11 Ma quegli uomini che spiavano curiosamente, trovarono Daniele che pregava e supplicava il suo Dio,
12 E andati dal re gli ricordarono l'editto dicendo: Sire, non hai tu ordinato che qualunque persona che per trenta giorni facesse preghiera a qualcuno degli dèi o degli uomini, fuorché a te, o sire, fosse gettato nella fossa dei leoni? Ai quali il re rispondendo disse: Cosi è veramente, secondo l'editto dei Medi e dei Persiani, cui non è lecito contravvenire.
13 Allora quelli risposero e dissero al re: Daniele dei figli esuli di Giuda non ha fatto conto della tua legge, né dell'editto che tu hai fatto, ma tre volte al giorno fa la preghiera.
14 Ciò udito, il re ne rimase molto afflitto; e si prepose in cuor suo di liberare Daniele e fino al tramonto del sole si adoperò per salvarlo.
15 Ma quegli uomini, avendo compreso l'animo del re, gli dissero: Sire, sappi che è legge dei Persiani e dei Medi che qualunque decreto fatto dal re non è più lecito cambiarlo.

Diego, Spagnolo, di borgo san Nicola del Porto, diocesi di Siviglia, fin dalla prima età si esercitò, sotto la direzione d'un pio sacerdote, in una chiesa solitaria, alle prime pratiche d'una vita più santa dell'ordinaria. Poi, affin d'unirsi più strettamente a Dio, professò la regola di san Francesco tra i fratelli laici nel convento dei frati Minori (detti Osservanti) di Arizzafa. Là sottomessosi con grande alacrità al giogo dell'umile obbedienza e della regolare osservanza, e datosi particolarmente alla contemplazione, Dio lo riempiva di luce mirabile cosicché, sebbene illetterato, parlava di cose di cielo in maniera meravigliosa e affatto divina.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Nelle isole Canarie, dove fu superiore ai frati del suo ordine, e dove il suo ardente desiderio del martirio lo fece molto soffrire, co' suoi discorsi ed esempi convertì alla fede di Cristo molti infedeli. Portatosi a Roma nell'anno del giubileo, sotto il pontificato di Nicolò V, e destinato alla cura dei malati nel convento di Araceli, disimpegnò quest'ufficio con si ardente carità, che, nonostante la carestia che desolava la Città, i suoi malati, di cui talvolta guariva le piaghe baciandole, non mancarono mai del necessario. In lui risplendé pure una fede vivissima e il dono delle guarigioni, perché facendo sui malati delle unzioni in forma di croce coll'olio d'una lampada che bruciava davanti all'immagine della beatissima Madre di Dio, che onorava colla più gran devozione, ne guarì prodigiosamente molti dalle loro malattie.

Infine, sentendo, mentr'era ad Alcalà, prossima la fine della sua vita, non avendo addosso che una tonaca vecchia e tutta logora, cogli occhi fissi sulla croce, dopo pronunziate con singolare delizia queste parole dell'inno sacro «Dolce legno, dolci chiodi, sostegno di si dolce peso, che fosti degno di sostenere il Re dei cieli, il Signore», rese l'anima a Dio il 12 Novembre, nell'anno del Signore 1463. Il suo corpo rimasto insepolto per parecchi mesi (affili di soddisfare al pio desiderio di quelli che accorrevano a vederlo), come se fosse già stato rivestito dell'incorruttibilità, mandava soavissimo odore. Celebre per molti e illustri miracoli, il sommo Pontefice Sisto V l'iscrisse nel novero dei Santi.

Libro 4, cap. 54, su Luca 12.
Chiama piccolo il gregge degli eletti, o per comparazione del maggior numero dei dannati, o meglio per la devozione dell'umiltà: poiché, sebbene la sua Chiesa sia già estesa con quanta mai numerosità, tuttavia vuole che cresca fino alla fine del mondo in umiltà, e che raggiunga con l'umiltà il regno promesso. Pertanto, dopo aver consolato delicatamente le sue fatiche, colei a cui ha ordinato di cercare soltanto il regno di Dio, alla medesima promette con compiaciuta bontà il regno che verrà donato dal Padre.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

«Vendete le cose che possedete e datele in elemosina». Non temete, disse, che vengano a mancare ai combattenti per il regno di Dio le cose necessarie di questo mondo: che anzi vendete anche le cose possedute per l'elemosina. Ciò allora si fa degnamente, quando uno, una volta disprezzate tutte le sue cose per il Signore, nondimeno dopo di queste con il lavoro delle mani opera sia per avere il vitto sia perché possa dare elemosina. Donde si gloria l'Apostolo, dicendo: «Non ho io desiderato l'argento, e l'oro, le vesti di nessuno: conforme voi sapete che al bisogno mio e di quelli che sono con me servirono queste mani. In tutto vi ho dimostrato come così lavorando, conviene sostenere i deboli».

Reading 4
Diego was a Spaniard, and was born at the little town of San Nicola-del-Porto, in the diocese of Seville. From his childhood he learnt the more holy life under a godly Priest, (who lived hermit) in a lonely Church, and so served his apprenticeship. Afterwards, being fain to be more utterly God's only, he professed himself as a lay brother under the Rule of St. Francis in the convent of the Friars Minor, called Observant, of Arrizafa. There he cheerfully bore the yoke of the lowliest obedience and the strictest observance. He was much given to contemplation, and a wonderful light from God shone in him, so that, though he was untaught, he could speak touching heavenly things strangely and as it were supernaturally.

In the Canary Islands, where he was warden of the brethren of his Order, he underwent much, earnestly willing to be a martyr, and by his word and example brought many unbelievers to Christ. He came to Rome in the year of the Jubilee, ~being that of our Lord 1450, in the reign of Pope Nicolas V., and there was set to tend the. sick in the Convent of Ara Coeli, which work he did with such love, that although the city was plagued with a famine, the sufferers (whose sores he would sometimes cleanse even with his tongue) scarcely lacked anything needful. He was a burning and shining light of faith, and had the gift of healing, taking the oil from the lamp which burned before the image of the most blessed Mother of God, to whom he was earnestly devoted, and anointing the sick therewith, whereupon many were marvellously cured.

He was at Alcala when he understood that the end of his life was at hand. The elect are called a little flock, perchance because the reprobate are far more in number than they, but, more probably, because they love to be lowly, since it is God's will that however much His Church should grow in numbers, she should grow with lowliness even unto the end of the world, and should enter lowly into that kingdom which is hers by His promise. That kingdom He promiseth to her here, when He biddeth her to seek only the kingdom of God, and, to comfort her in her travail, He doth so sweetly and so graciously say that her Father will give it to her.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.

On the morrow we keep in England the feast of holy Erconwald, Bishop of London, who was famous for many miracles, and of whom mention is made upon the last day of April.

At Alexandria, the holy martyr Serapion, whom the persecutors under the Emperor Decius most cruelly tormented until they dislocated all his joints, and then cast him down headlong from the top of his own house, and so made him a martyr for Christ.
At Troyes, in Gaul, under the Emperor Aurelian, the holy martyr Venerandus.
Likewise in Gaul, the holy Virgin Veneranda, who received the crown of martyrdom under the Emperor Antonine and Asclepiades the President.
At Gangra, in Paphlagonia, the holy martyr Hypatius, Bishop (of that see,) who was stoned to death by the Novatian heretics on his way back from the great Council of Nicea.
At Algiers, in Africa, (in the year 1240,) the blessed Serapion, the first martyr of the Order of Blessed Mary of Ransom for the Redemption of the Captive Faithful and the Preaching of the Christian Faith. He won his crown by being fastened to a cross and cut limb from limb.
At Emesa, many holy Women, who, for Christ's faith's sake, were most cruelly tortured and murdered under the savage Arab chief Mady.
At Bologna, the holy Confessor Jucundus, Bishop (of that see.) In Ireland, (in the year 1181,) holy Lorcan Ua Tuathail, Archbishop of Dublin.
