2 Ed essendo egli già zeppo di vino, ordinò che fosser portati i vasi d'oro e d'argento che il padre suo Nabucodonosor aveva, portati via dal tempio che fu in Gerusalemme, per bere in essi il re e i suoi cortigiani e le sue mogli e concubine.
3 E furono portati i vasi d'oro e d'argento asportati dal tempio ch'era stato in Gerusalemme, e bevvero in essi il re e i suoi cortigiani e le sue mogli e concubine.
4 Bevevano il vino e lodavano gli dèi loro d'oro, d'argento, di bronzo, di ferro, di legno e di pietra.
5 Nello stesso punto apparvero delle dita come di mano d'uomo che scriveva dirimpetto al candelabro, sulla superficie della parete della sala reale, e il re osservava le dita della mano che scriveva.

Martino, nato a Todi nell'Umbria, fin dal principio del suo pontificato si sforzò, con inviare lettere e legati, di ricondurre dai funesti errori dell'eresia alla verità della fede cattolica Paolo patriarca di Costantinopoli. Il quale, sostenuto dall'eretico Imperatore Costante, era giunto a tale eccesso di follia, da relegare in diverse isole i legati della Sede apostolica. Il Papa indignato di siffatto delitto, lo condannò in un concilio di centocinquanta vescovi radunato a Roma.

Ciò fu causa che Costante inviasse in Italia l'esarca Olimpio, con ordine di far uccidere Papa Martino o di condurlo a lui. Ma il soldato nel tentare il colpo, rimase cieco all'istante.

Da questo momento molte sventure piombarono sull'imperatore Costante; ma lungi dal ravvedersi, inviò a Roma Teodoro Calliopa, coll'ordine d'impadronirsi del Papa. Martino, preso con inganno da colui e condotto a Costantinopoli, fu di poi relegato nel Chersoneso; dove affranto dai mali sofferti per la fede cattolica, cessò di vivere il 15 Novembre, illustre per miracoli. Il suo corpo trasportato poi a Roma, fu riposto nella chiesa ch'era stata dedicata a Dio sotto i nomi dei Santi Silvestro e Martino. Egli governò la Chiesa tre anni, un mese e ventitre giorni. Tenne due ordinazioni nel mese di Dicembre, in cui creò undici preti, cinque diaconi, trentatre vescovi per luoghi diversi.

Allora il Signore gli disse: «Beato te, o Simone, figlio di Giona, perché questo non ti è stato rivelato dalla carne o dal sangue, ma dal Padre mio che sta nei cieli. Perciò io ti dico che tu sei Pietro e su questa pietra edificherò la mia Chiesa e le porte dell'inferno non prevarranno mai contro di essa. Nella Chiesa intera, infatti, ogni giorno Pietro dice: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente»; ed ogni lingua che riconosce il Signore viene istruita col magistero di tale voce. Tale fede sconfigge il diavolo e scioglie i legami di coloro che egli tiene prigionieri. Essa fa entrare nel cielo coloro che ha strappato alla terra e le porte dell'inferno non possono prevalere contro di essa. È stata infatti per potenza divina munita di una tale saldezza che mai la potrà corrompere la malvagità degli eretici né la potrà superare la perfidia dei pagani. Con tali disposizioni dunque, dilettissimi, e con razionale ossequio si celebri la festività odierna: affinché nell'umiltà della mia persona venga riconosciuto e onoralo colui, nel quale continua la cura che tutti i pastori hanno nella custodia delle pecore loro affidate e la cui dignità non viene meno per l'indegnità dell'erede.

Martin was born at Todi in Tuscany. At the beginning of his Popedom, in the year 649, he was careful to send an embassage with letters to Paul, Patriarch of Constantinople, to call upon him to return to the truth of the Catholic faith from the blasphemous heresy (of the Monothelites.) But Paul, being backed up by the heretic Emperor Constans, had become so rabid, that he sent away the messengers of the Apostolic See into diverse places in the islands. This crime moved the Pope to gather together at Rome a council of one - hundred - and five Bishops, by whom Paul was condemned.

From that time forth many evils befell the Emperor Constans; but he repented not. He sent the Exarch Theodore Calliopas to Rome, with command to lay hands on the Pope. By him Martin was treacherously taken on the 17th day of June, 653, and (forthwith carried to the island of Naxos. On the 17th of September in 654 he was) brought to Constantinople, (where he was kept in prison) till he was sent to the Crimea on the 15th of May, 655. There his sufferings for the Catholic faith utterly broke him down, and he left this life for a better, upon the 12th day of November, in the same year 655. He was famous for miracles. His body was afterwards brought back to Rome and buried in the Church dedicated under the names of St. Silvester and St. Martin of Tours. He ruled the Church for six years, one month, and twenty-six days. He held two ordinations in the month of December, wherein he made eleven Priests, five Deacons, and thirtythree Bishops for diverse places.

Questa, sotto l'Imperatore Galério Massimiano, dopo essere stata battuta colle verghe, fu arsa col fuoco; quelli poi, avendo intrepidi e francamente rimproverato di empietà il Preside Firmiliàno perchè sacrificava agli idoli, furono decapitati.
Nell'Africa i santi Martiri Spagnoli Arcàdio, Pascàsio, Probo ed Eutichiàno, i quali, nella persecuzione dei Vandali, non volendo in alcun modo consentire alla perfidia Ariana, da Genserico, Re Ariano, prima furono spogliati dei loro beni, quindi mandati in esilio e straziati con crudelissimi supplizi, da ultimo con vario genere di morte furono uccisi. Martyrology {anticipated}
Upon the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Diego, of the Order of Friars Minor, who was born into the better life upon this present day.
November 13th 2026, the 3rd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Ravenna, the holy martyrs Valentine, Solutor, and Victor, who suffered in the persecution under Diocletian.
At Aix, in Provence, (in the year 304,) that illustrious martyr the blessed Mitrius.
At Caesarea, in Palestine, (in the year 308,) in the persecution under the Emperor Galerius Maximian, the holy martyrs Antonine, Zebinas, German, and the Virgin Ennatha. Ennatha was flogged and then burnt, and the men were beheaded because they openly rebuked the President Firmilian for his wickedness in offering sacrifice to the gods.
In Africa, (in the year 437,) the holy martyrs Arcadius, Paschasius, Probus, and Eutychian. These were all Spaniards who, during the persecution under the Vandals, could no wise be brought to turn aside unto the Arian misbelief. For this cause the Arian king Genseric first proscribed them, then banished them, afterwards tormented them with terrible sufferings, and lastly put them to death in diverse ways. Then also became glorious the faithfulness of the little lad, Paulillus, the brother of holy Paschasius and Eutychian, and as he would not give up the Catholic faith, he was cudgelled for a long time and condemned to the lowest bondage.
At Rome, holy Pope Nicholas the Great, eminent for his Apostolic vigour. (He reigned from April 28, 858 to November 13, 867. He was the 107th Pope.)
