Lettura 4
Clemente, Romano, figlio di Faustino, nacque nei quartiere del Celio, fu discepolo di san Pietro, e di lui fa menzione (san) Paolo scrivendo ai Filippesi: «Anche te, o compagno fedele, io prego di aiutare quelle che hanno faticato con me per il Vangelo, insieme con Clemente e cogli altri miei collaboratori, i cui nomi sono nel libro della vita» Philipp. 4,3. Egli divise Roma in sette regioni fra sette notai, assegnandone una per uno, coll'incarico di raccogliere e trascrivere con somma diligenza tutto ciò che si sapeva sulle sofferenze e gli atti dei Martiri. Lui stesso compose accuratamente più opere utili ad illustrazione della religione cristiana.

℟. Mentre san Clemente pregava, gli apparve l'Agnello di Dio,

Lettura 5
Convertendo egli molti alla fede di Cristo colla sua dottrina e santità di vita, l'imperatore Adriano lo relegò al di là del Ponto-Eusíno, nel deserto della città di Chersona; dove trovò duemila Cristiani condannativi dallo stesso Traiano. I quali essendo impiegati a cavare e tagliar marmi e soffrendo per mancanza di acqua, Clemente, dopo aver pregato, salì sul colle vicino, sulla cui vetta vide un Agnello che toccava coi piede destro una sorgente d'acqua dolce, ch'egli vi faceva scaturire, e tutti si estinsero la loro sete. A questo miracolo molti ife- si convertirono alla fede di Cristo, e cominciarono anche a concepire venerazione per la santità di Clemente.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Lettura 6
Traiano irritato da queste cose, inviò un emissario coll'ordine d'attaccare una ancora al collo di Clemente, e di sommergerlo nel mare. L'ordine fu eseguito, ma i Cristiani postisi a pregare sulla spiaggia, il mare si ritirò di tre miglia; e accorsi fin là, trovarono un piccolo edificio di marmo in forma di tempio, con entro un'urna di pietra contenente il corpo del Martire, e vicino ad esso l'ancora colla quale era stato sommerso. Gli abitanti colpiti da questo miracolo, abbracciarono la fede di Cristo. Il suo corpo in seguito, sotto il pontificato di Nicolò I, fu trasportato a Roma, e riposto nella chiesa dello stesso san Clemente. Una chiesa fu anche dedicata sotto il suo nome in quello stesso luogo dell'isola, donde era scaturita prodigiosamente la fontana. Egli visse nel pontificato nove anni, sei mesi e sei giorni. Tenne due ordinazioni nel mese di Dicembre, nelle quali creò dieci preti, due diaconi, quindici vescovi per luoghi diversi.

Come ci riferisce la lettura evangelica. Gesù lui interrogò i discepoli che cosa pensassero di in mezzo a tanti pareri diversi. E san Pietro rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente». Allora il Signore gli disse: «Beato te, o Simone, figlio di Giona, perché questo non ti è stato rivelato dalla carne o dal sangue, ma dal Padre mio che sta nei cieli. Perciò io ti dico che tu sei Pietro e su questa pietra edificherò la mia Chiesa e le porte dell'inferno non prevarranno mai contro di essa. E a te darò le chiavi del regno dei cieli, e qualunque cosa avrai legata sulla terra, sarà legata anche nei cieli, e qualun que cosa avrai sciolta sulla terra, sarà sciolta anche nei cieli». L»ordine stabilito da Gesù Cristo rimane ancora; e san Pietro, che ha conservato fino ad oggi la solidità della pietra, non abbandonò mai il governo della Chiesa di cui fu incaricato.

Nella Chiesa intera, infatti, ogni giorno Pietro dice: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente»; ed ogni lingua che riconosce il Signore viene istruita col magistero di tale voce. Tale fede sconfigge il diavolo e scioglie i legami di coloro che egli tiene prigionieri. Essa fa entrare nel cielo coloro che ha strappato alla terra e le porte dell'inferno non possono prevalere contro di essa. È stata infatti per potenza divina munita di una tale saldezza che mai la potrà corrompere la malvagità degli eretici né la potrà superare la perfidia dei pagani. Con tali disposizioni dunque, dilettissimi, e con razionale ossequio si celebri la festività odierna: affinché nell'umiltà della mia persona venga riconosciuto e onoralo colui, nel quale continua la cura che tutti i pastori hanno nella custodia delle pecore loro affidate e la cui dignità non viene meno per l'indegnità dell'erede.

Omelia 3 sul Vangelo
La beata Felicita, di cui oggi celebriamo il natale, temè di lasciare dopo di sé in questa vita i suoi sette figli, alla stessa guisa che i parenti, che amano carnalmente, sogliono temere che muoiano prima di loro. Difatti presa nel più forte della persecuzione, ella confermò co' suoi discorsi i cuori dei figli nell'amore della patria celeste; diventando così madre quanto allo spirito di quelli di cui era divenuta madre quanto al corpo, e generando a Dio colle sue parole quelli che aveva messi al mondo. La chiamerò io forse Martire questa donna? Anzi più che Martire; poiché, lasciando partire prima di sé per il regno dei cieli sette esseri cari, ella morì sette volte vedendoli morire. Andò la prima al martirio, ma non vi pervenne che l'ottava.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Clement, the son of Faustinus, was a Roman, from the quarter of the Coelian Mount. He was a disciple of the blessed Peter, and is the same concerning whom Paul saith, writing to the Philippians And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the Gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow-labourers, whose names are written in the book of life. ~iv. 3. (He succeeded Cletus as Bishop of Rome.) He it was who divided the seven quarters of the city among seven scribes, one to each, whose duty it was to search out most carefully, and record in writing the sufferings and acts of the Martyrs. He himself also wrote much, and that most orthodox and healthy, whereby he clearly explained the Christian Religion.

His teaching and the holiness of his life brought many to believe in Christ, and he was therefore exiled by the Emperor Trajan to Kherson, in the Crimea, where he found two thousand Christians, who had been condemned by the same Trajan. There they all worked in the marble quarries. During their labour they suffered for want of water, and Clement prayed, and then went up an hill hard by, on the top whereof he saw a Lamb standing, touching with its right foot a flowing spring of sweet waters. Therewith they all quenched their thirst, and by this miracle many unbelievers were brought to believe in Christ, and began to honour the holiness of Clement.

* That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

These things moved Trajan to send a messenger to the Crimea, who tied an anchor about Clement's neck, and cast him into the deep of the sea. After it had been done, while the Christians were praying on the shore, the sea went back three miles, and when they followed it, they found a grotto of marble, in form like a temple, and therein a stone coffin wherein was laid the body of the Martyr, and, hard by, the anchor wherewith he had been sunk. Then were the country people moved to receive the faith of Christ. The body of Clement was afterwards brought to Rome, in the time of Pope Nicholas I, and buried in his own Church. San Giovanni della Croce Sacerdote, Confessore e Dottore della Chiesa, compagno di santa Terésa nella riforma dei Carmelitani; il cui giorno natalizio si commemora il quattordici Dicembre.
Nello stesso giorno il natale di san Crisógono Martire, il quale, dopo aver lungamente sofferto catene e prigionia per la costantissima confessione di Cristo, per ordine di Diocleziano fu condotto ad Aquiléia, e finalmente, decapitato e gettato in mare, compì il martirio.
A Roma san Crescenziàno Martire, il quale viene ricordato nella passione del beato Marcéllo Papa.
Presso Corinto sant'Alessandro Martire, il quale, sotto Giuliano l'Apòstata ed il Preside Sallustio, per la fede di Cristo combattè fino alla morte.
A Perugia san Felicissimo Martire.
Ad Amélia, nell'Umbria, santa Firmina, Vergine e Martire, la quale, nella persecuzione dell'Imperatore Diocleziano, in vari modi fu tormentata, e da ultimo, appesa e con fiaccole ardenti bruciata, rese a Dio l'immacolato suo spirito.
A Còrdova, in Spagna, le sante Vergini e Martiri Flora e Maria, le quali, dopo lunga prigionia, nella persecuzione degli Arabi, furono uccise colla spada.
A Milano san Protàsio Vescovo, il quale nel Concilio di Sàrdica difese presso l'Imperatore Costante la causa di Atanasio, e finalmente, dopo aver sostenuto molte fatiche per la Chiesa affidatagli e per la religione, passò al Signore.
Nel territorio di Alvérnia san Porziàno Abate, il quale rifulse per miracoli sotto il Re Teodorico. Il suo nome poi fu dato tanto al monastero che lo stesso Santo presiedette, quanto alla città che fu in seguito edificata nel medesimo luogo.
A Blaye, in Frància, san Romàno Prete, la cui mirabile santità è resa illustre dalla gloria dei miracoli.

30:13 Sono divenuto come un vaso spezzato. * Poiché ho udito i vituperi di molti, che mi dimorano intorno.
30:14 Mentre si riunivano contro di me, * e tennero consiglio di togliermi la vita.
30:15 Ma io sperai in te, o Signore: * io dissi: tu sei il mio Dio: nelle tue mani le mie sorti.
30:16 Liberami dalle mani dei miei nemici, * e da coloro che mi perseguitano.
30:17 Fa risplendere la tua faccia sopra il tuo servo, salvami nella tua misericordia. * Che io non resti confuso, o Signore, perché ti ho invocato.
30:18 Siano svergognati gli empi, e condotti all'inferno. * Ammutoliscano le labbra ingannatrici,
30:19 che proferiscono iniquità contro il giusto * con superbia e con disprezzo.
