Il profeta Osea ha un linguaggio quanto profondo altrettanto difficile a penetrarsi. Ma bisogna pur allegarne qualche cosa qui per mantenere la mia promessa. «E avverrà, dice, che in quello stesso luogo dove fu detto loro, Non più mio popolo, saranno chiamati figli di Dio vivo» Os. 1,10. Queste parole sono una profezia della vocazione del popolo Gentile, che prima non apparteneva a Dio, e gli Apostoli.

E siccome il popolo dei Gentili è anch'esso spiritualmente del numero dei figli di Abramo, e perciò detto con ragione popolo d'Israele, per questo il profeta aggiunge: «E i figli di Giuda e i figli d'Israele si raduneranno insieme e si eleggeranno un sol capo e si rialzeranno da terra» Os. 1,11. Volerlo spiegare di più sarebbe togliere la forza a questo linguaggio profetico. Si ricordi solamente quella pietra angolare e quelle due muraglie, l'una composta di Giudei, l'altra di Gentili quella sotto il nome di figli di Giuda, questa sotto il nome di figli d'Israele, appoggiantesi tutte due ad un solo e medesimo loro capo e tutte due rialzantisi da terra.

Chi non vede che proprio così sono ora i Giudei?

Libro 2 Commento al capo 13 di Matteo
Il regno dei cieli è la predicazione del Vangelo, e la conoscenza delle Scritture, che conduce alla vita, e di cui si dice ai Giudei: «Vi sarà tolto il regno di Dio, e sarà dato a un popolo che ne produca frutti» Matth. 21, 43. «Questo regno dunque è simile a un chicco di senapa, che un uomo ha preso e seminato nel suo campo» Matth. 13, 31. Per l'uomo che semina nel suo campo, molti intendono il Salvatore, perché egli semina negli animi dei credenti: secondo altri è l'uomo stesso che semina nel suo campo, cioè in se stesso e nel suo cuore.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Beato il popolo,
* Che il Signore degli eserciti benedisse, dicendo: Tu sei opera delle mie mani, la mia eredità, o Israele.

Chi è allora questi che semina, se non la nostra intelligenza; che, ricevendo il chicco della predicazione e conservando con cura questa semenza, la fa crescere nel campo del nostro cuore dove essa è fecondata dall'amore della fede? La predicazione del Vangelo è la più umile di tutte lo scienze. Difatti a prima vista essa non ispira la fiducia della verità, annunziando un uomo-Dio, un Cristo morto, e lo scandalo della croce. Confronta simile dottrina coi postulati dei filosofi e coi loro libri, collo splendore dell'eloquenza e colla composizione dei loro discorsi: e vedrai quanto fra le altre sementi la semenza del Vangelo sia più minuta.

Ma quelle, cresciute, non mostrano nulla di resistente, nulla di vigoroso, nulla dl vivace: ciò che esse producono è tutto floscio, languido e senza consistenza, son delle piante insignificanti, dell'erbe che tosto seccano e cadono. La predicazione del Vangelo invece, che da principio pareva piccola, appena è seminata, o nell'anima del credente, o in tutto il mondo, non spunta in erba, ma cresce in albero: così che gli uccelli del cielo (per cui dobbiamo intendere o le anime dei credenti, o le forze consacrate al servizio di Dio) vanno a riposarsi tra i suoi rami. I rami dell'albero evangelico, cresciuto dal chicco di senapa, credo che siano i diversi dogmi, sui quali riposa ciascuno dei sopradetti uccelli.

The kingdom of heaven is the proclamation of the Gospel, and that knowledge of the Scriptures, which leadeth unto life, and whereof it is said to the Jews: The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Matth. xxi. 43 Therefore is this kingdom like to a grain of mustard-seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. By the man that sowed it in his field, many understand to be meant the Saviour, because He is the Sower That soweth in the souls of believers; others understand every man that soweth good seed in his own field, that is, in himself and in his own heart.

Compare such teaching as this with the doctrines of the Philosophers, with their books, their magnificent eloquence, and their rounded sentences, and thou shalt see how the grain of the Gospel, when it is sown, is the humblest of all seeds.

But when the doctrines of men grow up, there is therein nothing piercing, nothing healthy, nothing life-giving. The plant is drooping, and delicate, and soft. But the grain of Gospel seed, though, when it was sown, it seemed to be the least of all seeds, when once it is rooted in the soul of man, or in the whole world, groweth not into an herb, but becometh a tree so that the birds of the air (whereby we may understand, either the souls of believers, or the (angelic) powers bound to the service of God,) come and lodge in the branches thereof. I consider that the branches of the Gospel tree, which groweth from the grain of mustard-seed, are the diverse developments of doctrine, on which the birds above mentioned find resting-places.

Santa Gertrude, Vergine, il cui natale si ricorda il giorno seguente.
Ad Edimburgo, nella Scòzia, il natale di santa Margherita Vedova, Regina di Scòzia, celebre per la carità verso i poveri e per la povertà volontaria. La sua festa però si celebra il dieci Giugno.
In Africa i santi Martiri Rufino, Marco, Valérlo e Compagni.
Nello stesso giorno i santi Martiri Elpidio, Marcéllo, Eustòchio e Compagni, dei quali Elpidio, essendo dell'ordine Senatorio e professando in presenza di Giuliano l'Apòstata la fede cristiana con somma costanza, prima insieme coi Compagni fu legato a cavalli indomiti e trascinato, quindi venne gettato nel fuoco, e in tal modo compì il glorioso martirio.
A Liòne, in Frància, il natale di sant'Euchério, Vescovo e Confessore, uomo di mirabile fede e dottrina. Egli dal nobilissimo ordine Senatorio passò alla vita e all'abito religioso, e per lungo tempo, stando volontariamente nascosto in una spelonca, servì a Cristo in orazioni e digiuni; quindi per angelica rivelazione fu solennemente sublimato alla cattedra episcopale di quella città.
A Pàdova san Fidénzio Vescovo.
A Canterbury, in Inghiltérra, sant'Edmondo, Vescovo e Confessore, il quale, mandato in esilio per aver difeso i diritti della sua Chiesa, morì santissimamente a Provins in Sens. Dal Papa Innocénzo quarto fu ascritto nel catalogo dei Santi.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 16th 2026, the 6th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Canterbury, in England, the holy Confessor Edmund Rich, Archbishop of that see, who was driven into exile (at Pontigny) for his defense of the rights of his Church, and died a holy death near Provins, (in Champagne, in the year 1242,) and whose name Innocent IV enrolled among those of the Saints.
In Africa, the holy martyrs Rufinus, Mark, Valerius, and their Companions.
On the same day, the holy martyrs Elpidius, Marcellus, Eustochius, and their Companions. Elpidius was of the Senatorial Order, and steadfastly confessed the Christian faith in the presence of the Emperor Julian the Apostate. He and his Companions were first tied to unbroken horses, and so dragged about, but afterwards cast into the fire, and so achieved a glorious martyrdom, (in the fourth century.)
At Lyon, the holy Confessor Eucherius, Bishop of that see, a man of wonderful faith and teaching. He was of the noblest of the Senatorial Order, and adopted the life and dress of a monk. For a long while he shut himself up in a cave, where he served Christ in fastings and prayers. He was called through the revelation of an angel to occupy the See of Lyons, and was therein solemnly placed. (He died about the year 450.)
At Padua, holy Fidentius, Bishop (of that see, in the year 168.)
On the same day, (in the year 759,) the holy Othmar, Abbot (of St. Gall, in Switzerland.)
