Geltrude, nata da nobili genitori a Eisleben nella Sassonia, all'età di cinque anni consacrò a Gesù Cristo la sua persona e la sua verginità nel monastero benedettino.di Rodesdorf. Da questo momento, aliena affatto dalle cose del mondo, si applicò con zelo alla pratica della virtù, e a menare una vita tutta celeste. Alla conoscenza delle lettere umane, congiungeva la scienza delle cose divine; dalla cui meditazione eccitata viemmaggiormente alla virtù, in breve raggiunse la perfezione cristiana. Parlava spesso e con pii sentimenti di Cristo e dei misteri della sua vita, e non pensando che alta gloria di Dio, ad essa riferiva tutti i suoi desideri ed azioni. Benché ricolma da Dio di molti eccellenti doni naturali e soprannaturali, tuttavia sentiva così basso di sé, che, fra i principali doni delta divina bontà, ella annoverava ancora questo, ch'egli sopportasse, nella sua misericordia, lei indegnissima peccatrice.

A trent'anni eletta superiora prima del monastero di Rodesdorf, dove aveva professato la vita religiosa, poi d'Heldelfs, ricoprì la carica per quarant'anni con tanta carità, prudenza e zelo per l'osservanza regolare, che il monastero sembrava l'asilo della perfezione religiosa. Ma in tutti due i luoghi, benché fosse la madre e superiora di tutte, voleva nondimeno essere considerata l'ultima, abbassandosi difatti talmente da farsi la serva di tutte. Affin d'occuparsi di Dio con maggior libertà di spirito, mortificava il suo corpo con veglie, digiuni e altre austerità; e, sempre uguale a se stessa, mostrò una innocenza di vita, una dolcezza e pazienza straordinarie. S'applicò con ogni mezzo a procurare la salvezza del prossimo, raccogliendo abbondanti frutti della sua pia sollecitudine. La forza dell'amore per Iddio le faceva provare frequenti estasi, e le ottenne il dono di un'altissima contemplazione e unione con Dio.

Lettura 6
Cristo, a mostrare il merito della sua dilettissima sposa, dichiarò che il cuore di Geltrude era per lui una dimora deliziosa. Onorava di speciale devozione la Vergine Madre di Dio, datale da Gesù stesso per madre e protettrice, e ricevé da lei molti benefizi. Il divinissimo sacramento dell'Eucaristia e la passione del Signore la penetravano d'un tale amore e di una sì viva riconoscenza, che alle volte si scioglieva in copiose lacrime. Sollevava ogni giorno con suffragi e preghiere le anime dei giusti condannate alle fiamme espiatrici. Scrisse molto per fomentare la pietà. Fu celebre anche per il dono delle rivelazioni divine e di profezia. Infine, inferma più d'ardentissimo amore verso Dio che di malattia, uscì di questa vita l'anno del Signore 1292. Dio la glorificò con miracoli durante la vita e dopo morte.

Omelia 12 sui Vangeli.
Spesso vi raccomando, fratelli carissimi, di fuggire le opere cattive e di evitare la corruzione di questo mondo, ma quest'oggi la lettura del santo Vangelo mi costringe a dirvi di stare molto attenti a non perdere il merito delle vostre buone opere, a non cercare, nel bene che fate, il favore o la stima degli uomini, ad impedire
che si insinui in voi il desiderio della lode e ad agire in modo che, quanto appare di fuori, non sia dentro vuoto di ricompensa. Il Redentore infatti ci parla di dieci vergini, e le dice tutte vergini; eppure non tutte hanno meritato di essere ammesse al soggiorno della beatitudine, perché alcune di esse, mentre cercavano una gloria esteriore della loro verginità, non si curarono di mettere dell'olio nelle loro lampade.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questa è una vergine saggia, che il Signore trovò vigilante: lei, con le lampade, prese con sé anche l'olio.

Ma prima dobbiamo chiederci che cosa sia il regno dei cieli, o perché lo si paragoni a dieci vergini, ed anche quali vengano dette vergini prudenti e quali vergini stolte. Mentre infatti è certo che nessun reprobo entrerà nel regno dei cieli, perché questo viene paragonato anche a delle vergini stolte? Dobbiamo sapere che spesso nel linguaggio sacro la Chiesa del tempo presente viene chiamata regno dei cieli. Onde altrove il Signore dice: «Il Figlio dell'uomo manderà i suoi angeli, e toglieranno dal suo regno tutti gli scandali». Certamente in quel regno di beatitudine, dove c'è la suprema pace, non si potranno trovare scandali da togliere.

Ciascuno vive in un corpo che ha cinque sensi; il numero cinque poi, raddoppiato, dà dieci. E, poiché la moltitudine dei fedeli comprende ambedue i sessi, la santa Chiesa si dice simile a dieci vergini. E poiché in essa i cattivi si trovano mescolati coi buoni e i reprobi con gli eletti, giustamente viene paragonata a delle vergini prudenti ed anche a delle vergini stolte. Infatti ci sono molti che vivono nella continenza, che si guardano dagli appetiti esteriori, e dalla speranza sono portati ai beni interiori, che mortificano la propria carne, e anelano alla patria celeste con tutta la forza del loro desiderio, agognano i premi eterni, e non vogliono ricevere lodi umane per le loro fatiche. Questi certamente non ripongono la loro gloria nelle parole degli uomini, ma la nascondono nella loro coscienza. E ci sono poi molti che affliggono il loro corpo con l'astinenza, ma per questa stessa loro astinenza cercano gli applausi degli uomini.

Gertrude was born of a noble family at Eisleben, in Saxony, about the year of our Lord 1264. At five years of age she offered her virginity and herself to Jesus Christ, in the Benedictine nunnery at Rodalsdorf. From that time forth she was utterly estranged from earthly things, ever striving for things higher, and began to lead a kind of heavenly life. To learning in human letters she added knowledge of the things of God. In the thought thereof she earnestly desired, and soon reached, the perfection of a Christian soul. Of Christ, and of the things in His life, she spoke oftentimes with movings of spirit. The glory of God was the one end of all her thoughts, and to that her every longing and her every act were given. Though God had crowned her with so many and so noble gifts both of nature and of grace, her belief regarding herself was so humble that she was used to number as among the greatest of the wonders of His goodness that He had always in His mercy borne with one who was so utterly unworthy.

In the thirtieth year of her age she was elected Abbess of Rodalsdorf, where she had professed herself in the religious life, and afterwards of Heldelfs. This office she bore for forty years in love, wisdom, and zeal for strict observance, so that the house seemed like an ideal example of a sisterhood of perfect nuns. To each one she was a mother and a teacher, and yet would be as the least of all, being in sooth in all lowliness among them as she that served. That she might be more utterly God's only, she tormented her body with sleeplessness, hunger, and other afflictions, but withal ever true to herself, stood forth a pattern of innocency, gentleness, and long-suffering. The salvation of her neighbours was her constant earnest endeavour, and her godly toil bore abundant fruit. The love of God oftentimes threw her into trances, and she was given the grace of the deepest contemplation, even to union of spirit with God.

Christ Himself, to show what such a bride was to Him, revealed that He had in the heart of Gertrude a pleasant dwelling-place. The Virgin Mother of God she ever sought with deep reverence as a mother and warden whom she had received from Jesus Himself, and from her she had many benefits. Toward the most Divine Sacrament of the Eucharist, and the sufferings of the Lord, her soul was moved with love and gratitude, so that she sometimes wept abundantly. She helped with daily gifts and prayers the souls of the just condemned to the purifying fire. She wrote much for the fostering of godliness. She was glorified also by revelations from God, and by the gift of prophecy. Her last illness was rather the wasting of a home-sickness to be with God than a decay of the flesh, and she left this life (to live the undying life in Him, upon the 17th day of November,) in the year of our Lord 1292. God made her bright with miracles both during her life and after her death.

Dearly beloved brethren oftentimes do I warn you to fly corrupt conversation, and to keep yourselves unspotted from the world. But the portion which is this day read from the Holy Gospel doth oblige me to say that even to these good things which ye do, ye must needs take all careful heed. Look ye well to it, that, when ye work righteousness, ye do it not as seeking the praise and admiration of men, for if the lust of praise do once creep in, that which seemeth so fair without, loseth its reward within. Behold how the Redeemer speaketh of these ten virgins. He calleth them all virgins, yet entered not all of them into the door of blessedness, for there were some of them who sought outwardly the honour of virginity, but would take no oil within their vessels with their lamps.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is one of those wise virgins, whom the Lord found watching, for when she took her lamp, she took oil with her.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 17th 2026, the 7th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

In England, holy Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln. He was a Charter House Monk, who was called to rule the Church of Lincoln, was famous for many miracles, and died an holy death, (in the year 1200.)
At Neo-Caesarea, in Pontus, (about the year 270,) holy Gregory, Archbishop of that see, who was famous for teaching and holiness, and who came to be called the Wonder-worker, on account of the great signs and wonders which he worked to the great glory of the churches, whose feast we keep upon the 27th day of this present month of November.
In Palestine, the holy martyrs Alphaeus and Zacchaeus, who were put to death after suffering many torments, in the first year of the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Cordova, the holy brother and sister Acisclus and Victoria, both martyrs, who in the same persecution by Diocletian aforesaid, were most cruelly tortured by command of the President Dion, and earned crowns of glory from the hand of the Lord.
At Alexandria, holy Denys, Bishop (of that see,) a man of great learning, and glorious on account of his many confessions and his diverse sufferings and torments, who at length fell asleep in the Lord, full of days but still a Confessor, in the time of the Emperors Valerian and Gallienus, (in the year 265.)
At Orleans, (in the year 453,) holy Anian, Bishop (of that see,) the preciousness of whose death, in the sight of the Lord, is attested by many miracles.
At Tours, (in the year 595,) holy Gregory, Bishop (of that see.)
At Florence, the holy Confessor Eugene, a Deacon of blessed Zenobius, Bishop of that see.
In Germany, (in the year 1334,) the holy Virgin Gertrude, of the Order of St. Benedict, eminent for her gift of revelations, whose feast we have kept upon the 15th day of this present month.
