Gregorio, vescovo di Neocesarea nel Ponto, illustre per santità e dottrina, e più ancora per prodigi e miracoli, che furono tanti e sì strepitosi da essere chiamato Taumaturgo, e paragonato, per testimonianza di san Basilio, a Mosè, ai Profeti e agli Apostoli; colle sue preghiere spostò una montagna, che impediva la costruzione d'una chiesa. Di più prosciugò una palude, ch'era causa di discordia tra fratelli. Il fiume Lica inondando con grave danno la campagna, egli piantò il bastone che gli serviva d'appoggio, e che crebbe subito in albero verdeggiante, sulla sua sponda, e l'arrestò in tal guisa, che poi mai più oltrepassò questo limite.

Sul punto di morire, avendo chiesto quanti infedeli rimanevano ancora nella città di Neocesarea, ed essendogli risposto essercene solo diciassette, rendendo grazie a Dio: «Tanti fedeli, disse, c'erano al principio del mio episcopato». Scrisse parecchie opere, colle quali ancora, e non solo coi miracoli, illustrò la Chiesa di Dio.

Libro 3 Commento su Marco, c.11
I Pagani che hanno scritto delle calunnie contro la Chiesa, sognano accusare i nostri di non aver avuto in Dio una fede piena, perché non hanno potuto trasportare mai le montagne. A questi è da rispondere che non è stato scritto tutto ciò che si è fatto nella Chiesa, come l'attesta anche la Scrittura delle azioni dello stesso Cristo Signor nostro. Quindi si sarebbe potuto fare anche questo, staccare cioè dalla terra una montagna e gettarla in mare, se l'avesse richiesto una necessità. Come leggiamo avvenuto alle preghiere dei beato Padre Gregario vescovo di Neocesarea nel Ponto, uomo eminente per meriti e virtù, che una montagna si spostò tanto dal suo luogo, quanto occorreva di spazio agli abitanti della città.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Volendo infatti edificare una chiesa in luogo d'altronde adatto, ma troppo stretto alla bisogna, essendo che da una parte c'era la roccia del mare, e dall'altra la prossimità di una montagna, si portò di notte sul luogo, e, inginocchiatesi, scongiurò il Signore per la sua promessa di spostare la montagna, secondo la fede del supplicante. Ritornatoci al mattino, trovò che la montagna s'era ritirata di tanto spazio quanto abbisognavano i costruttori della chiesa. Costui dunque poteva, e lo avrebbe potuto qualsiasi altro uomo di egual merito, se le circostanze l'avessero richiesto, impetrare dal Signore, in virtù della sua Fede, che una montagna si staccasse e si gettasse nel mare.

Gregory, Archbishop of Neo-Caesarea, in Pontus, is famous indeed for his holiness and doctrine, but much more so on account of the signs and wonders which he wrought, the number and character of which were so extraordinary that they have gotten him the name of Thaumatourgos, (which is, being interpreted from the Greek, the Wonderworker.) Holy Basil compareth him with Moses, with the Prophets, and with the Apostles, and testifieth that by his prayers he moved a mountain that stood in the way of the building of a Church. Moreover, he dried up a marsh, which was a cause of strife between brothers. Also, when the River Lycus overflowed and wasted the fields, he set his walking-stick on the bank, ~(which stick forthwith grew into a green tree,) and confined the stream within its bed, so that it never more passed that place again.

The heathen, who have written blasphemies against the Church, are used to cast in our teeth that we have not full faith in God, since we have never been able to move mountains. Such should be answered that we do not possess records of everything that hath come to pass in the Church, any more than, the Scripture being witness, we possess records of all the doings of our Lord Christ Himself. ~John xx. 30; xxi. 25. Mountains may have been removed and cast into the sea, in case of need; a like case, indeed, as we read, was that which came to pass at the prayers of the Blessed Father Gregory, Archbishop of Neo-Caesarea, in Pontus, that right worthy and mighty man, when a mountain was moved from one place on land to another place on land, as the dwellers in the city had need.

Gregory was wishful to build a Church in a meet place, but the site was too narrow, being wedged in between a mountain on the one side and a precipice going down into the sea on the other. He came therefore by night to the place, kneeling down, and reminding the Lord of His promise, and calling upon Him to remove the mountain. And in the morning, when he came thither again, he found that the mountain had been removed back, and as much room left for the builders of the Church as they needed. This man therefore would have been able, and any other man of like grace would have been able, if need were, to obtain of the Lord, by the force of his faith, that even a mountain should be removed, and be cast into the sea.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 18 Novembre, Luna 8

A Roma la Dedicazione delle Basiliche dei santi Apostoli Piétro e Pàolo. La prima di esse, ricostruita in forma più maestosa, fu consacrata in questo stesso giorno dal Sommo Pontefice Urbàno ottavo; l'altra poi, quasi interamente distrutta da un miserando incendio e riedificata con maggior magnificenza, venne solennemente consacrata il dieci Dicembre da Pio nono, il quale stabilì che in questo giorno se ne celebrasse l'anniversario.
Ad Antiochia il natale di san Romàno Martire, il quale, al tempo dell'Imperatore Calérlo, mentre il Prefetto Asclepiade irrompeva nella chiesa e cercava di distruggerla dalle fondamenta, esortò gli altri Cristiani a fargli opposizione, e perciò, dopo atroci tormenti e il taglio della lingua (senza la quale nondimeno parlava delle grandezze di Dio), strangolato nel carcere con un laccio, fu coronato con un illustre martirio. Fu pure martirizzato prima di lui un fanciulletto, per nome Bàrula, il quale, essendo stato interrogato dallo stesso Prefetto se fosse meglio adorare un solo Dio ovvero più dèi, ed avendo risposto doversi credere nel solo Dio, che è adorato dai Cristiani, perciò, battuto colle verghe, fu fatto decapitare.
Così pure ad Antiochia sant'Esichio Martire, il quale, essendo soldato, ed avendo udito l'ordine, che chiunque non sacrificasse agli idoli, deponesse il cingolo militare, depose subito il cingolo; per il che fu fatto precipitare nel fiume, dopo che gli venne legato un gran sasso alla mano destra.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 18th 2026, the 8th day of the Moon, is kept the feast of the Dedication of the two Cathedral Churches of St. Peter and of St. Paul at Rome. The Church of St Peter, after being rebuilt on a larger scale, was solemnly consecrated by Urban VIII upon the 18th day of November (in the year 1626.) The Church of St. Paul had been almost entirely destroyed by a lamentable fire, and was rebuilt in a more splendid manner, and consecrated anew by Pius IX upon the 10th day of December but he transferred the yearly feast of the Dedication thereof to the same day as that of the Church of St. Peter.
Upon the same 18th day of November, were born into the better life:

At Antioch, the holy martyr Romanus. In the time of the Emperor Galerius, when the Prefect Asclepiades was assailing the Church and seeking utterly to overthrow it, Romanus exhorted the other Christians to gainsay him. For this cause he was put to horrid torments, and his tongue was cut out but thereafter he still uttered the praise of God. Then he was strangled in prison, and so was crowned by a famous martyrdom.
Before him there suffered also the little lad Barula, who was asked by Romanus whether it were better to worship one God or many gods, and answered that we ought to believe in the one God whom the Christians worship for the saying of the which thing he was first flogged and then beheaded.
Likewise at Antioch, (about the year 304,) the holy martyr Hesychius. He was a soldier, but when he heard the command that whosoever would not sacrifice to idols should cast away his military belt, he straightway took off his belt, for which cause a large stone was tied to his right hand, and he was thrown into the river.
On the same day, (in the fifth century,) the holy martyrs Oriculus and his Companions, who suffered for the Catholic faith in the persecution under the Vandals.
At Mainz, holy Maximus, Bishop of that see, who suffered many things from the Arians in the time of the Emperor Constantius, and died a Confessor.
At Tours, (in the year 942,) blessed Odo, Abbot of Cluny.
At Antioch, (about the year 782,) the holy monk Thomas, in whose honour the Antiochenes keep a solemn feast-day every year on account of a plague which was stayed by his prayers.
At Lucca, in Tuscany, is commemorated the finding, (in the year 800,) of the body of the holy Confessor Finnan, Bishop (of that see, a son of Ultach, King of Ulster.)
