Giosafatte Kuncewicz, nato da nobili e cattolici parenti a Vladimir in Volinia, mentre, fanciullo, ascoltava la madre parlare della passione di Cristo, un dardo si partì dal costato dell'immagine di Gesù crocifisso e andò a ferirgli il cuore. Infiammato dell'amore di Dio, cominciò ad abbandonarsi con tal fervore all'orazione e agli altri esercizi di pietà, da essere d'esempio e di ammirazione ai giovani più grandi di lui. Professata a vent'anni la regola monastica fra i religiosi dell'ordine di san Basilio, furono meravigliosi i suoi progressi nella perfezione evangelica. Andava a piedi nudi, nonostante l'eccessivo rigore dell'inverno in quelle contrade; non mangiava mai carne, e non prendeva vino che per ubbidienza, e fino alla morte mortificò il corpo con un asprissimo cilizio. Il giglio della castità, che fin da giovanetto aveva consacrato alla Vergine Madre di Dio, lo conservò inviolato. La fama della sua virtù e della sua dottrina crebbe in breve talmente, che, sebbene giovane, fu preposto al monastero di Bitene; poco dopo fu nominato archimandrita di Vilna, e infine, sebbene riluttante, ma con gioia dei Cattolici, arcivescovo di Polotsk.

Innalzato a questa dignità, senza cambiare nulla del tenore di vita precedente, non ebbe a cuore che il culto divino e la salvezza delle pecorelle affidategli. Energico difensore della unità e verità cattolica, si adoprò a tutt'uomo per ricondurre alla comunione culla Sede di san Pietro scismatici ed eretici. Non cessò mai, ora con discorsi, ora con scritti pieni di pietà e dottrina, di difendere il Sommo Pontefice e la pienezza della sua autorità dalle calunnie impudentissime e dagli errori degli empi. Rivendicò la giurisdizione episcopale e i beni della Chiesa usurpati da laici. Non si può credere quanti eretici ricondusse nel seno materno della Chiesa. Circa l'unione della Chiesa Greca colla Latina, le dichiarazioni dei sommi Pontefici attestano espressamente Giosafatte esserne stato il più illustre promotore. A questo fine, come anche per rendere al tempio di Dio il suo decoro, per costruire case per sacre vergini e sostenere altre opere pie, erogò spontaneamente le rendite della sua mensa. La sua liberalità verso i poveri fu tale, che non trovandosi più nulla una volta, per sollevare la miseria d'una povera vedova, fece impegnare il suo omoforion, cioè il pallio episcopale.

Lettura 6
Tanti progressi della fede cattolica eccitarono talmente l'odio di certi uomini corrotti, che fecero un complotto per uccidere l'atleta di Cristo; e in un suo discorso al popolo, egli stesso annunziò la morte che gli era minacciata. Recatosi a Vitebsk per la visita episcopale, i cospiratori invasero il, palazzo episcopale ferendo e massacrando quanti incontravano. Allora l'uomo mitissimo si fece incontro spontaneamente a quelli che lo cercavano, e rivolgendo loro amichevolmente la sua voce: «Figli, disse, perché maltrattate i miei famigliari? Se avete qualche cosa contro di me, eccomi qui». E quelli, precipitatisi su di lui, lo caricano di bastonate, lo trapassano colle loro armi, e poi, uccisolo con un tremendo colpo di scure, lo gettano nel fiume, il 12 Novembre dell'anno 1623, dell'età sua quarantesimo terzo. Il suo corpo, segnalato da una luce meravigliosa, fu ritirato dal fondo del fiume. Gli omicidi del Martire furono i primi a sperimentare l'efficacia del suo sangue, perché, condannati quasi tutti ad essere decapitati, abiurarono lo scisma e si pentirono del loro misfatto. Glorificato il santo Vescovo dopo morte da moltissimi miracoli, il sommo Pontefice Urbano VIII gli decretò gli onori dei Beati. Pio IX, il 29 Giugno dell'anno 1867, in occasione delle solenni feste celebrate per il centenario dei Principi degli Apostoli, davanti all'assemblea dei cardinali, in presenza di circa cinquecento tra patriarchi, metropolitani e vescovi d'ogni rito convenuti da tutte le parti del mondo, l'iscrisse solennemente nella basilica Vaticana nell'albo dei Santi, siccome il primo difensore, fra gli orientali, dell'unità ecclesiastica. Il sommo Pontefice Leone XIII ne estese a tutta la Chiesa l'Ufficio e la Messa.

È una gran cosa, dilettissimi, è una gran cosa, dico, la dignità di prelato nella Chiesa, e che esige molta sapienza e coraggio come l'ha proposto Cristo: che cioè sacrifichiamo la vita per le pecore, e non le abbandoniamo mai e che resistiamo generosamente al lupo. Poiché questa è la differenza fra il pastore e il mercenario: l'uno, non curandosi delle pecore pensa solo alla propria salute; l'altro, non curante della propria salute, veglia sempre al benessere delle pecore. Mostrata dunque la caratteristica del pastore, accenna a due ingannatori: al ladro che ammazza e rapisce le pecore; e al mercenario che permette ciò senza difendere le pecore affidategli.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Ciò che altra volta strappava a Ezechiele queste invettive «Guai ai pastori d'Israele: non pascono essi forse se stessi? non è forse dei pastori pascere i greggi?» Ezech. 34,2. Ma essi facevano il contrario, condotta delle più criminali e causa d'infiniti mali. Perciò dice «Non sollevavano le cadute: né cercavano le traviate: né fasciavano le membra rotte; né curavano le malate, solleciti com'erano non di pascere il gregge, ma solo dì sé» Ezech. 34,4. Lo stesso esprime Paolo in altri termini «Tutti cercano il proprio interesse, non quello di Gesù Cristo» Philipp. 2,21.

Ma Cristo si dimostra ben diverso da tutti due: da quelli cioè che vengono per la rovina altrui, dichiarando «d'esser egli venuto perché abbiano la vita e la abbiano abbondantemente» Joann. 10,10, e da quelli che permettevano colla loro negligenza ai lupi di rapir le pecore, dichiarando ch'egli «dava la sua vita, perché le sue pecore non perissero» Joann. 10,15. Difatti benché i Giudei cercassero di ucciderlo, non per questo cessò d'insegnare né abbandonò i suoi discepoli, ma rimase al suo posto, e soffri la morte: perciò ripete spesso «Io sono il buon pastore» Joann. 10,11. Ma queste cose non vedendosi provate (che desse infatti la sua vita, si avverò solo qualche tempo dopo; e che avessero la vita, e l'avessero sovrabbondantemente, non doveva realizzarsi che nel secolo futuro) egli conferma l'una cosa coll'altra.

Reading 4
Josaphat Kuncewitz was born of noble Catholic parents at Vladimir in Volhynia. Once as a child, as he listed to his mother tell the story of the Passion, a dart came forth from the side of Christ on the crucifix and wounded the boy in the heart. Set on fire with love of God, he devoted himself to prayer and works of charity with such zeal that he became the admiration and the model for youths far older than he. When Josaphat was twenty years old he was professed among the cloistered followers of the monastic rule of Saint Basil. Almost at once he made remarkable progress in evangelical perfection. He went barefoot, even in the severe winters of that country. He never ate meat, and drank wine only when obliged to do so under obedience. He disciplined his body by wearing rough hair-shirts until the day of his death. He kept unspotted the flower of chastity which in his youth he had dedicated to the Virgin Mother of God. He became so celebrated for virtue and learning that despite his youth he was made superior of the monastery at Byten, and the Archimandrite of Vilnius. Finally much against his will, but to the very great joy of the Catholic people, he was made Archbishop of Polotsk.

In the years following the promotion to this dignity, Josaphat did not relax in any way his austere mode of living. Nothing was so close to his heart as service to God and the salvation of the flock entrusted to his care. He was a vigorous champion of Catholic unity and truth. He laboured to the utmost of his ability to win back schismatics and heretics to unity with the See of blessed Peter. Both by preaching and writing he defended the Supreme Pontiff and the doctrine of the Pope's plenitude of power. He directed these works, full of piety and learning against most shameful calumnies and the errors of wicked men. Josaphat vindicated episcopal rights and restored ecclesiastical property seized by laymen. He won back an incredible number of heretics to the bosom of holy Mother Church. How successfully he laboured to re-establish communion between the Greek and Latin Churches is told in Papal commendations. He gladly spent the revenues set aside for his maintenance to rebuild God's house, to erect convents for consecrated virgins, and to carry on other charitable works. So generous was Josaphat towards the poor that in one instance when he did not have money enough to supply the needs of a certain widow, he pawned his omophorion, that is, his episcopal pallium.

The great progress made by the Catholic faith so stirred up the anger of certain of its wicked enemies that they conspired to murder this athlete of Christ. In a sermon he foretold to his people what was about to happen. As he was setting out for Vitebsk on a pastoral visit, these enemies broke into the episcopal palace, attacking and wounding every one they found. Undaunted, this most kindly man hurried out to the assassins of his own free will and addressed them mildly. My little children, he said, why do ye strike my servants? If ye have any complaint against me, I am here. Thereupon they rushed at him, overwhelmed him with blows and pierced him through with spears. Finally they slew him a stroke of a great axe and threw his body into the river. This happened on November 12th, 1632, when he was forty-three years old. Later his body, surrounded by a marvellous light, was raised from the deepest part of the river. The blood of this Martyr benefited first of all those murderers of their spiritual father. Sentenced to die for their crime, almost all abjured their schism and repented of their crime. Because this wonderful high priest became famous after his death for many miracles, the Supreme Pontiff, Urban VIII, honoured him with the title Blessed. On the 29th of June, 1867, during the solemn observance of the centenaries of the Princes of the Apostles, in the presence of the college of cardinals, of about five hundred others, patriarchs, metropolitans, and bishops of every rite from all parts of the world, assembled in the Vatican basilica, with all solemn ceremonies, Pius IX canonized the first eastern Christian to uphold the unity of the Church. The Supreme Pontiff, Leo XIII, extended his Mass and Office to the universal Church.

The one leaveth the sheep and seeketh his own safety, but the other recketh not of his own safety, so as he may watch over the sheep. A Colònia sant'Albérto Vescovo e Confessore, dell'Ordine dei Predicatori, detto Magno, celebre per la santità e dottrina, che il Papa Pio undecimo dichiarò Dottore della Chiesa universale e Pio dodicesimo lo costituì celeste Patrono dei cultori di scienze naturali.
Nello stesso giorno il natale di sant'Eugénio, Vescovo di Tolédo e Martire, che fu discepolo del beato Dionigi l'Areopagita, e nel territorio di Parigi, compiuto il corso del martirio, ricevette dal Signore la corona della sua beata passione. Il suo corpo fu in seguito trasportato a Tolédo, in Spagna.
A Nola, in Campània, il beato Felice, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, fin dal quindicesimo anno di età, rifulse per miracoli, e, sotto il Preside Marciàno, con altri trenta Compagni, compì il combattimento del martirio.

November 15th 2026, the 5th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The holy martyr Eugene, Archbishop of Toledo, a disciple of blessed Denys, the Areopagite. He finished his testimony in the country of Paris, and received from the Lord a blessed crown of suffering, (in the year 95.) His body was afterwards brought to Toledo.

103:14 per trarre dalla terra il pane, * ed il vino, che rallegra il cuore dell'uomo:
103:15 e perché questi possa con l'olio far risplendere la sua faccia, * e il pane corrobori il cuore dell'uomo.
103:16 Avran nutrimento a sazietà gli alberi della campagna, e i cedri del Libano, che egli ha piantato. * Ivi gli uccelli faranno il loro nido.

103:26 animali piccoli e grandi. * Ivi scorreranno le navi,
103:27 e quel dragone che tu formasti, perché vi scherzi. * Tutti essi attendono da te, che tu dia loro il cibo a suo tempo.
103:28 Tu lo dai loro, ed essi lo raccolgono: * tu allarghi la mano, e tutti sono ricolmi di bene.
