
At Vitepsk, in Poland, the holy martyr Jehosaphat, Archbishop of Polotsk, Monk of the Order of St. Basil, who was cruelly murdered by schismatics, (in the year 1623,) out of their hatred for Catholic unity and truth, and whose name Pope Pius IX enrolled among those of the holy martyrs. We keep his feast upon the 28th day of this present month of November.

Likewise at Constantinople, holy Theodore, of the monastery which is called the Studium who contended mightily for the Catholic faith against the Iconoclasts, and became famous throughout the whole Catholic Church, (a.d. 759-826.)
At Alcala, in Spain, (in the year 1463,) the holy Confessor Diego, of the Order of Friars Minor, eminent for his lowliness, whose name Sixtus V enrolled among those of the Saints, and whose feast is kept upon the morrow after.
