Lettura 4
Fra i santuari venerati altra volta dai cristiani, i più celebri e più frequentati erano quelli nei quali fossero stati sepolti corpi di Santi, o ci fosse vestigio o ricordo di Martiri. Fra questi santi luoghi fu sempre celebre sopra tutti quella parte del Vaticano, ch'è chiamata Confessione di san Pietro. Infatti i Cristiani vi accorrevano da tutte le parti del mondo, come alla pietra solida della fede e al fondamento della Chiesa, per venerarvi colla più grande religione e pietà il luogo consacrato dalla tomba del Principe degli Apostoli.

Lettura 5
L'imperatore Costantino il Grande vi andò otto giorni dopo aver ricevuto il battesimo, e, deposto il diadema, e prostrato per terra, versò abbondanti lacrime. Quindi, presa zappa e bidente, si mise a scavar terra; e dopo averne portata via dodici corbe in onore dei dodici Apostoli, e designato il posto della basilica del Principe degli Apostoli, vi fece costruire una chiesa, Papa san Silvestro la dedicò il 18 Novembre alla stessa guisa che aveva consacrato il 9 pure di Novembre la chiesa del Laterano, erigendovi un altare di pietra dopo averlo unto col crisma; e ordinò che quindinnanzi non si costruissero più che altari di pietra. Il beato Silvestro dedicò ancora la basilica di san Paolo Apostolo innalzata colla più grande munificenza sulla via Ostiense dallo stesso imperatore Costantino. Il quale imperatore arricchì queste basiliche di molti poderi, e le adornò di splendidi doni.

Lettura 6
Ora la basilica Vaticana minacciando rovina per effetto del tempo, e ricostruita dalle fondamenta su piano più vasto e magnifico, grazie alla pietà di molti Papi, Urbano VIII la consacrò solennemente nell'anno 1626, in questo medesimo giorno della sua primitiva erezione. La basilica Ostiense poi, quasi interamente distrutta da un terribile incendio nell'anno 1823, rifatta ancora più splendida di prima, e quasi vendicata dal disastro, grazie alla cura indefessa di quattro Pontefici, Pio IX colta la felicissima occasione della proclamazione del dogma dell'immacolata Concezione della beata Vergine Maria fatta dianzi da lui, e che aveva attratto a Roma un'ingente moltitudine di cardinali e di vescovi anche dalle più remote regioni dell'orbe cattolico, la dedicò solennemente il 10 Dicembre dell'anno 1854, circondato da quella corona di membri del sacro collegio e di vescovi, e fissò a questo giorno la memoria di sì solenne celebrazione.

Libro 27 dei Morali, cap. 27, dopo la metà
Se bramiamo d'essere veramente saggi e di contemplare la stessa sapienza, riconosciamoci umilmente di essere stolti. Abbandoniamo una sapienza nociva e apprendiamo una stoltezza degna di lode. Poiché sta scritto: «Dio ha scelto le cose stolte del mondo per confondere i sapienti» I Cor. I, 27. Onde si dice ancora: «Se alcuno tra di voi si tiene per sapiente in questo mondo, diventi stolto al fin d' essere sapiente» 1 Cor. 3, 18. Quindi le parole del racconto evangelico ci attestano che Zaccheo, non potendo veder niente a motivo della folla, montò su un albero di sicomoro per vedere il Signore che passava. Sicomoro. infatti significa fico stolto.

Il piccolo Zaccheo dunque montò sui sicomoro e vide il Signore : perché quelli che scelgono umilmente ciò che il mondo reputa stolto, contemplano chiaramente la sapienza di Dio. Ora la folla impedisce alla nostra piccolezza di vedere il Signore ; poiché il tumulto delle sollecitudini del secolo opprime l'infermità dello spirito umano così che non miri la luce della verità. Ma noi montiamo saggiamente sul sicomoro, se custodiamo con cura nel nostro spirito questa stoltezza che ci viene consigliata da Dio. Poiché che v'ha di più stolto in questo mondo che non ricercare i beni perduti, abbandonare al rapitori ciò che si possiede, non rendere alcuna ingiuria per le ingiurie ricevute, anzi non opporre che pazienza a un crescere di oltraggi?

Among the hallowed places which have from of old time been held in honour among Christians, the most famous and sought after were those where the bodies of the Saints were buried, or where there was some trace or token of the Martyrs. Whither came the Emperor Constantine the Great upon the eighth day after his Baptism, and, taking off his crown, cast himself down upon the ground, and wept abundantly. Then presently he took a spade and pick-axe, and began to break up the earth, whereof he carried away twelve baskets-full in honour of the twelve Apostles, and built a Church upon that spot, appointed for the Cathedral Church of the Prince of the Apostles. This Church was hallowed by holy Pope Sylvester upon the 18th day of November, in like manner as he had hallowed the Church of the Lateran upon the 9th day of the same month. In this Church did the Pope set up an altar of stone, and pour ointment thereon, and ordain that from thenceforth no altars should be set up, save of stone. The same Emperor Constantine likewise built a very stately Church upon the road to Ostia, in honour of the holy Apostle Paul, which Church also was hallowed by the blessed Sylvester. These Churches the Emperor enriched by grants of much land, and adorned with exceedingly rich gifts.

Reading 6
The Church of St. Peter upon the Vatican fell in course of time to ruins, and having been rebuilt from the foundations, enlarged and garnished, by the zeal of many Popes, was solemnly consecrated anew by Urban VIII, upon the same day, in the year 1628. The Church of St. Paul upon the road to Ostia was almost entirely consumed by fire in the year 1823, but was rebuilt in a more splendid form and, as it were, raised from the dead, by the unwearied zeal of four successive Popes. In the year 1854 Pius IX seized the happy occasion when the doctrine concerning the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, which he had just set forth, had drawn together to Rome a great multitude of Cardinals and Bishops from all quarters of the Catholic world, solemnly to dedicate this new Church in their presence upon the 10th day of December in the year aforesaid; but he decreed that the yearly Feast in honour of that dedication should be kept upon this day, being the same as that of the Dedication of the Church of St. Peter.

If we would be truly wise, and behold wisdom herself, we must humbly acknowledge ourselves to be fools. Let us cast away harmful wisdom, and learn praiseworthy folly. For this reason indeed is it written God hath chosen the foolish things of the world, to confound the wise. 1 Cor. 1:27 And again it is said If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 3:18. And unto this doth the very Gospel bear witness, wherein it is said that Zacchaeus sought to see Jesus, Who He was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him; for He was to pass that way. For this name Sycamore, being interpreted, signifieth the Foolish Fig.

Little Zacchaeus therefore accepted the humiliation of having recourse to the sycamore and saw the Lord. They who humbly choose to be fools in the estimation of the world, have a deep insight into the wisdom of God. The press standeth in our way, on account of our little stature, when we are fain to see the Lord; for the toilsome din of worldly business tormenteth our weak minds, so as to hinder our perceiving the light of the truth. But we climb up wisely into the sycamore tree, if we willingly give up our minds to that folly which God giveth unto us. What can be more utter folly (in this world) than not to seek for that we have lost, to leave that whereof we have been robbed in the hands of our despoilers, to take no revenge for wrongs which have been done us, yea, even to offer to him that taketh away our cloak, our coat also, and be patient?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

He may indeed, as yet, not be seen face to Face, but by this wise folly the inward eye may see the Wisdom of God, as it were, passing by, even that Wisdom Which they that are wise in their own conceit cannot see. They are mixed up in the overbearing press of their own imaginations, and have not yet found the sycamore tree where into to climb up, if they would see the Lord.

A Roma, sulla via Appia, il natale di san Màssimo, Prete e Martire, il quale, avendo patito nella persecuzione di Valeriàno, fu deposto presso il corpo di san Sisto.
Ad Ecija, nella Spagna, il beato Crispino Vescovo, il quale, decapitato, conquistò la gloria del martirio.
Nello stesso giorno san Fàusto, Diacono di Alessàndria, il quale prima, nella persecuzione di Valeriàno, fu mandato in esilio insieme con san Dionigi; quindi, essendo già vecchio, nella persecuzione di Diocleziàno, fu trapassato dalla spada, e in tal modo compì il martirio.
A Cesarèa, nella Cappadócia, san Bàrlaam Martire, il quale, quantunque incolto e rude, fortificato dalla sapienza di Cristo, vinse il tiranno, e colla invitta costanza della fede superò le stesse fiamme; nel suo giorno natalizio san Basilio Magno fece un celebre discorso.
A Vienne, in Frància, i santi Martiri Severino, Esupério e Feliciàno, i cui corpi, dopo il corso di molti anni, trovati per loro rivelazione, e trasportati onorevolmente dal Vescovo, dal clero e dal popolo di quella città, furono con degno onore sepolti.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 19th 2026, the 9th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Marburg, in Germany, (in the year 1231,) the holy Widow Elizabeth, (Landgravine of Hesse and Thuringia,) of the third Order of St Francis, daughter of Andrew II, King of Hungary, busied without ceasing in works of mercy and famous for miracles.
On the same day, the holy martyr, Pope Pontian, who was exiled to Sardinia along with the Priest Hippolytus, under the Emperor Alexander, and was there cudgelled to death. His body was brought to Rome by blessed Pope Fabian, and buried in the cemetery of Kallistus.
At Samaria, the holy Prophet Obadiah.
At Rome, upon the Appian Way, the holy martyr Maximus, a Priest, who suffered in the persecution under the Emperor Valerian, and was buried hard by holy Pope Xystus.
At Caesarea, in Cappadocia, the holy martyr Barlaam. He was an unlettered peasant, but filled with the wisdom of Christ, and by the steadfastness of his faith conquered the tyrant (Diocletian) and his fire. Holy Basil the Great preached a famous sermon upon his feast-day.
In the city of Ecija, blessed Crispin, Bishop (of that see,) who was beheaded, and so won the glory of martyrdom.
At Vienne, in Gaul, (in the second century,) the holy martyrs Severinus, Exuperius, and Felician after many years had passed they themselves revealed where their bodies were lying the which, being so found, were honourably taken up by the Bishop, clergy, and people of that city, and buried again with due reverence.
Upon the same day, holy Faustus, a Deacon of Alexandria, who was first sent into exile along with holy Denys in the persecution under the Emperor Valerian, and afterwards in his old age was beheaded in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
In Isauria, under the Emperor Diocletian and the Tribune Aquilinus, the holy martyrs Azas and a hundred and fifty Companions, all soldiers.
℣. And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.
