Ma l'invidioso satana cercò con vari terrori di spaventare i suoi monaci, scuotendo violentemente di notte le porte del monastero. Ma l'uomo di Dio, represse sì bene gli attacchi del nemico, che i monaci si confermarono ancor più nella santa vocazione e conobbero meglio la santità del loro padre. Egli rifulse per lo spirito di profezia e altri doni. E siccome li conservava sempre con profonda umiltà, così eccitò contro di sé l'invidia del demonio ; il quale lo precipitò dall'alto della scala dell'oratorio, e sarebbe morto se non l'avesse salvato il prontissimo intervento della Vergine. E riconoscente di tanto benefizio, egli non cessò finché visse, di onoraria d'un culto affatto speciale, e rese l'anima a Dio quasi a novant'anni, illustre per santità e miracoli, il 26 Novembre, nell'anno della salute 1267. Il sommo Pontefice Leone XIII ne estese a tutta la Chiesa l'Ufficio e la Messa.

E siccome li conservava sempre con profonda umiltà, così eccitò contro di sé l'invidia del demonio ; il quale lo precipitò dall'alto della scala dell'oratorio, e sarebbe morto se non l'avesse salvato il prontissimo intervento della Vergine. E riconoscente di tanto benefizio, egli non cessò finché visse, di onoraria d'un culto affatto speciale, e rese l'anima a Dio quasi a novant'anni, illustre per santità e miracoli, il 26 Novembre, nell'anno della salute 1267. Il sommo Pontefice Leone XIII ne estese a tutta la Chiesa l'Ufficio e la Messa.

Grande fiducia! Pietro era pescatore, non era mai stato ricco, si guadagnava il cibo col lavoro delle mani; e tuttavia dice con gran sicurezza: «Abbiamo abbandonato tutto». E siccome non basta solo abbandonare, aggiunge ciò che è perfetto: «E ti abbiamo seguito». Abbiamo fatto quello che hai comandato: che cosa ci darai dunque per ricompensa? E Gesù disse loro : «In verità vi dico: voi che mi avete seguito, quando nella rigenerazione il Figlio dell'uomo siederà sul trono della sua maestà, siederete anche voi su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù d'Israele». Non disse: Voi che avete lasciato ogni cosa, poiché questo lo fece anche il filosofo Crates, e molti altri disprezzarono le ricchezze, ma disse: «Voi che mi avete seguito»; il che è proprio degli apostoli e dei credenti.

Commemorazione: S. Pietro di Alessandria Vescovo e Martire
Pietro, Vescovo d'Alessandria, dopo Teona, uomo santissimo, non solo illustrò collo splendore della sua santità e dottrina l'Egitto, ma fu di luce a tutta la Chiesa di Dio. Durante la persecuzione di Massimiano Galerio sopportò le calamità di quel tempo con tanto coraggio che molti, vedendo la sua ammirabile pazienza, fecero grandi passi nella cristiana virtù. Egli fu il primo a separare dalla comunione dei fedeli Ario, diacono d'Alessandria perché favoriva lo scisma di Melezio. Condannato dallo stesso Massimiano alla pena capitale ed essendo andati a trovarlo in carcere i preti Achille e Alessandro per intercedere a favore di Ario, rispose che durante la notte gli era apparso Gesù con una veste stracciata, e domandatagliene la causa, avergli risposto: Ario ha stracciata così la mia veste, ch'è la Chiesa. Poi predicendo ad essi che gli succederebbero nell'episcopato, proibì di riammettere mai più nella loro comunione Ario, ch'egli sapeva morto davanti a Dio. Gli avvenimenti non tardarono a mostrare che questa rivelazione era veramente da Dio. Infine decapitato nel dodicesimo anno del suo episcopato. Il 26 Novembre, se ne volò a ricevere la corona del martirio.

Pietro, Vescovo d'Alessandria, dopo Teona, uomo santissimo, non solo illustrò collo splendore della sua santità e dottrina l'Egitto, ma fu di luce a tutta la Chiesa di Dio. Poi predicendo ad essi che gli succederebbero nell'episcopato, proibì di riammettere mai più nella loro comunione Ario, ch'egli sapeva morto davanti a Dio. Gli avvenimenti non tardarono a mostrare che questa rivelazione era veramente da Dio. Infine decapitato nel dodicesimo anno del suo episcopato. Il 26 Novembre, se ne volò a ricevere la corona del martirio.
