Giovanni della Croce, nato da pii genitori a Fontibèra in Spagna fin dai primi anni si vide chiaramente come sarebbe stato caro alla Vergine Madre di Dio; poiché a cinque anni caduto in un pozzo, ne uscì incolume sostenuto colle mani dalla stessa Madre di Dio. Arse poi di tal desiderio di soffrire, che a nove anni lasciava un letto molle per stendersi d'ordinario sopra dei sarmenti. Adolescente, si dedicò al servizio dei poveri malati nell'ospedale di Medina del Campo, e il grande ardore della sua carità lo teneva sempre pronto a prestar loro i più umili servizi. E gli altri, eccitati dal suo esempio, compivano con più zelo gli stessi atti di carità. Ma chiamato a cose più alte, abbracciò l'ordine della beata Vergine Maria del Monte Carmelo; dove, ordinato sacerdote per obbedienza, pieno d'ardore per una disciplina più severa e un tenore di vita più austero, ottenne dai superiori di seguire la regola primitiva dell'ordine, e d'allora, costantemente penetrato del ricordo della passione del Signore, dichiarò guerra a se stesso, come al più implacabile nemico, e con veglie, digiuni, discipline di ferro, e ogni altra specie di macerazioni in breve ebbe crocifissa la sua carne co' suoi vizi e concupiscenze; così che meritò pienamente che santa Teresa l'annoverasse fra le più pure e sante anime che illustrassero allora la Chiesa di Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Preparato da singolare austerità di vita e dall'esercizio di tutte le virtù, e assiduamente applicato alla contemplazione delle cose divine, provava sovente lunghe e mirabili estasi e bruciava di siffatto amore per Iddio, che si vide il fuoco divino, non potuto contenere più a lungo dentro di lui, uscir fuori e irradiargli tutta la faccia. Sommamente sollecito della salvezza del prossimo, fu instancabile nella predicazione della parola di Dio e nell'amministrazione dei sacramenti. Ricolmo di tanti meriti, e acceso d'un desiderio veemente di promuovere una più stretta disciplina, egli fu dato da Dio come aiuto a santa Teresa per rimettere tra i frati la primitiva osservanza dell'ordine del Carmelo, ch'ella aveva già coll'aiuto di Giovanni ristabilita tra le suore. Pertanto, insieme colla serva di Dio, egli sostenne innumerevoli fatiche nel promuovere questa opera divina, visitando tutte le case che la santa Vergine aveva fondato in tutta la Spagna, non lasciandosi spaventare da nessuna privazione o pericolo. E in esse, come pure in altre moltissime fondate da lui stesso, estese la nuova osservanza, confermandola colle parole e coll'esempio; così che egli è, dopo santa Teresa, meritamente ritenuto il primo maestro e padre dell'ordine dei Carmelitani Scalzi.

Si mantenne sempre vergine, e delle donne impudenti avendo osato d'insidiare al suo pudore, non contento d respingerle, le guadagnò ancora a Cristo. Nello spiegare i secreti divini fu, per giudizio della santa Sede, pari a santa Teresa, e, illuminato dall'alto, scrisse sulla teologia mistica dei libri pieni di sapienza celeste. Interrogato una volta da Cristo che ricompensa domandasse per tante fatiche, rispose Signore, soffrire ed essere disprezzato per te. Benché il suo potere sul demoni, che spesso cacciava dai corpi degli ossessi, il discernimento degli spiriti, il dono di profezia, la gloria dei miracoli l'avessero reso celeberrimo, tuttavia fu sempre sì umile, che domandava spesso al Signore di morire in luogo dove rimanesse a tutti sconosciuto. Esaudito nel voto di soffrire, una crudele malattia l'assalì a Ubéda e, per colmare il suo desiderio di patire, gli sopraggiunsero a una gamba cinque piaghe purulenti ch'egli sopportò eroicamente; e ricevuti piamente e santamente i sacramenti della Chiesa, abbracciato al Crocifisso, che aveva avuto sempre nel cuore e nella bocca, dopo pronunciate le parole: «Nelle tue mani raccomando il mio spirito» Ps. 30,6 s'addormentò nel Signore, il giorno e l'ora che aveva predetto, nell'anno della salute 1591, a 49 anni di età. L'anima sua fu vista volare in alto sotto forma di un globo di fuoco risplendentissimo; il suo corpo poi esalò un odore soavissimo, e tuttora si conserva incorrotto a Segovia con grande venerazione. Glorificato da moltissimi miracoli prima e dopo morte, il sommo Pontefice Benedetto XIII l'iscrisse nel numero dei Santi, e Pio XI con decreto della sacra Congregazione dei Riti, lo dichiarò Dottore della Chiesa universale.

Quindi: Se il sale diventasse scipito, con che cosa lo si potrà render salato? Vale a dire se voi, mediante i quali si devono condire, per così dire, i popoli, per timore delle persecuzioni nel tempo perderete il regno dei cieli, quali saranno gli uomini, mediante i quali si elimini da voi l'errore, dato che il Signore vi ha scelti per eliminare l'errore degli altri?

Quindi: Non serve a nulla il sale scipito, se non per essere gettato fuori e calpestato dagli uomini. Difatti non si può calpestare se non chi è sotto, ma non è sotto colui che, pur subendo molti dolori in terra, col cuore è tuttavia rivolto al cielo.

Crisogono, messo in prigione a Roma sotto l'imperatore Diocleziano, ci visse due anni colle liberalità di sant'Anastasia; la quale, maltrattata da suo marito Publio a causa di Cristo, gli scrisse per domandargli l'aiuto delle sue preghiere, e ne ricevé lettere di consolazione. Ma l'imperatore avendo scritto a Roma che, uccisi tutti i Cristiani che si trovavano in prigione, gli si conducesse ad Aquileia Crisogono, questi vi fu condotto. Reading 4
John of the Cross was born of godly parents at Fontibere, near Avila, in Spain, in the year of our Lord 1542. It began soon to appear that he was foreordained to be an acceptable servant unto the Virgin Mother of God. At five years of age he fell into a well, but the hand of the Mother of God took him up, and saved him from all hurt. So burning was his desire to suffer that when he was nine years old he gave up any softer bed, and used to lie on potsherds. In his youth he devoted himself as a servant in the hospital for the sick poor at Medina del Campo, and embraced with eager charity the meanest offices there, his readiness likewise exciting others to imitate him. In 1563 he obeyed the call to higher things, and entered the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, wherein, by command of his Superiors, he received Priest's Orders. By their leave and his own strong desire for the sternest discipline and the strictest life, he adopted the primitive Rule. Full of the memory of what our Lord suffered, he declared war against himself as his own worst enemy, and carried it on by depriving himself of sleep and food, by iron chains, by whips, and by every kind of self-torture. And in a little while he had crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts thereof. He was indeed worthy that holy Theresa should say of him that he was one of the purest and holiest souls by whom God was then enlightening His Church.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him;

Reading 5
The strange hardness of his life, and the might of his graces, joined to the unceasing concentration of his mind on God, had the effect of oftentimes subjecting him to daily and extraordinary trances. So burning was his love of God that the fire sometimes could not be kept bound within, and brake forth, so that his face shone. The salvation of his neighbours was one of his dearest longings, and he was unwearied in preaching the Word of God, and in administering the Sacraments. As strong in so many good works, and glowing with zeal to make discipline harder, he was given by God to be an helpmeet to holy Theresa, and he aided her to set up again the primitive observance among the brethren of the Order of Mount Carmel, as she had already done among the sisters. In doing God's work, he and God's handmaid together went through toils that cannot be numbered. No discomforts or dangers held him back from going throughout all Spain to visit all and each of the convents which the care of that holy Virgin had founded, and in them, and in very many others erected by her means for spreading the renewed observance, he strengthened it by his word and example. He is indeed worthy to be reckoned second only to the holy Theresa as a professor and founder of the Order of bare-footed Carmelites.

He remained throughout all his life a clean maid, and when some shameless women tried to beguile his modesty, he not only foiled them, but gained them for Christ. In the judgment of the Apostolic See he was as much taught of God as was holy Theresa, for explaining God's hidden mysteries, and he wrote books of mystical theology filled with heavenly wisdom. Christ once asked him what reward he would have for so much work; whereto he answered Lord, that I may suffer, and be disesteemed for thy sake. He was very famous for his power over devils, whom he oftentimes scared out of men's bodies, for discerning of spirits, for the gift of prophecy, and for eminent miracles. He was extraordinarily lowly, and oftentimes entreated of the Lord that he might die in some place where he was unknown. In accordance with his prayer, (he was sent) to Ubeda, (where for three months the Prior imprisoned and cruelly ill-used him during his last sickness.) To crown his love of suffering, he bore uncomplainingly five open sores in his leg, running with water. (At last, upon the 14th day of December,) in the year 1591, being the day, and at the hour foretold by himself, after having in godly and holy wise received the Sacraments of the Church, hugging (the image of) that crucified Saviour of Whom his heart and his mouth had been used to be full, he uttered the words: “Into thy hands I commend my spirit”, and fell asleep in the Lord. As his soul passed away it was received into a glorious cloud of fire. His body yielded a right sweet savour, and is still uncorrupt where it lieth, held in great honour, at Segovia. He was famous for very many miracles both before and since his death, and Pope Benedict XIII numbered his name among those of the Saints.

The Lord would have us understand how that men do lose their power of savouring others with righteousness when they are willing to place their eternal welfare in jeopardy for the sake of any témporal advantage, like as attainment of ease or luxury, or escape from suffering or toil. For that which is eternal, unlike things of this world, can neither be bestowed by men, nor by them taken away. Hence, when he asketh: If the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? he would have us understand the question to be: If ye, by whom mankind is preserved from corruption, be willing to lose the kingdom of heaven so as to escape trials or persecutions in this world, who is there to preserve you from corruption, seeing ye are they that God hath chosen to preserve all others from corruption?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.

And we are to understand the word World in the same sense as the word Earth when he spoke above of the salt of the earth, that is, not that earth whereupon we walk with our bodily feet, but the men which dwell upon the earth; in other words, sinners, for the sweetening and correction of whose corruption, the Lord hath sent his Apostles, as it were, as so much salt. And so by the world we are to understand, not the heaven and the earth, but the men who are in the world and love the world, for the enlightening of whom the Apostles have been sent. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid: that is, what is founded upon the heights of righteousness, whereof the mountain upon which the Lord gave this discourse was itself a figure, is magnificent in the eyes of all men.

Ad Alessandria santa Caterina, Vergine e Martire, la quale, messa in prigione per la confessione della fede cristiana sotto l'Imperatore Massimino, e poi lunghissimamente tormentata cogli scorpioni, finalmente decapitata compì il martirio. Il suo corpo, miracolosamente trasportato dagli Angeli sul monte Sinai, vi è religiosamente venerato dal numeroso concorso di Cristiani.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 25th 2026, the 15th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Alexandria, the holy Virgin and martyr Katharine. On account of her confession of the Christian faith, she was cast into prison under the Emperor Maximinus. She was long flogged with loaded scourges, and at length beheaded. Her body was in wondrous wise carried by angels to Mount Sinai, where it is devoutly honoured by the pilgrimages of multitudes of Christians.
At Rome, the holy martyr Moses, a Priest, who was among those whom holy Cyprian oftentimes comforted by his letters while they were kept in prison. He contended manfully not only against the Gentiles, but also against the schismatics and Novatian heretics. At length, as is attested by holy Pope Cornelius, he was crowned with an eminent martyrdom in the persecution under the Emperor Decius.
