Quando il desiderio di peccare t'invade, vorrei che pensassi a quel formidabile e terribile tribunale di Cristo, al quale egli presiederà giudice su trono alto ed eccelso; e dove ogni creatura comparirà ritta e tremante dinanzi alla sua gloriosa presenza. Vi saremo condotti pure noi, uno a uno, per rendere conto delle azioni della nostra vita. Subito dopo, quelli che avranno commesso motto male in vita, si vedranno circondati da angeli terribili e deformi, dallo sguardo di fuoco, spiranti fuoco, mostrando con ciò la crudeltà del loro disegno e volontà, facendo vedere la loro tristezza e l'odio che portano al genere umano colla nerezza del loro volto simile alla notte.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Questo è il timore del Signore che il profeta promette d'insegnarci. Ed egli non ha promesso semplicemente d'insegnarlo, ma di insegnarlo a quelli che lo vorranno ascoltare: non a quelli che si lasciano trascinare ben lontano, ma a quelli che accorrono desiderosi della salute: non a quelli che si rendono estranei alle promesse, ma a quelli che col battesimo sono stati fatti figli di adozione, riconciliati e uniti allo stesso Verbo, Perciò «Venite» dice, cioè per mezzo delle buone opere avvicinatevi a me, «o figli», voi che per mezzo della rigenerazione avete meritato d'essere figli della luce «ascoltate», voi che avete aperte le orecchie del cuore; «io v'insegnerò a temere il Signore» Ps. 33,l2; quello cioè che un po' più sopra abbiamo descritto nel nostro discorso.

L'invito fattoci di sforzarci di comprendere, indica che la profezia non è senza mistero. Ora noi leggiamo così in Daniele. «E alla metà della settimana cesseranno il sacrificio e l'oblazione, e nel tempio ci sarà l'abominazione della desolazione, e la desolazione durerà! sino alla consumazione e sino alla fine» Dan. 9,27. Di ciò parla anche l'Apostolo (dicendo) che «l'uomo d'iniquità è l'oppositore che s'innalza contro tutto ciò che si dice Dio e si adora; tanto da osare di assidersi nel tempio di Dio, spacciandosi per Dio» 2Thess. 2,4: ed esso verrà accompagnato dalla potenza di satana, per far perire e ridurre nell'abbandono di Dio quelli che l'avranno accolto.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

E siccome, secondo l'antica Scrittura, la parola abbominazione vuol dire idolo; perciò si aggiunge, della desolazione, perché nel tempio già rovinato e distrutto fu posto l'idolo.

«L'abbominazione della desolazione» si può intendere anche ogni dottrina perversa: così, se noi vedremo l'errore drizzarsi nel luogo santo, cioè nella Chiesa, e spacciarsi per Dio, dobbiamo fuggire dalla Giudea sui monti, ossia, abbandonare «la Lettera che uccide» 2Cor. 3,6 e la perversità dei Giudei, è rifugiarci sui monti eterni, dall'alto dei quali Dio fa risplendere la sua mirabile Luce; e starcene sul tetto e sul terrazzo, dove non possono arrivare i dardi infuocati del diavolo, senza discendere a prendere alcunché dalla casa della nostra vita primiera, né andare a cercare ciò ch'è dietro di noi, ma piuttosto seminare nel campo spirituale delle Scritture per raccoglierne dei frutti; né tornare a prendere un'altra tunica, che agli Apostoli fu proibito di avere.

Presently there will be found, by the sides of those who have in life wrought much evil, dreadful and hideous angels with faces of fire, and burning breath, appointed thereto, and showing their evil will, in appearance like the night, in their despair and hatred of mankind.

This injunction to whoso readeth, to understand, showeth that there is here something mysterious. In Daniel we read as followeth: “And in the midst of the week the sacrifice and the oblations shall be taken away and in the temple there shall be the abomination of desolation, even until the consummation of the time and a consummation shall be given to the desolation.” ix. 27. It is of this same thing that the Apostle speaketh, when he saith that a man of iniquity, even an adversary, shall be exalted against whatsoever is called God, or is worshipped so that he shall even dare to stand in the temple of God, and to show himself as God whose coming shall, according to the working of Satan, destroy and banish away from God all who shall receive him.

This prophecy may be understood either (first) simply of Antichrist, (secondly) of the statue of Caesar, which Pilate set up in the Temple, or (thirdly) of the statue of Hadrian on horse-back, which hath stood, even until our own day, upon the site of the Holy of Holies. In the Scriptures of the Old Testament “abomination” is a word very often used for an idol, and the farther title “of desolation” is added to identify an idol erected upon the site of the desolate and ruined temple.

Il natale di san Clemènte primo. Papa e martire, il quale fu il terzo che tenne il Pontificato dopo il beato Piètro Apostolo, e, nella persecuzione di Traiàno, relegato nel Chersonèso, ivi, precipitato in mare con un'ancora legata al collo, fu coronato col martirio. Il suo corpo, al tempo del Sommo Pontefice Adriàno secondo, fu trasportato a Roma dai santi fratelli Cirillo e Metódio, ed onorevolmente sepolto nella chiesa, che già prima era stata edificata sotto il suo nome.
A Roma santa Felicita Martire, madre di sette figli Martiri, la quale, dopo di loro, per ordine dell'Imperatore Marco Antonino, fu per Cristo decapitata.
A Cizico, nell'EUespònto, san Sisinio Martire, il quale nella persecuzione dell'Imperatore Diocleziàno, dopo molti tormenti, fu ucciso colla spada.
A Mèrida, nella Spagna, santa Lucrézia, Vergine e Martire, la quale compì il martirio nella medesima persecuzione, sotto il Preside Daciàno.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 23rd 2026, the 13th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

The holy Pope Clement, he was the third, after the blessed Apostle Peter, who held the Papacy. In the persecution under the Emperor Trajan he was sent to the Crimea, where he was sunk in the sea with an anchor tied to his neck, and so received the crown of martyrdom. In the time of Pope Nicholas I his body was brought to Rome and honourably buried in the church which had already been built in his name.
Likewise, at Rome, the holy martyr Felicity, mother of seven sons, who were all likewise martyrs. After they had suffered, the Emperor Mark Antonine commanded her also to be beheaded for Christ's sake.
At Merida, in Spain, the holy Virgin and martyr Lucretia, who suffered martyrdom under the President Dacian, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Cyzicus, on the Hellespont, the holy martyr Sisinius, who was slain with the sword, after suffering many torments, during the same persecution.
At Iconium, in Lycaonia, holy Amphilochius, Bishop (of that see,) the fellow of holy Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus, in the desert and in the Episcopate. He went through many contendings for the Catholic faith's sake, but fell asleep at length in peace, famous for holiness and teaching.
At Girgenti, in Sicily, (at the end of the sixth century,) deceased holy Gregory, Bishop (of that see.)
In the country of Hesbaye/Haspengouw, (in the seventh century,) the holy Confessor Trudo, the Priest.
