Caterina, nobile vergine d'Alessandria, congiungendo fin dalla prima età lo studio delle arti liberali coll'ardore della fede, in breve giunse a si alta perfezione di dottrina e di santità, che a diciott'anni sorpassava i più eruditi. Vedendo trascinarsi al supplizio per ordine di Massimino molti Cristiani, ch’erano già stati torturati in varie guise a motivo della loro religione, non temé di presentarsi allo stesso Massimino, e, rimproverandogli la sua empia condotta, gli provò con ragioni piene di sapienza la fede in Cristo esser necessaria per salvarsi.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Lettura 5
Massimino ammirato della sapienza di lei, la fece trattenere, e, radunati d’ogni parte gli uomini più sapienti, promise loro magnifici premi, se convincessero Caterina e la facessero passare dalla fede di Cristo al culto degli idoli. Ma avvenne il contrario. Perché parecchi dei filosofi radunati per confutarla, alla forza e precisione dei suoi ragionamenti si sentirono accesi di sì grande amore per Gesù Cristo, che non esitarono a morire per lui. Allora Massimino cominciò con blandizie e promesse a ridurre Caterina ad altri sentimenti; ma vedendo che tutto era vano, dopo averla fatta battere con verghe e pestare con sferze guernite di piombo, la tenne rinchiusa in carcere undici giorni senza mangiare né bere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Fu allora che la moglie di Massimino e Porfirio, generale dell'esercito, entrati nella prigione per vedere la Vergine, persuasi dai suoi discorsi, credettero in Gesù Cristo e ricevettero poscia la corona del martirio. Intanto Caterina fu tratta di carcere; ed era stata preparata una ruota su cui erano fissate delle spade spesse e taglienti per dilaniare crudelissimamente il corpo della Vergine. Ma questa macchina alle preghiere di Caterina fu tosto ridotta in pezzi; e a questo miracolo molti abbracciarono la fede di Cristo. Massimino divenuto ancor più ostinato nella sua empietà e crudeltà, ordinò di decapitare Caterina. Ed ella, presentata coraggiosamente la testa, se ne volò a ricevere la doppia ricompensa della verginità e del martirio il 25 Novembre; il suo corpo fu miracolosamente trasportato dagli Angeli sul monte Sinai, nell’Arabia.

Omelia 12 sui Vangeli.
Spesso vi raccomando, fratelli carissimi, di fuggire le opere cattive e di evitare la corruzione di questo mondo, ma quest'oggi la lettura del santo Vangelo mi costringe a dirvi di stare molto attenti a non perdere il merito delle vostre buone opere, a non cercare, nel bene che fate, il favore o la stima degli uomini, ad impedire
che si insinui in voi il desiderio della lode e ad agire in modo che, quanto appare di fuori, non sia dentro vuoto di ricompensa. Il Redentore infatti ci parla di dieci vergini, e le dice tutte vergini; eppure non tutte hanno meritato di essere ammesse al soggiorno della beatitudine, perché alcune di esse, mentre cercavano una gloria esteriore della loro verginità, non si curarono di mettere dell'olio nelle loro lampade.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questa è una vergine saggia, che il Signore trovò vigilante: lei, con le lampade, prese con sé anche l'olio.

Lettura 8
Ma prima dobbiamo chiederci che cosa sia il regno dei cieli, o perché lo si paragoni a dieci vergini, ed anche quali vengano dette vergini prudenti e quali vergini stolte. Mentre infatti è certo che nessun reprobo entrerà nel regno dei cieli, perché questo viene paragonato anche a delle vergini stolte? Dobbiamo sapere che spesso nel linguaggio sacro la Chiesa del tempo presente viene chiamata regno dei cieli. Onde altrove il Signore dice: «Il Figlio dell'uomo manderà i suoi angeli, e toglieranno dal suo regno tutti gli scandali». Certamente in quel regno di beatitudine, dove c'è la suprema pace, non si potranno trovare scandali da togliere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ciascuno vive in un corpo che ha cinque sensi; il numero cinque poi, raddoppiato, dà dieci. E, poiché la moltitudine dei fedeli comprende ambedue i sessi, la santa Chiesa si dice simile a dieci vergini. E poiché in essa i cattivi si trovano mescolati coi buoni e i reprobi con gli eletti, giustamente viene paragonata a delle vergini prudenti ed anche a delle vergini stolte. Infatti ci sono molti che vivono nella continenza, che si guardano dagli appetiti esteriori, e dalla speranza sono portati ai beni interiori, che mortificano la propria carne, e anelano alla patria celeste con tutta la forza del loro desiderio, agognano i premi eterni, e non vogliono ricevere lodi umane per le loro fatiche. Questi certamente non ripongono la loro gloria nelle parole degli uomini, ma la nascondono nella loro coscienza. E ci sono poi molti che affliggono il loro corpo con l'astinenza, ma per questa stessa loro astinenza cercano gli applausi degli uomini.

But the event fell contrariwise, for many of the philosophers who had come to dispute with her were overcome by the force and skill of her reasoning, so that the love of Christ Jesus was kindled in them, and they were content even to die for His sake. Then did Maximin strive to beguile Catharine with fair words and promises, and when he found it was lost pains, he caused her to be hided, and bruised with lead-laden whips, and so cast into prison, and neither meat nor drink given to her for the space of eleven days.

But Maximin was hardened in his godlessness and cruelty, and commanded to behead Catharine. She bravely offered her neck to the stroke and passed away hence to receive the twain crowns of maidenhood and martyrdom, upon the 25th day of November. Her body was marvelously laid by angels upon Mount Sinai in Arabia.

But the portion which is this day read from the Holy Gospel doth oblige me to say that even to these good things which ye do, ye must needs take all careful heed. Look ye well to it, that, when ye work righteousness, ye do it not as seeking the praise and admiration of men, for if the lust of praise do once creep in, that which seemeth so fair without, loseth its reward within. Behold how the Redeemer speaketh of these ten virgins. He calleth them all virgins, yet entered not all of them into the door of blessedness, for there were some of them who sought outwardly the honour of virginity, but would take no oil within their vessels with their lamps.

First of all, it is for us to ask What is the kingdom of Heaven? And wherefore shall the same be likened unto ten virgins, whereof, albeit five were wise, yet five were foolish For if the kingdom of heaven be such that there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie, Apoc. xxi. 27, how can it be like unto five virgins which were foolish? The body of every man doth consist of five senses, and five being doubled, is ten. And forasmuch as in the Church the good are for the present mingled with the bad, and the reprobate with the elect, it is rightly said that, of the ten virgins, five are wise and five are foolish. There are many who have self-control, which do keep themselves from lusting after things outward, whose hope beareth them to things inward, who chastise the flesh, who long with intense home-sickness for their Fatherland which is in heaven, who seek an eternal reward, and who will not to receive for their labours the praise of men. These are they who reckon their glory, not in the mouths of men, but in the testimony of their own conscience. And many there be likewise who afflict the body by self-control, and yet who seek for their self-control applause from men.

Presso Fabriano, nel Picèno, il beato Silvéstro Abate, Fondatore della Congregazione dei Monaci Silvestrini.
Ad Alessandria il natale di san Piétro, Vescovo di quella città e Martire, il quale, essendo ornato di ogni virtù, ivi, per ordine di Galério Massimiano, fu decapitato.
Patirono pure ad Alessandria, nella stessa persecuzione, i santi Martiri Fàusto Prete, Didio ed Ammònio, e così pure quattro Vescovi Egiziani, cioè Filèa, Esichio, Pacómio e Teodòro, con altri seicentosessanta, che la spada della persecuzione inviò al cielo.
Presso Fratta, nel territorio di Rovigo, san Bellino, Vescovo di Pàdova e Martire, il quale, essendo un esimio difensore dei diritti della Chiesa, fu dai sicari crudelmente afferrato e con molte ferite ucciso.
A Nicomèdia san Marcéllo Prete, il quale, al tempo di Costànzo, fu dagli Ariani precipitato da una rupe, e in tal modo morì Martire.
A Roma san Siricio, Papa e Confessore, illustre per dottrina, per pietà e per zelo di religione : egli condannò diversi eretici, e con salutarissimi decreti restaurò la disciplina ecclesiastica.

Martyrology {anticipated}
November 26th 2026, the 16th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Fabriano, in the March of Ancona, the blessed Abbot Silvester, founder of the Congregation of Monks of the Order of St Benedict, who are called Silvestrians.
At Alexandria, the holy martyr Peter, Pope of that city, a man enriched with all graces, who was beheaded by order of the Emperor Galerius Maximian.
Likewise at Alexandria, in the same persecution, the holy martyrs Faustus a Priest, Didius, and Ammonius, along with whom are commemorated the Egyptian Bishops Phileas, Hesychius, Pachomius, and Theodore, and six hundred and sixty Others, who were raised to heaven by the sword of the persecutor.
At Nicomedia, the holy Priest Marcellus, who in the time of the Emperor Constantius was thrown over a cliff by the Arians, and so died a martyr.
At Padua, (in the year 1149,) the holy martyr Bellinus, Bishop (of that see.) At Rome, (at the end of the fourth century,) the holy Confessor Pope Siricius, very famous for his teaching, godliness, and zeal for the faith. He condemned diverse heretics and restored the discipline of the Church by healthy enactments.
At Autun, (in the third century,) holy Amator, Bishop (of that see.) At Constance, (in the tenth century,) holy Conrad, Bishop (of that see.) In the country of Rheims, (in the seventh century,) the holy Confessor Basolus.

At Rome, (in the year 1751,) the holy Confessor Leonard of Port Maurice, of the Order of Friars Minor of the stricter observance, who was famous for his zeal for the salvation of souls and his holy journeys throughout Italy, and whose name the Supreme Pontiff Pius IX enrolled among those of the Saints.
